We propose a new method, probabilistic divide-and-conquer, for improving the success probability in rejection sampling. For the example of integer partitions, there is an ideal recursive scheme which improves the rejection cost from asymptotically order n3/4 to a constant. We show other examples for which a non-recursive, one-time application of probabilistic divide-and-conquer removes a substantial fraction of the rejection sampling cost.

We also present a variation of probabilistic divide-and-conquer for generating i.i.d. samples that exploits features of the coupon collector's problem, in order to obtain a cost that is sublinear in the number of samples.

We introduce a new model of competition on growing networks. This extends the preferential attachment model, with the key property that node choices evolve simultaneously with the network. When a new node joins the network, it chooses neighbours by preferential attachment, and selects its type based on the number of initial neighbours of each type. The model is analysed in detail, and in particular, we determine the possible proportions of the various types in the limit of large networks. An important qualitative feature we find is that, in contrast to many current theoretical models, often several competitors will coexist. This matches empirical observations in many real-world networks.

Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of r-uniform hypergraphs. The chromatic threshold of $\mathcal{F}$ is the infimum of all non-negative reals c such that the subfamily of $\mathcal{F}$ comprising hypergraphs H with minimum degree at least $c \binom{| V(H) |}{r-1}$ has bounded chromatic number. This parameter has a long history for graphs (r = 2), and in this paper we begin its systematic study for hypergraphs.

Łuczak and Thomassé recently proved that the chromatic threshold of the so-called near bipartite graphs is zero, and our main contribution is to generalize this result to r-uniform hypergraphs. For this class of hypergraphs, we also show that the exact Turán number is achieved uniquely by the complete (r + 1)-partite hypergraph with nearly equal part sizes. This is one of very few infinite families of non-degenerate hypergraphs whose Turán number is determined exactly. In an attempt to generalize Thomassen's result that the chromatic threshold of triangle-free graphs is 1/3, we prove bounds for the chromatic threshold of the family of 3-uniform hypergraphs not containing {abc, abd, cde}, the so-called generalized triangle.

In order to prove upper bounds we introduce the concept of fibre bundles, which can be thought of as a hypergraph analogue of directed graphs. This leads to the notion of fibre bundle dimension, a structural property of fibre bundles that is based on the idea of Vapnik–Chervonenkis dimension in hypergraphs. Our lower bounds follow from explicit constructions, many of which use a hypergraph analogue of the Kneser graph. Using methods from extremal set theory, we prove that these Kneser hypergraphs have unbounded chromatic number. This generalizes a result of Szemerédi for graphs and might be of independent interest. Many open problems remain.

We give a new combinatorial interpretation of the stationary distribution of the (partially) asymmetric exclusion process on a finite number of sites in terms of decorated alternative trees and coloured permutations. The corresponding expressions of the multivariate partition functions are then related to multivariate generalisations of Eulerian polynomials for coloured permutations considered recently by N. Williams and the third author, and others. We also discuss stability and negative dependence properties satisfied by the partition functions.

The main result in Y. O. Hamidoune's paper ‘Adding distinct congruence classes' (Combin. Probab. Comput.7 (1998) 81–87) is as follows. If S is a generating subset of a cyclic group G such that 0 ∉ S and |S| ⩾ 5, then the number of sums of the subsets of S is at least min(|G|, 2|S|). Unfortunately, the argument of the author, who, sadly, passed away in 2011, relies on a lemma whose proof is incorrect; in fact, the lemma is false for all cyclic groups of even order. In this short note we point out this mistake, correct the proof, and discuss why the main result is actually true for all finite abelian groups.

Given a property of Boolean functions, what is the minimum number of queries required to determine with high probability if an input function satisfies this property or is ‘far’ from satisfying it? This is a fundamental question in property testing, where traditionally the testing algorithm is allowed to pick its queries among the entire set of inputs. Balcan, Blais, Blum and Yang have recently suggested restricting the tester to take its queries from a smaller random subset of polynomial size of the inputs. This model is called active testing, and in the extreme case when the size of the set we can query from is exactly the number of queries performed, it is known as passive testing.

