An in situ bulk ultrafine bimodal eutectic Al–Cu–Si composite was synthesized by solidification. This heterostructured composite with microstructural length scale hierarchy in the eutectic microstructure, which combines an ultrafine-scale binary cellular eutectic (α-Al + Al2Cu) and a nanometer-sized anomalous ternary eutectic (α-Al + Al2Cu + Si), exhibits high fracture strength (1.1 ± 0.1 GPa) and large compressive plastic strain (11 ± 2%) at room temperature. The improved compressive plasticity of the bimodal-nanoeutectic composite originates from homogeneous and uniform distribution of inhomogeneous plastic deformation (localized shear bands), together with strong interaction between shear bands in the spatially heterogeneous structure.

The stable superparamagnetic colloidal suspension of chitosan-poly(acrylic acid) (CS-PAA)/Fe3O4 nanoparticles was synthesized by graft copolymerization AA on the surface of CS stabilized Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The size, size distribution, structure, and magnetic properties of the resultant CS-PAA/Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). FE-SEM and TEM showed the spherelike morphology of CS-PAA/Fe3O4 nanoparticles with their diameter ranging from 15 to 60 nm. VSM measurements indicated that CS-PAA/Fe3O4 nanoparticles preserved the superparamagnetism. CS-PAA complex was proved to be a good stabilizer to prepare the well-dispersed suspension of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The stabilizing mechanisms were attributed to the electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. The controlled release of entrapped camptothecin from these magnetic nanoparticles was studied and the release mechanism was analyzed.

Sodium cholesteryl carbonate ester (SCC) was synthesized, and its phase behavior was studied. The chemical structure was assessed by solid-state infrared spectroscopy based on vibration analysis. The wave number at 1705 and 1276 cm−1 corresponds to a carbonyl carbonate and O–C–O stretching of SCC, respectively. Molecular structure of SCC was further investigated with 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The chemical shift, for the carbonyl carbonate resonance appeared at 155.5 ppm. A molecular mass of SCC was at m/z of 452. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), video-enhanced microscopy (VEM) together with polarized light microscopy, and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) were used to characterize the phase behavior as a function of temperature of SCC. Liquid crystalline phase was formed with SCC. Based on the thermal properties and x-ray diffraction, it appears that SCC forms a structure analogous to the type II monolayer structure observed with cholesterol esters.

In a carbon-free economy, nuclear power will surely play a fundamental role as a clean and cost-competitive energy source. However, new-generation nuclear concepts involve temperature and irradiation conditions for which no experimental facility exists, making it exceedingly difficult to predict structural materials performance and lifetime. Although the gap with real materials is still large, advances in computing power over the last decade have enabled the development of accurate and efficient numerical algorithms for materials simulations capable of probing the challenging conditions expected in future nuclear environments. One of the most important issues in metallic structural materials is the degradation of their mechanical properties under irradiation. Mechanical properties are intimately related to the glide resistance of dislocations, which can be increased severalfold due to irradiation-produced defects. Here, we present a combined multiscale study of dislocation-irradiation obstacle interactions in a model system (Cu) using atomistic and dislocation dynamics simulations. Scaling laws generalizing material behavior are extracted from our results, which are then compared with experimental measurements of irradiation hardening in Cu, showing good agreement.

The thermal stability and corrosion behavior of the nanostructured layer on commercially pure zirconium, produced by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT), were investigated. It is indicated that the nanograined Zr is stable at annealing temperatures up to 650 °C, above which significant grain growth occurs and the grain size shows parabolic relationship with annealing time. The activation energy for grain growth of the nanograined Zr is 59 kJ/mol at 750–850 °C, and the grain growth is dominated by grain-boundary diffusion. The as-SMATed nanograined Zr exhibits higher corrosion resistance than the 550–750 °C annealed SMATed Zr and the unSMATed coarse-grained Zr. It is indicated that the corrosion resistance of Zr tends to increase with the reduction of grain size, which is related to the dilution of segregated impurities at grain boundaries due to grain refinement and the formation of passive protection film.

Sm3+, Ce3+ codoped Al2O3–La2O3–SiO2 glasses were prepared and their luminescence properties were characterized. Blue-cyan to orange-red tunable luminescence was observed from these glasses with different excitation wavelengths ranging from 385 to 410 nm. White light emission with internal luminescence efficiency 42% has been observed using commercially available purple light-emitting-diode excitation. The energy transfer between Ce3+ and Sm3+ has also been investigated from fluorescence decay curves and spectral properties.

The thermoelectric properties of Nb-doped Zn4Sb3 compounds, (Zn1–xNbx)4Sb3 (x = 0, 0.005, and 0.01), were investigated at temperatures ranging from 300 to 685 K. The results showed that by substituting Zn with Nb, the thermal conductivities of all the Nb-doped compounds were lower than that of the pristine β-Zn4Sb3. Among the compounds studied, the lightly substituted (Zn0.995Nb0.005)4Sb3 compound exhibited the best thermoelectric performance due to the improvement in both its electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity. Its figure of merit, ZT, was greater than the undoped Zn4Sb3 compound for the temperature range investigated. In particular, the ZT of (Zn0.995Nb0.005)4Sb3 reached a value of 1.1 at 680 K, which was 69% greater than that of the undoped Zn4Sb3 obtained in this study.

