Acute Confusional Syndrome (ACS) is the most common neuropsychiatric complication in COVID-19 infection. Its management is still a challenge because the data and recommendations based on the evidence are limited.

To describe the differential characteristics in the management of ACS in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia compared to ACS secondary to other causes.

We present a descriptive study that is has been carried out in 62 patients with ACS (26 of them diagnosed with COVID 19 pneumonia), who have required assessment by the liaison psychiatry service of Hospital del Mar between February and April, 2020. The sample was divided in 2 groups (with and without COVID 19 pneumonia). Chi square and Fisher’s tests were used to comparisons.

Dexmetomidine (26 vs 0) and olanzapine (13 vs 3) were significantly more frequently used in COVID-19 patients (p< 0 001). A greater number of different antipsychotic drugs were used in COVID 19 patients (2.40± 1 323 number of drugs), (p<0.0001). Further neuroimaging tests were requested in COVID 19 patients and they received less family support (4) compared to non COVID-19 (22), (p<0.005).

ACS associated with COVID-19 pneumonia in the patients in our sample is more difficult to manage than ACS associated with other pathologies, similar to which described in other series. It is associated with a longer duration of confusional symptoms and difficulties for control it.

Eating disorders (EDs) constitute serious mental illnesses with high morbidity, lifetime mortality and associated stigma due to the label of mental illness. The sparse research assessing adolescents’ knowledge of and attitudes towards EDs highlights their low understanding of these conditions.

The proposed study aims to bridge this gap by investigating adolescents’ knowledge of and attitudes towards EDs as this will inform young people’s engagement with ED services.

Participants aged 12-18 will be randomly assigned a vignette depicting either a male or female 15-year-old displaying symptoms of anorexia nervosa (AN) or binge eating disorder (BED). They will be asked to select what they believe the condition described in the vignette is from a pre-determined list. They will then be informed of the correct diagnosis before completing a series of scales designed to assess their attitudes towards EDs. Participants’ own potentially disordered eating behaviours will be assessed using the ED risk composite (EDRC) subscale from the EDI-3.

It is expected that BED will be less likely to be correctly identified compared to AN, eliciting more stigma and male vignette subjects will be seen more negatively than female vignette subjects. Also, it is expected that participants with higher EDRC scores will have more knowledge of and less negative attitudes towards EDs than those with lower EDRC scores.

This study will highlight the need for education around EDs targeted at adolescents to increase their knowledge and awareness, providing them with factual information ought to reduce stigma and negative attitudes and beliefs about EDs.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative pathology that develops mainly in elderly and senile people. Disruption of BDNF transport or suppression of its production appears to be typical for people of old age. Objective: To investigate the influence of Alzheimer’s disease on the secretion of brain factors and correlate with neuropsychological profiles.

12 men (2) and women (10) with Alzheimer’s disease were examined. The average age of the subjects was 76.25 + 4.89. Methods: MMSE, ADAS-COG, laboratory - BDNF was performed using the G7611 BDNF Emax (R) ImmunoAssaySystem 5 x 96 wells, BDNF Emax® Immunological test.

2 patients have mild dementia, 8 patients have moderate dementia, 2 patients have severe dementia. The average age of patients with mild dementia was 72.0 + 1.0. The average MMSE score is 16.7 + 3.4.

Correlation analysis showed a close relationship between a pronounced decrease in memory in memory tests (ADAS-COG) and a pronounced decrease in blood BDNF content (r = 0.676). A close statistically significant relationship was found between a low result of the recognition test and a low blood BDNF content (r = 0.598).

We assume that blood BDNF is a marker of pathologically accelerated aging of the central nervous system, since low test results for mnestic function are an indicator of severe degeneration in Alzheimer’s disease.

There are relatively fewer pharmacogenetic studies of antipsychotics in adolescents than in adult patients. The development of personalized pharmacotherapy is promising.

