We mimic a flapping wing through a fluid–structure interaction (FSI) framework based upon a generalized lumped-torsional flexibility model. The developed fluid and structural solvers together determine the aerodynamic forces, wing deformation and self-propelled motion. A phenomenological solution to the linear single-spring structural dynamics equation is established to help offer insight and validate the computations under the limit of small deformation. The cruising velocity and power requirements are evaluated by varying the flapping Reynolds number ($20\leqslant Re_{f}\leqslant 100$), stiffness (represented by frequency ratio, $1\lesssim \unicode[STIX]{x1D714}^{\ast }\leqslant 10$) and the ratio of aerodynamic to structural inertia forces (represented by a dimensionless parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D713}$ ($0.1\leqslant \unicode[STIX]{x1D713}\leqslant 3$)). For structural inertia dominated flows ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D713}\ll 1$), pitching and plunging are shown to always remain in phase ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}\approx 0$) with the maximum wing deformation occurring at the end of the stroke. When aerodynamics dominates ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D713}>1$), a large phase difference is induced ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}\approx \unicode[STIX]{x03C0}/2$) and the maximum deformation occurs at mid-stroke. Lattice Boltzmann simulations show that there is an optimal $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}^{\ast }$ at which cruising velocity is maximized and the location of optimum shifts away from unit frequency ratio ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}^{\ast }=1$) as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D713}$ increases. Furthermore, aerodynamics administered deformations exhibit better performance than those governed by structural inertia, quantified in terms of distance travelled per unit work input. Closer examination reveals that although maximum thrust transpires at unit frequency ratio, it is not transformed into the highest cruising velocity. Rather, the maximum velocity occurs at the condition when the relative tip displacement ${\approx}\,0.3$.

Marine ice sheets are continent-scale glacial masses that lie partially submerged in the ocean, as applies to significant regions of Antarctica and Greenland. Such ice sheets have the potential to destabilise under a buoyancy-driven instability mechanism, with considerable implications for future sea level. This paper and its companion present a theoretical analysis of marine ice sheet dynamics under the effect of a potentially dominant control of the buttressing force generated by lateral stresses on the downstream floating component of the ice sheet (the ice shelf). The analysis reveals critical conditions under which ice-shelf buttressing suppresses the buoyancy-driven collapse of an ice sheet and elucidates the implications of lateral stresses on grounding-line control and overall ice-sheet structure. Integrations of a suitably simplified quasi-two-dimensional model are conducted, yielding analytical results that provide a quick assessment of steady-state balances for a given ice-sheet configuration. An analytical balance equation describing the spectrum of marine ice sheet flow regimes spanning zero to strong ice-shelf buttressing is developed. It is determined that the dynamics across this spectrum exhibits markedly different flow regimes and structural characteristics. For sufficient buttressing, the grounding line occurs near to where a lateral-drag controlled section of the ice shelf meets the bedrock, implying an independent control of the grounding line by the ice shelf. The role of basal stresses is relegated to controlling only the thickness of the ice sheet upstream of the grounding line, with no significant control of the grounding line itself. It is further demonstrated that lateral stresses are responsible for inducing additional secondary contacts between the ice shelf and the bedrock downstream of the grounding line, resulting in a rich variety of additional steady states. These inducements generate a further stabilising mechanism that can fully suppress grounding-line retreat and eliminate otherwise irreparable hysteresis effects. The results provide a conceptual framework for numerical and observational interpretation of marine ice sheet dynamics, and clarifies the manner in which ice shelves can control grounding-line positions independently. It is thus indicated that a full resolution of the fine details of the flow of ice shelves and the processes controlling their erosion and disintegration is necessary for the confident forecasting of possible ice-sheet collapse over the course of the next few centuries.

