Bedding-perpendicular joints striking parallel (longitudinal) and perpendicular (transverse) to both the axis of the hosting anticline and the trend of the foredeep-belt system are widely recognized in fold-and-thrust belts. Their occurrence has been commonly attributed to folding-related processes, such as syn-folding outer-arc extension, although they can also be consistent with a pre-folding foredeep-related fracturing stage. Here we report the pre-folding fracture pattern affecting the Pietrasecca Anticline, in the central Apennines (Italy), resolved by a detailed field structural analysis. Field observations, scan-lines and interpretation of virtual outcrops were used to study the intensity, distribution and the orientations of fracture pattern along the anticline. The fracture pattern of the Pietrasecca Anticline consists of longitudinal and transverse joints, oriented approximately perpendicular to bedding, and of a pre-folding longitudinal pressure-solution cleavage set, which is oblique to bedding regardless of the bedding dip. Cross-cutting relationships show that joints predated the development of the pressure-solution cleavage. Furthermore, joint intensity does not relate to the structural position along the anticline. Taken together, these observations suggest that jointing occurred in a foredeep environment before the Pietrasecca Anticline growth. Our work further demonstrates that joints striking parallel and orthogonal to the main fold axis do not necessarily represent syn-folding deformation structures.

The effects of sea-level changes and anoxia on Devonian trilobites have been studied for a long time, but the importance of palaeogeographic and tectonic events in this key-period is still not well understood. In the Devonian Period, trilobites invaded many different marine environments and areas in North Africa where important palaeogeographic changes occurred. Distribution patterns of trilobites through time and space have been analysed using a hierarchical cluster analysis and diversity indices. Our examination of the literature suggests that trilobites were scarce during Lochkovian time before an important diversification in Pragian time. Trilobites flourished in many North African regions without there being important taxonomic differences between basins, because of free migration in relatively flat palaeo-topography and homogeneous environments. During Middle Devonian time, early Variscan tectonic movements transformed the eastern Anti-Atlas area into a basin with a platform topography. Geographical barriers such as deep basins prevented trilobite migrations. At the beginning of Eifelian time, the reduction in migration between the different regions of this area coincided with a decrease in diversity. Consequently, tectonic events played an important role in the decline of trilobites during Middle Devonian time, especially when these were combined with sea-level changes and anoxic/hypoxic events. A recovery occurred in Famennian time involving only new genera. As at the global scale, cyrtosymbolines developed in shallow seas, whereas phacopids evolved in deeper environments. The basin and platform system still hampered migrations, although sea-level variations led to episodic exchanges. The late Famennian regression reduced trilobite diversity dramatically in the study area.

Central and southern Mexico represents a strategic place to understand the dynamics of Pangaea break-up and its influences on the evolution of the Pacific margin of North America. Lower–Middle Jurassic volcano-sedimentary successions, and scarce magmatic rocks, crop out discontinuously across this region and have been interpreted either as a vestige of a continental arc or as several deposits of syn-rift magmatism. At present, their origin is controversial. Available geochemical data on these igneous rocks suggest that they represent almost pure crustal melts produced in a rift environment rather than in an arc. In fact, the studied rocks exhibit the high silica contents and moderate to strong peraluminous character typical of sediment melts. The enriched isotopic composition (high 86Sr/87Sr and low 143Nd/144Nd) and the age distributions of inherited zircon grains readily identify the widespread Upper Triassic metasedimentary sequences presently exposed in southwestern and central Mexico as the most likely crustal source of these Jurassic igneous rocks. Accordingly, we argue that these Early–Middle Jurassic magmas originated in a syn-rift igneous province associated with extensional-driven crustal attenuation in the context of Pangaea fragmentation. Our findings also constrain post-Pangaea subduction initiation to be younger than Middle Jurassic time in central and southern Mexico.

