In this paper we study some questions proposed by B. Schein [8] regarding the semigroup of binary relations Bx for a finite set X: what is the ideal structure of Bx, what are the congruences on Bx, what are the endomorphisms of Bx? For |X| = nit is convenient to regard Bx as the semigroup Bn of n×n (0, l)-matrices under Boolean matrix multiplication.

Let f(x) be an irreducible polynomial of degree n with coefficients in a field L and r be an integer prime to the characteristic of L. The object of this paper is to describe the galois group g of f(xr) over L when the galois group G of f(x) itself over L is either the full symmetric group Snor the alternating group An. We shall call f standard if G = Sn or An with |G|>2.

In his unpublished manuscripts (referred to by Birch [1] as Fragment V, pp. 247–249), Ramanujan [3] gave a whole list of assertions about various (transforms of) modular forms possessing naturally associated Euler products, in more or less the spirit of his extremely beautiful paper entitled “On certain arithmetical functions” (in Trans. Camb. Phil. Soc. 22 (1916)). It is simply amazing how Ramanujan could write down (with an ostensibly profound insight) a basis of eigenfunctions (of Hecke operators) whose associated Dirichlet series have Euler products, anticipating by two decades the famous work of Hecke and Petersson. That he had further realized, in the event of a modular form f not corresponding to an Euler product, the possibility of restoring the Euler product property to a suitable linear combination of modular forms of the same type as f, is evidently fantastic.

This note extends the concept of the inner automorphism, but here applies only to those finite groups G for which some member of the lower central series is Abelian. In general (e.g. when G is metabelian) the construction yields an endomorphism semigroup, but in the special case where Gis nilpotent (and may therefore, for our present purposes, be considered as a p-group) a group of automorphisms results.

The formula to be proved is

In a sequence of two papers which appeared in 1968 and 1969 Herbert Abels [1, 2] has developed, from a method originated by Gerstenhaber [6], a means for extending the study of properly discontinuous groups of transformations to that of proper transformation groups in general. We recall that, if G is a Hausdorff locally compact group of transformations of a locally compact space X, then the action of Gis proper when, for any two compact subsets K and L, the subset G(K, L) = {g ɛ G: gL∩K # 0} of G is compact (see [3], p. 55). In what follows all groups and spaces will be Hausdorff and locally compact. If H is a closed subgroup of G, then it is clear that the property just defined is possessed by the action of H as a group of left translations of G.

Let X be a finite connected poset and K a field. We study the question, when all Lie automorphisms of the incidence algebra I(X, K) are proper. Without any restriction on the length of X, we find only a sufficient condition involving certain equivalence relation on the set of maximal chains of X. For some classes of posets of length one, such as finite connected crownless posets (i.e., without weak crown subposets), crowns, and ordinal sums of two anti-chains, we give a complete answer.

Given a Banach space X and a real number α ≥ 1, we write: (1) D(X) ≤ α if, for any locally finite metric space A, all finite subsets of which admit bilipschitz embeddings into X with distortions ≤ C, the space A itself admits a bilipschitz embedding into X with distortion ≤ α ⋅ C; (2) D(X) = α+ if, for every ϵ > 0, the condition D(X) ≤ α + ϵ holds, while D(X) ≤ α does not; (3) D(X) ≤ α+ if D(X) = α+ or D(X) ≤ α. It is known that D(X) is bounded by a universal constant, but the available estimates for this constant are rather large. The following results have been proved in this work: (1) D((⊕n=1∞Xn)p) ≤ 1+ for every nested family of finite-dimensional Banach spaces {Xn}n=1∞ and every 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞. (2) D((⊕n=1∞ ℓ∞n)p) = 1+ for 1 < p < ∞. (3) D(X) ≤ 4+ for every Banach space X with no nontrivial cotype. Statement (3) is a strengthening of the Baudier–Lancien result (2008).

The fractional part of the sequence {αnk}, where α is an irrational real number and k is an integer, was first studied early this century, initiated by the work of Hardy, Littlewood and Weyl. It seems very natural to consider the subsequence {αpk}, where p denotes a prime variable. The pioneering work in this direction was conducted by Vinogradov [13,14]. Improvements have since been made by Vaughan [12], Ghosh [4], Harman [6,7,8] and Jia [11]. The best results to date have been obtained by Harman for k = 1 [9], by Baker and Harman for 2 ≤ k ≤ 12 [1], and by Harman for larger k [8]. In the following work, we shall adopt a sieve technique developed by Harman in [6] to show the following.