A long-standing open question in glaciology concerns the propensity for ice sheets that lie predominantly submerged in the ocean (marine ice sheets) to destabilise under buoyancy. This paper addresses the processes by which a buoyancy-driven mechanism for the retreat and ultimate collapse of such ice sheets – the marine ice sheet instability – is suppressed by lateral stresses acting on its floating component (the ice shelf). The key results are to demonstrate the transition between a mode of stable (easily reversible) retreat along a stable steady-state branch created by ice-shelf buttressing to tipped (almost irreversible) retreat across a critical parametric threshold. The conditions for triggering tipped retreat can be controlled by the calving position and other properties of the ice-shelf profile and can be largely independent of basal stress, in contrast to principles established from studies of unbuttressed grounding-line dynamics. The stability and recovery conditions introduced by lateral stresses are analysed by developing a method of constructing grounding-line stability (bifurcation) diagrams, which provide a rapid assessment of the steady-state positions, their natures and the conditions for secondary grounding, giving clear visualisations of global stabilisation conditions. A further result is to reveal the possibility of a third structural component of a marine ice sheet that lies intermediate to the fully grounded and floating components. The region forms an extended grounding area in which the ice sheet lies very close to flotation, and there is no clearly distinguished grounding line. The formation of this region generates an upsurge in buttressing that provides the most feasible mechanism for reversal of a tipped grounding line. The results of this paper provide conceptual insight into the phenomena controlling the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, the collapse of which has the potential to dominate future contributions to global sea-level rise.

Shape oscillations arising from the spherical instability of an oscillating bubble can be sustained in a stationary acoustic field. Describing such a steady state requires that nonlinear saturation effects are accounted for to counteract the natural exponential growth of the instability. In this paper, we analyse the establishment of finite-amplitude bubble shape oscillations as a consequence of nonlinear interactions between spherical and non-spherical modes. The set of coupled dynamical equations describing the volume pulsation and the shape oscillations is solved using a perturbation technique based on the Krylov–Bogoliubov method of averaging. A set of first-order differential equations governing the slowly varying amplitudes and phases of the different modes allows us to reproduce the exponential growth and subsequent nonlinear saturation of the most unstable, parametrically excited, shape mode. Solving these equations for steady-state conditions leads to analytical expressions of the modal amplitudes and derivations of the conditionally stable and absolutely stable thresholds for shape oscillations. The analysis of the solutions reveals the existence of a hysteretic behaviour, indicating that bubble shape oscillations could be sustained for acoustic pressures below the classical parametric threshold.

Using super-large-scale particle image velocimetry (SLPIV), we investigate the spatial structure of the near-wall region in the fully rough atmospheric surface layer with Reynolds number $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\sim O(10^{6})$. The field site consists of relatively flat, snow-covered farmland, allowing for the development of a fully rough turbulent boundary layer under near-neutral thermal stability conditions. The imaging field of view extends from 3 m to 19 m above the ground and captures the top of the roughness sublayer and the bottom of an extensive logarithmic region. The SLPIV technique uses natural snowfall as seeding particles for the flow imaging. We demonstrate that SLPIV provides reliable measurements of first- and second-order velocity statistics in the streamwise and wall-normal directions. Our results in the logarithmic region show that the structural features identified in laboratory studies are similarly present in the atmosphere. Using instantaneous vector fields and two-point correlation analysis, we identify vortex structures sharing the signature of hairpin vortex packets. We also evaluate the zonal structure of the boundary layer by tracking uniform momentum zones (UMZs) and the shear interfaces between UMZs in space and time. Statistics of the UMZs and shear interfaces reveal the role of the zonal structure in determining the mean and variance profiles. The velocity difference across the shear interfaces scales with the friction velocity, in agreement with previous studies, and the size of the UMZs scales with wall-normal distance, in agreement with the attached eddy framework.