Ophiolitic mélanges in Anatolia represent Mesozoic subduction-accretion complexes, which are unusually poor in land-derived coarse-clastic rocks. A segment of the ophiolitic mélange in the Beynam region south of Ankara was studied. The ophiolitic mélange consists of three accretionary units (AUs), which are distinguished by lithology, structure, age and geochemistry. At the base there is a serpentinite mélange, which is overlain by a semi-intact Upper Jurassic ophiolite with boninite geochemistry. The topmost AU consists of ocean-island-like alkali basalts with seamount-derived Triassic shallow-marine limestones and Jurassic radiolarian cherts, which are stratigraphically overlain by Upper Cretaceous fore-arc turbidites. The base of the fore-arc sequence is palaeontologically and isotopically dated to the early to middle Campanian (c. 81 Ma). Detrital zircons from the fore-arc sequence indicate a Late Cretaceous (87–81 Ma) magmatic arc as a source. The formation of the subduction-accretion complex was a two-stage process. The first stage took place during the Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous, when supra-subduction type oceanic crust was generated, and subduction accretion was intra-oceanic. In the second stage during the Late Cretaceous the subduction jumped inboard, creating an Andean-type convergent margin, and the Jurassic oceanic crust was incorporated in the subduction-accretion complex. The lack of land-derived sandstones in the ophiolitic mélange can be attributed to the intra-oceanic subduction and to the limestone deposition in the upper plate during the main phase of subduction accretion in the Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous.

With the discovery of high-productivity oilfields in granite buried hills, it is necessary to systematically investigate the types of granite weathered reservoirs at different depths and their spatial distribution. However, previously subdivided reservoirs have been assumed to exhibit the same vertical zoning in different structural parts, contradicting the fact that the degree of weathering varies with the topography. In addition, comprehensive and quantitative methods for classifying reservoir types are lacking. Taking the Binxian Uplift of the Dongying depression in Bohai Bay Basin as an example, we therefore established a comprehensive identification standard for dividing granite reservoirs using lithology division, logging curve statistics, a dual-medium matrix–fracture model and seismic facies identification. Subsequently, by combining logging and seismic methods, the vertical stacking types and distribution properties of weathered granite reservoirs in various structural positions were analysed. The reservoirs were divided vertically into three zones: regolith, dissolution and fracture. Quantitative logging response standards for the different reservoirs were established using acoustic, density, natural gamma and resistivity logging. In terms of the seismic response, the regolith, dissolution and fracture zone corresponded to high-, medium- and low-amplitude seismic facies, respectively. A dynamic double-layer structure of the reservoir was established, comprising a completely weathered layer and a semi-weathered layer. The reservoir division method proposed in this paper can be used in other areas, and the research results can help promote the exploration of granite buried hill reservoirs.

Two fallen blocks of the Marlstone and stratigraphically overlying Junction Bed sampled on the beach below Doghouse Cliff in Dorset, UK (Wessex Basin) have been examined for carbon and oxygen isotopes of bulk carbonate as well as for strontium, carbon and oxygen isotopes and Mg:Ca ratios in the contained belemnites. The sequence, which contains most of the Toarcian zones and subzones within a metre or less of grey to yellow to pink, red and brown fossil-rich nodular limestone, is extremely condensed and lithologically similar to pelagic red limestones of the Tethyan Jurassic that are locally mineralized with Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides (e.g., Rosso Ammonitico). Strontium-isotope ratios of the contained belemnites are compatible with existing reference curves and both blocks show a rise to more radiogenic values post-dating the Pliensbachian–Toarcian boundary. The high degree of correlation between the relatively negative carbon and oxygen isotopes of the bulk carbonate is compatible with significant diagenetic overprint, and contrasts with higher carbon-isotope values in coeval condensed coccolith-rich limestones elsewhere. Evidence for the characteristic signature of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, as represented by organic-rich sediment, is absent, possibly owing to a stratigraphic gap. Both blocks exhibit abrupt carbon-isotope shifts to lower values, one of which could represent the limbs of an incompletely recorded negative excursion associated with the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event. That the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event was also a significant hyperthermal is illustrated in both blocks by a drop in oxygen-isotope values and rise in Mg:Ca ratios of belemnites close to the base of the Junction Bed in the lowest part of the serpentinum zone.