Identify the most significant pharmacogenetic predictors of antipsychotic safety in adolescents experiencing acute psychotic episodes

The study included 101 adolescents diagnosed with acute polymorphic psychotic disorder at the time of admission (F23.0-9 according to ICD-10). All patients were taking an antipsychotic as their main treatment for 14 days. Children’s Global Assessment Scale (CGAS), Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS), Clinical Global Impression Severity (CGI-S) and Improvement (CGI-I), UKU Side Effects Rating Scale (UKU SERS), Sympson-Angus Scale (SAS), Barnes Akathisia rating scale (BARS) were used. All study participants underwent pharmacogenetic testing of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic factors.

CYP2D6 “intermediate” metabolism increased the risk of developing an adverse reaction by a trend of significance (OR=2.616 (95% CI 0.950-7.203); p=0.063). Carriage of HTR2A rs6313 was associated with a lower score on the UKU SERS “Other Symptoms” subscale (Beta=(-0.289); p=0.003) and an objective score on the BARS akathisia severity scale (Beta=(-0.217); p=0.029). DRD3 rs324026 carriers had a lower BARS akathisia scale score (Beta=(-0.349); p=0.004); DRD3 rs6280 carriers had a lower SAS extrapyramidal symptom severity scale score (Beta=(-0.351); p=0.003). Carriers of ANKS1B rs7968606 were associated with a higher SAS scale score (Beta=0.237; p=0.017).

We proposed that genotyping of CYP2D6*4, *10, DRD3 rs324026 (C allele), DRD3 rs6280 (C allele), HTR2A rs6313 (TT genotype) and ANKS1B rs7968606 (T allele) will predict the high risk of intolerance to antipsychotics in adolescents with acute psychotic episodes.

Affective symptoms are a common feature of schizophrenia and define bipolar disorder. Alterations in dopamine neurotransmission and activity at D3-D2 receptors is associated with depressive symptoms providing the rationale for targeting D3-D2 receptors with partial agonists.

The aim of the analysis herein is to examine and compare the efficacy of cariprazine in treating affective symptoms in both schizophrenia and bipolar depression.

Data from 3 schizophrenia [NCT00694707, NCT01104766, NCT01104779] and 3 bipolar I depression studies [NCT013896447, NCT02670538, NCT0267055] were pooled for the analyses. To investigate efficacy across individual affective symptoms, the Marder anxiety/depression and negative symptom items of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and single items of the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) were analysed. Improvement across affective symptoms was examined primarily evaluating least square mean differences (LSMDs) in comparison to placebo in mean change from baseline.

The pooled ITT population was comprised of persons with schizophrenia (placebo=442, cariprazine=1024) and bipolar disorder (placebo=460, cariprazine=923). Cariprazine resulted in a significantly greater reduction when compared to placebo in three out of the four Marder anxiety/depression items; anxiety (p<0.01), tension (p<0.001) and depression (p<0.05). Similarly, cariprazine was significantly better than placebo in 9 out of the 10 MADRS individual items; apparent sadness (p<0.001), reported sadness (p<0.001), reduced sleep (p<0.05), reduced appetite (p<0.001), concentration difficulties (p<0.001), lassitude (p<0.001), inability to feel (p<0.001), pessimistic thoughts (p<0.01) and suicidal thoughts (p<0.05).

The results herein indicate that cariprazine treatment is significantly effective at treating affective symptoms in persons with both schizophrenia and bipolar I depression.

Early detection of psychosis is a promising area in preventive psychiatry. The use of early intervention can prevent the first episode psychosis and improve outcomes.

Identification of premorbid features of depressive patients at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) comparing with depressive patients without CHR in order to improve early recognition of the psychotic process.

219 young depressive in-patients with CHR criteria for SOPS with attenuated positive and attenuated negative symptoms and 52 young depressive in-patients without CHR were examined. Presence of obstetric complications, neurodevelopmental deviance, neurological and psychiatric signs at the premorbid stage, and the level of premorbid functioning on the PAS were examined.