We report experimental observations of turbulent flow with spherical particles in a square duct. Three particle sizes, namely $2H/d_{p}=40$, 16 and 9 ($2H$ being the duct full height and $d_{p}$ being the particle diameter), are investigated. The particles are nearly neutrally buoyant with a density ratio of 1.0035 and 1.01 with respect to the suspending fluid. Refractive index matched–particle image velocimetry (RIM–PIV) is used for fluid velocity measurement even at the highest particle volume fraction (20 %) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) for the particle velocity statistics for the flows seeded with particles of the two largest sizes, whereas only pressure measurements are reported for the smallest particles. Settling effects are seen at the lowest bulk Reynolds number $Re_{2H}\approx$ 10 000, whereas, at the highest $Re_{2H}\approx 27\,000$, particles are in almost full suspension. The friction factor of the suspensions is found to be significantly larger than that of single-phase duct flow at the lower $Re_{2H}$ investigated; however, the difference decreases when increasing the flow rate and the total drag approaches the values of the single-phase flow at the higher Reynolds number considered, $Re_{2H}=27\,000$. The pressure drop is found to decrease with the particle diameter for volume fractions lower than $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}=10\,\%$ for nearly all $Re_{2H}$ investigated. However, at the highest volume fraction $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}=20\,\%$, we report a peculiar non-monotonic behaviour: the pressure drop first decreases and then increases with increasing particle size. The decrease of the turbulent drag with particle size at the lowest volume fractions is related to an attenuation of the turbulence. The drag increase for the two largest particle sizes at $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}=20\,\%$, however, occurs despite this large reduction of the turbulent stresses, and it is therefore due to significant particle-induced stresses. At the lowest Reynolds number, the particles reside mostly in the bottom half of the duct, where the mean velocity significantly decreases; the flow is similar to that in a moving porous bed near the bottom wall and to turbulent duct flow with low particle concentration near the top wall.

In this paper separation-induced shock reflection is studied theoretically and experimentally. An analytical model is proposed to establish the connections among upstream conditions, downstream conditions and shock configurations. Furthermore, the minimum entropy production principle is employed to determine the incident shock angles as well as the criterion for the transition from regular reflection to Mach reflection, which agrees well with experimental results. Additionally, a solution path for a reflected shock that fulfills the minimum entropy production principle is found in the overall regular reflection domain, based on which the steadiest shock configuration may be determined according to upstream and downstream conditions.

We ‘derive’ the eddy-damped quasi-normal Markovian model (EDQNM) by a method that replaces the exact equation for the Fourier phases with a solvable stochastic model, and we analyse the entropy budget of the EDQNM. We show that a quantity that appears in the probability distribution of the phases may be interpreted as the rate at which entropy is transferred from the Fourier phases to the Fourier amplitudes. In this interpretation, the decrease in phase entropy is associated with the formation of structures in the flow, and the increase of amplitude entropy is associated with the spreading of the energy spectrum in wavenumber space. We use Monte Carlo methods to sample the probability distribution of the phases predicted by our theory. This distribution contains a single adjustable parameter that corresponds to the triad correlation time in the EDQNM. Flow structures form as the triad correlation time becomes very large, but the structures take the form of vorticity quadrupoles that do not resemble the monopoles and dipoles that are actually observed.

Both in rheometry and in fundamental fluid mechanics studies, the Taylor–Couette geometry is used frequently to investigate viscoelastic fluids. In order to ensure a constant shear rate in the gap between the inner and outer cylinders, such studies are usually restricted to the small-gap limit where the assumption of a linear velocity distribution is well justified. In conjunction with a sufficiently large aspect ratio $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$ (i.e. ratio of cylinder height to gap), the flow is then assumed to be viscometric. Here we demonstrate, using a perturbation technique with the curvature ratio (i.e. ratio of the half-gap to the mid-radius of the cylinders) as the perturbation parameter, full nonlinear simulations using a finite-volume technique, and supporting experiments, that, even in the creeping-flow (inertialess) narrow-gap limit, for viscoelastic fluids end effects due to finite aspect ratio always give rise to a secondary motion. Using the constant-viscosity Oldroyd-B model we are able to show that this secondary motion, as has been observed in related pressure-driven flows with curvature, such as the viscoelastic Dean flow, is solely a consequence of the combination of gradients of the first normal-stress difference and curvature. Our results show that end effects can significantly change the flow characteristics, especially for small aspect ratios, and this may have important consequences in some situations such as the onset criteria for purely elastic instabilities.

