Let X be a non-locally convex F-space (complete metric linear space) whose dual X′ separates the points of X. Then it is known that X possesses a closed subspace N which fails to be weakly closed (see [3]), or, equivalently, such that the quotient space X/N does not have a point separating dual. However the question has also been raised by Duren, Romberg and Shields [2] of whether X possesses a proper closed weakly dense (PCWD) subspace N, or, equivalently a closed subspace N such that X/N has trivial dual. In [2], the space Hp (0<p<1) was shown to have a PCWD subspace; later in [9], Shapiro showed that ℓp (0<p<1) and certain spaces of analytic function have PCWD subspaces. Our first result in this note is that every separable non-locally convex F-space with separating dual has a PCWD subspace.

An inverse semigroup is called E-unitary if the equations ea = e = e2 together imply a2 = a. In a previous paper [4], the author showed that any E-unitary inverse semigroup is isomorphic to a semigroup constructed from a triple (G, ℋ, ) consisting of a down-directed partially ordered set ℋ, an ideal and subsemilattice of ℋ and a group G acting on ℋ, on the left, by order automorphisms in such a way that ℋ = G. The structure theorem for completely 0-simple semigroups established by Rees [5] in 1940 has proved a very powerful tool in the investigation of such semigroups. In this paper the theorem is applied to an investigation of the subsemigroup of a completely 0-simple semigroup generated by its idempotents. Previous work on this problem has been carried out by Kim [4], but the present note offers a more direct approach.

In a recent paper [4] Bennett and Kalton characterized dense, barrelled subspaces of an arbitrary FK space, E. In this note, it is shown that if E is assumed to be an AK space, then the characterization assumes a simpler and more explicit form.

Arrange any n integers around a circle. The following procedure can be used to obtain another circle of n integers. For each adjacent pair of the first integers, form the absolute value of their difference and place it between them; then remove the original numbers. This procedure can be repeated over and over. When n = 4 this always leads eventually to a circle of zeros. On the other hand when n = 3, unless the original numbers are equal, this never happens. We treat below the general case and related problems, using for convenience a slightly different formulation. Surprisingly there is enough structure to lead to some interesting mathematics.

In a recent paper [5] Tits proves that a linear group over a field of characteristic zero is either solvable-by-finite or else contains a non-cyclic free subgroup. In this note we determine all the infinite irreducible solvable-by-finite subgroups of GL(2, F), where F is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. (Every reducible subgroup of GL(2, F) is metabelian.) In addition, we prove that an irreducible subgroup of GL(2, F) has an irreducible solvable-by-finite subgroup if and only if it contains an element of zero trace.

In this paper G is a nondiscrete compact abelian group with character group Г and M(G) the usual convolution algebra of Borel measures on G. We designate the following subspaces of M(G) employing the customary notations: Ma(G) those measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to Haar measure; MS(G) the space of measures concentrated on sets of Haar measure zero and Md(G) the discrete measures.

The spectrum of a prespectral operator was investigated by Dowson in [4]. The question was left open there whether, if a prespectral operator has closed range, the same is true for its scalar part. In this paper we answer this in the affirmative and point out some consequences concerning the essential spectra of prespectral operators. Also, following Taylor and Halberg [11], we present the state diagram of a prespectral operator, which will show, in a sense, the sharpness of the results of the spectral theory of such operators.

In 1954 N. Kimura proved that each idempotent in a semigroup is contained in a unique maximal subgroup of the semigroup and that distinct maximal subgroups are disjoint [13] (or see [6, pp. 21–23]). This generalized earlier results of Schwarz [14] and Wallace [15]. These maximal subgroups are important in the study of semigroups. If G is a group, then the collection S(G) of nonempty complexes of G is a semigroup and it is natural to inquire what properties of G are inherited by the maximal subgroups of S(G). There seems to be very little literature devoted to this subject. In [5, Theorem 2], with certain hypotheses placed on an idempotent, it was shown that if G is a lattice-ordered group (“1-group”) then a maximal subgroup of S(G) containing an idempotent satisfying these conditions admits a natural lattice-order. The main result of this note (Theorem 1) is that if Gis a representable 1-group and E is a normal idempotent of S(G) and a dual ideal of the lattice G, then the maximal subgroup of S(G) containing E admits a representable lattice-order.

A conjecture of reputable vintage states that c(G)≤b(G) + l for a finite p-group G of class c(G) and breadth b(G). This result has been proved in a medley of special cases and in particular whenever b(G)≤3. We now prove it for b(G) = 4.

We describe two congruences α and γ contained in ℒ on an arbitrary orthodox semigroup. Let S be a right unipotent semigroup. We show that (i) α is an inverse semigroup congruence and γ is the finest fundamental inverse semigroup congruence on S, (ii) S is a union of groups if and only if ℒ on S and (iii) S is a band of groups if and only if ℒ on S.

Let G be a finite group (with neutral element e) which operates trivially on the multiplicative group R* of a commutative ring R (with identity 1). Let H2(G, R*) denote the second cohomology group of G with respect to the trivial G-module R*. With every represented by the central factor system we associate the so called twisted group algebra (R, G, f) (see [3, V, 23.7] for the definition). (R, G, f) is determined by f up to R-algebra isomorphism. In this note we shall describe its representations in the case R is an algebraically closed field C of characteristic zero and G is an extra-special p-group P.

We say that a group G has finite lower central depth (or simply, finite depth) if the lower central series of G stabilises after a finite number of steps.

In [1], we proved that if G is a finitely generated soluble group in which each two generator subgroup has finite depth then G is a finite-by-nilpotent group. Here, in answer to a question of R. Baer, we prove the following stronger version of this result.

Given N a finite separable normal extension of a field F, it is well known that the Brauer group Br(N/F) of classes of central simple F-algebras split by N is isomorphic with Ext(N*, G), the classes of group extensions of N* by the Galois group G of N over F. In the construction of this isomorphism, a key role is played by the Skolem-Noether Theorem which extends automorphisms to inner automorphisms in central simple algebras.