It has been established that depressive patients at CHR and without CHR had some obstetric complications (57.5% and 40.4%, respectively). Neurodevelopmental deviance in the first year of live was in 57.5% patients with CHR. At the age of 3-5 sleep disorders, ADHD and phobias were more common in patients at CHR than without it (58.8% and 32.7%, p=0.014). In pubertal, patients at CHR were more likely to show depression symptoms, obsessions, and aggression - 90.4% versus 76.9% (p=0.029). On the PAS scale, a decrease of the level of premorbid functioning has been observed in two groups of patients with and without CHR from the age of 12: from 12 to 15 years, 0.4 and 0.3 (p=0.004), from 16 to 18 years, 0.47 and 0.37 (p 0.001).

Premorbid functioning were worst in patients with CHR, which indicates the possibility of early clinical detection of psychosis.

The sense of agency concerns the experience of controlling our actions, referring both to superior and lower levels of psychological functioning that are also related to the physical dimension of agency. Diverse clinical conditions affect the awareness of being a bodily and agentive self.

The aim of this systematic review was to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the relationship between individual sense of agency and body perception.

PsycINFO, Psycharticle, Medline, Web of Science and Scopus were systematically searched for articles published until 19/10/2020.

After removing duplicates, a total of 2.556 records was screened. Fifteen articles were selected based on the inclusion criteria fixed for the systematic review.

In the last decades, this line of research seems to attract a growing number of studies.

However, these studies are affected by a great heterogeneity in the investigation of both constructs.

Body perception and sense agency were operationalized across research in diverse ways, making the evaluation of the relationship between them very difficult. In addition, there is a paucity of studies investigating the relationship between body perception and agency among individuals suffering from specific psychopathology or physical diseases. According to literature review, the main objective for future research is to develop more robust approaches to estimate the variability of these constructs such as their relationship.

Reported prevalence rates of medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) in people aged ≥65 years range between 1.5 and 18%. People with MUS often describe a low quality of life and frequently suffer from co-morbid anxiety and depressive disorders. In our pilot study on older patients with MUS, the level of somatic comorbidity as well as frailty parameters were significantly higher among patients with MUS which was partially explained by a somatic origin compared to patients with MUS for which no explanation at all was found.

The objective of this study was to examine the level of frailty and somatic comorbidity in older patients with medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) and compare this to patients with medically explained symptoms (MES).

Frailty was assessed according to Fried’s criteria (gait speed, handgrip strength, unintentional weight loss, exhaustion, and low physical activity), somatic comorbidity according to the self-report Charlson Comorbidity Index and the number of prescribed medications.

Although MUS-patients had less physical comorbidity compared to MES-patients, they were prescribed the same number of medications. Moreover, MUS-patients were more often frail compared to MES-patients. Among MUS-patients, physical frailty was associated with the severity of unexplained symptoms, the level of hypochondriacal beliefs, and the level of somatisation.

Despite a lower prevalence of overt somatic diseases, MUS-patients are more frail compared to older MES-patients. These results suggest that at least in some patients age-related phenomena might be erroneously classified as MUS, which may affect treatment strategy.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common mental disorder and a major cause of disability worldwide. Typically, it has a chronic course, marked by recurrent intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Its pharmacological first line of treatment has been well established for several years now, with the Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SRIs). However, about half of the patients are resistant to this approach, representing a therapeutic challenge for clinicians. Evidence suggests that other medications can augment SRIs, enhancing its effects and achieving a bigger efficacy in these patients’ treatment. Also, there is an increasing interest in neurosurgical interventions in these patients.

The main goal of this work was to assess the clinical efficacy of adjunctive therapeutic strategies in patients with OCD resistant to SRIs.

