In an open channel flow, deviations to the lower topography can induce abrupt changes in the wave height, known as hydraulic jumps. This phenomenon occurs when the flow switches from subcritical to supercritical (or vice versa), and is commonly observed in rivers, flumes and weirs. Theoretical insight is typically sought through the study of reduced models such as the forced Korteweg–de Vries equation, in which previous work has predominantly focused on either stationary formulations or the initial transient behaviour caused by perturbations. In a joint theoretical and numerical study of the free-surface Euler equations, Keeler & Blyth (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 993, 2024, A9) have detected a new class of unsteady solutions to this problem. These emerge from an unstable steady solution, and feature large-amplitude time-periodic ripples emitted from a sudden decrease in the water depth forced by topography, known as a hydraulic fall.

Adding polymers to turbulent Newtonian fluid flows can have dramatic effects. A well-known example is a significant drag reduction by flexible polymers in turbulent wall-bounded flows. In numerical studies of polymer drag reduction, polymers are often modelled as dumbbells of two beads connected by a finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) spring. There are natural queries whether this highly simplified coarse-grained model is adequate for describing a polymer macromolecule in turbulent flows. By carrying out Eulerian–Lagrangian simulations of polymers, described by different models, in a turbulent pipe flow, Serafini et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 987, 2024, R1) have demonstrated that the FENE dumbbell model can accurately capture polymer extension statistics as compared with the realistic Kuhn chain model. Their work further reveals the surprising result that increasing the number of beads in a FENE chain worsens its accuracy in characterizing polymer spatial conformations at large Weissenberg numbers.

Diffuse interface models are an important class of models used to describe multi-phase flows. In the case of incompressible viscous fluids there are a number of different diffuse interface models which have been known for many years. Nevertheless, a model based on mixture theory with a full set of conservation laws for the conservation of linear momentum of each constituent was not yet available. This gap was filled by ten Eikelder et al. (J. Fluid Mech., in press) recently and a first comparison with known models of Navier–Stokes/Cahn–Hilliard type is given. A detailed understanding of the relations between these models remains an important question.

The clustering of debris floating on liquid interfaces such as water surfaces is a complex phenomenon that finds its applications in numerous examples from industrial processing and environmental systems. The recent paper by Shin & Coletti (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 984, 2024, R7) presents an experimental campaign investigating the three effects of turbulence, particle interactions and interfacial effects, to elucidate how the three force scales drag, capillary forces and lubrication give rise to three distinct regimes of clustering in dense suspensions. The study, hence, provides a useful systematic to categorize the clustering mechanisms. As an important finding, it is shown that, depending on volume fraction and non-dimensional turbulent shear, particles either tend to cluster into aggregate sizes larger than the Kolmogorov scale or can break into pieces that are as small as the primary particle size.

Microbes play a primary role in wide-ranging biogeochemical and physiological processes, where ambient fluid flows are responsible for cell dispersal as well as mixing of dissolved resources, signalling molecules and biochemical products. Determining the simultaneous (and often coupled) transport properties of actively swimming cells together with passive scalars is key to understanding and ultimately predicting these complex processes. In recent work, Ran & Arratia (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 988, 2024, A25) present the striking observation that dilute concentrations of swimming bacteria severely hinder scalar transport through Lagrangian vortex boundaries in a chaotic flow. Analysis of rotation-dominated regions suggests that local accumulation of bacteria enhances the strength of transport barriers and highlights the role of understudied elliptical Lagrangian coherent structures in bacterial and multicomponent transport.

Steady streaming is a peculiar flow, induced by the oscillation of an object with respect to the fluid in which it is embedded. While the oscillation amplitude may be extremely small, the nonlinearity due to fluid inertia gives rise to this steady flow. Large and powerful vortices develop around the object. Usually, the streaming is scrutinised in the case of homogeneous objects. Here, Cui et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 979, 2024, A7) derive the streaming around a soft elastic sphere containing a solid core. This elaborate derivation opens a new description of streaming in biological soft environments and robotics.

Subcritical pipe flow transition has received a great deal of attention over the past decades, as it constitutes a quintessential bifurcation process between two metastable fluid states: the laminar and turbulent solutions. Coherent lower-branch structures, forming flow states that facilitate between these two attracting equilibria, have been proposed that together form an edge manifold in phase space separating relaminarizing from transitioning perturbations. Typically, direct numerical simulations or low-dimensional model equations have been used to study this edge manifold with bisection methods. In the article by Kaszás & Haller (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 979, 2024, A48), an effective nonlinear invariant-manifold technique has been applied to extract a low-dimensional, global representation of the phase-space dynamics directly from simulation data. It allows the computation of the intersection of the edge manifold with a low-dimensional surface that is strikingly accurate in predicting the long-term dynamics of perturbations about the lower-branch solution and thus provides an accessible parameterization of the edge manifold for subcritical pipe flow transition.

