Le pivotement polaire médian dans l'espace aquatique de Gomphonema acuminatum Ehrenberg est un des nombreux mouvements possibles réalisés par cette diatomée biraphidée. Ce mouvement jamais décrit jusqu'à ce jour justifie ici une étude complète. Les rotations de 90° à 300°, parfois en moins de 2 secondes, avec glissement simultané ou non, le long du raphé, pose de délicats problèmes de biomécanique pour la compréhension de la motricité des diatomées. L'enregistrement vidéo du pivotement polaire permet une analyse précise, image par image, au 1/24ème de seconde et révèle des particularités surprenantes de ce mouvement. Par ailleurs, la cinématique graphique et les équations simplifiées de la mécanique classique permettent, d'une part, de tester les hypothèses de Drum & Hopkins (1966) et d'Edgar & Pikett-Heaps (1983) sur le mouvement des diatomées et, d'autre part, de quantifier les efforts développés au cours de ces mouvements grâce à la connaissance de la densité des diatomées. Les deux théories sont discutées en fonction des problèmes posés par la morphologie de la diatomée, les caractéristiques du mouvement et les dimensions géométriques du support constitué par le substrat naturel dans lequel évolue la diatomée. Pour ce mouvement, l'hypothèse d'Edgar & Pickett-Heaps (1983) semble la mieux adaptée, quoique avec réserve, aux observations et aux exigences de la biomécanique.

A strain of Cyclotella meneghiniana was isolated from the River Danube. The optimum irradiance and temperature for growthwere determined in batch cultures. The optimum temperature for growth was 25 °C. The estimated saturated irradiance wasnear 125 µE m-2 s-1. The calculated Ik for growth and photosynthesis were 30 ± 3 and 44 ± 6 µE m-2 s-1 respectively. A continuousculture technique was used to test the growth and cell composition at the transition state between batch, nutrient sufficiency, anda low rate of nutrient supply. Algal response was characterized by high intracellular N and C with negative growth rate. At a lowdilution rate (0.06 d-1), the continuous culture theory was not followed. This critical rate is characterized by low chlorophyll-acontent per cell and may depend on the mode of nutrition.

Dans une optique de valorisation de l'algue verte Chlorella sorokiniana, la composition biochimique de cette espèce a été déterminée en fonction de la température d'incubation, de l'intensité lumineuse et du stade de croissance. A 35°C, sous un éclairement de 140 µE.m-2.s-1, et en phase exponentielle de croissance, les analyses effectuées ont révélé que la biomasse algale était composée d'environ 40 % de protéines, 30 % de glucides et 18 % de lipides (% de la matière sèche des cellules). Les résultats obtenus ont montré également que les teneurs de ces constituants dépendaient étroitement des conditions de culture. Ainsi, il est possible d'orienter le métabolisme cellulaire de cette espèce vers la production du ou des métabolites souhaités, en choisissant les conditions environnementales appropriées et le moment de la récolte de la biomasse algale.

Des investigations malacologiques ont été réalisées en 1994-1995 le long de deux secteurs de rivière pour dénombrer les gîtes du mollusque Lymnaea truncatula et déterminer leurs caractéristiques. Les deux secteurs étudiés concernent a) la Creuse sur 10 km, à côté d'Argenton-sur-Creuse (Indre) et b) la Vienne sur 25 km, entre Saint-Victurnien (Haute-Vienne) et Etagnac (Charente). Le mollusque est présent dans 27 stations sur la Creuse mais on note de grandes variations dans l'abondance de la limnée : 6 gîtes avec moins de 10 L. truncatula en juillet, 9 avec 11 à 20 limnées, 6 avec 21 à 50 mollusques, et 6 avec plus de 51 individus. La longueur des gîtes ne dépasse pas 5 m dans 15 cas, 10 m dans 6 cas, 15 m dans 4 cas et 35 m dans les 2 autres stations. Neuf gîtes à L. truncatula ont été retrouvés sur les 25 km de la Vienne. Un habitat est fort de 101 limnées tandis que les autres ont de faibles effectifs avec moins de 50 limnées par gîte. Le gîte s'étend sur 5 mètres de rive dans huit cas et sur 30 m dans l'autre cas. De cette étude, il ressort que ces berges de rivière ne constituent pas un milieu favorable pour le développement de l'espèce.

