We provide an introduction to enumerating and constructing invariants of group representations via character methods. The problem is contextualized via two case studies, arising from our recent work: entanglement invariants for characterizing the structure of state spaces for composite quantum systems; and Markov invariants, a robust alternative to parameter-estimation intensive methods of statistical inference in molecular phylogenetics.

The Kelvin–Helmholtz flow is a shearing instability that occurs at the interface between two fluids moving with different speeds. Here, the two fluids are each of finite depth, but are highly viscous. Consequently, their motion is caused by the horizontal speeds of the two walls above and below each fluid layer. The motion of the fluids is assumed to be governed by the Stokes approximation for slow viscous flow, and the fluid motion is thus responsible for movement of the interface between them. A linearized solution is presented, from which the decay rate and the group speed of the wave system may be obtained. The nonlinear equations are solved using a novel spectral representation for the streamfunctions in each of the two fluid layers, and the exact boundary conditions are applied at the unknown interface location. Results are presented for the wave profiles, and the behaviour of the curvature of the interface is discussed. These results are compared to the Boussinesq–Stokes approximation which is also solved by a novel spectral technique, and agreement between the results supports the numerical calculations.

We develop a simplified analytical approach for pricing discretely-sampled variance swaps with the realized variance, defined in terms of the squared log return of the underlying price. The closed-form formula obtained for Heston’s two-factor stochastic volatility model is in a much simpler form than those proposed in literature. Most interestingly, we discuss the validity of our solution as well as some other previous solutions in different forms in the parameter space. We demonstrate that market practitioners need to be cautious, making sure that their model parameters extracted from market data are in the right parameter subspace, when any of these analytical pricing formulae is adopted to calculate the fair delivery price of a discretely-sampled variance swap.

We study the stability of inviscid, incompressible swirling flows of variable density with respect to azimuthal, normal mode disturbances. We prove that the wave velocity of neutral modes is bounded. A further refinement of Fung’s semi-elliptical instability region is given. This new instability region depends not only on the minimum Richardson number, and the lower and upper bounds for the angular velocity like Fung’s semi-ellipse, but also on the azimuthal wave number and the radii of the inner and outer cylinders. An estimation for the growth rate of unstable disturbances is obtained and it is compared to some of the recent asymptotic results.

We consider a two-step Sal’nikov reaction scheme occurring within a compressible viscous gas. The first step of the reaction may be either endothermic or exothermic, while the second step is strictly exothermic. Energy may also be lost from the system due to Newtonian cooling. An asymptotic solution for temperature perturbations of small amplitude is presented using the methods of strained coordinates and multiple scales, and a travelling wave solution with a sech-squared profile is derived. The method of lines is then used to approximate the full system with a set of ordinary differential equations, which are integrated numerically to track accurately the evolution of the reaction front. This numerical method is used to verify the asymptotic solution and investigate behaviours under different conditions. Using this method, temperature waves progressing as pulsatile fronts are detected at appropriate parameter values.

Financial contracts with options that allow the holder to extend the contract maturity by paying an additional fixed amount have found many applications in finance. Closed-form solutions for the price of these options have appeared in the literature for the case when the contract for the underlying asset follows a geometric Brownian motion with constant interest rate, volatility and nonnegative dividend yield. In this paper, option price is derived for the case of the underlying asset that follows a geometric Brownian motion with time-dependent drift and volatility, which is more important for real life applications. The option price formulae are derived for the case of a drift that includes nonnegative or negative dividend. The latter yields a solution type that is new to the literature. A negative dividend corresponds to a negative foreign interest rate for foreign exchange options, or storage costs for commodity options. It may also appear in pricing options with transaction costs or real options, where the drift is larger than the interest rate.

Fluid turbulence is often modelled using equations derived from the Navier–Stokes equations, perhaps with some semi-heuristic closure model for the turbulent viscosity. This paper considers a possible alternative hypothesis. It is argued that regarding turbulence as a manifestation of non-Newtonian behaviour may be a viewpoint of at least comparable validity. For a general description of nonlinear viscosity in a Stokes fluid, it is shown that the flow patterns are indistinguishable from those predicted by the Navier–Stokes equation in one- or two-dimensional geometry, but that fully three-dimensional flows differ markedly. The stability of linearized plane Poiseuille flow to three-dimensional disturbances is then considered, in a Tollmien–Schlichting formulation. It is demonstrated that the flow may become unstable at significantly lower Reynolds numbers than those expected from Navier–Stokes theory. Although similar results are known in sections of the rheological literature, the present work attempts to advance the philosophical viewpoint that turbulence might always be regarded as a non-Newtonian effect, to a degree that is dependent only on the particular fluid in question. Such an approach could give a more satisfactory account of the underlying physics.