A literature review was conducted searching PubMed and ScienceDirect databases from the 1st of January 2000 to the 1st of September 2021 to identify clinical trials comparing an active drug/neurosurgical intervention with placebo as an adjunctive therapeutic strategy in SRI-resistant OCD.

Sixteen studies were selected for data extraction, including a total of 585 patients. Risperidone, aripiprazole, N-acetylcysteine, lamotrigine, pindolol, riluzole, memantine and methylphenidate were efficacious for augmenting SRIs in OCD. Ablative surgery (ABL) and deep brain stimulation (DBS) were equal effective in the treatment of refractory OCD.

Several therapeutic options presented as potentially effective in OCD when it is resistant to SRIs, although this is still an area for further research.

Description of a structured work of primary prevention, based on a survey of the prevalence of suicidal behavior in the Brazilian population throughout life, performed by an academic service of psychiatry and chemical dependence. We describe a survey of the probability of suicide attempt in an academic internment service focused on psychiatry and drug addiction in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Raise awareness of the need to call for help and 24-hour distress hotline phone outreach. Calculate a possible demand for mental health services to patients with severe suicidal behavior aiming at the necessary equipment to attend this population.

Clarification actions through the press, development of a suicide prevention lecture program given in schools, surveillance cameras, military institutions, companies and laws, promotion of public events with music, activities, distribution of t-shirts, booklets and leaflets.Using the mental health care implementation system: identifying the patient, raising their needs and available resources, breaking resistance, advocating and treating, we raised in this institution that from January 01, 2019 to September 01, 2019, 137 patients were hospitalized with a serious suicide attempt.

According to a survey of the prevalence of suicidal behavior in the Brazilian population over the course of life, where out of 100 patients, 17 had suicidal thoughts, 5 planned, 3 attempted suicide and 1 was treated in the emergency room.

The suicide prevention program has been very successful as the press promotes of the telephone number for immediate relief. His survey highlighted the need to create a specific suicide treatment and prevention program.

Schizophrenia is a severe and chronic disorder causing significant disability and functional decline. Schizophrenia is a polygenic disease, with about 100 monogenic sites and 11 sites of chromosomal deletions / duplications involved in its pathogenesis identified. It is a pleiotropic disease, with causative genetic changes leading to multiple symptoms, including bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, mental retardation and epilepsy. The chromosomal microarray (CMA) technology detects submicroscopic chromosomal changes, which are involved in neurodevelopmental disorders, and are subject to prenatal diagnosis. Pathological findings in CMA are detected in 10-20% of patients with neurodevelopmental disorders and can contribute significantly to medical follow-up, prognosis assessment, influence treatment choice, and allow prenatal diagnosis. Preliminary studies in schizophrenia identified pathological CMA findings in 10–30% of patients.

Recruitment of schizophrenia patients from the Haifa and Western Galilee districts of Clalit, genetic counseling in Carmel Hospital, CMA testing of the consenting patients.

Schizophrenia patients with and without neurodevelopmental disorders underwent CMA analysis, with the findings of significant chromosomal submicroscopic disorders (such as 22q11 microdeletion, among others) in 30% of the patients, providing the explanation for the patients’ symptoms and enabling specific medical follow-up and adjusted pharmacological treatment.

CMA can be used in diagnosing schizophrenia, assessing prognosis, adjusting pharmacological treatment and follow-up and providing genetic counseling including prenatal diagnosis, as in cases neurodevelopmental disorders. The findings support the application of CMA as part of a routine procedures in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is associated with disturbances in neurophysiological processes. However, the relation of EEG and ERP parameters to structural supragranular cortical abnormalities, observed in schizophrenia, remains unclear.

The purpose was to characterize EEG and ERP disturbances and their relationship to changes occurring in supragranular cortical layers in subjects with schizophrenia.