The growth and cell composition of C. meneghiniana in P-, N- or Si-limited continuous cultures under different dilutions are discussed. Carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus content per cell or per unit cell volume increased with growth rate in all chemostats. Maximum growth rate depends on the type of limiting nutrient. The maximum growth rates are. 1.65 ± 0.04, 0.73 ± 0.07 and 0.95 ± 0.08 d-1 for P-, N- and Si-limited cultures respectively. These values are close to those calculated by Droop, Caperon, Goldman and Monod models. The concentrations of N and P in the river Danube are much higher than the requirements for growth and uptake of C. meneghiniana. This indicates that neither P nor N are limiting to the growth of C. meneghiniana in natural habitat.

The rotifer fauna present in Thale-Noi Lake, Pattalang Province, Thailand on the 16th September 1995 is reported. A total of 106 species, the majority of which belong to the genera Lecane (31 %), Lepadella (13 %) and Brachionus (9 %) are recorded. Cephalodella songkhlaensis n.sp. and Trichocerca siamensis n.sp. are described, Lecane calcaria Harring & Myers is redescribed. An additional fourteen rotifer species are recorded for the first time from Thailand. The genera Metadiaschiza Fadeew and Paracephalodella Berzins are synonymized with Cephalodella Bory de St. Vincent.

Les recherches écologiques concernant la nouvelle espèce marocaine de Phreodrilidae en provenance du sous-écoulement dedivers oueds et de puits du Haut Atlas de la région de Marrakech nous ont permis de confirmer son statut d'espèce stygobie, sapréférence pour les biotopes hyporhéiques et les sédiments sableux ainsi que le rôle déterminant de la texture des sédiments surson mode de répartition.Une étude conjointe du bol alimentaire des représentants du genre Astacopsidrilus et du genre Trichodrilus qui cohabitent autitre de formes dominantes de la faune totale d'Oligochètes dans le sous-écoulement de l'Oued Makhfaman, affluent de l'OuedN'Fis (Haut Atlas, région de Marrakech) a été réalisée sur la base notamment du calcul du nombre et de la taille des particulessableuses ingérées. Cette analyse a révélé la plus grande capacité d'absorption de l'appareil digestif de la nouvelle espèce dePhreodrilidae, comparativement aux représentants du genre Trichodrilus, considérés comme des limivores sensu stricto et permisd'aborder le comportement alimentaire de ces taxons en termes de compétitivité.

Les organismes utilisés dans les tests de toxicité des sédiments doivent être sensibles aux substances toxiques et capables de s'adapter à différents types de sédiments. La toxicité aiguë des sédiments a été étudiée chez l'amphipode d'eau douce, Gammarus gauthieri. Des sédiments de référence et de composition très variable ont été testés pour déterminer les effets liés aux caractéristiques naturelles des sédiments sur G. gauthieri. Une bonne survie des gammares a été obtenue après 10 jours d'exposition à ces sédiments, la variation entre les différents types de sédiments n'est pas significative au seuil de 5 %. D'autre part, cette espèce a montré une forte sensibilité vis-à-vis des sédiments contaminés prélevés dans l'Oued Boufekrane (Maroc) ; les CL50 10j ont varié entre 11 % et 80 %. Ainsi, G. gauthieri paraît une espèce utile pour les tests de toxicité des sédiments des eaux douces.

A well-characterized new species of Cyathura (Stygocyathura) is described from the underflow of a wadi in Oman where a large population is present. Sixteen species have been attributed to this entirely stygobiont subgenus; they are either from the Caribbean - Gulf of Mexico region, or from the western Pacific, whereas a single species has been recorded from the realm of the Indian Ocean: C. (S.) milloti Chappuis, Delamare & Paulian from Réunion Island. The new species could be remotely related to C. (S.) milloti.

The epithelia of the main organs likely to be involved in contaminant uptake, viz. mantle and gill were studied in the Asiaticclam Corbicula fluminea as a base for future ecotoxicological studies. On its margin, the mantle epithelium displays three foldsseparated by two grooves. The outer epithelium made of cubic cells, and the periostracal groove are involved in the formation iscomposed of the shell, secreting crystals and the periostracal lamella respectively. In the median area, the inner epithelium iscomposed of three cell types: ordinary epithelial cells, ciliated cells and mucocytes. The gill epithelium displays two structurallyand functionally different areas: a respiratory area in the interlamellar chamber and, on the opposite side, a ciliated epithelium.The respiratory epithelium is composed of thin pavement epithelial cells. The ciliated epithelium is made of different cell types:lateral ciliated epithelial cells, secretory cells, latero-frontal ciliated cells and ciliated frontal cells. The role of the secretory cellsis particularly discussed in relation to their structural similarity with lower vertebrate chloride cells (ionocytes) involved in iono- andosmoregulation processes.

