Amongst the large series of specimens of Meyeria recently obtained by the Sedgwick Museum, Cambridge, from the Lower Greensand of Atherfield, Isle of Wight, two new and strange forms, obviously referable to another genus, were detected by me in looking over the material. Their interest consists not only in belonging to new species but in representing the genus Thenops, of which the best known and only British species, so far described, is Th. scyllariformis, Bell, from the London Clay. There is one imperfect specimen in the British Museum from the Speeton Clay attributed (with a query) to Thenops, but no other British representative from the Cretaceous appears to have been found.

The Globigerina Limestones of the Maltese Islands consist of a series of beds of varying character, the upper portions of which belong to the Lower Langhian, while the lower are referred to the Upper Aquitanian. The formation extends throughout both islands, but in the north-western and western portions it is masked by overlying beds of clays, greensands, and limestones, of Tortonian and of Helvetian age.

Fossil megaspores of the aquatic fern Azolla tegeliensis Florschütz have been recovered from sediments of early Pleistocene age at Great Blakenham, Suffolk, England. This discovery is the first record for this taxon in the British Isles. The find reinforces a recently suggested correlation of the British early Pleistocene sediments with those from con tinental northwest Europe. In the long continuous Pleistocene sequences in The Netherlands the megaspores of A. tegeliensis have been recovered from early Pleistocene sediments, where they are restricted to the Tiglian Stage. Sediments at Great Blakenham can now be correlated with the Tiglian sediments of The Netherlands.

In the Geological Magazine115 (5), 1978, Lane & Thomas proposed the name Rhax for a scutellid of probable late Llandovery from Queensland, Australia.

Among the Plesiosaurian remains recently mounted for exhibition in the Reptile Gallery at the Natural History Museum is a very fine pelvic-girdle belonging to a species of the genus Cryptoclidus (Seeley), and forming part of the same skeleton (Leeds Coll., R. 2616) as the pectoral-girdle recently described and figured by the present writer. These specimens are perhaps the most perfect known, the bones being quite uncrushed, free from matrix, and, except that they are cracked and broken to a slight degree, in much the same condition as if they had been obtained by maceration from a recent reptile. They clearly belonged to an old individual in which ossification had nearly reached its maximum: this is shown (1) by the complete union of the coracoid and scapula with one another in the middle line closing the coraco-scapular foramen; (2) by the sharpness of some of the edges of the bones, e.g. of part of the anterior border of the pubis; (3) by the great solidity of the bones, and by the accuracy with which the pectoral and pelvic elements fit together to form the glenoid and acetabular cavities respectively, showing that the cartilage which separates them in the young animal had been ossified.

During a visit to Crayford in April, under the guidance of my friend Mr. Dawkins, I obtained a worked flint from Slades Green Pit. The discovery seems worth recording, on account of the presumed early age of the deposit in which it occurred. Mr. Evans has kindly looked at the specimen, and considers it decidedly to have been worked, so that there is no room for doubt upon that head. I picked the implement out of a band of rounded flint gravel, lying beneath the sandy stratum which contains abundance of shells, and among them the Corbicula (or Cyrena) fiuminalis and Unio litoralis, together with many mammalian remains.

The orogenic process and crustal growth of the Changning–Menglian Palaeo-Tethys orogenic belt in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau is not fully understood. Triassic Caojian rhyolites and granites occur extensively in this orogenic belt and represent important constraints for this issue. This study aims to examine the relationships between the Triassic Caojian rhyolites and granites and to gain a better understanding of their possible petrogenesis. The study used zircon U–Pb geochronology, trace element analyses and Sr–Nd–Hf isotope data to better understand the relationships and possible origin of the rhyolites and granites. Recent zircon U–Pb ages indicated that the Caojian rhyolites were emplaced at 227.2 Ma, whereas age estimates for Caojian granites were slightly older (233.4–236.9 Ma). The Caojian rhyolites are enriched in large-ion lithophile elements and high-field-strength elements, with elevated FeOtot/MgO and Ga/Al ratios. However, they are significantly depleted in Ba, Sr, Eu, P and Ti. These geochemical characteristics indicate that they have an A-type affinity. Furthermore, the Caojian granites comprise biotite monzogranites and granodiorites and show unfractionated composition. Mineralogically, the Caojian granites were found to contain diagnostic I-type minerals such as hornblende. Geochemical data suggest that the petrogenesis of the Triassic Caojian rhyolites is characterized by rejuvenation of crystal mush represented by the Triassic Caojian granites. The necessary thermal input was supplied by mafic magma. This magmatic evolution was likely related to lithospheric delamination and upwelling of the asthenosphere during the Mid- to Late Triassic, forming post-collisional I-type granites and A-type volcanics in the Changning–Menglian Palaeo-Tethys orogenic belt.

The purpose of the present note is to give a synopsis of the most important differences between assemblages of small foraminifera from rocks of Upper Cretaceous, Eogene, and Neogene age respectively, in the Middle Eastern region.

