Let X be a smooth projective variety over a finite field . We discuss the unramified cohomology group H3nr(X, ℚ/ℤ(2)). Several conjectures put together imply that this group is finite. For certain classes of threefolds, H3nr(X, ℚ/ℤ(2)) actually vanishes. It is an open question whether this holds for arbitrary threefolds. For a threefold X equipped with a fibration onto a curve C, the generic fibre of which is a smooth projective surface V over the global field (C), the vanishing of H3nr(X, ℚ/ℤ(2)) together with the Tate conjecture for divisors on X implies a local-global principle of Brauer–Manin type for the Chow group of zero-cycles on V. This sheds new light on work started thirty years ago.

We present a new proof of Anderson's result that the real K-theory spectrum is Anderson self-dual up to a fourfold suspension shift; more strongly, we show that the Anderson dual of the complex K-theory spectrum KU is C2-equivariantly equivalent to Σ4KU, where C2 acts by complex conjugation. We give an algebro-geometric interpretation of this result in spectrally derived algebraic geometry and apply the result to calculate 2-primary Gross-Hopkins duality at height 1. From the latter we obtain a new computation of the group of exotic elements of the K(1)-local Picard group.

We describe structural properties of globally defined Mackey functors related to the stratification theory of algebras. We show that over a field of characteristic zero they form a highest weight category and we also determine precisely when this category is semisimple. This approach is used to show that the Cartan matrix is often symmetric and non-singular, and we are able to compute finite parts of it in some instances. We also develop a theory of vertices of globally defined Mackey functors in the spirit of group representation theory, as well as giving information about extensions between simple functors.

In Hazrat gave a K-theoretic invariant for Leavitt path algebras as graded algebras. Hazrat conjectured that this invariant classifies Leavitt path algebras up to graded isomorphism, and proved the conjecture in some cases. In this paper, we prove that a weak version of the conjecture holds for all finite essential graphs.

Under the assumption that the base field k has characteristic 0, we prove a formula for the push-forward class of Bott-Samelson resolutions in the algebraic cobordism ring of the flag bundle. We specialise our formula to connective K-theory providing a geometric interpretation to the double β-polynomials of Fomin and Kirillov by computing the fundamental classes of schubert varieties. As a corollary we obtain a Thom-Porteous formula generalising those of the Chow ring and of the Grothendieck ring of vector bundles.

We introduce a refinement of the Bloch-Wigner complex of a field F. This refinement is complex of modules over the multiplicative group of the field. Instead of computing K2(F) and Kind3(F) - as the classical Bloch-Wigner complex does - it calculates the second and third integral homology of SL2(F). On passing to F× -coinvariants we recover the classical Bloch-Wigner complex. We include the case of finite fields throughout the article.

In this work we consider deformations of Leibniz algebras over a field of characteristic zero. The main problem in deformation theory is to describe all non-equivalent deformations of a given object. We give a method to solve this problem completely, namely work out a construction of a versal deformation for a given Leibniz algebra, which induces all non-equivalent deformations and is unique on the infinitesimal level.

Let A and B be separable nuclear continuous C(X)-algebras over a finite dimensional compact metrizable space X. It is shown that an element σ of the parametrized Kasparov group KKX(A,B) is invertible if and only all its fiberwise components σx ∈ KK(A(x),B(x)) are invertible. This criterion does not extend to infinite dimensional spaces since there exist nontrivial unital separable continuous fields over the Hilbert cube with all fibers isomorphic to the Cuntz algebra . Several applications to continuous fields of Kirchberg algebras are given. It is also shown that if each fiber of a separable nuclear continuous C(X)-algebra A over a finite dimensional locally compact space X satisfies the UCT, then A satisfies the UCT.

It is shown that the set of orbits of the action of the elementary symplectic group on all unimodular rows over a commutative ring of characteristic not 2 is identical with the set of orbits of the action of the corresponding elementary general linear group. This result is used to improve injective stability for K1 of the symplectic group over non-singular affine algebras.

The Guillemin–Sternberg conjecture states that “quantisation commutes with reduction” in a specific technical setting. So far, this conjecture has almost exclusively been stated and proved for compact Lie groups G acting on compact symplectic manifolds, and, largely due to the use of Spinc Dirac operator techniques, has reached a high degree of perfection under these compactness assumptions. In this paper we formulate an appropriate Guillemin–Sternberg conjecture in the general case, under the main assumptions that the Lie group action is proper and cocompact. This formulation is motivated by our interpretation of the “quantisation commuates with reduction” phenomenon as a special case of the functoriality of quantisation, and uses equivariant K-homology and the K-theory of the group C*-algebra C*(G) in a crucial way. For example, the equivariant index – which in the compact case takes values in the representation ring R(G) – is replaced by the analytic assembly map – which takes values in K0(C*(G)) – familiar from the Baum–Connes conjecture in noncommutative geometry. Under the usual freeness assumption on the action, we prove our conjecture for all Lie groups G having a discrete normal subgroup Γ with compact quotient G/Γ, but we believe it is valid for all unimodular Lie groups.

We compute the total Ij -cohomology of a projective bundle over a smooth scheme.

Let C*(E) be the graph C*-algebra associated to a graph E and let J be a gauge-invariant ideal in C*(E). We compute the cyclic six-term exact sequence in K-theory associated to the extension

in terms of the adjacency matrix associated to E. The ordered six-term exact sequence is a complete stable isomorphism invariant for several classes of graph C*-algebras, for instance those containing a unique proper nontrivial ideal. Further, in many other cases, finite collections of such sequences constitute complete invariants.

Our results allow for explicit computation of the invariant, giving an exact sequence in terms of kernels and cokernels of matrices determined by the vertex matrix of E.