43 first-episode schizophrenia (FES) male patients and 43 matched healthy controls (HC) underwent background EEG and standard two-tones oddball ERP recording and structural MRI at 3T Philips scanner. MRI images were processed via FreeSurfer and MATLAB to derive two markers specific to supragranular thickness change: gyral-sulcal thickness differences (GSTD) and gyral-sulcal intrinsic curvature differences on pial surface (GSCD) (github.com/kwagstyl/schizophrenia_gyral_sulcal).

Theta rhythm spectral power was increased in FES while P300 amplitudes and latencies, N100 (to non-targets) amplitudes, alpha rhythm spectral power were not altered compared to HC. GSCD measures were increased in temporal, parietal and occipital cortices, whereas both GSTD and GSCD were increased in the right frontal cortex in FES. No correlations between altered EEG and supragranular thickness markers survived correction for multiple comparisons.

Presumably, theta rhythm has a widespread circuit of generators, including the cortical ones. However, we have not found correlations between EEG and supragranular markers in FES. Considering an absence of correlations between theta and hippocampal volumes (Lebedeva et al., 2020), a speculative interpretation is that the neurophysiological disturbances may be associated with a more complex patterns of more localized structural and functional impairments.

Timely detection of suicidal thoughts is one of the ways to prevent suicide. Use the psychiatric interview only for this purpose in adolescents is often insufficient due to poor compliance. Thus, the search for objective neurophysiological markers of suicidal ideation in adolescents seems to be actual.

The aim of the study was to reveal the relationships between pre-treatment EEG parameters and intensity of suicidal ideation in depressive female adolescents.

72 female depressive patients (all right-handed, age 16–25, mean 18,2±2.6 years old) were enrolled in the study. Pre-treatment total HDRS-17 scores varied from 13 to 43 (mean 26,9±7.5). Multichannel eyes closed EEG was recorded, and absolute spectral power was calculated in 8 narrow frequency sub-bands. All patients answered the inventory on intensity of suicidal thoughts. Spearman’s correlations between pre-treatment EEG parameters and suicidal ideation scores were analyzed.

Scores of intensity of suicidal ideation correlated positively (p<0.05÷0.01) with values of EEG alpha2 (9-11 Hz) spectral power in F7, F8, F4, C3, C4, T4, P4 and O2 EEG leads, as well as with values of EEG delta (2-4 Hz) spectral power in F7, F3 and C3 EEG leads (p<0.05).

The intensity of suicidal ideation in depressive female adolescents associates with wide propagation of EEG alpha2, especially over the right hemisphere, and with EEG signs of decreased functional state of anterior regions of the left hemisphere. The study supported by RBRF grant No.20-013-00129a.

Neuroimaging findings have reported aberrant functional connectivity in brain regions involved reward system in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) altering hedonic processing over food. Likewise, endocannabinoids such as Anandamide (AEA) and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) have been involved in rewarding aspects of food intake.

To identify nucleus accumbens (NAcc) functional connectivity with whole-brain comparing between individuals with AN and controls. Furthermore, in a sub-study, to explore the interaction between NAcc functional connectivity and peripheral AEA and 2-AG levels.

A total of 60 adult women (18 to 56 years of age) took part in the present study. Twenty-six individuals belonged to the AN group (BMI<18) and 34 to the HC group (BMI=18-24.99). All participants underwent functional magnetic resonance in resting-state, and blood samples were obtained in fasting.

Negative functional connectivity was observed in the AN group compared with the control group between the NAcc and the cerebellum (pFWE<.001), between the NAcc and the insula (pFWE<.001), between the NAcc and the supramarginal gyrus (pFWE=.019), and between the NAcc and the postcentral gyrus (pFWE=.010). Analyses exploring the association between NAcc functional connectivity and peripheral endocannabinoids levels displayed altered NAcc-cerebellum functional connectivity was negatively associated with peripheral 2-AG levels in the AN group (r= -.553; p=.011).

Understanding the interaction between the reward system and peripheral endocannabinoids in patients with AN could contribute to better elucidate the pathophysiology of this disorder. Future studies will need to further investigate the clinical and therapeutic implications of these findings in patients with AN.