We prove that passive or active testing of k-linear functions (that is, sums of k variables among n over $\mathbb{Z}$2) requires Θ(k log n) queries, assuming k is not too large. This extends the case k = 1, (that is, dictator functions), analysed by Balcan, Blais, Blum and Yang.

We also consider other classes of functions including low-degree polynomials, juntas, and partially symmetric functions. Our methods combine algebraic, combinatorial, and probabilistic techniques, including the Talagrand concentration inequality and the Erdős–Rado theorem on Δ-systems.

Recent inapproximability results of Sly (2010), together with an approximation algorithm presented by Weitz (2006), establish a beautiful picture of the computational complexity of approximating the partition function of the hard-core model. Let λc($\mathbb{T}_{\Delta}$) denote the critical activity for the hard-model on the infinite Δ-regular tree. Weitz presented an FPTAS for the partition function when λ < λc($\mathbb{T}_{\Delta}$) for graphs with constant maximum degree Δ. In contrast, Sly showed that for all Δ ⩾ 3, there exists εΔ > 0 such that (unless RP = NP) there is no FPRAS for approximating the partition function on graphs of maximum degree Δ for activities λ satisfying λc($\mathbb{T}_{\Delta}$) < λ < λc($\mathbb{T}_{\Delta}$) + εΔ.

We prove that a similar phenomenon holds for the antiferromagnetic Ising model. Sinclair, Srivastava and Thurley (2014) extended Weitz's approach to the antiferromagnetic Ising model, yielding an FPTAS for the partition function for all graphs of constant maximum degree Δ when the parameters of the model lie in the uniqueness region of the infinite Δ-regular tree. We prove the complementary result for the antiferromagnetic Ising model without external field, namely, that unless RP = NP, for all Δ ⩾ 3, there is no FPRAS for approximating the partition function on graphs of maximum degree Δ when the inverse temperature lies in the non-uniqueness region of the infinite tree $\mathbb{T}_{\Delta}$. Our proof works by relating certain second moment calculations for random Δ-regular bipartite graphs to the tree recursions used to establish the critical points on the infinite tree.

For positive integers n and q and a monotone graph property $\mathcal{A}$ , we consider the two-player, perfect information game WC(n, q, $\mathcal{A}$ ), which is defined as follows. The game proceeds in rounds. In each round, the first player, called Waiter, offers the second player, called Client, q + 1 edges of the complete graph Kn which have not been offered previously. Client then chooses one of these edges which he keeps and the remaining q edges go back to Waiter. If, at the end of the game, the graph which consists of the edges chosen by Client satisfies the property $\mathcal{A}$ , then Waiter is declared the winner; otherwise Client wins the game. In this paper we study such games (also known as Picker–Chooser games) for a variety of natural graph-theoretic parameters, such as the size of a largest component or the length of a longest cycle. In particular, we describe a phase transition type phenomenon which occurs when the parameter q is close to n and is reminiscent of phase transition phenomena in random graphs. Namely, we prove that if q ⩾ (1 + ϵ)n, then Client can avoid components of order cϵ−2 ln n for some absolute constant c > 0, whereas for q ⩽ (1 − ϵ)n, Waiter can force a giant, linearly sized component in Client's graph. In the second part of the paper, we prove that Waiter can force Client's graph to be pancyclic for every q ⩽ cn, where c > 0 is an appropriate constant. Note that this behaviour is in stark contrast to the threshold for pancyclicity and Hamiltonicity of random graphs.

An old conjecture of Z. Tuza says that for any graph G, the ratio of the minimum size, τ3(G), of a set of edges meeting all triangles to the maximum size, ν3(G), of an edge-disjoint triangle packing is at most 2. Here, disproving a conjecture of R. Yuster, we show that for any fixed, positive α there are arbitrarily large graphs G of positive density satisfying τ3(G) > (1 − o(1))|G|/2 and ν3(G) < (1 + α)|G|/4.

Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez introduced the notion of first-order convergence, which unifies the notions of convergence for sparse and dense graphs. They asked whether, if (Gi)i∈ℕ is a sequence of graphs with M being their first-order limit and v is a vertex of M, then there exists a sequence (vi)i∈ℕ of vertices such that the graphs Gi rooted at vi converge to M rooted at v. We show that this holds for almost all vertices v of M, and we give an example showing that the statement need not hold for all vertices.

In 1990 Bender, Canfield and McKay gave an asymptotic formula for the number of connected graphs on [n] = {1,2,. . .,n} with m edges, whenever n and the nullity m−n+1 tend to infinity. Let Cr(n,t) be the number of connected r-uniform hypergraphs on [n] with nullity t = (r−1)m−n+1, where m is the number of edges. For r ≥ 3, asymptotic formulae for Cr(n,t) are known only for partial ranges of the parameters: in 1997 Karoński and Łuczak gave one for t = o(log n/log log n), and recently Behrisch, Coja-Oghlan and Kang gave one for t=Θ(n). Here we prove such a formula for any fixed r ≥ 3 and any t = t(n) satisfying t = o(n) and t→∞ as n→∞, complementing the last result. This leaves open only the case t/n→∞, which we expect to be much simpler, and will consider in future work. The proof is based on probabilistic methods, and in particular on a bivariate local limit theorem for the number of vertices and edges in the largest component of a certain random hypergraph. We deduce this from the corresponding central limit theorem by smoothing techniques.

In this note we establish a uniform bound for the distribution of a sum Sn=X1+···+Xn of independent non-homogeneous Bernoulli trials. Specifically, we prove that σn(Sn = j) ≤ η, where σn denotes the standard deviation of Sn, and η is a universal constant. We compute the best possible constant η ~ 0.4688 and we show that the bound also holds for limits of sums and differences of Bernoullis, including the Poisson laws which constitute the worst case and attain the bound. We also investigate the optimal bounds for n and j fixed. An application to estimate the rate of convergence of Mann's fixed-point iterations is presented.

A uniform hypergraph H is called k-Ramsey for a hypergraph F if, no matter how one colours the edges of H with k colours, there is always a monochromatic copy of F. We say that H is k-Ramsey-minimal for F if H is k-Ramsey for F but every proper subhypergraph of H is not. Burr, Erdős and Lovasz studied various parameters of Ramsey-minimal graphs. In this paper we initiate the study of minimum degrees and codegrees of Ramsey-minimal 3-uniform hypergraphs. We show that the smallest minimum vertex degree over all k-Ramsey-minimal 3-uniform hypergraphs for Kt(3) is exponential in some polynomial in k and t. We also study the smallest possible minimum codegree over 2-Ramsey-minimal 3-uniform hypergraphs.

In [1], the authors consider a random walk (Zn,1, . . ., Zn,K+1) ∈ ${\mathbb{Z}}$K+1 with the constraint that each coordinate of the walk is at distance one from the following coordinate. A functional central limit theorem for the first coordinate is proved and the limit variance is explicited. In this paper, we study an extended version of this model by conditioning the extremal coordinates to be at some fixed distance at every time. We prove a functional central limit theorem for this random walk. Using combinatorial tools, we give a precise formula of the variance and compare it with that obtained in [1].

We study 3-random-like graphs, that is, sequences of graphs in which the densities of triangles and anti-triangles converge to 1/8. Since the random graph $\mathcal{G}$n,1/2 is, in particular, 3-random-like, this can be viewed as a weak version of quasi-randomness. We first show that 3-random-like graphs are 4-universal, that is, they contain induced copies of all 4-vertex graphs. This settles a question of Linial and Morgenstern [10]. We then show that for larger subgraphs, 3-random-like sequences demonstrate completely different behaviour. We prove that for every graph H on n ⩾ 13 vertices there exist 3-random-like graphs without an induced copy of H. Moreover, we prove that for every ℓ there are 3-random-like graphs which are ℓ-universal but not m-universal when m is sufficiently large compared to ℓ.