When a fluid system is subjected to an acoustic wave (or another periodic actuation), the response of the fluid is not purely periodic, but is rather characterized by the combination of a periodic flow and a steady Stokes drift component, where the former is, in many cases, an acoustic wave and the latter is commonly referred to as acoustic streaming. Classical theories of acoustic streaming have focused on slow acoustic streaming, where the periodic flow is the leading-order flow, and is insensitive to the steady flow component which appears as a small correction and is characterized by a small hydrodynamic Reynolds number. In contrast, Dubrovski et al. (J. Fluid Mech. vol. 975, 2023, A4) tackle the fast acoustic streaming regime – conceived by Zarembo (Acoustic streaming. In High-Intensity Ultrasonic Fields, 1971, pp. 135–199. Springer) approximately fifty years ago – where both the periodic and steady flow components are of a similar order of magnitude such that the periodic flow both supports and is simultaneously impacted by the steady flow. They present a novel theoretical framework that accounts for the convection of momentum both within and between the periodic and steady flow to extend slow-streaming equations to the case of steady flow with arbitrary hydrodynamic Reynolds number. They leverage a scaling analysis of the resulting system of equations and a case study to demonstrate the compatibility of their equations with slow streaming theories and highlight the distinctive features of fast streaming.

The dynamics of soft porous media involves complex interactions between fluid flow and elasticity. The recent paper by Fiori et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 974, 2023, A2) highlights phenomena relating to the periodic loading of such poro-elastic media, including hysteresis and the localisation of deformation at high frequencies. These effects could result in rectification and steady streaming in many important applications.

‘Storm oil’ – nearly water-insoluble oil poured into the ocean and acting as a surfactant – has been used since ancient times to smooth the waves on the ocean. It was first scientifically described by Benjamin Franklin (Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond., vol. 64, 1774, pp. 445–460). In a recent paper, by combining highly controlled experiments in a wave tank and direct numerical simulations, Erinin et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 972, 2023, R5) have now beautifully revealed the strong effect of soluble surfactants on the dynamics of plunging breakers. Remarkably, it is not the change in surface tension which mainly matters, but the surface tension gradient which emerges through compression and dilation of the plunging breaker surface.

Ding (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 970, 2023, A27) analysed the dispersion of a multicomponent electrolyte solution flowing through a channel. An inequality in ionic diffusion coefficients induces a spontaneous electric field that leads to nonlinear coupling of species fluxes. Ding presented an effective equation for the long-time evolution of the ionic concentration distributions, which revealed novel features compared with the classic case of an uncharged solute. This work highlights the rich physics of ion diffusion and electro-migration in non-uniform flows.

An important problem in passive scalar transport is to parametrize the effect of a fluctuating component of the flow, in order to overcome a limited resolution. A local effective diffusivity is one such parametrization, and over the years there have been many different suggestions for ‘closures’ that relate the advective flux to gradients of the mean concentration. Souza et al. (J. Fluid Mech., 2023, in press) introduce a stochastic framework where the local effective diffusivity is replaced by an exact effective diffusivity operator. By computing this operator for various examples, they quantify deviations from the local approximation, which can suggest areas of improvement and novel closure models.

Convection from a buoyancy source distributed over a vertical wall has diverse applications, from the natural ventilation of buildings to the melting of marine-terminating glaciers which impacts on future sea level. A key challenge involves determining how the rate and mechanisms of turbulent heat transfer should be extrapolated across a range of scales. Ke et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 964, 2023, A24) explore transitions in the turbulent flow dynamics using direct numerical simulation of a convective boundary layer at a heated vertical wall. A classical regime of heat transfer, consistent with previous laboratory experiments, gives way with increasing accumulation of buoyancy to an ultimate regime with enhanced heat transfer. The key to this transition lies in a near-wall sublayer, with a switch from laminar buoyancy-driven dynamics to a sublayer dominated by turbulence and shear instability from the mean flow.

Understanding the transport of particles immersed in a carrier fluid (bedload transport) is still an exciting challenge. Among the different types of gas–solid flows, when the dynamics of solid particles is essentially dominated by collisions between them, kinetic theory can be considered as a reliable tool to derive continuum approaches from a fundamental point of view. In a recent paper, Chassagne et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 964, 2023, A27) proposed a two-fluid model based on modifications to a classical kinetic theory model (Garzó & Dufty, Phys. Rev. E, vol. 59, 1999, pp. 5895–5911). First, in contrast to the classical model, the model proposed by Chassagne et al. takes into account the interparticle friction not only in the radial distribution function but also through an effective restitution coefficient in the rate of dissipation term of granular temperature. As a second modification, at the top of the bed where the volume fraction is quite small, the model accounts for the saltation regime in the continuum framework. The theoretical results derived from the model agree with discrete simulations for moderate and high densities and they are also consistent with experiments. Thus, the model proposed by Chassagne et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 964, 2023, A27) helps provide a better understanding of the combined impact of friction and inelasticity on the macroscopic properties of granular flows.