Strike-slip earthquakes near major subduction zones have received less attention than thrust or reverse earthquakes in subduction zone areas. The occurrence of the 2018 Palu Mw 7.5 earthquake in eastern Indonesia provides an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the characteristics of one of these events. The Palu earthquake occurred on the left-lateral, north–south-striking Palu–Koro fault, which is the main plate boundary structure accommodating the convergence between blocks in a triple junction area. It excited a significant tsunami, which unusually is associated with strike-slip earthquakes, and also ruptured at a supershear speed, which is mostly observed on strike-slip faults in continents. Based on our fieldwork, we speculate that the normal slip component of the offshore rupture section in Palu bay on the middle segment probably favours tsunami genesis. Our field investigation has revealed evidence of a simple geometry as well as slip partitioning of dip-slip and strike-slip motion on two subparallel strands on the main segment, both of which may have contributed to the supershear of the rupture propagation. Instead of only a transtensive behaviour of the middle segment, our results also illustrate the transpressional property of the northern and southern rupture segments, which shows more complex behaviour than that of a common continental strike-slip fault.

Early-middle Ediacaran organic-walled microfossils from the Doushantuo Formation studied in several sections in the Yangtze Gorges area, South China, show ornamented cyst-like vesicles of very high diversity. These microfossils are diagenetically permineralized and observed in petrographic thin-sections of chert nodules. Exquisitely preserved specimens belonging to seven species of Appendisphaera, Mengeosphaera, Tanarium, Urasphaera and Tianzhushania contain either single or multiple spheroidal internal bodies inside the vesicles. These structures indicate reproductive stages, endocyst and dividing cells, respectively, and are preserved at early to late ontogenetic stages in the same taxa. This new evidence supports the algal affiliations for the studied taxa and refutes previous suggestions of Tianzhushania being animal embryo or holozoan. The first record of a late developmental stage of a completely preserved specimen of T. spinosa observed in thin-section demonstrates the interior of vesicles with clusters of identical cells but without any cavity that is diagnostic for recognizing algal cysts vs animal diapause cysts. Various lines of evidence to infer biological affinities of these microfossils – morphology, reproductive characters, spatial arrangement of cells, and biochemical properties of the vesicle wall – are collectively characteristic of algal clades. Recognizing the biological affinities of these microfossils is key to understanding whether animals capable of producing such morphologically complex diapause cysts had an early Ediacaran fossil record (633–610 Ma), or the microfossils were non-animal holozoans or algae as argued herein for Tianzhushania spinosa and other studied microfossils.

The appraisal and development of fractured reservoirs are challenging tasks because of the combined variations in reservoir quality and natural fracture distribution. Fracture models are built routinely to support both appraisal and development decisions for such reservoirs. One of the key objectives of these models is to generate three-dimensional (3D) fracture properties for dynamic flow simulations. In this paper, we illustrate the discrepancy between the scale of observation required to build a thorough geological understanding of the subsurface and the simplification imposed by modelling. We use a case study carried out in the context of an exploration campaign of a Cretaceous carbonate reservoir in Egypt. After describing the regional geological setting of the area, we share a series of detailed observations on open-hole logs, cores, thin-sections and borehole images. These observations are focused on reservoir architecture, fracture typology and fracture connectivity. Observations are then integrated with the regional geological context to build a conceptual fracture model and to characterize the uncertainty affecting the essential parameters of this model. The conceptual model, combined with 3D seismic data, is used to define a fracture modelling strategy. This strategy includes a drastic simplification of the conceptual model to generate 3D discrete fracture network scenarios that are calibrated using pressure communication data from the exploration wells. Another extreme simplification is then necessary to populate 3D simulation grids. In the case study presented, the key tuning parameters to obtain a dynamic match are the grid cell orientation and the width of the modelled fault damage zone.