The high-speed impingement of droplets on a wall occurs widely in nature and industry. However, there is limited research available on the physical mechanism of the complicated flow phenomena during impact. In this study, a simplified multi-component compressible two-phase fluid model, coupled with the phase-transition procedure, is employed to solve the two-phase hydrodynamics system for high-speed cylindrical droplet impaction on a solid wall. The threshold conditions of the thermodynamic parameters of the fluid are established to numerically model the initiation of phase transition. The inception of cavitation inside the high-speed cylindrical droplets impacting on the solid wall can thus be captured. The morphology and dynamic characteristics of the high-speed droplet impingement process are analysed qualitatively and quantitatively, after the mathematical models and numerical procedures are carefully verified and validated. It was found that a confined curved shock wave is generated when the high-speed cylindrical droplet impacts the wall and this shock wave is reflected by the curved droplet surface. A series of rarefaction waves focus at a position at a distance of one third of the droplet diameter away from the top pole due to the curved surface reflection. This focusing zone is identified as the cavity because the local liquid state satisfies the condition for the inception of cavitation. Moreover, the subsequent evolution of the cavitation zone is demonstrated and the effects of the impact speed, ranging from $50$ to $200~\text{m}~\text{s}^{-1}$, on the deformation of the cylindrical droplet and the further evolution of the cavitation were studied. The focusing position, where the cavitation core is located, is independent of the initial impaction speed. However, the cavity zone is enlarged and the stronger collapsing wave is induced as the impaction speed increases.

In this study, direct numerical simulation of the flow around a rotating sphere at high Mach and low Reynolds numbers is conducted to investigate the effects of rotation rate and Mach number upon aerodynamic force coefficients and wake structures. The simulation is carried out by solving the three-dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes equations. A free-stream Reynolds number (based on the free-stream velocity, density and viscosity coefficient and the diameter of the sphere) is set to be between 100 and 300, the free-stream Mach number is set to be between 0.2 and 2.0, and the dimensionless rotation rate defined by the ratio of the free-stream and surface velocities above the equator is set between 0.0 and 1.0. Thus, we have clarified the following points: (1) as free-stream Mach number increased, the increment of the lift coefficient due to rotation was reduced; (2) under subsonic conditions, the drag coefficient increased with increase of the rotation rate, whereas under supersonic conditions, the increment of the drag coefficient was reduced with increasing Mach number; and (3) the mode of the wake structure becomes low-Reynolds-number-like as the Mach number is increased.

The separating and reattaching flows and the wake of a finite rectangular plate are studied by means of direct numerical simulation data. The large amount of information provided by the numerical approach is exploited here to address the multi-scale features of the flow and to assess the self-sustaining mechanisms that form the basis of the main unsteadinesses of the flows. We first analyse the statistically dominant flow structures by means of three-dimensional spatial correlation functions. The developed flow is found to be statistically dominated by quasi-streamwise vortices and streamwise velocity streaks as a result of flow motions induced by hairpin-like structures. On the other hand, the reverse flow within the separated region is found to be characterized by spanwise vortices. We then study the spectral properties of the flow. Given the strongly inhomogeneous nature of the flow, the spectral analysis has been conducted along two selected streamtraces of the mean velocity field. This approach allows us to study the spectral evolution of the flow along its paths. Two well-separated characteristic scales are identified in the near-wall reverse flow and in the leading-edge shear layer. The first is recognized to represent trains of small-scale structures triggering the leading-edge shear layer, whereas the second is found to be related to a very large-scale phenomenon that embraces the entire flow field. A picture of the self-sustaining mechanisms of the flow is then derived. It is shown that very-large-scale fluctuations of the pressure field alternate between promoting and suppressing the reverse flow within the separation region. Driven by these large-scale dynamics, packages of small-scale motions trigger the leading-edge shear layers, which in turn created them, alternating in the top and bottom sides of the rectangular plate with a relatively long period of inversion, thus closing the self-sustaining cycle.