Denoising of images corrupted by multiplicative noise is an important task in various applications, such as laser imaging, synthetic aperture radar and ultrasound imaging. We propose a combined first-order and second-order variational model for removal of multiplicative noise. Our model substantially reduces the staircase effects while preserving edges in the restored images, since it combines advantages of the first-order and second-order total variation. The issues of existence and uniqueness of a minimizer for this variational model are analysed. Moreover, a gradient descent method is employed to solve the associated Euler–Lagrange equation, and several numerical experiments are given to show the efficiency of our model. In particular, a comparison with an existing model in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index is provided.

We present an efficient computational procedure for the solution of bang–bang optimal control problems. The method is based on a well-known adaptive control parametrization method, which is one of the direct methods for numerical solution of optimal control problems. First, the adaptive control parametrization method is reviewed and then its advantages and disadvantages are illustrated. In order to resolve the need for a priori knowledge about the structure of optimal control and for resolving the sensitivity to an initial guess, a homotopy continuation technique is combined with the adaptive control parametrization method. The present combined method does not require any assumptions on the control structure and the number of switching points. In addition, the switching points are captured accurately; also, efficiency of the method is reported through illustrative examples.

Many boundary value problems occur in a natural way while studying fluid flow problems in a channel. The solutions of two such boundary value problems are obtained and analysed in the context of flow problems involving three layers of fluids of different constant densities in a channel, associated with an impermeable bottom that has a small undulation. The top surface of the channel is either bounded by a rigid lid or free to the atmosphere. The fluid in each layer is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible, and the flow is irrotational and two-dimensional. Only waves that are stationary with respect to the bottom profile are considered in this paper. The effect of surface tension is neglected. In the process of obtaining solutions for both the problems, regular perturbation analysis along with a Fourier transform technique is employed to derive the first-order corrections of some important physical quantities. Two types of bottom topography, such as concave and convex, are considered to derive the profiles of the interfaces. We observe that the profiles are oscillatory in nature, representing waves of variable amplitude with distinct wave numbers propagating downstream and with no wave upstream. The observations are presented in tabular and graphical forms.

Because of its central role in the global carbon cycle, quantifying the biomass of photosynthetic microalgae in the oceans is crucial to our ability to estimate the oceans’ carbon drawdown. Many traditional methods of primary production assessment have proven to be extremely time consuming and, consequently, have handled only very small sample sizes. The recent advent of in situ bio-optical sensors, such as the water quality monitor (WQM), is now providing lower cost and higher throughput data on these crucial biological communities. These WQMs, however, only quantify the total fluorescence of all individual cells within their optical sample windows, irrespective of size. In this paper, we further develop an established model, based on Pareto random variables, of the size structure of the microalgae community to understand the effect of the WQMs’ sampling and data pooling on their estimates of algal biomass. Unfortunately, evaluating sums of Pareto variables is a notoriously difficult problem. Here, we utilize an approximation for the right-tail of the resulting distribution to derive parameter estimates for the underlying size structure of the microalgae community.

We consider feedback predictive control of a discrete nonhomogeneous Markov jump system with nonsymmetric constraints. The probability transition of the Markov chain is modelled as a time-varying polytope. An ellipsoid set is utilized to construct an invariant set in the predictive controller design. However, when the constraints are nonsymmetric, this method leads to results which are over conserved due to the geometric characteristics of the ellipsoid set. Thus, a polyhedral invariant set is applied to enlarge the initial feasible area. The results obtained are for a more general class of dynamical systems, and the feasibility region is significantly enlarged. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the advantage of the proposed method.