Widely distributed Mid-Neoproterozoic mafic rocks of the Qilian – Qaidam – East Kunlun region record the tectonic evolution of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. This study presents whole-rock geochemistry, zircon U–Pb geochronology and Hf isotopes for the Xialanuoer gabbros of the central South Qilian Belt (SQB). Zircon laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U–Pb dating indicates that the gabbros were emplaced at ca. 738 Ma, indicating they are contemporaneous with mafic magmatism elsewhere in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The gabbros have low SiO2, Cr and Ni contents and Mg# values, are relatively enriched in light rare-earth elements (LREEs) and depleted in high-field-strength elements (HFSEs; e.g. Nb and Ta), have no positive Zr or Hf anomalies and have relatively high Nb/Ta but low Nb/La ratios. These data indicate that the Xialanuoer gabbros formed from calc-alkaline basaltic magmas that were originally generated by the partial melting of an enriched mantle of type-I (EMI-type) enriched region of the lithospheric mantle, underwent little to no crustal contamination prior to their emplacement, and have within-plate basalt geochemical affinities. Combining these data with the presence of widespread contemporaneous continental rift-related magmatism and sedimentation in the North Qilian, Central Qilian, South Qilian, Quanji, North Qaidam and East Kunlun regions suggests that the northeastern Tibetan Plateau underwent Mid-Neoproterozoic continental rifting, which also affected other Rodinian blocks (e.g. Tarim, South China, Australia, North America and Southern Africa).

The Linhe Depression is the largest tectonic unit in the Hetao Basin. The recently discovered commercial oil flow in the structural trap of wells JH2X and S5 has proved that the Meso-Cenozoic strata in the Linhe Depression have great exploration potential. Research on the kinematic model for the Mesozoic–Cenozoic Linhe Depression is important for analysing the geological conditions of hydrocarbon accumulation. In this study, field observations, seismic interpretation and scaled analogue modelling are performed. The results prove that the Linhe Depression experienced different stages of tectonic evolution, such as compressional depression (K1l), conversion from contraction to uniform subsidence (K1g), extensional rifting (E2–N2) and strike-slip deformation (Q), during the Mesozoic–Cenozoic eras. The kinematic model of negative inverted basins was first established with the early differential compression superimposed by the late extension. The seismic interpretation and analogue modelling results show that Jilantai Sag in the southern part of the Linhe Depression was subjected to compression from the Bayanwulashan fold–thrust belt on the NW side and the Helanshan fold–thrust belt on the SE side during Early Cretaceous time. Meanwhile, the Hanghou Sag in the northern part of the Linhe Depression was only compressed by the Langshan fold–thrust belt from the NW direction. The rifted structure generated by the extension from the SE direction during the Cenozoic Era resulted in the negative inversion of the pre-existing thrusts in different patterns. The intensity of negative inversion is controlled by several key factors, such as dip angle and the patterns of thrust faults, along with different basement textures. The morphological changes in the forebulge zone developed during Early Cretaceous time are responsible for the development of the segmented Central fault zones in the Hanghou Sag.

Detailed structural investigations across the Achankovil terrane boundary shear zone (AKSZ) system show distinct differences in the geometry of superposed fold structures between the Trivandrum (TB) and Southern Madurai (SMB) blocks separated by the AKSZ. The metamorphic temperatures and pressures estimated from the SMB and TB have a similar range, that is, 600–880°C and 5–8 kbar. The similar clockwise P-T paths retrieved by phase equilibrium modelling from both the blocks represent the last deformation and metamorphism shared between them during their accretion along the AKSZ. The distinct evolutionary history of the SMB and TB prior to their amalgamation is supported by the contrasting structural, metamorphic and chronological patterns, particularly the lack of prominent middle Neoproterozoic ages and the presence of Palaeoproterozoic ages in the TB, and vice versa in the SMB. The prominent 600–500 Ma monazite ages in the TB, SMB and AKSZ attest to their timing of accretion along the AKSZ. The study corroborates the S-directed subduction model proposed for terrane accretion along the AKSZ, and provides further insight into the subduction–accretion–collision tectonics associated with the late Neoproterozoic – Cambrian evolutionary history of this region.