L'influence des variations de la quantité de nourriture (de 5.103 à 1.107 cell.mL-1 de chlorelles) sur la dynamique de populations est étudiée à deux températures (16 et 24°C) chez trois espèces, Brachionus angularis, B. calyciflorus (représentée par deux clones) et B. plicatilis. En observant isolément une quinzaine de femelles, on évalue le taux net de reproduction, R0, le taux intrinsèque de croissance, rm, la quantité minimale de nourriture pour une croissance nulle, S0, et la concentration algale, Ks, nécessaire pour atteindre un taux de croissance maximale (ou la moitié). Les valeurs obtenues pour ces variables sont comparées entre elles et à celles de la littérature. La souche de B. plicatilis se singularise par des valeurs particulièrement basses. Les auteurs relient cette particularité au métabolisme propre à cette espèce adaptée à de fortes variations de salinité et de nourriture.

The microdistribution and abundance of freshwater gastropods were studied in lower reaches of three streams on Moorea, French Polynesia, during austral spring (AS) and austral fall (AF) 1994-1996. Seven species were examined: Neritina canalis Lamarck, Neritina turrita Gmelin, Clithon spinosa Budgin, Septaria porcellana Linnaeus, Neritina auriculata Lamarck, Melanoides tuberculata Müller, and Thiara granifera Lamarck ; the first five species are in the Neritidae, the latter two in the Thiaridae. Most gastropod species had higher densities during AF 1996 than AS 1995 (p = 0.0001) with higher densities being found in riffle than in pool habitats (p = 0.0001). No relationship between substrate type and either species presence-abundance or shell size was observed. A stepwise multiple regression indicated that velocity, depth, and substrate roughness were determinants of gastropod abundance for some species within these streams. A distinct microhabitat preference for the bottoms of rocks was observed for C. spinosa and N. canalis. The limited range of N. auriculata's occurrence within streams results from its salinity tolerance and response to hydraulic stress.

The African genus Acanthiops Waltz and McCafferty (Ephemeroptera : Baetidae) is reviewed, redescribed, and figured. The genus is a monophyletic group, easily identified in the larval stage by its distinctive labium, dorsal abdominal armature, claw armature, and two-tailed condition. A previous synonymy of Afroptilum (subgenus Afroptiloides) Gillies with Acanthiops is corroborated. Nominal species included in Acanthiops are A. marlieri (Demoulin) from Zaire, A. tsitsa n. sp. from South Africa, A. variegatus (Gillies) n. comb, from Tanzania, and A. varius (Crass) from South Africa. There are other undescribed species more widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. Species vary considerably and express relative apotypy in development of dorsal armature. Acanthiops tsitsa is described from larvae taken in the North East Cape; it is related to A. varius, but differs in dorsal armature and mouthpart characterization.

Many Oligochaeta were collected during recent investigations in Southern-European caves. This is the first contribution in which some data concerning the Tubificidae are summarized. Three new species of Rhyacodrilinae, including a new genus, are described: Rhyacodrilus omodeoi n. sp., Rhyacodrilus dolcei n. sp., Rhyacodrilus gasparoi n. sp. and Stochidrilus glandulosus n. gen., n. sp. The poorly known species Frearidrilus pescei (Dumnicka 1981, augm. 1987) is redescribed on the basis of new material collected in Slovenian caves; this revision allowed the proposal to ascribe it to the genus Tubifex, considering the monospecific genus Frearidrilus as a junior synonym of Tubifex.

Two new copepod species are described from Lake Ohrid (Balkan peninsula). Diacyclops ichnusoides n.sp. (Cyclopoida, Cyclopidae) collected from interstitial waters on the lake coast, and it belongs to the “languidoides”-group. Bryocamptus (R.) mirus n.sp. (Harpacticoida, Canthocamptidae) lives in deep water and belongs to the “zschokkei”-group. With this investigation, the copepod list in Lake Ohrid increases to 36 species, of which 6 are endemic.

