Fix \alpha >0$\alpha >0$. Then by Fejér's theorem (\alpha (\log n)^{A}\,\mathrm {mod}\,1)_{n\geq 1}$(\alpha (\log n)^{A}\,\mathrm {mod}\,1)_{n\geq 1}$ is uniformly distributed if and only if A>1$A>1$. We sharpen this by showing that all correlation functions, and hence the gap distribution, are Poissonian provided A>1$A>1$. This is the first example of a deterministic sequence modulo 1$1$ whose gap distribution and all of whose correlations are proven to be Poissonian. The range of A$A$ is optimal and complements a result of Marklof and Strömbergsson who found the limiting gap distribution of (\log (n)\, \mathrm {mod}\,1)$(\log (n)\, \mathrm {mod}\,1)$, which is necessarily not Poissonian.

We prove Chai's conjecture on the additivity of the base change conductor of semiabelian varieties in the case of Jacobians of proper curves. This includes the first infinite family of non-trivial wildly ramified examples. Along the way, we extend Raynaud's construction of the Néron lft-model of a Jacobian in terms of the Picard functor to arbitrary seminormal curves (beyond which Jacobians admit no Néron lft-models, as shown by our more general structural results). Finally, we investigate the structure of Jacobians of (not necessarily geometrically reduced) proper curves over fields of degree of imperfection at most one and prove two conjectures about the existence of Néron models and Néron lft-models due to Bosch–Lütkebohmert–Raynaud for Jacobians of general proper curves in the case of perfect residue fields, thus strengthening the author's previous results in this situation.

Without using the p$p$-adic Langlands correspondence, we prove that for many finite-length smooth representations of \mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Q}_p)$\mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Q}_p)$ on p$p$-torsion modules the \mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Q}_p)$\mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Q}_p)$-linear morphisms coincide with the morphisms that are linear for the normalizer of a parahoric subgroup. We identify this subgroup to be the Iwahori subgroup in the supersingular case, and \mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Z}_p)$\mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Z}_p)$ in the principal series case. As an application, we relate the action of parahoric subgroups to the action of the inertia group of \mathrm {Gal}(\overline {\mathbf {Q}}_p/\mathbf {Q}_p)$\mathrm {Gal}(\overline {\mathbf {Q}}_p/\mathbf {Q}_p)$, and we prove that if an irreducible Banach space representation \Pi$\Pi$ of \mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Q}_p)$\mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Q}_p)$ has infinite \mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Z}_p)$\mathrm {GL}_2(\mathbf {Z}_p)$-length, then a twist of \Pi$\Pi$ has locally algebraic vectors. This answers a question of Dospinescu. We make the simplifying assumption that p > 3$p > 3$ and that all our representations are generic.

We define an involution on the elliptic space of tempered unipotent representations of inner twists of a split simple p$p$-adic group G$G$ and investigate its behaviour with respect to restrictions to reductive quotients of maximal compact open subgroups. In particular, we formulate a precise conjecture about the relation with a version of Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform on the space of unipotent representations of the (possibly disconnected) reductive quotients of maximal compact subgroups. We give evidence for the conjecture, including proofs for {\mathsf {SL}}_n${\mathsf {SL}}_n$ and {\mathsf {PGL}}_n${\mathsf {PGL}}_n$.

In this paper we prove a new generic vanishing theorem for X$X$ a complete homogeneous variety with respect to an action of a connected algebraic group. Let A, B_0\subset X$A, B_0\subset X$ be locally closed affine subvarieties, and assume that B_0$B_0$ is smooth and pure dimensional. Let {\mathcal {P}}${\mathcal {P}}$ be a perverse sheaf on A$A$ and let B=g B_0$B=g B_0$ be a generic translate of B_0$B_0$. Then our theorem implies (-1)^{\operatorname {codim} B}\chi (A\cap B, {\mathcal {P}}|_{A\cap B})\geq 0$(-1)^{\operatorname {codim} B}\chi (A\cap B, {\mathcal {P}}|_{A\cap B})\geq 0$. As an application, we prove in full generality a positivity conjecture about the signed Euler characteristic of generic triple intersections of Schubert cells. Such Euler characteristics are known to be the structure constants for the multiplication of the Segre–Schwartz–MacPherson classes of these Schubert cells.