Vertebrate microremains from the upper Silurian Winnica Formation in the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland are described from the Winnica and Rzepin sections. Both sites record the uppermost part of the Słupianka Member, but represent different depositional environments. The Winnica samples come from a low-energy environment, while the Rzepin sample was taken from a high-energy, oolitic facies. Both sites contain thelodonts Thelodus parvidens, Thelodus trilobatus, an anaspid cf. Liivilepis and a number of acanthodian scales of ‘nostolepid’, poracanthodid and ‘gomphonchid’ types. Notable differences between the sites are the addition of the osteostracan Tahulaspis cf. ordinata, the thelodont Paralogania ludlowiensis and acanthodian scales identified as Nostolepis gracilis in the Rzepin section. Placing the vertebrate faunas within the vertebrate biozonation established for the Silurian proved difficult. The suggested late Ludlow age for the Słupianka Member based on sequence stratigraphical and chemostratigraphical correlations cannot be definitely confirmed or refuted, but a late Ludfordian age seems the most plausible based on invertebrate and vertebrate faunas. The much lower abundance of poracanthodid acanthodians in the Rzepin sample supports the notion of Poracanthodes porosus Zone as a deep-water equivalent to a number of vertebrate biozones. The presence of P. ludlowiensis only in the oolitic sample confirms a long temporal range, but restricted environmental distribution for this taxon.

Any one who compares the terraces that are shaped by rivers and the sea with the terraces that are found in the Yorkshire Dales must see that in the one case the denuding agent has acted alike upon beds of all degrees of hardness, and has shorn off the edges of the rocks to one level, whether the strata were horizontal or inclined; in the other case the denuding agent has acted unequally upon the rocks according to their varying powers of resistance, so that the harder beds were left in relief; and, so far from being all shorn off to one level, it would perhaps be difficult to find any one of the Dale District terraces that is not more or less inclined. The bases of the cliffs formed by the one denuding agent are quite level: those left by the other are often inclined many degrees.

Palaeochannels developed in a terrace of the River Wey are described. Their morphology, relationship with the underlying Folkestone Sands, and the character of associated superficial deposits all suggest that the channels are examples of thermokarst phenomena, probably of Devensian age.

The occurrence of certain genera and species of trilobites which are destitute of eyes has long been known, and so much importance was attached by Dalman to the presence or absence of the visual organs that he instituted two principal divisions of the trilobites based simply on these characters. Goldfuss followed the same lines in his system of classification, though he took into consideration also the structure of the eyes; and Emmrich likewise regarded the possession or lack of these organs to be of taxonomic value. Although in modern schemes of classification more stress is laid on other features of the organization, yet with our increasing knowledge of the ontogeny of various species of trilobites it is perceived that the presence, position, and nature of the eyes are points which must by no means be overlooked.

Two well-preserved Teleostean fishes from the Eocene Limestone of Tura, between Heluan and Cairo, have been submitted to me by Dr. W. F. Hume, Director of the Geological Survey of Egypt. They apparently represent new species, but, like most fishes of Eocene age, they are remarkably modern in type, and one seems to be referable to an existing genus. With them were found remains of two species of Percoid fishes, which are scarcely sufficient for exact determination.

The study was performed in central-northern Anatolia (from Ankara to Amasya) to investigate the relationships of the Sakarya Zone units and the Izmir–Ankara–Erzincan suture (IAES) melange. It reveals that all the Sakarya Zone units are metamorphic and three main tectonostratigraphic units have been distinguished for the first time: the BAA (metasiliciclastic rocks capped by metacarbonates and varicoloured phyllite), the BKC (poly-metamorphic garnet-bearing micaschist and metabasite with a well-preserved relict HP–LT amphibole in a low-amphibolitic to greenschist-facies framework) and the AMC (meta-arkose passing vertically to carbonate–phyllitic alternations and, then, to a thick succession of prevailing acidic to intermediate–basic metavolcanites and volcanic-rich metasediments). The BAA and AMC, whose metamorphic frameworks are of Cimmerian age, underlie the Mesozoic carbonate cover sequences (e.g. t2-3, j3–k1) that often show tectonic detachments and slicing. The piling up of the BAA above the HP–LT BKC can be correlated to the tectonic superposition of two similar units (i.e. the Cimmerian Çangaldağ Complex and the Alpine Middle–Upper Cretaceous Domuzdağ Complex, respectively) defined by previous authors in other sectors of the Central Pontides front. The ophiolitic melange generally underlies the Sakarya Zone, but locally (e.g. SE of Amasya) tectonically rests above the latter, probably owing to back-thrusting that occurred during the Tertiary syn-collisional shortenings and the later strike-slip tectonics. We hypothesize that, also in these areas, the Sakarya Zone–IAES consists of a complex tectonic stack of different units, belonging to different palaeogeographic domains and orogenic events (Cimmerian versus Alpine orogenies), but originated within a single long-lived (since Late Triassic to Paleocene/Eocene times), prograding subduction–accretion system in front of the Laurasian continent.

During the past year I had the pleasure of spending some weeks on the north coast of Cornwall, south of the Camel, examining the rocks exposed in the cliffs and on the foreshores of the various coves, some of which I had not previously visited. A part of my notes were communicated to the Annual Meeting of the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall last November, and with the permission of the Society I propose to reproduce these and additional observations obtained since, with the view more particularly of calling attention to some of the fossils which, though fragmentary, appear to me to yield not unimportant evidence on the stratigraphical horizon of the rocks along certain parts of the coast.

The peculiar features presented by the upper or land-surface portions of some deposits, or rather those portions of certain deposits which are now, or have been in times past, land-surfaces, have engaged the attention of many geologists. Most of those who have studied them are satisfied that some features which they often show are not now being produced in this country, and they are attributed by many observers to the action of different climatic conditions to those which at present exist.