Refugees have been shown to be a vulnerable population with increased psychiatric morbidity and lack of access to adequate mental health care. By establishing cooperations between psychosocial centers and psychiatric clinics the state funded project refuKey by NTFN e.V. and DGPPN aims to improve access to and quality of mental health care for traumatized refugees pursuing a stepped-care model.

As part of a larger project evaluation study four focus-groups among experts were conducted to explore the impact of refuKey on refugees’ mental health care.

Data analysis was conducted using Mayring qualitative content analysis as well as an additional quantitative survey with state refugee reception centers’ employees.

The results indicate that refuKey faciliated the access to mental health care for refugees in terms of systematic identification of mental disorders, eased transitions and increased networking between the mental health care institutions and sectors. Planning and implementation of treatment is described as being more coordinated, solution oriented and sustainable due to multiprofessional collaboration and regular use of qualified interpreters. Reduced distress as well as increased transcultural expertise was found for professionals.

The persisting barriers for refugees in access to mental health care, especially to psychotherapeutic treatment and the emotional burden for professionals underlines the need for further support and research. The experts highly endorse the continuance of refuKey. Furthermore, they call for expansion of the project in terms of staff and new sites and changes of health policies to guarantee the access to adequate health care for traumatized refugees.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with numerous health consequences in adulthood including cognitive decline. However, the underlying mechanisms implicated remain unclear.

In this study, depressive symptoms and systemic inflammation were investigated as potential independent mediators of the association between ACEs and cognitive decline.

Participants were adults aged 50+ from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (N = 3,029; 54.8% female). Measures included self-reported ACEs at wave 3 (2006-2007), C-reactive protein (CRP) and depressive symptoms at wave 4 (2008-2009), and cognitive function at waves 3 and 7 (2014-2015). Mediation analyses examined the direct associations between ACEs and cognitive function at wave 7 and the indirect associations via depressive symptoms and CRP at wave 4 and were conducted using ordinary least squares regression models with the SPSS PROCESS macro. In Step 1, models were adjusted for sociodemographic factors and baseline cognitive function. Models in Step 2 were additionally adjusted for obesity and health behaviours (n = 1,874).

Cumulative ACEs exposure was shown to positively predict later-life depressive symptoms, which in turn predicted cognitive decline. ACEs were also shown to positively predict systemic inflammation as measured by CRP. However, CRP did not mediate the association between ACEs and cognitive decline.

These findings suggest that ACEs are related to cognitive decline partly via depressive symptoms and corroborate prior research linking ACEs with adult systemic inflammation. Efforts towards screening for, preventing, and mitigating the effects of ACEs may therefore represent an important avenue for improving health outcomes in later life.

Since the beginning of Coronavirus pandemic, the world is facing huge challenges for the prevention of mass infection. Studies shows that wearing facemasks and hand washing seems to be the best protection from disease transmission. Indeed, the spread of SARS-CoV-2 was efficaciously controlled in countries where mask wearing is respected. However, such recommendations may not be easily established with inpatients with mental disorders due to limited ability to embrace instructions.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of facemasks and hand’s wash among inpatients with mental disorders during coronavirus pandemic in a psychiatric hospital in Tunisia.

This hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from September to October 2021 among thirty hospitalized inpatients in a psychiatric department suffering from schizophrenia. All patients responded to an anonymous questionnaire about mask wearing and washing hands status. Knowledge about COVID-19 was assessed by a 6-item questionnaire inspired from a Corean study.

Preliminary findings showed that most patients are aware of covid-19 pandemic and about barrier gestures but only a very few (less than 20%) wear masks. Inpatients with schizophrenia were in most cases not afraid from covid-19 contamination within the hospital and less that 50% were vaccinated.

During a pandemic, psychiatric departments needs an extra attention because of the high-risk of spreading infections in inpatients with mental diseases. Communication has to be clearer, and repeated assistance by correctly reminding measures has to be implanted above all for patients with schizophrenia.

