This paper deals with two-species convolution diffusion-competition models of Lotka–Volterra type with delays which describe more accurate information than the Laplacian diffusion-competition models. We first investigate the existence of travelling wave solutions of a class of nonlocal convolution diffusion systems with weak quasimonotonicity or weak exponential quasimonotonicity by a cross-iteration technique and Schauder’s fixed point theorem. When the results are applied to the convolution diffusion-competition models with delays, we establish the existence of travelling wave solutions as well as asymptotic behaviour.

In 1990 Gowda and Teboulle published the paper [16], making a comparison of several conditions ensuring the Fenchel-Rockafellar duality formula

Probably the first comparison of different constraint qualification conditions was made by Hiriart-Urruty [17] in connection with ε-subdifferential calculus. Among them appears, as the basic sufficient condition, the formula for the conjugate of the corresponding function; such functions are: f1 + f2, g o A, max{fl,…, fn}, etc. In fact strong duality formulae (like the one above) and good formulae for conjugates are equivalent and they can be used to obtain formulae for ε-subdifferentials, using a technique developed in [17] and extensively used in [46].

We answer a few questions raised by S. Fitzpatrick concerning the representation of maximal monotone operators by convex functions. We also examine some other questions concerning this representation and other ones which have recently emerged.

In industrial applications of microwave heating, it has been observed that rather than the heating taking place uniformly, regions of high temperature, called hot-spots, tend to form. Depending on the industrial application, these can be either desirable or undesirable, and hence a theoretical understanding of the properties of the material that lead to hotspot formation is necessary. It has been shown in previous studies that hotspot formation is a product of the nonlinear dependence of microwave energy absorption by the material on temperature. It is shown in the present work that the conductivity of the material can have a significant effect on hotspot formation and can, if large enough, stop a hotspot from forming.

Duffing's equation, in its simplest form, can be approximated by various non-linear difference equations. It is shown that a particular choice can be solved in closed form giving periodic solutions.

In this paper, we present generalizations of the Jacobian matrix and the Hessian matrix to continuous maps and continuously differentiable functions respectively. We then establish second-order optimality conditions for mathematical programming problems with continuously differentiable functions. The results also sharpen the corresponding results for problems involving C1.1-functions.

A large number of mathematical models are expressed as differential equations. Such models are often derived through a slowly-varying approximation under the assumption that the domain of interest is arbitrarily large; however, typical solutions and the physical problem of interest possess finite domains. The issue is: what are the correct boundary conditions to be used at the edge of the domain for such model equations? Centre manifold theory [24] and its generalisations may be used to derive these sorts of approximations, and higher-order refinements, in an appealing and systematic fashion. Furthermore, the centre manifold approach permits the derivation of appropriate initial conditions and forcing for the models [25, 7]. Here I show how to derive asymptotically-correct boundary conditions for models which are based on the slowly-varying approximation. The dominant terms in the boundary conditions typically agree with those obtained through physical arguments. However, refined models of higher order require subtle corrections to the previously-deduced boundary conditions, and also require the provision of additional boundary conditions to form a complete model.

The problem of withdrawing water through a line sink from a region containing an homogeneous fluid beneath a free surface is considered. Assuming steady, irrotational flow of an ideal fluid, solutions with low Froude number containing a stagnation point on the free surface above the sink are sought using a series substitution method. The solutions are shown to exist for a value of the Froude number up to a critical value of about 1.4. No solutions of this type are found for Froude numbers greater than this value.

A method is considered for locating oscillating, nonrotating solutions for the parametrically-excited pendulum by inferring that a particular horseshoe exists in the stable and unstable manifolds of the local saddles. In particular, odd-periodic solutions are determined which are difficult to locate by alternative numerical techniques. A pseudo-Anosov braid is also located which implies the existence of a countable infinity of periodic orbits without the horseshoe assumption being necessary.

The Schatten-von Neumann property of a pseudo-differential operator is established by showing that the pseudo-differential operator is a multiplier defined by means of an admissible wavelet associated to a unitary representation of the additive group Rn on the C*-algebra of all bounded linear operators from L2(Rn) into L2(Rn). A bounded linear operator on L2(R) arising in the Landau, Pollak and Slepian model in signal analysis is shown to be a wavelet multiplier studied in this paper.

