Let N be a complete Riemannian manifold isometrically immersed into a Hadamard manifold M. We show that the immersion cannot be bounded if the mean curvature of the immersed manifold is small compared with the curvature of M and the Laplacian of the distance function on N grows at most linearly. The latter condition is satisfied if the Ricci curvature of N does not approach too fast. The main tool in the proof is a modification of Yau’s maximum principle.

Much research has been done on the geometry of Teichmüller space and Hamilton sequences of extremal Beltrami differentials. This paper discusses some problems concerning infinitesimal Teichmüller geodesic discs and Hamilton sequences of extremal Beltrami differentials in the tangent space of an infinite-dimensional Teichmüller space.

Let ρ be a supernilpotent radical. Let ρ* be the class of all rings A such that either A is a simple ring in ρ or the factor ring A/I is in ρ for every nonzero ideal I of A and every minimal ideal M of A is in ρ. Let be the lower radical determined by ρ* and let ρφ denote the upper radical determined by the class of all subdirectly irreducible rings with ρ-semisimple hearts. Le Roux and Heyman proved that is a supernilpotent radical with and they asked whether if ρ is replaced by β, ℒ , 𝒩 or 𝒥 , where β, ℒ , 𝒩 and 𝒥 denote the Baer, the Levitzki, the Koethe and the Jacobson radical, respectively. In the present paper we will give a negative answer to this question by showing that if ρ is a supernilpotent radical whose semisimple class contains a nonzero nonsimple * -ring without minimal ideals, then is a nonspecial radical and consequently . We recall that a prime ring A is a * -ring if A/I is in β for every .

J. W. Anderson (1996) asked whether two finitely generated Kleinian groups with the same set of axes are commensurable. We give some partial solutions.

A nine-dimensional exponential Lie group G and a linear form ℓ on the Lie algebra of G are presented such that for all Pukanszky polarizations 𝔭 at ℓ the canonically associated unitary representation ρ=ρ(ℓ,𝔭) of G has the property that ρ(ℒ1(G)) does not contain any nonzero operator given by a compactly supported kernel function. This example shows that one of Leptin’s results is wrong, and it cannot be repaired.

Let ϕ:D→D and ψ:D→ℂ be analytic maps. These induce a weighted composition operator ψCϕ acting between weighted Bloch type spaces. Under some assumptions on the weights we give a necessary as well as a sufficient condition when such an operator is continuous.

In this paper, we give a new characterization of reflexive Banach spaces in terms of the sum of two closed bounded convex sets.

Let 𝒯X be the full transformation semigroup on a set X and E be a nontrivial equivalence on X. Write then TE(X) is a subsemigroup of 𝒯X. In this paper, we endow TE(X) with the so-called natural order and determine when two elements of TE(X) are related under this order, then find out elements of TE(X) which are compatible with ≤ on TE(X). Also, the maximal and minimal elements and the covering elements are described.

The following system is considered in this paper: The primary goal is to establish conditions on time-varying coefficients e(t), f(t), g(t) and h(t) and a forcing term p(t) for all solutions to converge to the origin (0,0) as . Here, the zero solution of the corresponding homogeneous linear system is assumed to be neither uniformly stable nor uniformly attractive. Sufficient conditions are given for asymptotic stability of the zero solution of the nonlinear perturbed system under the assumption that q(t,0,0)=0.

In a recent paper by Wang and Ding, it was stated that any ring which is generalized supplemented as a left module over itself is semiperfect. The purpose of this note is to show that Wang and Ding’s claim is not true and that the class of generalized supplemented rings lies properly between the classes of semilocal and semiperfect rings. Moreover, we propose a corrected version of the theorem by introducing a wider notion of ‘local’ for submodules.

Generating functions are used to derive formulas for the number of representations of a positive integer by each of the quadratic forms x12+x22+x32+2x42, x12+2x22+2x32+2x42, x12+x22+2x32+4x42 and x12+2x22+4x32+4x42. The formulas show that the number of representations by each form is always positive. Some of the analogous results involving sums of triangular numbers are also given.

We study sums involving multiplicative functions that take values over a nonhomogenous Beatty sequence. We then apply our result in a few special cases to obtain asymptotic formulas for quantities such as the number of integers in a Beatty sequence that are representable as a sum of two squares up to a given magnitude.

We give a characterization of pairs of weights for the validity of weighted inequalities involving certain generalized geometric mean operators generated by some Volterra integral operators, which include the Hardy averaging operator and the Riemann–Liouville integral operators. The estimations of the constants are also discussed. Our results generalize the work done by J. A. Cochran, C.-S. Lee, H. P. Heinig, B. Opic, P. Gurka, and L. Pick.

Near exact Banach frames are introduced and studied, and examples demonstrating the existence of near exact Banach frames are given. Also, a sufficient condition for a Banach frame to be near exact is obtained. Further, we consider block perturbation of retro Banach frames, and prove that a block perturbation of a retro Banach frame is also a retro Banach frame. Finally, it is proved that if E and F are both Banach spaces having Banach frames, then the product space E×F has an exact Banach frame.

This paper characterizes the K-analyticity-framedness in ℝX for Cp(X) (the space of real-valued continuous functions on X with pointwise topology) in terms of Cp(X). This is used to extend Tkachuk’s result about the K-analyticity of spaces Cp(X) and to supplement the Arkhangel ′skiĭ–Calbrix characterization of σ-compact cosmic spaces. A partial answer to an Arkhangel ′skiĭ–Calbrix problem is also provided.

A complete Sylow sequence, 𝒫=P1,…,Pm, of a finite group G is a sequence of m Sylow pi-subgroups of G, one for each pi, where p1,…,pm are all of the distinct prime divisors of |G|. A product of the form P1⋯Pm is called a complete Sylow product of G. We prove that the solvable radical of G equals the intersection of all complete Sylow products of G if, for every composition factor S of G, and for every ordering of the prime divisors of |S|, there exist a complete Sylow sequence 𝒫 of S, and g∈S such that g is uniquely factorizable in 𝒫 . This generalizes our results in Kaplan and Levy [‘The solvable radical of Sylow factorizable groups’, Arch. Math.85(6) (2005), 490–496].

Using Ahlfors’ theory of covering surfaces, we prove the existence theorem for the T direction for algebroid functions dealing with multiple values which extends the results proved by Guo, Zheng and Ng and answers a question by Wang, Giao and the present authors.

Let R be a left coherent ring, S a right coherent ring and RU a generalized tilting module, with S=End(RU) satisfying the condition that each finitely presented left R-module X with ExtRi(X,U)=0 for any i≥1 is U-torsionless. If M is a finitely presented left R-module such that ExtRi(M,U)=0 for any i≥0 with (where n is a nonnegative integer), then and ExtSi(ExtRn(M,U),U)=0 for any i≥0 with . A duality is thus induced between the category of finitely presented holonomic left R-modules and the category of finitely presented holonomic right S-modules.

The variety of topological groups generated by the class of all abelian kω-groups has been shown to equal the variety of topological groups generated by the free abelian topological group on [0, 1]. In this paper it is proved that the free abelian topological group on a compact Hausdorff space X generates the same variety if and only if X is not scattered.

We prove that any continuous mapping f:E→Y on a completely metrizable subspace E of a perfect paracompact space X can be extended to a Lebesgue class one mapping g:X→Y (that is, for every open set V in Y the preimage g−1(V ) is an Fσ-set in X) with values in an arbitrary topological space Y.