The tectonothermal histories and geochronology of the SMB and TB are compared to the once adjoined crustal domains of Madagascar within Gondwanaland. It is suggested that the TB is equivalent to the Androyan and Anosyan domains of southern Madagascar, the SMB is equivalent to the Antananarivo and Itremo–Ikalamavony blocks of the central Madagascar, and the sinistral AKSZ is contiguous with the Ranotsara Shear Zone in southern Madagascar.

We describe an extraordinarily preserved non-trilobite artiopod Bailongia longicaudata gen. et sp. nov. from the Cambrian Stage 4 Guanshan Biota in Yiliang, Kunming of the Yunnan Province in China. Its exoskeleton consists of a large semi-elliptical cephalon with paired lateral posterior eyes, nine tapering homonomous tergites and a long slender tailspine. Appendages include paired small antennae, at least three pairs of post-antennal cephalic limbs, and trunk biramous limbs consisting of an endopod and an exopod with lamellae. B. longicaudata does not conform to any taxon within Artiopoda, although the eyes invite comparisons with Xandarella spectaculum, Sinoburius lunaris and Phytophilaspis. Parsimony analyses indicate Bailongia is a member of Artiopoda and cannot be readily accommodated within any of the major artiopod clades.

Generally all orogenic ultrapotassic rocks are formed after melting of metasomatized sub-continental lithospheric mantle via subducted crustal mica-bearing lithologies. Here we present another possible model, based on the study of the small Stomanovo ultrapotassic monzonite porphyry intrusion in the Central Rhodope Massif, Bulgaria. The monzonite dated at 30.50 ± 0.46 Ma is intruded into the voluminous Oligocene (31.63 ± 0.40 Ma) Bratsigovo–Dospat ignimbrite. The monzonite hosts both normally and reversely zoned clinopyroxene phenocrysts. The normally zoned clinopyroxene is characterized by gradually diminishing core-to-rim Mg no. (89–74), whereas the reversely zoned clinopyroxene has green Fe-rich cores (Mg no. 71–55) mantled by normally zoned clinopyroxene (Mg no. 87–74). Neither the core of the normally zoned clinopyroxene nor the Fe-rich green cores are in equilibrium with the host monzonite. This ultrapotassic monzonite shows more radiogenic Sr isotopes ((87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.71066) and ϵNd(t) = −7.8 to −8.0 that are distinct from the host ignimbrites with (87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70917–0.70927 and ϵNd(t) = −4.6 to −6.5. The Sr–Nd isotopic data and the presence of copious zircon xenocrysts from the underlying metamorphic basement suggest extensive crustal assimilation. Our observations indicate that the Stomanovo ultrapotassic monzonite formed after extensive lower or middle crustal fractional crystallization from an evolved magma producing cumulates. The process was followed by hybridization with primitive mantle-derived magma and subsequent continuous crustal contamination. We suggest that instead of inheriting their high K2O and large-ion lithophile element enrichments from slab-derived/metasomatic fluids, the Stomanovo ultrapotassic monzonite may owe some of its unusually high alkalinity to the assimilation of potassium-rich phases from the Rhodope Massif basement rocks.