The life cycle of a brackish-water population of Palaemonetes argentinus, a normally freshwater shrimp from the warm temperateregion of eastern South America, was studied in Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina. In 1995, recruitment took placein January, followed by two growth periods, the first at the beginning of summer and the second from the end of winter throughmost of spring. Females reached a larger size than males. Ovigerous females, probably belonging to two cohorts, were foundfrom October 1995 to February 1996, with a maximum number in November (93 %). Their average size and fecundity varied duringthe breeding period. The sex ratio did not significantly differ from 1:1 except in November. Evidence of mature oocytes inthe ovaries was found in ovigerous and postovigerous shrimps, suggesting that they breed twice a year. However, only some femalesof the first cohort produced a second hatch in 1995. The maximum number of undifferentiated embryos carried by a femalewas 250; there was a positive relationship between fecundity and size. Larvae were collected together with adults from Novemberto March. The life history is similar to that described in several freshwater populations. Differences are restricted to chronologicalaspects such as a shorter unimodal breeding period and are probably related to climatic factors, since Mar Chiquita is nearthe southern limit of the geographic range of the species. Data presented here suggest interannual variations in reproductive patternsthat lead, sometimes, to a longer bimodal breeding period.

Metacrangonyx ilvanus n.sp. is described from Elba Island; this is the first record of the family Metacrangonyctidae from Italy. The new species belongs to the M. panousei - group, and more exactly to the M. gineti - subgroup, previously known only from Morocco. This fact supports the idea of a multiple colonization process of continental groundwaters from the sea. It is hypothesized that the ancestor of M. ilvanus n. sp. colonized brackish waters along the coasts of the Tethys sea and survived the oligomiocenic fragmentation of Thyrrhenis. A persistence of the species on a fragment of Thyrrhenis in the Tuscan archipelago or a more recent colonization of the older part of Elba Island from the Sardo-Corsican plate during the Messinian salinity crisis is suggested. More distributional data are needed to delineate the evolutionary scenario of the genus in the Mediterranean area.

Edmulmeatus grandis, n. gen. and sp. (Ephemeroptera : Baetidae) is described from larvae collected from eastern Madagascar.The genus is distinguished primarily by having a relatively very large head capsule, large and robust mandibles with specializedarmature, and gills on abdominal segments 2-7 only. The relatively massive mandibles suggest that larvae have unusual feedinghabits compared to other baetids, being probably a macrovore-herbivore adapted for cutting and crushing plant food items. Edmulmeatusis possibly related to other Afrotropical genera having two rows of denticles on the tarsal claws.

Les peuplements chironomidiens des cours supérieur et moyen de l'Aude, rivière méditerranéenne des Pyrénées orientales ont été étudiés à l'aide de récoltes de dérives d'exuvies nymphales. 7 collections à 12 stations (1700 m à 80 m) ont été effectuées sur une période d'une année (février à décembre 1989). 21189 exuvies ont été triées et 125 espèces ou taxa identifiés. Parmi elles, 14 sont nouvelles pour la France et 13 pour les Pyrénées (Zone 2 ≥ 1000 m Limnofauna Europaea). Deux classifications ascendantes hiérarchiques ont permis de définir 4 niveaux typologiques et 5 groupes d'espèces parmi les 52 espèces les plus fréquentes (≥ 1%). 8 espèces sont euryzonales, 13 sont caractéristiques de la plaine, 9 sont euryzonales de montagne, 3 sont caractéristiques du piémont et 19 sont réparties en haute et moyenne montagne. Le peu d'espèces caractéristiques (12/52) et la large répartition altitudinale de la majorité d'entre elles suggèrent un modèle de répartition plutôt clinal que zonal. La zonation typologique de la rivière Aude parait être corrélée avec le climat, la géologie et les étages de végétation du bassin versant. Le caractère méditerranéen de l'Aude, avec ses températures estivales plus élevées, facilite la remontée altitudinale des espèces qui vivent normalement dans des zones inférieures dans les rivières des Pyrénées centrales et atlantiques.

Specimens of Mysis relicta from Pojoviken Bay (Finland) were divided into two groups, one kept at 4°C, the other at 14°C, in total darkness. Immediately following a 1 h exposure to noon sunlight both 4°C and 14°C animals displayed strongly reduced visual sensitivities. In both groups pre-exposure levels were regained in about two days, but apparently along slightly different routes. Slopes of V/log I curves hardly changed throughout the time of observation in the 14°C material, suggesting an adaptation to brighter light levels without undue stress responses. In the 4°C animals, however, there appears to have been not only a longer initial delay before recovery commenced, but slopes of V/log I curves indicated that these animals had reacted with depression to the bright light and needed time to regain their pre-exposure value. The results suggest that recovery is a two-stage process in which biochemical reactions and structural phenomena interact. The results, when compared with similar observations on Lake Pääjärvi specimens, underline the view that different localities may have populations of Mysis relicta which differ from each other in photophysiological characteristics.