A continuous one-parameter set of binary operators on L2(R) called fractional convolution operators and which includes those of multiplication and convolution as particular cases is constructed by means of the Condon-Bargmann fractional Fourier transform. A fractional convolution theorem generalizes the standard Fourier convolution theorems and a fractional unit distribution generalizes the unit and delta distributions. Some explicit double-integral formulas for the fractional convolution between two functions are given and the induced operation between their corresponding Wigner distributions is found.

We consider the epidemic model with subpopulations introduced in Hethcote [5]. It is shown that if the endemic equilibrium exists, then the system is uniformly persistent. Moreover, the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable under the assumption of small effective contact rates between different subpopulations.

In this paper, we give general recommendations for successful application of the Douglas–Rachford reflection method to convex and nonconvex real matrix completion problems. These guidelines are demonstrated by various illustrative examples.

Strong system equivalence is defined for polynomial realizations of a rational matrix. It is shown that any polynomial realization is strongly system equivalent to a generalized state-space realization, and two generalized state-space realizations are strongly system equivalent if and only if they are constant system equivalent.

For finite dimensional linear systems it is known that in certain circumstances the input can be retrieved from a knowledge of the output only. The main aim of this paper is to produce explicit formulae for input retrieval in systems which do not possess direct linkage from input to output. Although two different procedures are suggested the fundamental idea in both cases is to find an expression for the inverse transfer function of the system. In the first case this is achieved using a general method of power series inversion and in the second case by a sequence of elementary operations on a Rosenbrock type system matrix.

We present analytical methods to investigate the Cauchy problem for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation u1 = (v + iα)Δu − (κ + iβ) |u|2qu + γu in 2 spatial dimensions (here all parameters are real). We first obtain the local existence for v > 0, κ ≥ 0. Global existence is established in the critical case q = 1. In addition, we prove the global existence when .

The concept of nonautonomous (or cocycle) attractors has become a proper tool for the study of the asymptotic behaviour of general nonautonomous partial differential equations. This is a time-dependent family of compact sets, invariant for the associated process and attracting “from –∞”. In general, the concept is rather different to the classical global attractor for autonomous dynamical systems. We prove a general result on the finite fractal dimensionality of each compact set of this family. In this way, we generalise some previous results of Chepyzhov and Vishik. Our results are also applied to differential equations with a nonlinear term having polynomial growth at most.

The convergence properties of a very general class of adaptive recursive algorithms for the identification of discrete-time linear signal models are studied for the stochastic case using martingale convergence theorems. The class of algorithms specializes to a number of known output error algorithms (also called model reference adaptive schemes) and equation error schemes including extended (and standard) least squares schemes. They also specialize to novel adaptive Kalman filters, adaptive predictors and adaptive regulator algorithms. An algorithm is derived for identification of uniquely parameterized multivariable linear systems.

A passivity condition (positive real condition in the time invariant model case) emerges as the crucial condition ensuring convergence in the noise-free cases. The passivity condition and persistently exciting conditions on the noise and state estimates are then shown to guarantee almost sure convergence results for the more general adaptive schemes.

Of significance is that, apart from the stability assumptions inherent in the passivity condition, there are no stability assumptions required as in an alternative theory using convergence of ordinary differential equations.

The problem of oblique wave scattering by a rectangular submarine trench is investigated assuming a linearized theory of water waves. Due to the geometrical symmetry of the rectangular trench about the central line $x=0$, the boundary value problem is split into two separate problems involving the symmetric and antisymmetric potential functions. A multi-term Galerkin approximation involving ultra-spherical Gegenbauer polynomials is employed to solve the first-kind integral equations arising in the mathematical analysis of the problem. The reflection and transmission coefficients are computed numerically for various values of different parameters and different angles of incidence of the wave train. The coefficients are depicted graphically against the wave number for different situations. Some curves for these coefficients available in the literature and obtained by different methods are recovered.

We are concerned with the solution of the second kind Fredholm equation (and eigenvalue problem) by a projection method, where the projection is either an orthogonal projection on a set of piecewise polynomials or an interpolatory projection at the Gauss points of subintervals.

We study these cases of superconvergence of the Sloan iterated solution: global superconvergence for a smooth kernel, and superconvergence at the partition points for a kernel of “Green's function” type. The mathematical analysis applies for the solution of the inhomogeneous equation as well as for an eigenvector.
