We develop Kunneth theorems and obtain detailed results on unstable operations in 2-adic KO-cohomology and, more generally, in united 2-adic K-cohomology. These results are needed for work on the K-localizations of spaces at the prime 2 and should be of independent interest. Our proofs of relations for unstable operations rely on Atiyah's Real K-theory and on a convenient mod 2 simplification of 2-adic KO-cohomology.

We define a dimension for a triangulated category. We prove a representability Theorem for a class of functors on finite dimensional triangulated categories. We study the dimension of the bounded derived category of an algebra or a scheme and we show in particular that the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves over a variety has a finite dimension.

We introduce cohomologically triangulated categories as triples (A,t,▽) given by an additive category A, an additive equivalence t:AA and a cohomology class ▽ in the translation cohomology H3(A,t). A stable homotopy theory C with A = HoC yields such a triple and the class of distinguished triangles in A is deduced from ▽.

We consider smooth actions of totally disconnected groups on simplicial complexes and compare different equivariant cohomology groups associated to such actions. Our main result is that the bivariant equivariant cohomology theory introduced by Baum and Schneider can be described using equivariant periodic cyclic homology. This provides a new approach to the construction of Baum and Schneider as well as a computation of equivariant periodic cyclic homology for a natural class of examples. In addition we discuss the relation between cosheaf homology and equivariant Bredon homology. Since the theory of Baum and Schneider generalizes cosheaf homology we finally see that all these approaches to equivariant cohomology for totally disconnected groups are closely related.

This paper is comprised of two related parts. First we discuss which k-graph algebras have faithful traces. We characterise the existence of a faithful semifinite lower-semicontinuous gauge-invariant trace on C* (Λ) in terms of the existence of a faithful graph trace on Λ.

Second, for k-graphs with faithful gauge invariant trace, we construct a smooth (k,∞)-summable semifinite spectral triple. We use the semifinite local index theorem to compute the pairing with K-theory. This numerical pairing can be obtained by applying the trace to a KK-pairing with values in the K-theory of the fixed point algebra of the Tk action. As with graph algebras, the index pairing is an invariant for a finer structure than the isomorphism class of the algebra.

The Guillemin–Sternberg conjecture states that “quantisation commutes with reduction” in a specific technical setting. So far, this conjecture has almost exclusively been stated and proved for compact Lie groups G acting on compact symplectic manifolds, and, largely due to the use of Spinc Dirac operator techniques, has reached a high degree of perfection under these compactness assumptions. In this paper we formulate an appropriate Guillemin–Sternberg conjecture in the general case, under the main assumptions that the Lie group action is proper and cocompact. This formulation is motivated by our interpretation of the “quantisation commuates with reduction” phenomenon as a special case of the functoriality of quantisation, and uses equivariant K-homology and the K-theory of the group C*-algebra C*(G) in a crucial way. For example, the equivariant index – which in the compact case takes values in the representation ring R(G) – is replaced by the analytic assembly map – which takes values in K0(C*(G)) – familiar from the Baum–Connes conjecture in noncommutative geometry. Under the usual freeness assumption on the action, we prove our conjecture for all Lie groups G having a discrete normal subgroup Γ with compact quotient G/Γ, but we believe it is valid for all unimodular Lie groups.

We show that the Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture (FIC) of Farrell and Jones corresponding to the stable topological pseudoisotopy functor is true for fundamental groups of a large class of 3-manifolds. We also prove that if the FIC is true for irreducible 3-manifold groups then it is true for all 3-manifold groups. In fact, this follows from a more general result we prove, namely we show that if the FIC is true for each vertex group of a graph of groups with trivial edge groups then the FIC is true for the fundamental group of the graph of groups. This result is part of a program to prove the FIC for the fundamental group of a graph of groups where all the vertex and edge groups satisfy the FIC. A consequence of the first result gives a partial solution to a problem in the problem list of R. Kirby. We also deduce that the FIC is true for a class of virtually P D3-groups.

Another main aspect of this article is to prove the FIC for all Haken 3-manifold groups assuming that the FIC is true for B-groups. By definition a B-group contains a finite index subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact irreducible 3-manifold with incompressible nonempty boundary so that each boundary component is of genus ≥ 2. We also prove the FIC for a large class of B-groups and moreover, using a recent result of L.E. Jones we show that the surjective part of the FIC is true for any B-group.

The natural problem we approach in the present paper is to show how the notion of formally smooth (co)algebra inside monoidal categories can substitute that of (co)separable (co)algebra in the study of splitting bialgebra homomorphisms. This is performed investigating the relation between formal smoothness and separability of certain functors and led to other results related to Hopf algebra theory. Between them we prove that the existence of ad-(co)invariant integrals for a Hopf algebra H is equivalent to the separability of some forgetful functors. In the finite dimensional case, this is also equivalent to the separability of the Drinfeld Double D(H) over H. Hopf algebras which are formally smooth as (co)algebras are characterized. We prove that if π : E → H is a bialgebra surjection with nilpotent kernel such that H is a Hopf algebra which is formally smooth as a K-algebra, then π has a section which is a right H-colinear algebra homomorphism. Moreover, if H is also endowed with an ad-invariant integral, then this section can be chosen to be H-bicolinear. We also deal with the dual case.