Time-distinctive features within carbonate rocks, specifically the presence, abundance and distribution of stromatolites, molar-tooth fabric and specific morphologies of marine cement, have been identified as potential indicators of global-scale changes in the chemistry of marine environments. Recently, Cantine et al. (2019) introduced a database approach seeking to quantify spatial and temporal patterns in these carbonate features through the Precambrian. Despite the coarse temporal scale, results support earlier inferences of temporal change in carbonate sedimentation. Here, we use original field notes to dissect late Mesoproterozoic (˜1.3 to 1.0 Ga) carbonate strata at a high resolution, analyse time-distinctive carbonate fabrics within a database context and compare sedimentological patterns within this narrow time range to observations of the Proterozoic as a whole. Late Mesoproterozoic strata contain a variety of features (e.g. stromatolites, seafloor precipitates, herringbone carbonate, molar-tooth carbonate), often in close spatial and temporal proximity, that are commonly considered to be temporally restricted during the Precambrian. The spatial distribution of such features within Mesoproterozoic basins demonstrates the importance of recognizing even rare occurrences of time-distinctive facies and permits inference of environmental drivers that may have interacted to affect carbonate precipitation. Such spatial variability reflects a subtle division of Mesoproterozoic carbonate platform environments driven by globally high sea level, elevated carbonate saturation and a low-oxygen water column. The heterogeneous, mosaic nature of environments appears to be a hallmark of Mesoproterozoic carbonate sedimentation and emphasizes the importance of these basins in understanding longer-term trends in carbonate deposition.

Temporal constraints on the closure of the eastern segment of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean along the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) remain unclear. As a part of the NCC, the sedimentation and tectonic evolution of the Late Palaeozoic Ordos Basin were closely related to the opening and closing of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean. We use petrology, quantitative mineralogical analysis, U–Pb geochronology and trace element signatures of detrital zircons of the Lower Shihezi Formation from two sections in the eastern north Ordos Basin and two sections in the western north Ordos Basin to reconstruct the sedimentary provenance and tectonic background of the northern Ordos Basin. The results show that the sediments of the western sections were mainly derived from the Yinshan orogenic belt and Alxa block, and that those in the eastern sections only came from the Yinshan orogenic belt. The trace element ratios in detrital zircons from the Late Palaeozoic sandstones indicate that the source areas were mainly subduction-related continental arcs, closely related to the continued subduction of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean in the Late Palaeozoic. Since the main Late Palaeozoic magmatic periods vary on the east and west sides of the northern margin of the Ordos Basin, two main collisions related to Palaeo-Asian Ocean closure are recorded. The collision on the west side occurred significantly earlier than that in the east. This study implies that the Palaeo-Asian Ocean began to subduct beneath the NCC in the Carboniferous and gradually closed from west to east thereafter.

New occurrences of flask-shaped and envelope-bearing microfossils, including the predominantly Cambrian taxon Granomarginata, are reported from new localities, as well as from earlier in time (Ediacaran) than previously known. The stratigraphic range of Granomarginata extends into the Cambrian System, where it had a cosmopolitan distribution. This newly reported Ediacaran record includes areas from Norway (Baltica), Newfoundland (Avalonia) and Namibia (adjacent to the Kalahari Craton), and puts the oldest global occurrence of Granomarginata in the Indreelva Member (< 563 Ma) of the Stáhpogieddi Formation on the Digermulen Peninsula, Arctic Norway. Although Granomarginata is rare within the assemblage, these new occurrences together with previously reported occurrences from India and Poland, suggest a potentially widespread palaeogeographic distribution of Granomarginata through the middle–late Ediacaran interval. A new flask-shaped microfossil Lagoenaforma collaris gen. et sp. nov. is also reported in horizons containing Granomarginata from the Stáhpogieddi Formation in Norway and the Dabis Formation in Namibia, and flask-shaped fossils are also found in the Gibbett Hill Formation in Newfoundland. The Granomarginata–Lagoenaforma association, in addition to a low-diversity organic-walled microfossil assemblage, occurs in the strata postdating the Shuram carbon isotope excursion, and may eventually be of use in terminal Ediacaran biostratigraphy. These older occurrences of Granomarginata add to a growing record of body fossil taxa spanning the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary.

