Most results in multifractal analysis are obtained using either a thermodynamic approach based on the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states or an orbit-gluing approach based on some version of the specification property. A general framework incorporating the most important multifractal spectra was introduced by Barreira and Saussol, who used the thermodynamic approach to establish the multifractal formalism in the uniformly hyperbolic setting, unifying many existing results. We extend this framework to apply to a broad class of non-uniformly hyperbolic systems, including examples with phase transitions, and obtain new results for a number of examples that have already been studied using the orbit-gluing approach. We compare the thermodynamic and orbit-gluing approaches and give a survey of many of the multifractal results in the literature.

The derivation of Ruelle’s derivative formula of the SRB measure depends largely on the calculation of the derivative of the unstable Jacobian. Although Ruelle’s derivative formula is correct, the proofs in the original paper and its corrigendum are not complete. In this paper, we re-visit the differentiation process of the unstable Jacobian and provide a complete derivation of its derivative formula. Our approach is to extend the volume form provided by the SRB measure on local unstable manifolds to a system of Hölder continuous local Riemannian metrics on the manifold so that under this system of local metrics, the unstable Jacobian becomes differentiable with respect to the base point and its derivative with respect to the map can be obtained by the chain rule.

We give a classification of all the C*-algebras of Morse-Smale flows on closed two-manifolds, and determine the relation between the invariants of dynamical systems and the topological invariants of the C*-algebras.

Given a semigroup of surjective local homeomorphisms on a compact space X we consider the corresponding semigroup of *-endomorphisms on C(X) and discuss the possibility of extending it to an interaction group, a concept recently introduced by the first named author. We also define a transformation groupoid whose C*-algebra turns out to be isomorphic to the crossed product algebra for the interaction group. Several examples are considered, including one which gives rise to a slightly different construction and should be interpreted as being the C*-algebra of a certain polymorphism.

The rotation number of a diffeomorphism f: S1 → S1 with lift is defined as . We investigate the case where f is an endomorphism. Then this limit may not exist and may depend on x. We investigate the set of limit points of , as a function of x.

The two-dimensional analogue of the Sharkovski order on periods for maps of the interval restricts to a partial order on essential pseudo-Anosov conjugacy classes in the mapping class group of the $n$-times punctured disk. In this paper we give an explicit description of this restricted partial order in the case when $n=3$.

We present an existence theorem for certain kinds of orbits of a monotone twist map and use it to obtain a criterion for proving that there are no invariant circles with a certain range of rotation numbers. We have used this criterion to prove (computer assisted) that the standard map has no invariant circles for several parameter values including k = 0.9718.

There exist uniquely ergodic bijective affine interval exchange transformations of $[0,1)$ having wandering intervals and such that the support of the invariant measure is a Cantor set.

In this paper we obtain a polynomial error term for the closed orbit counting function associated to certain hyperbolic flows. In the case of weak-mixing transitive Anosov flows no further conditions are required; for general weak-mixing hyperbolic flows a diophantine condition on the periods of the closed orbits is required.

We consider some non-uniformly hyperbolic invertible dynamical systems which are modeled by a Gibbs–Markov–Young tower. We assume a polynomial tail for the inducing time and a polynomial control of hyperbolicity, as introduced by Alves, Pinheiro and Azevedo. These systems admit a physical measure with polynomial rate of mixing. In this paper we prove that the distribution of the number of visits to a ball $B(x,r)$ converges to a Poisson distribution as the radius $r\rightarrow 0$ and after suitable normalization.

The multicorns are the connectedness loci of unicritical antiholomorphic polynomials $\bar{z}^{d}+c$. We investigate the structure of boundaries of hyperbolic components: we prove that the structure of bifurcations from hyperbolic components of even period is as one would expect for maps that depend holomorphically on a complex parameter (for instance, as for the Mandelbrot set; in this setting, this is a non-obvious fact), while the bifurcation structure at hyperbolic components of odd period is very different. In particular, the boundaries of odd period hyperbolic components consist only of parabolic parameters, and there are bifurcations between hyperbolic components along entire arcs, but only of bifurcation ratio 2. We also count the number of hyperbolic components of any period of the multicorns. Since antiholomorphic polynomials depend only real-analytically on the parameters, most of the techniques used in this paper are quite different from the ones used to prove the corresponding results in a holomorphic setting.