Pulsatile flows are common in nature and in applications, but their stability and transition to turbulence are still poorly understood. Even in the simple case of pipe flow subject to harmonic pulsation, there is no consensus among experimental studies on whether pulsation delays or enhances transition. We here report direct numerical simulations of pulsatile pipe flow at low pulsation amplitude $A\leqslant 0.4$. We use a spatially localized impulsive disturbance to generate a single turbulent puff and track its dynamics as it travels downstream. The computed relaminarization statistics are in quantitative agreement with the experiments of Xu et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 831, 2017, pp. 418–432) and support the conclusion that increasing the pulsation amplitude and lowering the frequency enhance the stability of the flow. In the high-frequency regime, the behaviour of steady pipe flow is recovered. In addition, we show that, when the pipe length does not permit the observation of a full cycle, a reduction of the transition threshold is observed. We obtain an equation quantifying this effect and compare it favourably with the measurements of Stettler & Hussain (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 170, 1986, pp. 169–197). Our results resolve previous discrepancies, which are due to different pipe lengths, perturbation methods and criteria chosen to quantify transition in experiments.

We investigate the motion of a thin vortex filament in the presence of buoyancy. The asymptotic model of Moore & Saffman (Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. A, vol. 272, 1972, pp. 403–429) is extended to take account of buoyancy forces in the force balance on a vortex element. The motion of a buoyant vortex is given by the transverse component of force balance, while the tangential component governs the dynamics of the structure in the core. We show that the local acceleration of axial flow is generated by the external pressure gradient due to gravity. The equations are then solved for vortex rings. An analytic solution for a buoyant vortex ring at a small initial inclination is obtained and asymptotically agrees with the literature.

Numerous efforts have been devoted to the derivation of equations describing the kinematics of finite-size spherical particles in arbitrary fluid flows. These approaches rely on asymptotic arguments to obtain a description of the particle motion in terms of a slow manifold. Here we present a novel approach that results in kinematic models with unprecedented accuracy compared with traditional methods. We apply a recently developed machine learning framework that relies on (i) an imperfect model, obtained through analytical arguments, and (ii) a long short-term memory recurrent neural network. The latter learns the mismatch between the analytical model and the exact velocity of the finite-size particle as a function of the fluid velocity that the particle has encountered along its trajectory. We show that training the model for one flow is sufficient to generate accurate predictions for any other arbitrary flow field. In particular, using as an exact model for trajectories of spherical particles, the Maxey–Riley equation, we first train the proposed machine learning framework using trajectories from a cellular flow. We are then able to accurately reproduce the trajectories of particles having the same inertial parameters for completely different fluid flows: the von Kármán vortex street as well as a two-dimensional turbulent fluid flow. For the second example we also demonstrate that the machine learned kinematic model successfully captures the spectrum of the particle velocity, as well as the extreme event statistics. The proposed scheme paves the way for machine learning kinematic models for bubbles and aerosols using high-fidelity DNS simulations and experiments.

The dynamics of a small rigid spherical particle in an unbounded pulsating vortex is considered, keeping constant the particle Stokes number $St$ and varying the particle-to-fluid density ratio $\unicode[STIX]{x1D71A}$ and the pulsation frequency of the vortex $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$. We show that the asymptotic dynamics of a particle of given $St$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D71A}$ can be controlled by varying $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$, turning the vortex core either into an attractor or a repellor. The creation of non-trivial particle limit cycles characterizes the boundaries between centrifugal and centripetal regions in parameter space. The discovered phenomenon is termed oscillatory switching centrifugation and its implications for particle demixing processes, biological protocols, lab-on-a-chip devices and dynamical systems theory are discussed at the end.

When a confined bubble translates steadily in a cylindrical capillary tube, without the consideration of gravity effects, a uniform thin film of liquid separates the bubble surface and the tube wall. In this work, we investigate how this steady state is established by considering the transitional motion of the bubble as it adjusts its film thickness profile between two steady states, characterized by two different bubble speeds. During the transition, two uniform film regions coexist, separated by a step-like transitional region. The transitional motion also requires modification of the film solution near the rear of the bubble, which depends on the ratio of the two capillary numbers. These theoretical results are verified by experiments and numerical simulations.
