In some notes communicated to the GeologicalMagazine last April (p. 152), attention was called to the fact that remains of the Glutton had been recently obtained from the “Forest Bed.” So much interest is attached to the discovery of an animal, which at the present day is restricted to the cold northern regions, along with Elephant and other remains, which seem to indicate a warm climate, that it has been thought desirable to give some account of the discovery. I am indebted to Mr. R. Fitch, of Norwich, to whom the specimen belongs, for his courtesy in submitting it to me for examination. It is a portion of a lower jaw with teeth, of a Glutton, Gulo luscus, Linn., a genus which, although known to occur in the fossil state, has hitherto only been obtained from Cave deposits.

Turbidite sandstones interbedded with argillites are cut by veins composed of quartz and ankerite derived from host sandstones during successive phases of deformation.

The existence of the oldest phase of deformation (F1) is established by the presence of its widespread vein system, which is folded by the F2 folds and cut by quartz veins of the later deformation phases.

The nature of the veining, its mode of origin and regional significance are considered.

Specimens of Parabrograptus and Sinograptus from western Canada are described for the first time. An amended diagnosis of Parabrograptus is given. One pyritized fragment of a sinograptid stipe exhibits characters intermediate between Holmograptus and Sinograptus.

The British Museum collection has lately been enriched by two Cephalopods from the Chalk of Lincolnshire that seem to be worthy of notice; one being a new species of Pachydiscus (P. farmeryi), the other being referable to the genus Heteroceras.

As a sequel to my recent paper on new specimens of Dendrerpeton, I have thought it desirable to reproduce by photogravure, for comparison, the type specimen of Hylonomus Lyelli now in the collection of the Geological Society of London. The reproduction (Plate VIII.) is of the natural size, though less distinct than in the original. Though the bones are scattered, this specimen enabled me, by measuring the separate bones and adding the cuticular scales found on other specimens, to restore the animal in my “Airbreathers of the Coal Period.”

Two years ago at the Bath Meeting of the British Association, I had the honour to present a paper in which I compared the principal known Dinosaurs of Europe with those of America. In this communication I referred to some peculiar reptilian remains from the Gosau formation of Austria, and compared them with certain Laramie fossils from America, about which I hoped soon to have more definite information. As an indication of the rapidity with which knowledge of ancient life is advancing, it may be interesting to know what has been learned in two years concerning this single group of the remarkable reptiles known as Dinosauria. This group I have termed the Ceratopsidæ, and I shall refer especially to the forms I have recently investigated, and hope to describe more fully later on, under the auspices of the United States Geological Survey.

Some molluscan and other remains obtained by Miss Forbes and Miss Lowndes from a brick-pit exposure at Okeford Fitzpaine, near Shillingstone station, Dorsetshire, have recently been submitted to me for determination. They comprise two series of specimens indicative of the well-known Cretaceous zones of Acanthoceras mammillatum and Hoplites interruptus. Those from the former or earlier horizon were collected about nine years ago, whereas the others were obtained within the last few weeks. It will be convenient to name the species identified from the Acanthoceras mammillatum zone first, then to describe the beds constituting the whole of the section, and lastly to give a list of the fauna from the Hoplites interruptus zone.

At the conclusion of my last paper on the Cheviot andesites and porphyrites (Geol. Mag. Vol. X. p. 262), I called attention to the close resemblance between the Cheviot hypersthene andesite (or porphyrite) and a rock from Steinerne Mann, Nahe, which has been called a proterobase. Both rocks are black in colour and consist macroscopically of glassy felspars (Mikrolin) imbedded in a groundmass which has a resinous or semi-resinous lustre. Microscopically they consist of two generations of felspar, pyroxene mostly rhombic, magnetite, and a glassy base with various devitrification products.

