Let X be a complex normed space, with dual space X′, and T a bounded linear operator on X. The numerical range V(T) of T is defined as {f(Tx): x∊X, f∊ X′, ∥x∥ = ∥f∥ = f(x) = 1}. Let ⃒V(T)⃒ denote sup {⃒λ⃒: λ∊ V(T)}. Our purpose is to prove the following theorem.

In this paper we evaluate a few infinite integrals involving products of Legendre functions. The results obtained herein are quite general and include, as particular cases, some known results.

The Mountain-Pass Theorem of Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz (see [1]) and the Saddle Point Theorem of Rabinowitz (see [21]) are very important tools in the critical point theory of C1-functional. That is why it is natural to ask us what happens if the functional fails to be differentiable. The first who considered such a case were Aubin and Clarke (see [6]) and Chang (see [12]),who gave suitable variants of the Mountain-Pass Theorem for locally Lipschitz functionals which are denned on reflexive Banach spaces. For this aim they replaced the usual gradient with a generalized one, which was firstly defined by Clarke (see [13], [14]).As observed by Brezis (see [12, p. 114]), these abstract critical point theorems remain valid in non-reflexive Banach spaces.

We develop some ideas contained in the author's paper [8] which was, in turn, inspired by Bierlein and Stich [5]. The main body of the present paper is divided into three sections. Section 2 is concerned with some vector-lattice-theoretical results. They are then applied to extensions of quasi-measures and measures in Sections 3 and 4, respectively.

Let X be a vector lattice, let x ε X+ and let S be a non-empty set. Theorems 1 and 2 describe some properties of the convex set

(see Section 2 for the definition of the sum above). The extreme points of Dx,s are characterized in terms of the components of x. It is also shown that if X has the principal projection property and S is countable, then extr Dx,s is, in some sense, large in Dx,s. Furthermore, for finite S, each point in Dx,s is then a sσ-convex combination of extreme ones.

In his fundamental papers [7,8], Pelczynski introduced properties (u), (V), and (V*) as tools as study the structure of Banach spaces. Let X be a Banach space. It is said that X has property (u) if, for every weak Cauchy sequence (xn) in X, there exists a weakly unconditionally Cauchy (wuC) series in X such that the sequence is weakly null. It is said that X has property (V) if, for every Banach space Z, every unconditionally converging operator from X into Z is weakly compact; equivalently, whenever K is a bounded subset of X* such that for every wuC series in X, then K is relatively weakly compact. A Banach space X is said to have property (V*) if whenever K is a bounded subset of X such that 0 for every wuC series in X*, then K is relatively weakly compact. Some well-known results which shall be needed later are contained in the following.

It is known [1] that for a partial endomorphism μ of a group G that maps the subgroup A ⊆ G onto B ⊆ G. G to be extendable to a total endomorphism μ* of a supergroup G* ⊆ G such that μ an isomorphism on G*(μ*)m for some positive integer m, it is necessary and sufficient that there exist in G a sequence of normal subgroups

such that L1 ƞA is the kernel of μ and

for ι = 1, 2,…, m–1.

The question then arises whether these conditions could be simplified when the group G is abelian. In this paper it is shown not only that the conditions are simplified when Gis abelian but also that the extension group G*⊇G can be chosen as an abelian group.

Let H be a group of characters on an (algebraic) abelian group G. In a natural way, we may regard G as a group of characters on H. In this way, we obtain a duality between the two groups G and H. One may pose several problems about this duality. Firstly, one may ask whether there exists a group topology on G for which H is precisely the set of continuous characters. This question has been answered in the affirmative in [1]. We shall say that such a topology is compatible with the duality between G and H. Next, one may ask whether there exists a locally compact group topology on G which is compatible with a given duality and, if so, whether there is more than one such topology. It is this second question (previously considered by other authors, to whom we shall refer below) which we shall consider here.

The notions of isoparametric maps and submanifolds in semi-Riemannian spaces are the generalizations of such notions in Riemannian spaces. The generalizations are different according to the purposes. We take the definitions as in the Riemannian case. Quadratic isoparametric maps and submanifolds are interesting examples which can be studied in detail. In this paper we study what we call quadratic isoparametric systems. In fact we give a classification of such systems of codimension 2. We use three different methods to show that quadratic isoparametric submanifolds of codimension 2 are homogeneous. The classification of quadratic isoparametric systems is done algebraically. By this we have changed the geometric problem of classifying quadratic submanifolds of codimension 2 into the algebraic problem of classifying quadratic isoparametric systems of codimension 2. The classification of such systems with arbitrary codimension is still open.

In a recent paper [1], Jones extended the definition of the convolution of distributions so that further convolutions could be defined. The convolution w1*w2 of two distributions w1 and w2 was defined as the limit ofithe sequence {wln*w2n}, provided the limit w exists in the sense that

By a representation of the extended Dynkin diagram we shall mean a list of 5 vector spaces P, E1, E2, E3, E4 over an algebraically closed field K, and 4 linear maps a1, a2, a3, a4 as shown.

The spaces need not be of finite dimension.

In their solution of the 4-subspace problem [6], Gelfand and Ponomarev have classified such representations when the spaces are finite dimensional. A representation like (1) can also be viewed as a module over the K-algebra R4 consisting of all 5 × 5 matrices having zeros off the first row and off the main diagonal.