Random increasing k-trees represent an interesting and useful class of strongly dependent graphs that have been studied widely, including being used recently as models for complex networks. In this paper we study an informative notion called BFS-profile and derive, by several analytic means, asymptotic estimates for its expected value, together with the limiting distribution in certain cases; some interesting consequences predicting more precisely the shapes of random k-trees are also given. Our methods of proof rely essentially on a bijection between k-trees and ordinary trees, the resolution of linear systems, and a specially framed notion called Flajolet–Odlyzko admissibility.

The discrete Green's function (without boundary) $\mathbb{G}$ is a pseudo-inverse of the combinatorial Laplace operator of a graph G = (V, E). We reveal the intimate connection between Green's function and the theory of exact stopping rules for random walks on graphs. We give an elementary formula for Green's function in terms of state-to-state hitting times of the underlying graph. Namely,$\mathbb{G}(i,j) = \pi_j \bigl( H(\pi,j) - H(i,j) \bigr),$ where πi is the stationary distribution at vertex i, H(i, j) is the expected hitting time for a random walk starting from vertex i to first reach vertex j, and H(π, j) = ∑k∈V πkH(k, j). This formula also holds for the digraph Laplace operator.

The most important characteristics of a stopping rule are its exit frequencies, which are the expected number of exits of a given vertex before the rule halts the walk. We show that Green's function is, in fact, a matrix of exit frequencies plus a rank one matrix. In the undirected case, we derive spectral formulas for Green's function and for some mixing measures arising from stopping rules. Finally, we further explore the exit frequency matrix point of view, and discuss a natural generalization of Green's function for any distribution τ defined on the vertex set of the graph.

In the tournament game two players, called Maker and Breaker, alternately take turns in claiming an unclaimed edge of the complete graph Kn and selecting one of the two possible orientations. Before the game starts, Breaker fixes an arbitrary tournament Tk on k vertices. Maker wins if, at the end of the game, her digraph contains a copy of Tk; otherwise Breaker wins. In our main result, we show that Maker has a winning strategy for k = (2 − o(1))log2n, improving the constant factor in previous results of Beck and the second author. This is asymptotically tight since it is known that for k = (2 − o(1))log2n Breaker can prevent the underlying graph of Maker's digraph from containing a k-clique. Moreover, the precise value of our lower bound differs from the upper bound only by an additive constant of 12.

We also discuss the question of whether the random graph intuition, which suggests that the threshold for k is asymptotically the same for the game played by two ‘clever’ players and the game played by two ‘random’ players, is supported by the tournament game. It will turn out that, while a straightforward application of this intuition fails, a more subtle version of it is still valid.

Finally, we consider the orientation game version of the tournament game, where Maker wins the game if the final digraph – also containing the edges directed by Breaker – possesses a copy of Tk. We prove that in that game Breaker has a winning strategy for k = (4 + o(1))log2n.

We study the expected value of the length Ln of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph Kn when each edge e is given an independent uniform [0, 1] edge weight. We sharpen the result of Frieze [6] that limn→∞$\mathbb{E}$(Ln) = ζ(3) and show that

Suppose that X1, X2, . . . are independent identically distributed Bernoulli random variables with mean p. A Bernoulli factory for a function f takes as input X1, X2, . . . and outputs a random variable that is Bernoulli with mean f(p). A fast algorithm is a function that only depends on the values of X1, . . ., XT, where T is a stopping time with small mean. When f(p) is a real analytic function the problem reduces to being able to draw from linear functions Cp for a constant C > 1. Also it is necessary that Cp ⩽ 1 − ε for known ε > 0. Previous methods for this problem required extensive modification of the algorithm for every value of C and ε. These methods did not have explicit bounds on $\mathbb{E}[T]$ as a function of C and ε. This paper presents the first Bernoulli factory for f(p) = Cp with bounds on $\mathbb{E}[T]$ as a function of the input parameters. In fact, supp∈[0,(1−ε)/C]$\mathbb{E}[T]$ ≤ 9.5ε−1C. In addition, this method is very simple to implement. Furthermore, a lower bound on the average running time of any Cp Bernoulli factory is shown. For ε ⩽ 1/2, supp∈[0,(1−ε)/C]$\mathbb{E}[T]$≥0.004Cε−1, so the new method is optimal up to a constant in the running time.