During the past two years the teaching collection of rocks in the Geological Department of the Imperial College has been underre-arrangement, and in the course of the work the writer has had occasion to consider very carefully the principles on which igneous rocks should be classified. He is aware that in the present state of our knowledge any such classification must be tentative and experimental, and should be judged according to its general convenience, both for teaching purposes and for understanding the various problems that arise from petrological studies. The following article summarizes the conclusions arrived at, and while the writer must be held entirely responsible for all expression of opinion, he wishes to acknowledge his gratitude and indebtedness to Professor Watts and Dr. Evans, both of whom, in numerous discussions, have freely offered suggestions and criticism which have proved to be of the greatest value.

A Careful examination of four fossil millipedes from the Middle Coal-measures of Sparth Bottoms, Rochdale, three preserved in the Manchester Museum and one in Mr. H. Howard's private collection, has revealed some striking features which seem to justify a re-description of the whole material.

An area of high, north-eastward plunge of b-axes has been mapped in Silurian greywackes around the mouth of Strangford Lough, N. Ireland. Reconnaisance over a wider area to the south-west is consistent with the hypothesis that this steep plunge is due to the upward push exerted during the emplacement of the Newry Granodiorite. A near surface extension of the intrusion towards the east-north-east is inferred.

In 1900 Mr. R. Bullen Newton described the casts and impressions of some lamellibranch shells, in blocks of fossiliferous sandstone from Kuala Lipis, Pahang.1 On account of the prevalence of specimens which he assigned to the genus Myophoria, Mr. Newton called the rock “Myophorian Sandstone”. Amongst other species identified by Mr. Newton Chlamys valoniensis has a wide distribution, “and is characteristic of the Ehaetic or uppermost Trias. It is to this horizon, therefore, that the Myophorian Sandstone must be referred”.

The accompanying section shows the succession of beds from the Harlech grits, near the sixth milestone on the road from Dolgelly to Trawsfynydd, across their strike in a south-easterly direction, to the lower ash-bed of the Arenig group at the farm of Blaenau, five miles north-east from Dolgelly. In this section all the beds occur in regular sequence, although they are invaded by many intrusive masses and dykes of diabase; only the larger of which are shown in my section, as it would be impossible, on so small a scale to depict the innumerable protrusions of this rock that occur in the district. The section crosses, at Moel-Cors-y-garnedd, the southern flank of the mountain Rhobell-fawr, which is the largest mass of diabase in Wales. All along the eastern side of Rhobell-fawr the strata are completely inverted, as shown in diagram, so that the Festiniog beds (5 and 6) lie above the more recent Dolgelly beds (7 and 8), from underneath which the Tremadoc beds (9) come up, overlying the beds of slates and ashes belonging to the Arenig Group (10 and 11).

The Wicklow greenstones occur in sheets and dykes intrusive in the Lower Silurian slates (the equivalent of the Bala beds of Wales) that lie to the east of the main chain of the Leinster granite. Like the Welsh greenstones, they are associated with acid lavas (felsites and keratophyres) and felspathie tuffs, although of slightly later origin than these.

In the last two British Association Reports of the Vesuvian Committee, I drew attention to some very large masses of trachyte traversed, at the back of Naples, by the tunnel of the Cumana Railway. A full account of the stratigraphy of these will be deferred until some further excavations, now in progress, are completed. I propose at present merely to describe the earliest-discovered and most striking of these masses.

Potassium–argon dates from hornblende-bearing pyroxene granulites in a large xenolith near the margin of the charnockitic Ernabella Adamellite, central Australia, are interpreted in the light of oxygen isotype studies of associated mineral phases which give a detailed thermal history of the Adamellite and associated rocks.

The only species of Scaphites hitherto identified from the Holaster planus Zone of England is S. geinitzi d’Orbigny, which occurs commonly both in the Chalk Rock and in the normal facies of the zone in many parts of the country.

In answer to the observations made by Professor King in the June number of your valuable Magazine, I am quite ready to admit that several very important points in connection with the shell-structure and interior arrangements of the Spiriferidæ have still to be determinted, and I am always delighted when some new light can be thrown upon the subject.
