We give a method for embedding a large family of partially ordered simple groups of rank one into simple Riesz groups of rank one. In particular, we answer in the affirmative a question of Wehrung, by constructing a torsion-free, simple Riesz group G of rank one containing an interval D\varsubsetneqq G^+ such that 2D=G^+. We sketch some potential applications of this result in the context of monoids of intervals and K-Theory of rings.

Let K be a global field, $\mathcal{V}$ a proper subset of the set of all primes of K, $\mathcal{S}$ a finite subset of $\mathcal{V}$, and ${\tilde K}$ (resp. Ksep) a fixed algebraic (resp. separable algebraic) closure of K with $K_\mathrm{sep}\{\subseteq}{\tilde K}$. Let Gal(K) = Gal(Ksep/K) be the absolute Galois group of K. For each $\mathfrak{p}\in\mathcal{V}$, we choose a Henselian (respectively, a real or algebraic) closure $K_\mathfrak{p}$ of K at $\mathfrak{p}$ in ${\tilde K}$ if $\mathfrak{p}$ is non-archimedean (respectively, archimedean). Then, $K_{\mathrm{tot},\mathcal{S}}=\bigcap_{\mathfrak{p}\in\mathcal{S}}\bigcap_{\tau\in{\rm Gal}(K)}K_\mathfrak{p}^\tau$ is the maximal Galois extension of K in Ksep in which each $\mathfrak{p}\in\mathcal{S}$ totally splits. For each $\mathfrak{p}\in\mathcal{V}$, we choose a $\mathfrak{p}$-adic absolute value $|~|_\mathfrak{p}$ of $K_\mathfrak{p}$ and extend it in the unique possible way to ${\tilde K}$. Finally, we denote the compositum of all symmetric extensions of K by Ksymm. We consider an affine absolutely integral variety V in $\mathbb{A}_K^n$. Suppose that for each $\mathfrak{p}\in\mathcal{S}$ there exists a simple $K_\mathfrak{p}$-rational point $\mathbf{z}_\mathfrak{p}$ of V and for each $\mathfrak{p}\in\mathcal{V}\smallsetminus\mathcal{S}$ there exists $\mathbf{z}_\mathfrak{p}\in V({\tilde K})$ such that in both cases $|\mathbf{z}_\mathfrak{p}|_\mathfrak{p}\le1$ if $\mathfrak{p}$ is non-archimedean and $|\mathbf{z}_\mathfrak{p}|_\mathfrak{p}<1$ if $\mathfrak{p}$ is archimedean. Then, there exists $\mathbf{z}\in V(K_{\mathrm{tot},\mathcal{S}}\cap K_\mathrm{symm})$ such that for all $\mathfrak{p}\in\mathcal{V}$ and for all τ ∈ Gal(K), we have $|\mathbf{z}^\tau|_\mathfrak{p}\le1$ if $\mathfrak{p}$ is archimedean and $|\mathbf{z}^\tau|_\mathfrak{p}<1$ if $\mathfrak{p}$ is non-archimedean. For $\mathcal{S}=\emptyset$, we get as a corollary that the ring of integers of Ksymm is Hilbertian and Bezout.

In this paper, we obtain algebraic equations for all genus 2 compact Riemann surfaces that admit a semi-regular (or uniform) covering of the Riemann sphere with more than two lifting symmetries. By a lifting symmetry, we mean an automorphism of the target surface which can be lifted to the covering. We restrict ourselves to the genus 2 surfaces in order to make computations easier and to make possible to find their algebraic equations as well. At the same time, the main ingredient (Main Proposition) depends neither on the genus, nor on the order of the group of lifting symmetries. Because of this, the paper can be thought as a generalisation for the non-normal case to the question of lifting automorphisms of a compact Riemann surface to a normal covering, treated, for instance, by E. Bujalance and M. Conder in a joint paper, or by P. Turbek solely.

Let k be a divisor of a finite group G and Lk(G) = {x ∈ G | xk =1}. Frobenius proved that the number |Lk(G)| is always divisible by k. The following inverse problem is considered: for a given integer n, find all groups G such that max{k-1|Lk(G)| | k ∈ Div(G)} = n, where Div(G) denotes the set of all divisors of |G|. A procedure beginning with (in a sense) minimal members and deducing the remaining ones is outlined and executed for n=8.

We prove that every ergodic amenable action of an algebraic group over a local field of characteristic zero is induced from an ergodic action of an amenable subgroup.

In this paper we investigate the following functional inequality

Given a finite subgroup G⊂GL(2,ℂ), it is known that the minimal resolution of singularity ℂ2/G is the moduli space Y=G-Hilb(ℂ2) of G-clusters ⊂ℂ2. The explicit description of Y can be obtained by calculating every possible distinguished basis for as vector spaces. These basis are the so-called G-graphs. In this paper we classify G-graphs for any small binary dihedral subgroup G in GL(2,ℂ), and in the context of the special McKay correspondence we use this classification to give a combinatorial description of special representations of G appearing in Y in terms of its maximal normal cyclic subgroup H ⊴ G.