The swinging motion of the eigenmodes of a free inviscid drop has been known for nearly a century. Yet, as the drop sits on a solid substrate, getting flattened by gravity, analytical solutions waver due to the non-spherical base state and the dynamics of the three-phase contact line. The recent paper by Zhang et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 962, 2023, A10) investigated the effect of gravity on the harmonic modes of sessile droplets for free and pinned contact line conditions. An effective boundary element method has been used to solve both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes for a variety of Bond numbers and static contact angles, also revising on the way a debated capillary instability.

While large-scale seafloor features (e.g. continental slopes, mid-ocean ridges) help shape the broad patterns of ocean circulation, small-scale rough topography (e.g. seamounts, abyssal hills) can also impact the large-scale dynamics in two significant ways. First, they impact the momentum budget through flow steering, flow blocking and drag force, non-local momentum transfer via the generation of radiating internal waves and momentum dissipation by topographically induced turbulence. Second, they impact the density budget. Turbulence induced by flow–topography interactions facilitates ocean overturning circulation by upwelling dense, deep waters which form in polar oceans and sink to the abyss. Rough topography and its associated dynamics are of subgrid scale in Earth systems models (ESMs) and need parameterization for the foreseeable future. A parameterization of the intertwined impacts of flow–topography interactions on momentum and density budgets is currently non-existent, although its importance is well established. Radko (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 961, 2023, A24) provides a novel analytical model for representing the impact of rough seafloor on larger-scale flows, spanning slow to fast flow-speed regimes in homogeneous and multilayer models. The proposed ‘closure’ is in remarkable agreement with high-resolution numerical simulations and provides a crucial step forward in parameterizing the impact of rough topography in coarse-resolution ocean models. Extending the model to the full Navier–Stokes equations, linking it to the density budget and considering more realistic ocean topography are three critical future steps towards implementing Radko's theory in operational ESMs.

Despite elegant theoretical descriptions and numerous potential applications in nature, the various features of wave turbulence and its associated transfers across scales are still debated. One reason is the difficulty, both experimentally and numerically, of studying a chaotic nonlinear wavy system with sufficient precision, over a sufficient duration, and with sufficient separation between the injection scale, the system scale and the dissipation scale, to dwell in detail on the description of a statistically converged state. The numerical study of Thomas & Ding (J. Fluid Mech., 2023, this issue) sheds new light on one key aspect of this global problem: the upscale transfer of waves in rotating shallow water equations, which is of relevance to atmosphere and ocean dynamics. Their results first confirm the theoretical predictions, with a robust inverse wave cascade, a predominant role of quartic resonances and a slope value of the wave spectrum in agreement with the expected range. But their deeper analysis of the results also highlights some weakness in the theoretical foundations, exhibiting strong intermittency and departure from ideal Gaussian statistics. This work thus calls for improved modelling, acknowledging that important large-scale climatic features could actually result from the piling up of small-scale waves, unresolved by typical Earth system models. Beyond rotating shallow water systems, this study more generically resonates with open questions in the field of wave turbulence and its geophysical applications, including recent research in deep rotating and stably stratified systems.

Coupling surface deformations with active stresses in two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal films leads to a rich area of investigation, particularly in biological fluid mechanics across multiple scales from tissue mechanics to cell membrane mechanics. In Al-Izzi & Morris (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 957, 2023, A4), the authors derive the complete set of governing equations for such systems. Their results provide an extended theoretical framework with which active nematic fluid films with in-plane flow and out-of-plane deformation can be analysed. To illustrate the potential applications of this framework, a few specific biologically inspired examples are discussed.

Kirby et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 953, 2022, A39) adapted the two-scale momentum theory (Nishino & Dunstan, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 894, A2) to large finite-sized farms. They demonstrated that analytical estimates agree excellently with large eddy simulations, and that the model provides a good upper limit of the power production for a given array density. Crucially, they introduced the concepts of farm-scale losses, caused by the atmospheric response to the whole farm, and turbine-scale losses, owing to internal flow interactions in the wind farm. These two new theoretical concepts offer a novel way to analyse the performance of extended wind farms. For large offshore wind farms, losses at the wind-farm scale are typically twice as high as at the turbine scale. This demonstrates that there is limited potential for layout optimizations of extended arrays. Instead, optimization strategies should focus on developing methods to increase the energy entrainment into the wind farm. This work provides an exciting roadmap for analysing the effective efficiency of large wind farms.

The dynamics of charge-free dielectric droplets under electric fields in weakly conducting fluids is relevant to a large range of technological and environmental applications. In Sorgentone & Vlahovska (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 951, 2022, R2), the authors investigate by asymptotic theory and boundary integral simulations the motility states of a pair of dissimilar droplets at an arbitrary orientation to the electric field and find a state of steady motility that is carefully balanced between repulsion and contact.