A series ∑an is said to be summable (C, — 1) to s if it converges to s and nan = o(1) [8]. It is well known that this definition is equivalent to tn→s (n→∞), where tn = sn + nan, sn = ao + … + an. The series is summable | C, — 1 | to s if the sequence t = {tn} is of bounded variation (t ∈ B.V.), i.e. ∑ |; ▲tn |; = ∑ | tn - tn-1 | < ∞, and ∑ ▲tn = lim tn = s. An equivalent condition is ∑ | an |; < ∞, ∑an = s and ∑ | ▲(nan) | < ∞. For, suppose that ∑an = s | C, - 1 |. Since {sn} is the sequence of (C, 1)-means of {tn} and since | C, 0 | ⊂ | C, 1 |, we have ∑ | an | < ∞ and ∑an = s whence ∑ | ▲(nan) | < ∞. Conversely, ∑ | an | < ∞, ∑an = s and ∑ | ▲(nan) | < ∞ imply t ∈ B.V. and ∑▲n = s + lim nan. But lim nan = 0, since ∑ | an | < ∞.

If we investigate symmetry of an infra-nilmanifold M, the outer automorphism group of its fundamental group (an almost-Bieberbach group) is known to be a crucial object. In this paper, we characterise algebraically almost-Bieberbach groups E with finite outer automorphism group Out(E). Inspired by the description of Anosov diffeomorphisms on M, we also present an interesting class of infinite order outer automorphisms. Another possible type of infinite order outer automorphisms arises when comparing Out(E) with the outer automorphism group of the underlying crystallographic group of E.

Let B(H) denote the algebra of operators (i.e., bounded linear transformations) on the Hilbert space H. A ∈ B (H) is said to be p-hyponormal (0<p<l), if (AA*)γ < (A*A)p. (Of course, a l-hyponormal operator is hyponormal.) The p-hyponormal property is monotonic decreasing in p and a p-hyponormal operator is q-hyponormal operator for all 0<q <p. Let A have the polar decomposition A = U |A|, where U is a partial isometry and |A| denotes the (unique) positive square root of A*A.If A has equal defect and nullity, then the partial isometry U may be taken to be unitary. Let ℋU(p) denote the class of p -hyponormal operators for which U in A = U |A| is unitary. ℋU(l/2) operators were introduced by Xia and ℋU(p) operators for a general 0<p<1 were first considered by Aluthge (see [1,14]); ℋU(p) operators have since been considered by a number of authors (see [3, 4, 5, 9, 10] and the references cited in these papers). Generally speaking, ℋU(p) operators have spectral properties similar to those of hyponormal operators. Very recently, in [11], J. R. L. Webb and S. C. Welsh obtained the following existence result.

Let X be a non-locally convex F-space (complete metric linear space) whose dual X′ separates the points of X. Then it is known that X possesses a closed subspace N which fails to be weakly closed (see [3]), or, equivalently, such that the quotient space X/N does not have a point separating dual. However the question has also been raised by Duren, Romberg and Shields [2] of whether X possesses a proper closed weakly dense (PCWD) subspace N, or, equivalently a closed subspace N such that X/N has trivial dual. In [2], the space Hp (0<p<1) was shown to have a PCWD subspace; later in [9], Shapiro showed that ℓp (0<p<1) and certain spaces of analytic function have PCWD subspaces. Our first result in this note is that every separable non-locally convex F-space with separating dual has a PCWD subspace.

A basis , for a Banach space X is said to be boundedly complete [4, p. 284] if whenever is a sequence of scalars for which converges. It is well-known [2, p. 70] that if is a boundedly complete basis for X then X is isometric to a conjugate space; in fact, X = [fi]*, where is the sequence of coefficient functionals associated with the basis It follows that no basis for C[0,1] can be boundedly complete since no separable conjugate space contains C0[l], yet C[0,1] is a separable space which contains c0.

Consider the following hyperlogistic equation

We prove that, for non purely atomic measures, Lp (μ, X) is a Grothendieck space if and only if X is reflexive.

Dr V. O. Ennola has pointed out that there is a mistake in this paper. The inequality for dox at the foot of page 76 does not imply the stated inequality between the second and third lines on page 77. This error vitiates the entire argument, and I have not so far been able to put it right.

Let G be a finite group with neutral element e which operates trivially on the multiplicative group R* of a commutative ring with identity 1. Let H2(G, R*) = Z2(G, R*)/B2(G, R*) denote the second cohomology group of G with respect to the trivial G-module R*. With every factor system (2-cocycle) f ∈ Z2(G, R*) we associate the so called (central) twisted group algebra (R, G, f) of G over R (see [4, Chapter V, 23.7] or [13, §4] for a definition). If f is cohomologous to f', then the R-algebras (R, G, f) and (R, G, f′) are isomorphic. Hence, up to R-algebra isomorphism, (R, G, f) is determined by the cohomology class f∈H2(G, R*) determined by f. If R = k is a field of characteristic not dividing the order |G| of G, then a computation of the discriminant of (k, G, f) shows that (k, G, f) is semisimple (see [13, 4.2]).