Let A be a ring with anti-involution and F a nice functor (tensor or symmetric power, for example) from finitely-generated projective A-modules to abelian groups. We show that the homology of the hyperbolic unitary groups Un,n(A) with coefficients in F(A2n) can be expressed stably (i.e. after taking the colimit over n) by the homology of these groups with untwisted coefficients and functor homology groups that we can compute in suitable cases (for example, when A is a field of characteristic 0 or a ring without ℤ-torsion and F a tensor power). This extends the result where A is a finite field, which was dealt with previously by C. Vespa and the author (Ann. Sci. ENS, 2010).

The proof begins by relating, without any assumption on F, our homology groups to the homology of a category of hermitian spaces with coefficients twisted by F. Then, when F is polynomial, we establish — following a method due to Scorichenko — an isomorphism between this homology and the homology of another category of (possibly degenerate) hermitian spaces, which is computable (in good cases) by standard methods of homological algebra in functor categories (using adjunctions, Künneth formula…). We give some examples.

Finally, we deal with the analogous problem for non-hyperbolic unitary groups in some special cases, for example euclidean orthogonal groups On (A) (the ring A being here commutative). The isomorphism between functor homology and group homology with twisted coefficients does not hold in full generality; nevertheless we succeed to get it when A is a field or, for example, a subring of ℚ containing ℤ[1/2]. The method, which is similar to that in the previous case, uses a general result of symmetrisation in functor homology proved at the beginning of the article.

We prove an index theorem for families of pseudodifferential operators generalizing those studied by C. Callias, N. Anghel and others. Specifically, we consider operators on a manifold with boundary equipped with an asymptotically conic (scattering) metric, which have the form D + iΦ, where D is elliptic pseudodifferential with Hermitian symbols, and Φ is a Hermitian bundle endomorphism which is invertible at the boundary and commutes with the symbol of D there. The index of such operators is completely determined by the symbolic data over the boundary. We use the scattering calculus of R. Melrose in order to prove our results using methods of topological K-theory, and we devote special attention to the case in which D is a family of Dirac operators, in which case our theorem specializes to give family versions of the previously known index formulas.

Motivated by traces of matrices and Euler characteristics of topological spaces, we expect abstract traces in a symmetric monoidal category to be “additive”. When the category is “stable” in some sense, additivity along cofiber sequences is a question about the interaction of stability and the monoidal structure.

May proved such an additivity theorem when the stable structure is a triangulation, based on new axioms for monoidal triangulated categories. in this paper we use stable derivators instead, which are a different model for “stable homotopy theories”. We define and study monoidal structures on derivators, providing a context to describe the interplay between stability and monoidal structure using only ordinary category theory and universal properties. We can then perform May's proof of the additivity of traces in a closed monoidal stable derivator without needing extra axioms, as all the needed compatibility is automatic.

We finish the proof of the main structure theorems for a Chevalley group G(Φ, R) of rank ≥ 2 over an arbitrary commutative ring R. Namely, we prove that for any admissible pair (A, B) in the sense of Abe, the corresponding relative elementary group E(Φ,R, A, B) and the full congruence subgroup C(Φ, R, A, B) are normal in G(Φ, R) itself, and not just normalised by the elementary group E(Φ, R) and that [E (Φ, R), C(Φ, R, A, B)] = E, (Φ, R, A, B). For the case Φ = F4 these results are new. The proof is new also for other cases, since we explicitly define C (Φ, R, A, B) by congruences in the adjoint representation of G (Φ, R) and give several equivalent characterisations of that group and use these characterisations in our proof.

The simplicial extension of any functor from Sets to Sets which commutes with directed colimits respects weak equivalences. In the present paper we construct a framework which allows one to extend this result to a wide class of model categories and functors between such categories.

C*-algebras A of compact operators are characterized as those C*-algebras of coefficients of Hilbert C*-modules for which (i) every bounded A-linear operator between two Hilbert A-modules possesses an adjoint operator, (ii) the kernels of all bounded A-linear operators between Hilbert A-modules are orthogonal summands, (iii) the images of all bounded A-linear operators with closed range between Hilbert A-modules are orthogonal summands, and (iv) for every Hilbert A-module every Hilbert A-submodule is a topological summand. Thus, the theory of Hilbert C*-modules over C*-algebras of compact operators has similarities with the theory of Hilbert spaces. In passing, we obtain a general closed graph theorem for bounded module operators on arbitrary Hilbert C*-modules.

Let M be a closed manifold and α: π1 (M) → Un a representation. We give a purely K-theoretic description of the associated element in the K-theory group of M with ℝ/ℤ-coefficients ([α] ∈ K1 (M; ℝ/ℤ)). To that end, it is convenient to describe the ℝ/ℤ-K-theory as a relative K-theory of the unital inclusion of ℂ into a finite von Neumann algebra B. We use the following fact: there is, associated with α, a finite von Neumann algebra B together with a flat bundle ℰ → M with fibers B, such that Eα ⊗ ℰ is canonically isomorphic with ℂn ⊗ ℰ, where Eα denotes the flat bundle with fiber ℂn associated with α. We also discuss the spectral flow and rho type description of the pairing of the class [α] with the K-homology class of an elliptic selfadjoint (pseudo)-differential operator D of order 1.

We show that for a field k, algebraic over ℚ, and F a field of characteristic zero, the triangular spectra of mixed Tate motives (resp. mixed Artin-Tate motives), denoted by DMT(k)F (resp. DMAT(k)F), are both isomorphic to spec(F). We further compute the Picard groups of DMT(k)F and DMAT(k)ℚ.