The steady, axisymmetric flow induced by a point sink (or source) submerged in an unbounded inviscid fluid is computed. The resulting deformation of the free surface is obtained, and a limit of steady solutions is found that is quite different to those obtained in past work. More accurate solutions indicate that the old limiting flow rate was too high and, in fact, the breakdown of steady solutions at a lower flow rate is characterized by the appearance of spurious wavelets at the free surface.

We investigate two mean–variance optimization problems for a single cohort of workers in an accumulation phase of a defined benefit pension scheme. Since the mortality intensity evolves as a general Markov diffusion process, the liability is random. The fund manager aims to cover this uncertain liability via controlling the asset allocation strategy and the contribution rate. In order to have a more realistic model, we study the case when the risk aversion depends dynamically on current wealth. By solving an extended Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman system, we obtain analytical solutions for the equilibrium strategies and value function which depend on both current wealth and mortality intensity. Moreover, results for the constant risk aversion are presented as special cases of our models.

The problem of reflection and refraction of elastic waves due to an incident quasi-primary $(qP)$ wave at a plane interface between two dissimilar nematic elastomer half-spaces has been investigated. The expressions for the phase velocities corresponding to primary and secondary waves are given. It is observed that these phase velocities depend on the angle of propagation of the elastic waves. The reflection and refraction coefficients corresponding to the reflected and refracted waves, respectively, are derived by using appropriate boundary conditions. The energy transmission of the reflected and refracted waves is obtained, and the energy ratios and the reflection and refraction coefficients are computed numerically.

We compare six fixed-stepsize fourth-order numerical methods for a number of test problems described by a system of coupled Korteweg–de Vries equations. Particular attention is paid to the ability of these methods to preserve fixed points (solitary waves) and the invariants of the system, and establishing to what extent the conservation of integral invariants is indicative of the solution error for these methods.

In this paper a feasible direction method is presented to find all efficient extreme points for a special class of multiple objective linear fractional programming problems, when all denominators are equal. This method is based on the conjugate gradient projection method, so that we start with a feasible point and then a sequence of feasible directions towards all efficient adjacent extremes of the problem can be generated. Since methods based on vertex information may encounter difficulties as the problem size increases, we expect that this method will be less sensitive to problem size. A simple production example is given to illustrate this method.

We consider a distributed optimization problem over a multi-agent network, in which the sum of several local convex objective functions is minimized subject to global convex inequality constraints. We first transform the constrained optimization problem to an unconstrained one, using the exact penalty function method. Our transformed problem has a smaller number of variables and a simpler structure than the existing distributed primal–dual subgradient methods for constrained distributed optimization problems. Using the special structure of this problem, we then propose a distributed proximal-gradient algorithm over a time-changing connectivity network, and establish a convergence rate depending on the number of iterations, the network topology and the number of agents. Although the transformed problem is nonsmooth by nature, our method can still achieve a convergence rate, ${\mathcal{O}}(1/k)$, after $k$ iterations, which is faster than the rate, ${\mathcal{O}}(1/\sqrt{k})$, of existing distributed subgradient-based methods. Simulation experiments on a distributed state estimation problem illustrate the excellent performance of our proposed method.

This paper analyses the steady-state operation of a generalized bioreactor model that encompasses a continuous-flow bioreactor and an idealized continuous-flow membrane bioreactor as limiting cases. A biodegradation of organic materials is modelled using Contois growth kinetics. The bioreactor performance is analysed by finding the steady-state solutions of the model and determining their stability as a function of the dimensionless residence time. We show that an effective recycle parameter improves the performance of the bioreactor at moderate values of the dimensionless residence time. However, at sufficiently large values of the dimensionless residence time, the performance of the bioreactor is independent of the recycle ratio.

The problem of oblique wave scattering by a rectangular submarine trench is investigated assuming a linearized theory of water waves. Due to the geometrical symmetry of the rectangular trench about the central line $x=0$, the boundary value problem is split into two separate problems involving the symmetric and antisymmetric potential functions. A multi-term Galerkin approximation involving ultra-spherical Gegenbauer polynomials is employed to solve the first-kind integral equations arising in the mathematical analysis of the problem. The reflection and transmission coefficients are computed numerically for various values of different parameters and different angles of incidence of the wave train. The coefficients are depicted graphically against the wave number for different situations. Some curves for these coefficients available in the literature and obtained by different methods are recovered.
