Using a variation on the concept of a CS module, we describe exactly when a simple ring is isomorphic to a ring of matrices over a Bézout domain. Our techniques are then applied to characterise simple rings which are right and left Goldie, right and left semihereditary.

The methods of Lie theory have found widespread application in the study of the Lie algebras of vector fields on manifolds that arise naturally in geometric control theory (for some such applications, see [1]). Control systems on Lie groups themselves also have received considerable attention (see, for example, [9]). After reviewing basic facts about control systems on Lie groups, we derive the close relationship between attainable sets and Rådström's theory [12] of one-parameter semigroups of sets (Section 2). These ideas are then linked to the recently emerging Lie theory of semigroups [5]. The authors are indebted to the referee for pointing out some of the pertinent literature and analogous results from the area of geometric control.

An inverse semigroup S shall be said to be harmonic if every congruence on S is determined by any one of its classes. In other words, if λ and ρ are congruences on S having a congruence class in common, then λ = ρ. The class of all harmonic semigroups contains all bisimple inverse semigroups, as proved by Žitomirskiĭ [11] and also by Schein [10], and all congruence-free inverse semigroups. Moreover, is contained in the class of all 0-simple or simple inverse semigroups, as is easy to see. We shall show that there exist non-bisimple, non-congruence-free harmonic semigroups and that there are simple inverse semigroups which are not harmonic.

The finite dual $H^{\circ}$ of an affine commutative-by-finite Hopf algebra H is studied. Such a Hopf algebra H is an extension of an affine commutative Hopf algebra A by a finite dimensional Hopf algebra $\overline{H}$ . The main theorem gives natural conditions under which $H^{\circ}$ decomposes as a crossed or smash product of $\overline{H}^{\ast}$ by the finite dual $A^{\circ}$ of A. This decomposition is then further analysed using the Cartier–Gabriel–Kostant theorem to obtain component Hopf subalgebras of $H^{\circ}$ mapping onto the classical components of $A^{\circ}$ . The detailed consequences for a number of families of examples are then studied.

The Mountain-Pass Theorem of Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz (see [1]) and the Saddle Point Theorem of Rabinowitz (see [21]) are very important tools in the critical point theory of C1-functional. That is why it is natural to ask us what happens if the functional fails to be differentiable. The first who considered such a case were Aubin and Clarke (see [6]) and Chang (see [12]),who gave suitable variants of the Mountain-Pass Theorem for locally Lipschitz functionals which are denned on reflexive Banach spaces. For this aim they replaced the usual gradient with a generalized one, which was firstly defined by Clarke (see [13], [14]).As observed by Brezis (see [12, p. 114]), these abstract critical point theorems remain valid in non-reflexive Banach spaces.

Let H be a group of characters on an (algebraic) abelian group G. In a natural way, we may regard G as a group of characters on H. In this way, we obtain a duality between the two groups G and H. One may pose several problems about this duality. Firstly, one may ask whether there exists a group topology on G for which H is precisely the set of continuous characters. This question has been answered in the affirmative in [1]. We shall say that such a topology is compatible with the duality between G and H. Next, one may ask whether there exists a locally compact group topology on G which is compatible with a given duality and, if so, whether there is more than one such topology. It is this second question (previously considered by other authors, to whom we shall refer below) which we shall consider here.

In this paper we evaluate a few infinite integrals involving products of Legendre functions. The results obtained herein are quite general and include, as particular cases, some known results.

In his fundamental papers [7,8], Pelczynski introduced properties (u), (V), and (V*) as tools as study the structure of Banach spaces. Let X be a Banach space. It is said that X has property (u) if, for every weak Cauchy sequence (xn) in X, there exists a weakly unconditionally Cauchy (wuC) series in X such that the sequence is weakly null. It is said that X has property (V) if, for every Banach space Z, every unconditionally converging operator from X into Z is weakly compact; equivalently, whenever K is a bounded subset of X* such that for every wuC series in X, then K is relatively weakly compact. A Banach space X is said to have property (V*) if whenever K is a bounded subset of X such that 0 for every wuC series in X*, then K is relatively weakly compact. Some well-known results which shall be needed later are contained in the following.