Measurement-based care (i.e., the systematic use of rating scales to guide clinical decision-making) has shown great promise in the treatment of major depression in clinical trials. Unfortunately, measurement-based care has not yet gained ground in clinical practice, possibly because clinician-rated scales are time-consuming and limited by the availability of trained raters. Hence, brief and valid self-rated scales (questionnaires) may serve as an alternative or supplement to clinician-rated scales. The self-rated 6-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D6-SR) has shown some promise in this regard, but its validity among inpatients remains unclear.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the criterion validity and responsiveness (sensitivity to change) of the HAM-D6-SR among inpatients using the clinician-rated 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D17) as gold standard reference.

Inpatients with depression will complete the HAM-D6-SR twice during admission (at least one week between the two self-ratings). At both occasions, the patients will subsequently be rated on the HAM-D17 by trained raters, who are blind to the HAM-D6-SR ratings. The agreement between the HAM-D6-SR and the HAM-D6 extracted from the HAM-D17 will be evaluated using intra-class correlation.

A total of 100 inpatients will be recruited for the study. Data collection is ongoing, and the results of the study will be presented at the 2022 EPA meeting.

If the agreement between the HAM-D6-SR and the HAM-D6 extracted from the HAM-D17 is satisfactory, the HAM-D6-SR could inform decision-making in the treatment of depression.

With measures of COVID-19, activities that cover a large part of life have started to be carried out via videoconferencing. Videoconferencing can be disadvantageous for individuals with social anxiety due to increased social presence, decreased mutual understanding and consequently causing awkward communication.

This study aims to develop a scale to explore the difficulties experienced by individuals with social anxiety during videoconferencing.

598 children and adolescents between the ages of 11-18 participated in the study. The data were collected with Sociodemographic Information Form, Videoconference Anxiety Scale and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

According to correlation analysis, all correlations between Videoconference Anxiety Scale and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale total score and subscale scores are above 0.50. According to EFA, the scale consisted of 25 items and a single factor. Factor loads were between 0.62 and 0.81, the single factor explained 52.95% of the variance. Model fit indices after CFA were as follows: X2/df:3.360, GFI:.850, IFI:.900, TLI:.890, CFI:.900, RMSEA:.078, SRMR:.0475. Convergent and discriminative validity of the scale was tested. Standardized factor loads of all items were higher than 0.50. AVE value was 0.47, while CR value was 0.96. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 25-item VAS is 0.96.

This study showed that Videoconference Anxiety is a phenomen which is higly correlated with social anxiety and Videoconference Anxiety Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for Turkish children and adolescents.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought with it far-reaching consequences that affect the mental health of a significant population. Those suffering from somatic symptom disorder (SSD) present a significant focus on physical symptoms, with excessive thoughts and behaviours, to an extent that results in major distress and dysfunction. Aggravation of SSD could be associated with various stressors, including the current pandemic, and culminate in an increased severity of the base presentation.

The authors present the case of an elderly man with previous diagnosis of SSD which began to aggravate and evolve into a depressive psychotic state, precipitated by the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The authors conducted a non-systematized literature review with focus on those articles most pertinent to the topic in question as well as presenting a clinical case as compliment.

With the pandemic overwhelming the globe, the literature has demonstrated a significant correlation with aggravation of mental health and psychiatric cases. The patient in question was previously followed in consultation for SSD. With the pandemic acting as precipitating stressor, the patient demonstrated a significant aggravation in his base presentation with the development of psychotic depression. He was subsequently hospitalized with implementation of psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological methods, with remission of the psychotic state, with poor response of the SSD.

External stressors are an important influence on psychiatric disorders. Whenever potential life stressors, especially those that exert influence on a global scale, the psychiatrist should be attentive to the possibility of significant aggravation of a stabilized clinical picture and offer support.