Novel ultrafine eutectic composites containing structural and spatial heterogeneities have been systematically developed in an Mg–Cu–Zn ternary system. Microstructural investigations of the ultrafine eutectic composites revealed that the bimodal eutectic structure consists of a mixture of cellular-type fine (α-Mg + MgZn2) and anomalous-type coarse (α-Mg + MgZn2 + MgCuZn) eutectic structures. An Mg72Cu5Zn23 alloy composed of the bimodal eutectic structure without micron-scale α-Mg dendrites presents a strong improvement of yield strength up to 455 MPa with a decent plastic strain of 5%. The rotation of the bimodal eutectic colony along the interfaces is considered to be an effective way to dissipate the stress localization thus enhancing the macroscopic plasticity.

The work-hardening mechanisms of the Ti60Cu14Ni12Sn4Nb10 nanocomposite alloy were studied. This material is composed of micrometer-sized dendrites embedded in a nanostructured eutectic matrix and a CuTi2 intermetallic phase. Our study shows that, in the as-quenched state, the nanostructured eutectic matrix behaves softer than the dendrites. During mechanical deformation, both the dendrites and the eutectic matrix harden, whereas the hardness of the CuTi2 intermetallic phase remains unaltered. The high strength of the dendrites is caused by the interplay between solid solution hardening and dislocation networks during plastic flow. Interestingly, the mechanical hardening of the nanoeutectic matrix is also assisted by a martensitic transformation of the NiTi phase. Transmission electron microscopy studies clearly show that the martensitic transformation of this phase is accompanied with grain size refinement, which also plays a role in the deformation-induced mechanical hardening.

The free corrosion behavior and the anodic passivation ability of the bulk glassy (Fe44.3Cr5Co5Mo12.8Mn11.2C15.8B5.9)98.5Y1.5 alloy were fundamentally analyzed. Electrochemical tests were performed in aqueous solutions with pH values in the interval 0.3–14. Corrosion current densities are below 3 μA/cm2 in the entire studied pH interval; compared with commercial grade steels, for example, X210Cr12 steel, the glassy alloy has lower corrosion rates in acidic electrolytes and higher in basic solutions. The alloy exhibits high dissolution rates upon anodic polarization in acidic environments, but with increasing pH values it tends to form passive layers showing the lowest passive current density at pH 11. The passive layers consist mainly of Fe and Cr oxides. There is a strong variation of the passive layer structure and composition with pH. The protective effect of the grown surface layers is negatively influenced by sulfate ions.

We present a blunt mechanism to explain the serrated flow behavior and slight “work hardening” at the beginning of yielding during the compression of metallic glass, which is in line with the piling-up of parallel shear bands on the fracture surface with a gradually increasing space from the edge of surface to inside. Meanwhile, two intrinsic parameters, i.e., strength intensity of blunt behavior, , and global work-hardening sensitivity exponent, , are introduced to characterize the blunt effect on the net increase in flow stress or work-hardening behavior of metallic glass.

Inorganic potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) is widely known for its value as a nonlinear optical material. In this study, pure and l-arginine–doped KDP single crystals were grown by the slow solvent evaporation technique and further subjected to infrared absorption and Raman studies for the confirmation of chemical group functionalization and possible bonding between the organic and inorganic materials. The appearance in the infrared absorption spectra of additional vibrational lines, which mostly originate from disturbed N–H, C–H, and C–N bonds of the l-arginine–doped salt, confirm the interaction between KDP and the organic material. This affirmation is supported by more evidence from Raman measurements, where the disappearance of NH vibrations of the amino group is observed. We are thus led to the possibility of hydrogen bonding primarily between the nucleophilic O− of the phosphate unit of KDP and the amino group of the l-arginine.

The reinforcing effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are investigated for aluminum matrix composites. The composites present a strong bonding between CNTs and the aluminum matrix using a controlled mechanical milling process, producing a network structure of aluminum atoms around CNTs. At the same time, CNTs that are dispersed during the milling process can be located inside aluminum powders, thereby providing an easy consolidation route via thermomechanical processes. A composite containing 4.5 vol% multiwalled CNTs exhibits a yield strength of 620 MPa and fracture toughness of 61 MPa·mm1/2, the values of which are nearly 15 and seven times higher than those of the corresponding starting aluminum, respectively.

The effect of prestrain on microstructure and mechanical behavior of aged Ti–10V–2Fe–3Al alloy was investigated. The results showed that prestrain caused the tensile strength to decrease by 5%, but the elongation to fracture significantly improved by about 200%, in comparison with the unstrained samples, using a much shorter aging time. Transmission electron microscopy investigations showed that nano-sized alpha (α) particles homogeneously precipitated in the beta (β) matrix, and continuous α films formed along grain boundaries in the unstrained and aged samples. However, in the prestrained samples, the coarse stress induced martensite laths decomposed into α- and β-phases in the form of alternately arranged plates, which suppressed formation of the continuous grain boundary α films during aging. The hardness of the prestrained samples was lower than that of the unstrained samples after the same aging treatments. The enhancement of ductility can be mainly attributed to the suppression of grain boundary α films and the reduced hardness in prestrained samples.