Transitive group representations have their analogue for inverse semigroups as discovered by Schein [7]. The right cosets in the group case find their counterpart in the right ω-cosets and the symmetric inverse semigroup plays the role of the symmetric group. The general theory developed by Schein admits a special case discovered independently by Ponizovskiǐ [4] and Reilly [5]. For a discussion of this topic, see [1, §7.3] and [2, Chapter IV].

In this paper, we present an “order” characterization of completely bounded bimodule maps for bimodules over unital operator algebras. We use this result to prove a bimodule generalization of Wittstock's generalized Hahn-Banach theorem. Our proofs simplify and unify some of Wittstock's arguments.

In this paper, we study Hardy spaces associated with non-negative self-adjoint operators and develop their vector-valued theory. The complex interpolation scales of vector-valued tent spaces and Hardy spaces are extended to the endpoint p=1. The holomorphic functional calculus of L is also shown to be bounded on the associated Hardy space H 1 L (X). These results, along with the atomic decomposition for the aforementioned space, rely on boundedness of certain integral operators on the tent space T 1(X).

We consider frieze sequences corresponding to sequences of cluster mutations for affine D- and E-type quivers. We show that the cluster variables satisfy linear recurrences with periodic coefficients, which imply the constant coefficient relations found by Keller and Scherotzke. Viewing the frieze sequence as a discrete dynamical system, we reduce it to a symplectic map on a lower dimensional space and prove Liouville integrability of the latter.

We give a complete description of bounded composition operators on model subspaces KB, where B is a finite Blaschke product. In particular, if B has at least one finite pole, we show that the collection of all bounded composition operators on KB has a group structure. Moreover, if B has at least two distinct finite poles, this group is finite and cyclic.

In this note we investigate the diophantine equation<$$>x^y\pm y^x=\prod n_i!<$$>

where x and y are odd and greater than 1. We prove that this equation has no integer solutions.

We discuss classes of topological groups which can be approximated by p-adic Lie groups, and varieties of Hausdorff groups generated by classes of \hboxp-adic Lie groups (for a single or multiple p). We give several characterizations of locally compact pro-p-adic Lie groups and locally compact pro-discrete groups, and prove a “pro-version” of Cartan's Theorem: whenever a locally compact group is a pro-p-adic Lie group and a pro-q-adic Lie group for distinct primes p and q, it is pro-discrete. If a locally compact group can be approximated by p-adic Lie groups for variable primes p, then it is a pro-p-adic Lie group for some prime p.

Some recent results of Khukhro and Makarenko on the existence of characteristic -subgroups of finite index in a group G, for certain varieties , are used to obtain generalisations of some well-known results in the literature pertaining to groups G, in which all proper subgroups satisfy some condition or other related to the property ‘soluble-by-finite’. In addition, a partial generalisation is obtained for the aforementioned results on the existence of characteristic subgroups.

Dedekind domains, Artinian serial rings and right uniserial rings share the following property: Every cyclic right module is a direct sum of uniform modules. We first prove the following improvement of the well-known Osofsky-Smith theorem: A cyclic module with every cyclic subfactor a direct sum of extending modules has finite Goldie dimension. So, rings with the above-mentioned property are precisely rings of the title. Furthermore, a ring R is right q.f.d. (cyclics with finite Goldie dimension) if proper cyclic (≇ RR) right R-modules are direct sums of extending modules. R is right serial with all prime ideals maximal and ∩n ∈ ℕJn = Jm for some m ∈ ℕ if cyclic right R-modules are direct sums of quasi-injective modules. A right non-singular ring with the latter property is right Artinian. Thus, hereditary Artinian serial rings are precisely one-sided non-singular rings whose right and left cyclic modules are direct sums of quasi-injectives.