Let θ be a real number greater than 1, and let (()) be the fractional part function. Then, θ is said to be a Z-number if there is a non-zero real number λ such that ((λθn)) < for all n ∈ ℕ. Dubickas (A. Dubickas, Even and odd integral parts of powers of a real number, Glasg. Math. J., 48 (2006), 331–336) showed that strong Pisot numbers are Z-numbers. Here it is proved that θ is a strong Pisot number if and only if there exists λ ≠ 0 such that ((λα)) < for all. Also, the following characterisation of Pisot numbers among real numbers greater than 1 is shown: θ is a Pisot number ⇔ ∃ λ ≠ 0 such thatfor allan ∈ {0,1}, N ∈ ℕ}, where ‖λα‖ = min{((λα)), 1 − ((λα))}.

It is proved that every non-trivial Latin square has an upper embedding in a non-orientable surface and every Latin square of odd order has an upper embedding in an orientable surface. In the latter case, detailed results about the possible automorphisms and their actions are also obtained.

We show that if S is the maximal ideal space of certain ultrapowers of C_0(L) spaces then: C_0(S, [Copf ]) allows polar decompositions while C_0(S, ℝ) does not, which answers a question of Greim and Rajalopagan [4]. Also, S is almost homogeneous but not transitive, which answers a question of Wood [9].

In this paper, we consider several homological dimensions of crossed products AασG, where A is a left Noetherian ring and G is a finite group. We revisit the induction and restriction functors in derived categories, generalizing a few classical results for separable extensions. The global dimension and finitistic dimension of AσαG are classified: global dimension of AσαG is either infinity or equal to that of A, and finitistic dimension of AσαG coincides with that of A. A criterion for skew group rings to have finite global dimensions is deduced. Under the hypothesis that A is a semiprimary algebra containing a complete set of primitive orthogonal idempotents closed under the action of a Sylow p-subgroup S ≤ G, we show that A and AασG share the same homological dimensions under extra assumptions, extending the main results in (Li, Representations of modular skew group algebras, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.367(9) (2015), 6293–6314, Li, Finitistic dimensions and picewise hereditary property of skew group algebras, to Glasgow Math. J.57(3) (2015), 509–517).

We give a bound on the H-constants of configurations of smooth curves having transversal intersection points only on an algebraic surface of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We also study in detail configurations of lines on smooth complete intersections $X \subset \mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{n + 2}$ of multi-degree d = (d1, …, dn), and we provide a sharp and uniform bound on their H-constants, which only depends on d.

Let $\mu$ be a finite positive Borel measure defined on a $\sigma$-algebra of subsets of a set $\X$. Using operator techniques we provide several criteria for finitely generated algebras to be dense in the space $L^2(\mu)$.

We strengthen a characterization of the $p$-adic binomial series and a special case of a formal analogue of Hilbert's Theorem 90 for $p$-adic power series.

We say a group G satisfies properties (M) and (NM) if every nontrivial finite subgroup of G is contained in a unique maximal finite subgroup, and every nontrivial finite maximal subgroup is self-normalizing. We prove that the Bredon cohomological dimension and the virtual cohomological dimension coincide for groups that admit a cocompact model for EG and satisfy properties (M) and (NM). Among the examples of groups satisfying these hypothesis are cocompact and arithmetic Fuchsian groups, one-relator groups, the Hilbert modular group, and 3-manifold groups.

This paper considers the long-time behavior of solutions for the Cauchy problem of a class of second-order nonlinear differential equations: -x''+ f(t,x,x')x'+g(x)=h(t). Under appropriate conditions it is shown that the solutions of the problem possess some dichotomy properties.

In the course of classifying those finite groups F which have exactly five maximal subgroups, R. W. van der Waall [4] proved that one encounters the following situation. One class of such groups F is described by F = SP, where S = O2(F)∈Syl2(F), P ∈ Syl3(F), S/Φ(S) ≅ Z2 × Z2, P is cyclic and P operates via conjugation on 5 as a group of order 3, because in this case F/Φ(F) ≅ A4.

All rings considered will be associative. For a class M of rings let UM be the class of all rings having no non-zero homomorphic image in M. A hereditary class M of prime rings is called a “special class” [see 1, p. 191] if it has the property that when I ∈ M with I an ideal of a ring R, then R/I* ∈ Mwhere I* is the annihilator of I in R, and the corresponding radical class UM is then a “special radical”. Operators of the form (1) are called inner derivations and they (as well as their restrictions have been extensively studied (for example [1–3]). In [1], Fuad Kittaneh proved the following result.

We show in a direct and elementary way that the spherical building at infinity of every rank 3 affine building which satisfies Tits' Moufang condition, is itself a Moufang building. This result is also true for higher rank affine buildings by Tits' classification [4].
