The main object of this note is to show that a proof given by A. J. Macintyre [2] of a result on the overconvergence of partial sums of power series works more easily in the context of Dirichlet series. Applying this observation to the particular Dirichlet series Σane−ns, we can remove certain restrictions which Macintyre finds necessary in the direct treatment of power series.

For any nilpotent group B of class c and any given element h of B generating the subgroup H, Wiegold [1] has shown that if, in addition, [B, H] has exponent pr for some prime p and integer r, then B can be embedded in a nilpotent group G such that G also contains psth root for h(s ≧ 1). In fact, Wiegold has gone further and calculated an upper bound for the class of G in terms of the variables c, p, r, s.

In 1927 Schreier [8] proved the Nielsen-Schreier Theorem that a subgroup H of a free group F is a free group by selecting a left transversal for H in F possessing a certain cancellation property. Hall and Rado [5] call a subset T of a free group F a Schreier system in F if it possesses this cancellation property, and consider the existence of a subgroup H of F such that a given Schreier system T is a left transversal for H in F.

Over a field of prime characteristic p the group algebra of a finite group has a non-trivial radical if and only if the order of the group is divisible by the prime p. In two earlier papers [7,8] we have imposed certain restrictions on the radical, namely that the radical be contained in the centre of the group algebra and that the radical be of square zero, and we have considered what influence these conditions have on the structure of the group itself. These conditions are, at first sight, of different types and our present paper is an attempt to generalise them by merely assuming that the radical is commutative.

A series ∑an is said to be summable (C, — 1) to s if it converges to s and nan = o(1) [8]. It is well known that this definition is equivalent to tn→s (n→∞), where tn = sn + nan, sn = ao + … + an. The series is summable | C, — 1 | to s if the sequence t = {tn} is of bounded variation (t ∈ B.V.), i.e. ∑ |; ▲tn |; = ∑ | tn - tn-1 | < ∞, and ∑ ▲tn = lim tn = s. In this paper two integrals involving E-functions are evaluated in terms of E-functions. The formulae to be established are:

Von Neumann's definition of the continuous sum of Hilbert spaces led Segal [3] to define the continuous sum of measures on a measurable space. In this note we employ Segal's definition to investigate the measure structures associated with a self-adjoint transformation of pure point spectrum and a self-adjoint transformation of pure continuous spectrum. While these transformations, as operators on separable Hilbert spaces, are the antithesis of each other we show that in their measure structure one is a particular case of the other.

Let ℒ V denote the algebra of all linear transformations on an n-dimensional vector space V over a field Φ. A subsemigroup S of the multiplicative semigroup of ℒ V will be said to be an affine semigroup over Φ if S is a linear variety, i.e., a translate of a linear subspace of ℒ V.

This concept in a somewhat different form was introduced and studied by Haskell Cohen and H. S. Collins [1]. In an appendix we give their definition and outline a method of describing possibly infinite dimensional affine semigroups in terms of algebras and supplemented algebras.

The set Dn of all n × n doubly-stochastic matrices is a semigroup with respect to ordinary matrix multiplication. This note is concerned with the determination of the maximal subgroups of Dn. It is shown that the number of subgroups is finite, that each subgroup is finite and is in fact isomorphic to a direct product of symmetric groups. These results are applied in § 3 to yield information about the least number of permutation matrices whose convex hull contains a given doubly-stochastic matrix.

Recently some inversion integrals for integral equations involving Legendre, Chebyshev, Gegenbauer and Laguerre polynomials in the kernel have been obtained [1, 2, 3, 5, 6]. In this note, two inversion integrals for integral equations involving Whittaker's function in the kernel are obtained. We shall make use of the following known integral [4, p. 402]

In a recent paper [2] one of the authors has introduced the concept of module type of a ring, for rings with unit. The object of this paper is to generalize this concept to arbitrary rings, without assuming the existence of a unit. This is easily accomplished for rings with one-sided unit, and we shall define the type of such a ring. Theorem 2.5 gives a relation between this type and the module type of [2], and permits the immediate extension of all results in [2] to rings with one-sided unit.

Let G be a graph with p points and q lines, and genus γ. The thicknesst(G) has been introduced as the minimum number of planar subgraphs whose union is G. This topological invariant of a graph has been studied by Battle, Harary and Kodama [1], Tutte [7], Beineke, Harary and Moon [3], and Beineke and Harary [2].

It is natural to generalise this concept of the thickness of a graph to the union of graphs with a specified genus. We say that the n-thickness of G is the minimum number of subgraphs of genus at most n whose union is G. Denoting the n-thickness of G by tn, we write in particular t0 the 0-thickness, i.e., the thickness.