Well-ordered nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates have been prepared on aluminum substrates by a two-step anodization process. A voltage-controlled branching method was successfully used to thin the barrier layer of the AAO template. The nanostructures of the pores, the branched subpores, and the barrier layer in the AAO template were studied in association with the anodization process and barrier layer thinning methods. Results demonstrate the voltage-controlled branching method is a facile and effective way to thin the barrier layer. Uniform silver nanowires can be easily fabricated using alternating current (ac) electrodeposition into the pores of AAO after redressing the barrier layer.

Two Fe-Al-Ti alloys with coherent αFe,Al (A2) + Fe2AlTi (L21) microstructures have been produced and the evolution of the microstructure with aging time has been studied by light optical and scanning electron microscopy and hardness measurements. The compressive flow strength, creep properties, brittle-to-ductile-transition temperatures (BDTT), and oxidation behavior of the alloys have been evaluated. The results show that the investigated alloys show good flow strength, high creep resistance, and good oxidation resistance. However, their BDDT is high compared to binary Fe-Al-based alloys and compared to other Fe-Al-Ti alloys no increase in creep resistance was achieved by generating coherent microstructures. The latter effect is due to the breakup of the coherent microstructures when the temperature varies because the compositions and consequently the volume fractions of the phases vary markedly depending on temperature.

Bulk NaYF4:Yb,Er particles (∼1.4 μm particle size) were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. As-synthesized particles were subsequently ball milled to three average particle sizes, namely, ∼260 nm, 160 nm, and 100 nm. The x-ray diffraction pattern showed an hcp phase for as-synthesized and ball-milled particles with a predominant (100) peak. Room temperature emission spectra showed no size dependent peak shifts or peak broadening. The intensities of both green and red emissions decreased with increasing milling time. Segregation of Er ions was detected on the surfaces of milled particle that reduced the sensitizer-activator transition probability, resulting in decreased emission intensities. The green-to-red emission ratio was correlated to the surface enrichment of Er, which affected the cross-relaxation of luminescence dynamics.

This article presents an experimental procedure to perform highly localized compression tests on nanoscale structures/features, such as nanospheres and nanopillars, via standard nanoindentation equipment. Current manufacturing capabilities, such as focused ion beam (FIB), lend themselves well to the creation of micron-spaced nanostructures, but it is fundamental to target an individual instance with little or no damage to the surrounding ones. The procedure successfully addresses the problem of locating and testing purposely designed nanostructures of order of 50 nm or less. The technique is illustrated for the case of closely spaced arrays of nanopillars, which were successfully manufactured, characterized, and tested through several pieces of equipment. For the purposes of compression, along with a traditional Berkovich tip, a new multifunctional (MF) tip was devised. This last tip is endowed with a complex contact geometry enabling both atomic force microscope (AFM) scanning and flat punch compression of the nanostructure. The levels of accuracy in tip positioning as well as robustness to alignment errors are unprecedented in comparison with previous in situ compression tests. As a consequence, the MF tip becomes a versatile tool that can be used beyond uniform compression. As an example, ancillary shear tests in controlled conditions are reported. Such results may lay the bases for metal-forming processes at the nanoscale, such as nanoforging or cutting operations, which are relevant to MEMS design and manufacturing.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) investigations have been carried out to decode the influence of stacking-fault energy (SFE) on the accommodation of large shear deformation in Cu-Al alloys subjected to one-pass equal-channel angular pressing. XRD results exhibit that the microstrain and density of dislocations initially increased with the reduction in the SFE, whereas they sharply decreased with a further decrease in SFE. By systematic TEM observations, we noticed that the accommodation mechanism of intense shear strain was gradually transformed from dislocation slip to deformation twin when SFE was lowered. Meanwhile, twin intersections and internal twins were also observed in the Cu-Al alloy with extremely low SFE. Due to the large external plastic deformation, microscale shear bands, as an inherent deformation mechanism, are increasingly significant to help carry the high local plasticity because low SFE facilitates the formation of shear bands.

Synthesis of Pb(Zr1–xTix)O3 (PZT) on a single substrate using a high-throughput molecular-beam epitaxy technique was demonstrated. In situ synthesis of crystalline PZT at elevated substrate temperatures could not be achieved, as reevaporation of Pb (PbO) occurred and the partial pressure of O2 was insufficient to prevent formation of a PbPtx phase during deposition. Instead, ex situ postdeposition annealing was performed on PZT deposited at room temperature. Dense single phase PZT was prepared with a compositional range of 0.1 > x > 0.9, for film thicknesses up to 800 nm. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the grain size increased from 50 nm to ∼0.5 μm with increasing Zr-concentration and became more columnar. Raman, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy results revealed a morphotropic phase boundary between rhombohedral and tetragonal phases occurred at x ∼0.4 rather than at x = 0.47 in bulk ceramics. This was attributed to clamping arising from mismatch in thermal expansion between the film and substrate.