In this note we consider measures on a left coset space G/H, where G is a locally compact group and H is a closed subgroup. We assume the natural topology in G/H and we denote the generic element of this space by xH (x∈G). Every element t∈G defines a homeomorphism of G/H given by t(xH) = (tx)H. A. Weil showed that a Baire measure on G/H invariant under all these homeomorphisms can exist only if

where Δ(x), δ(ξ) denote the modular functions in G, H [6, pp. 42–45]. We shall devote our investigations to inherited measures on G/H (cf. [3] and the definition below) invariant under homeomorphisms belonging to a normal and closed subgroup T ⊂ G.

We are here concerned with following result of Trench:

In this paper we consider mappings induced by matrix multiplication which are defined on lattices of matrices whose coordinates come from a fixed orthomodular lattice L (i.e. a lattice with an orthocomplementation denoted by ′ in which a ≦ b ⇒ a ∨ (a′ ∧ b) = b). will denote the set of all m × n matrices over L with partial order and lattice operations defined coordinatewise. For conformal matrices A and B the (i,j)th coordinate of the matrix product AB is defined to be (AB)ij = Vk(Aik ∧ BkJ). We assume familiarity with the notation and results of [1]. is an orthomodular lattice and the (lattice) centre of is defined as , where we say that A commutes with B and write . In § 1 it is shown that mappings from into characterized by right multiplication X → XP (P ∈ ) are residuated if and only if p ∈ ℘ (). (Similarly for left multiplication.) This result is used to show the existence of residuated pairs. Hence, in § 2 we are able to extend a result of Blyth [3] which relates invertible and cancellable matrices (see Theorem 3 and its corollaries). Finally, for right (left) multiplication mappings, characterizations are given in § 3 for closure operators, quantifiers, range closed mappings, and Sasaki projections.

Each bounded linear operator a on a Hilbert space K has a hermitian left-support projection p such that and (1 – p)K = ker α* = ker αα*. I demonstrate here that certain operators on Banach spaces also have left supports.

Throughout this paper X will be a complex Banach space with norm-dual X', and L(X) will be the Banach algebra of bounded linear operators on X. Two linear subspaces Y and Z of X are orthogonal (in the sense of G. Birkhoff) if ∥ y ∥ ≦ ∥ y + z ∥ (y ∈Y, z ∈ Z); this orthogonality relation is not, in general, symmetric. It is easy to see that pX is orthogonal to (1 – p)X if and only if the norm of p is 0 or 1, when p is a projection on X.

The aim of the present note is to describe the possible products when taking all the nonzero elements of a finite ring in some sequence. Compared with the analogous situation for finite groups, where the set of products of all elements has been shown in [2] to be a whole coset of the derived group, for rings the set of the above mentioned products will be proved either to be as large as possible or to consist of one or two elements only.

In this paper we characterize semigroups S which have a semigroup Q of left quotients, where Q is an ℛ-unipotent semigroup which is a band of groups. Recall that an ℛ-unipotent (or left inverse) semigroup S is one in which every ℛ-class contains a unique idempotent. It is well-known that any ℛ-unipotent semigroup 5 is a regular semigroup in which the set of idempotents is a left regular band in that efe = ef for any idempotents e, fin S. ℛ-unipotent semigroups were studied by several authors, see for example [1] and [13].Bailes [1]characterized ℛ-unipotent semigroups which are bands of groups. This characterization extended the structure of inverse semigroups which are semilattices of groups. Recently, Gould studied in [7]the semigroup S which has a semigroup Q of left quotients where Q is an inverse semigroup which is a semilattice of groups.

Much of the research done by different authors on the lattice of kernel functors (equivalently, linear topologies) has been summarized by Golan in [2]. More recently, the rings whose lattices of kernel functors are linearly ordered were introduced in [3] as a categorical generalization of valuation rings in the non-commutative case. Results (and examples) in [3] show that there is an abundance of non-commutative rings R whose lattices (R), both in Mod-R and R-Mod, are simultaneously linearly ordered; however, the question of the symmetry of this condition remained open. Here we will prove that, for every natural number n≥3, there exists a ring Rn such that (Mod-Rn) is a linearly ordered lattice of n elements, whereas (Rn-Mod) is not linearly ordered.

It has been shown ([8], [2], [1], [3], [9]) that a collection of physical operations or experiments can be represented by a nonempty set of nonempty sets satisfying certain technical conditions. Such a set is called a manual. The operations in are looked at as having no “before” and no “after”, i.e., they are isolated in time. If we wish to look at connected sequences of operations—in particular, if we wish to condition by events in —we must look at the compound manual c whose elements represent compound operations built up from the operations in the base manual .

Let R be a ring, see below for other notation. The functor categories (mod-R, Ab) and ((R-mod)op, Ab) have received considerable attention since the 1960s. The first of these has achieved prominence in the model theory of modules and most particularly in the investigation of the representation theory of Artinian algebras. Both [11, Chapter 12] and [8] contain accounts of the use (mod-R, Ab) may be put to in the model theoretic setting, and Auslander's review, [1], details the application of (mod-R, Ab) to the study of Artinian algebras. The category ((R-mod)op, Ab) has been less fully exploited. Much work, however, has been devoted to the study of the transpose functor between R-mod and mod-R. Warfield's paper, [13], describes this for semiperfect rings, and this duality is an essential component in the construction of almost split sequences over Artinian algebras, see [4]. In comparison, the general case has been neglected. This paper seeks to remedy this situation, giving a concrete description of the resulting equivalence between (mod-R, Ab) and ((R-mod)op, Ab) for an arbitrary ring R.