Quantitative Miocene climate and vegetation data from the Siwalik succession of western Nepal indicate that the development of the Indian summer monsoon has had an impact, though in part, on vegetation changes. The climate and vegetation of the Lower (middle Miocene) and Middle (late Miocene–Pliocene) Siwalik successions of Darjeeling, eastern Himalaya, have been quantified. Reconstructed climate data, using the Coexistence Approach, suggest a decrease in winter temperatures and precipitation during the wettest months (MPwet) from the Lower to Middle Siwalik. The floristic assemblage suggests that Lower Siwalik forests were dominated by wet evergreen taxa, whereas deciduous ones became more dominant during the Middle Siwalik. The vegetation shift in the eastern Himalayan Siwalik was most likely due to a decrease in MPwet. The quantified climate–vegetation data from the eastern and western Himalayan Siwalik indicate that changes in the Indian summer monsoon had a profound impact on vegetation development during the period of deposition. We suggest that the decrease in winter temperature and summer monsoon rainfall during the Middle Siwalik might be linked with the Northern Hemisphere glaciation/cooling or a number of other things that were also going on at the time, including the continued rise of the Himalaya, and drying across the Tibetan region, which may have affected atmospheric circulation regionally.

The Niagara Escarpment is a geological feature located in southern Ontario, Canada, and the northeastern United States, comprising highly fractured sandstone, shale and carbonates deposited during the Ordovician and Silurian periods. Differential erosion of the strata has generated a steep cliff face which bisects the city of Hamilton, Ontario. Geological fractures are widespread in the escarpment and result in the formation of unstable blocks of rock subject to erosion through rockfall. This presents structural stability issues of concern due to the proximity of the escarpment to urban infrastructure. We quantify and analyse fracture networks in the escarpment using a combined field- and numerical-modelling-based approach. The location, orientation and aperture of fractures were documented from local outcrops using scanline and area survey methods. Clusters of poles describing the orientation of geological discontinuities were identified in spherical projections, defining three sets: (1) a sub-vertical stratabound set striking N–S, (2) a sub-vertical stratabound set striking E–W, and (3) a set parallel to horizontal sedimentary bedding planes which we infer controlled sub-vertical fracture geometry. Discrete fracture network modelling of fracture sets highlights their high degree of connectivity, and contribution to local geohazards, and quantifies their role in controlling fluid flow through escarpment strata, which is dependent on fracture aperture. Additionally, bedding planes have the potential to act as free surfaces, facilitating stress conditions in which approximately cuboid blocks are produced, and increasing the risk of rockfalls. We conclude that fractures present a first-order control on the fluid-flow properties and stability of the Niagara Escarpment.

We report a new zircon U–Pb age of 1257 ± 6 Ma for the Punugodu granite (PG) pluton in the Eastern Dharwar Craton (EDC), Southern India. The Mesoproterozoic PG is alkali feldspar hypersolvus granite emplaced at shallow crustal level, as evident from the presence of rhyodacite xenoliths and hornfelsic texture developed in the metavolcanic country rocks of the Neoarchaean Nellore Schist Belt (NSB). Geochemically, the PG is metaluminous, ferroan and alkali-calcic, and is characterized by high SiO2 and Na2O + K2O, Ga/Al ratios >2.6, high-field-strength elements and rare earth element (REE) contents with low CaO, MgO and Sr, indicating its similarity to anorogenic, alkali (A-type) granite. The highly fractionated REE patterns with negative europium anomalies of PG reflect its evolved nature and feldspar fractionation. Mafic (MME) to hybrid (HME) microgranular enclaves represent distinct batches of mantle-derived magmas that interacted, mingled and undercooled within the partly crystalline PG host magma. Felsic microgranular enclaves (FME) having similar mineralogical and geochemical characteristics to the host PG most likely represent fragments of marginal rock facies of the PG pluton. The PG appears to be formed from an oceanic island basalt (OIB)-like source in an anorogenic, within-plate setting. The emplacement of PG (c. 1257 Ma) in the vicinity of Mesoproterozoic Kanigiri Ophiolite (c. 1334 Ma) shows an age gap of nearly 77 Ma, which probably suggests PG emplacement in an extensional environment along a terrain boundary at the western margin of the Neoarchaean NSB in the EDC.
