Stage-structured models of population growth have been considered in the constant delay and state-dependent delay cases, when modeled by retarded functional differential equations. In the first case we settle a conjecture posed by Aiello and Freedman [1] by showing the existence of oscillatory solutions. In the second case, we show that under suitable criteria, all positive solutions tend to a global attractor.

We prove that generalized free products of finitely generated free-byfinite groups amalgamating a cyclic subgroup are subgroup separable. From this it follows that if where t ≥ 1 and u, v are words on {a1,...,am} and {b1,...,bn} respectively then G is subgroup separable thus generalizing a result in [9] that such groups have solvable word problems.

The purpose for this short note is to describe the space of harmonic spinors on hyperbolic n-space Hn. This is a natural continuation of the study of harmonic functions on Hn in [Minemura] and [Helgason]—these results were generalized in the form of Helgason's conjecture, proved in [KKMOOT],—and of [Gaillard 1, 2], where harmonic forms on Hn were considered. The connection between invariant differential equations on a Riemannian semisimple symmetric space G/K and homological aspects of the representation theory of G, as exemplified in (8) below, does not seem to have been previously mentioned. This note is divided into three main parts respectively dedicated to the statement of the results, some reminders, and the proofs. I thank the referee for having suggested various improvements.

A vector lattice F is said to be Dedekind α-complete, where α is a cardinal number, provided that each non-empty order bounded subset D of F satisfying card(D) ≤ α has a supremum. Several characterizations of this property are presented here.

Let p ≡ 1 mod 8 be a rational prime and let h(—p) be the class number of . In [1], Barrucand and Cohn show that h(-p) = 0 mod 8 iff p = x2 + 32y2 for some x,y € Z. In this article, we generalize their result to a family of relative quadratic extensions K/F, where Fk is the maximum totally real subfield of Q(ζ2k+2 ), and a power of a prime of Fk from a family of positive density.

The Nörlund matrix Na is the triangular matrix {an-k /An}, where an ≥ 0 and An := a0 + a1 + • • • + an > 0. It is proved that, subject to the existence of α := lim nan/An, Na ∊ B(lp) for 1 < p < ∞ if and only if α < ∞. It is also proved that it is possible to have Na ∊ B(lp) for 1 < p < ∞ when sup nan/An = ∞.

The authors consider the nonlinear neutral delay differential equation

and obtain results on the asymptotic behavior of solutions. Some of the results require that P(t) has arbitrarily large zeros or that P(t) oscillates about — 1

We describe the structure of the collineation groups of Figueroa planes, giving examples and explanations that show why the description in Dempwolff [3] is not completely accurate. We also give criteria for when Figueroa planes are isomorphic, and show that certain subplanes are Figueroa or Pappian planes.

Let be the Zemanian space of Hankel transformable generalized functions and let be the space of Hankel convolution operators for . This is the dual of a subspace of for which is also the space of Hankel convolutors. In this paper the elements of are characterized as those in and in that commute with Hankel translations. Moreover, necessary and sufficient conditions on the generalized Hankel transform are established in order that every such that in .

Let α be a positive irrational real number. (Without loss of generality assume 0 < α < 1.) The characteristic sequence of α is

We make some observations on the various descriptions of the characteristic sequence of α which have appeared in the literature. We then refine one of these descriptions in order to obtain a very simple derivation of an arithmetic expression for [nα] which appears in A. S. Fraenkel, J. Levitt, and M. Shimshoni [17]. Some concluding remarks give conditions on n which are equivalent to fn = 1.

A residue difference set modulo p is a set A = {a1,a2,...,ak} of integers 1 ≤ ai ≤ p — 1 such that for all i and j with i ≠ j, where is the Legendre symbol. We give a lower and an upper bound for mp—the P maximal cardinality of such set A in the case of p ≡ 1 (mod 4).

We give a parallel proof of Barnes' first lemma and of its finite analogue. In both cases we use the Mellin transform. In the classical case, the proof avoids the residue theorem. In the finite case the Gamma function is replaced by the Gaussian sum function and the beta function by the Jacobi sum function.

We give a simple characterization of coefficient multipliers from the mixed norm space Hp,q,α, 2 ≤ p ≤ ∞, into Hu,v,β, 0 ≤ u ≤ 2, which includes the main results of Wojtaszczyk in [5]. We also calculate multipliers from the Hardy space Hp, 2 ≤ p ≤ ∞, into Hq, 0 < q ≤ 2.

We show that L1(μ) has a weak Hadamard differential)le renorm (i.e. differentiable away from the origin uniformly on all weakly compact sets) if and only if μ is sigma finite. As a consequence several powerful recent differentiability theorems apply to subspaces of L1.

A ring R is E-associative if φ(xy) = φ(x)y for all endomorphisms φ of the additive group of R, and all x,y ∊ R. Unital E-associative rings are E-rings. The structure of the torsion ideal of an E-associative ring is described completely. The E-associative rings with completely decomposable torsion free additive groups are also classified. Conditions under which E-associative rings are E-rings, and other miscellaneous results are obtained.

The object of this paper is to show that every soluble right orderable group is locally indicable. The proof identifies an interesting connection between the theory of right orderable groups and the theory of amenable groups and bounded cohomology.

An analog of the Hopf bifurcation theorem is proved for implicit neutral functional differential equations of the form F(xt, D′(xt, α), α) = 0. The proof is based on the method of S1-degree of convex-valued mappings. Examples illustrating the theorem are provided.

Each g ∊ ℤ[x] defines a homeomorphism of a compact space We investigate the isomorphism classes of the C*-crossed product algebra Bg associated with the dynamical system An isomorphism invariant Eg of the algebra Bg is shown to determine the algebra Bg up to * or * anti-isomorphism if degree g ≤ 1 and 1 is not a root of g or if degree g = 2 and g is irreducible. It is also observed that the entropy of the dynamical system is equal to the growth rate of the periodic points if g has no roots of unity as zeros. This slightly extends the previously known equality of these two quantities under the assumption that g has no zeros on the unit circle.

Let X be a Hausdorff space which is the continuous image of an ordered continuum. We prove that every irreducible separator of X is metrizable. This is a far reaching extension of the 1967 theorem of S. Mardešić which asserts that X has a basis of open sets with metrizable boundaries. Our first result is then used to show that, in particular, if Y is an hereditarily locally connected continuum, then for subsets of Y quasi-components coincide with components, and that the boundary of each connected open subset of Y is accessible by ordered continua. These results answer open problems in the literature due to the fourth and third authors, respectively.

If f is a lower semicontinuous function mapping a connected open subset of ℝn to (—∞, ∞], and if the proximal subgradient of f reduces to zero wherever it exists, then f is constant.