We study thermodynamic formalism for the family of robustly transitive diffeomorphisms introduced by Mañé, establishing existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for natural classes of potential functions. In particular, we characterize the Sinaĭ–Ruelle–Bowen measures for these diffeomorphisms as unique equilibrium states for a suitable geometric potential. We also obtain large deviations and multifractal results for the unique equilibrium states produced by the main theorem.

We show that Bowen’s equation, which characterizes the Hausdorff dimension of certain sets in terms of the topological pressure of an expanding conformal map, applies in greater generality than has been heretofore established. In particular, we consider an arbitrary subset Z of a compact metric space and require only that the lower Lyapunov exponents be positive on Z, together with a tempered contraction condition. Among other things, this allows us to compute the dimension spectrum for Lyapunov exponents for maps with parabolic periodic points, and to relate the Hausdorff dimension to the topological entropy for arbitrary subsets of symbolic space with the appropriate metric.

Letf: M → M be a C1 map on a compact manifold. We give a topological condition under which f has an even number of periodic points with a given period. We also obtain a sufficient condition, in terms of homology, for ƒ to have infinitely many periodic points.

We obtain a central limit theorem, local limit theorems and renewal theorems for stationary processes generated by skew product maps $T(\unicode[STIX]{x1D714},x)=(\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}\unicode[STIX]{x1D714},T_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}x)$ together with a $T$-invariant measure whose base map $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ satisfies certain topological and mixing conditions and the maps $T_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}$ on the fibers are certain non-singular distance-expanding maps. Our results hold true when $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ is either a sufficiently fast mixing Markov shift with positive transition densities or a (non-uniform) Young tower with at least one periodic point and polynomial tails. The proofs are based on the random complex Ruelle–Perron–Frobenius theorem from Hafouta and Kifer [Nonconventional Limit Theorems and Random Dynamics. World Scientific, Singapore, 2018] applied with appropriate random transfer operators generated by $T_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}$, together with certain regularity assumptions (as functions of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$) of these operators. Limit theorems for deterministic processes whose distributions on the fibers are generated by Markov chains with transition operators satisfying a random version of the Doeblin condition are also obtained. The main innovation in this paper is that the results hold true even though the spectral theory used in Aimino, Nicol and Vaienti [Annealed and quenched limit theorems for random expanding dynamical systems. Probab. Theory Related Fields162 (2015), 233–274] does not seem to be applicable, and the dual of the Koopman operator of $T$ (with respect to the invariant measure) does not seem to have a spectral gap.

The aim of this paper is to present a one-parameter family X_a of three-dimensional vector fields which has infinitely many persistent Hénon-like strange attractors. This family also has infinitely many periodic attractors for values of the parameter in an open set.

We investigate algebraic properties of the automorphism group of multidimensional shifts of finite type (SFTs). We show that positive entropy implies that the automorphism group contains every finite group and, together with transitivity, implies that the center of the automorphism group is trivial (i.e. consists only of the shift action). We also show that positive entropy and dense minimal points (in particular, dense periodic points) imply that the automorphism group of X contains a copy of the automorphism group of the one-dimensional full shift, and hence contains non-trivial elements of infinite order. On the other hand we construct a mixing, positive-entropy SFT whose automorphism group is, modulo the shift action, a union of finite groups.

A space X is said to be almost totally disconnected if the set of its degenerate components is dense in X. We prove that an almost totally disconnected compact metric space admits a minimal map if and only if either it is a finite set or it has no isolated point. As a consequence we obtain a characterization of minimal sets on dendrites and local dendrites.

Some conditions are given under which the Hausdorff dimension of an attractor of an endomorphism of a surface can be determined using the pressure formula.

In this paper we prove results about lifting dynamical and ergodic properties of a given smooth dynamical system to its skew-product extensions by smooth cocycles. The classical small divisor argument shows that in general such results are not possible. However, using the notion of the ‘fast periodic approximation’ introduced by A. Katok, we will show that if the dynamical system admits such a ‘fast periodic approximation’ then indeed a certain qualitative behaviour which is prohibited by small divisor type conditions is now in fact generic. The techniques are also applied to show that ‘recurrent-proximal’ behaviour of solutions of linear differential equations with almost periodic coefficients is generic under suitable conditions on the coefficient matrix.