This article has two purposes. In [15] we showed that the FIC (Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture for pseudoisotopy functor) for a particular class of 3-manifolds (we denoted this class by C) is the key to prove the FIC for 3-manifold groups in general. And we proved the FIC for the fundamental groups of members of a subclass of C. This result was obtained by showing that the double of any member of this subclass is either Seifert fibered or supports a nonpositively curved metric. In this article we prove that for any M ε C there is a closed 3-manifold P such that either P is Seifert fibered or is a nonpositively curved 3-manifold and π1(M) is a subgroup of π1(P). As a consequence it is obtained that the FIC is true for any B-group (see definition 4.2 in [15]). Therefore, the FIC is true for any Haken 3-manifold group and hence for any 3-manifold group (using the reduction theorem of [15]) provided we assume the Geometrization conjecture. The above result also proves the FIC for a class of 4-manifold groups (see [14]).

The second aspect of this article is to relax a condition in the definition of strongly poly-surface group ([13]) and define a new class of groups (we call them weak strongly poly-surface groups). Then using the above result we prove the FIC for any virtually weak strongly poly-surface group. We also give a corrected proof of the main lemma of [13].

When the index bundle of a longitudinal Dirac type operator is transversely smooth, we define its Chern character in Haefliger cohomology and relate it to the Chern character of the K—theory index. This result gives a concrete connection between the topology of the foliation and the longitudinal index formula. Moreover, the usual spectral assumption on the Novikov-Shubin invariants of the operator is improved.

Let X be a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve defined over a field k. Assume that X has a k–rational point; fix a k–rational point x ε X. From these data we construct an affine group scheme X defined over the field k as well as a principal X–bundle over the curve X. The group scheme X is given by a ℚ–graded neutral Tannakian category built out of all strongly semistable vector bundles over X. The principal bundle is tautological. Let G be a linear algebraic group, defined over k, that does not admit any nontrivial character which is trivial on the connected component, containing the identity element, of the reduced center of G. Let EG be a strongly semistable principal G–bundle over X. We associate to EG a group scheme M defined over k, which we call the monodromy group scheme of EG, and a principal M–bundle EM over X, which we call the monodromy bundle of EG. The group scheme M is canonically a quotient of X, and EM is the extension of structure group of . The group scheme M is also canonically embedded in the fiber Ad(EG)x over x of the adjoint bundle.

We establish the Thom isomorphism in twisted K-theory for any real vector bundle and develop the push-forward map in twisted K-theory for any differentiable map f : X → Y (not necessarily K-oriented). We also obtain the wrong way functoriality property for the push-forward map in twisted K-theory. For D-branes satisfying Freed-Witten's anomaly cancellation condition in a manifold with a non-trivial B-field, we associate a canonical element in the twisted K-group to get the so-called D-brane charges.

Given a group, it is a basic problem to determine which manifolds can occur as a fixed-point set of a smooth action of this group on a sphere. The current article answers this problem for a family of finite groups including perfect groups and nilpotent Oliver groups. We obtain the answer as an application of a new deleting and inserting theorem which is formulated to delete (or insert) fixed-point sets from (or to) disks with smooth actions of finite groups. One of the keys to the proof is an equivariant interpretation of the surgery theory of S. E. Cappell and J. L. Shaneson, for obtaining homology equivalences.

We provide a bounded rigidity result for uniformly contractible manifolds with bounded geometry and sufficiently slow asymptotic dimension growth. This notion of asymptotic growth is a generalization of Gromov's definition of asymptotic dimension. In particular for these manifolds we prove that the bounded assembly map is an isomorphism. Our result is inspired by the coarse Baum-Connes results of Yu and the development of squeezing structures.

We present the first range result for the total K-theory of C*-algebras. This invariant has been used successfully to classify certain separable, nuclear C*-algebras of real rank zero. Our results complete the classification of the so-called AD algebras of real rank zero.

We give stronger counterexamples to a conjecture of Beilinson.

Let k be a number field and let X be a smooth, projective and geometrically integral k-variety. We show that, if the geometric Néron-Severi group of X is torsion-free, then the Galois cohomology group is finite. Previously this group was only known to have a finite exponent. We also obtain a vanishing theorem for this group, showing in particular that it is trivial if X belongs to a certain class of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. The interest in the above cohomology group stems from its connection to the torsion subgroup of the Chow group CH2(X) of codimension 2 cycles on X. In the last section of the paper we record certain results on curves which must be familiar to all specialists in this area but which we have not formerly seen in print.
