We give a simpler and refined proof of some blow-up results of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the Navier–Stokes equations of compressible, viscous and heat-conducting fluids in arbitrary space dimensions. Our main results reveal that smooth solutions with compactly supported initial density will blow up in finite time, and that if the initial density decays at infinity in space, then there is no global solution for which the velocity decays as the reciprocal of the elapsed time.

The relation between the fractional integral operator and the fractional maximal operator is investigated in the framework of Morrey spaces. Applications to the Fefferman–Phong and the Olsen inequalities are also included.

We prove that the category of boolean inverse monoids is dually equivalent to the category of boolean groupoids. This generalizes the classical Stone duality between boolean algebras and boolean spaces. As an instance of this duality, we show that the boolean inverse monoid Cn associated with the Cuntz groupoid Gn is the strong orthogonal completion of the polycyclic (or Cuntz) monoid Pn. The group of units of Cn is the Thompson group Vn,1.

Let X be a countable discrete abelian group with automorphism group Aut(X). Let ξ1 and ξ2 be independent X-valued random variables with distributions μ1 and μ2, respectively. Suppose that α1,α2,β1,β2∈Aut(X) and β1α−11±β2α−12∈Aut(X). Assuming that the conditional distribution of the linear form L2 given L1 is symmetric, where L2=β1ξ1+β2ξ2 and L1=α1ξ1+α2ξ2, we describe all possibilities for the μj. This is a group-theoretic analogue of Heyde’s characterization of Gaussian distributions on the real line.

Extending previous results of the first author, some new estimates are obtained for maximal operators of Schrödinger type with a complex parameter.

We give a description of the continuity ideals and the kernels of homomorphisms from the algebras of continuous functions on locally compact spaces into Banach algebras. We also construct families of prime ideals satisfying a certain intriguing property in the algebras of continuous functions.

When p is a prime number, and k1,…,kt are natural numbers with 1≤k1<k2<⋯<kt<p, we show that the simultaneous congruences ∑ t1xkji≡∑ t1ykjimod p (1≤j≤t) possess at most k1⋯ktpt solutions with 1≤xi,yi≤p (1≤i≤t). Analogous conclusions are provided when one or more of the exponents ki is negative.

Following R. A. Rankin’s method, D. Zagier computed the nth Rankin–Cohen bracket of a modular form g of weight k1 with the Eisenstein series of weight k2, computed the inner product of this Rankin–Cohen bracket with a cusp form f of weight k=k1+k2+2n and showed that this inner product gives, up to a constant, the special value of the Rankin–Selberg convolution of f and g. This result was generalized to Jacobi forms of degree 1 by Y. Choie and W. Kohnen. In this paper, we generalize this result to Jacobi forms defined over ℋ×ℂ(g,1).

Let S be a Riemann surface of type (p,n) with 3p+n>4 and n≥1. We investigate products of some pseudo-Anosov maps θ and Dehn twists tα on S, and prove that under certain conditions the products tkα∘θ are pseudo-Anosov for all integers k. We also give examples that show that tkα∘θ are not pseudo-Anosov for some integers k.

A graph is s-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on s-arcs but not on (s+1)-arcs in the graph. Let X be a connected tetravalent s-transitive graph of order twice a prime power. In this paper it is shown that s=1,2,3 or 4. Furthermore, if s=2, then X is a normal cover of one of the following graphs: the 4-cube, the complete graph of order 5, the complete bipartite graph K5,5 minus a 1-factor, or K7,7 minus a point-hyperplane incidence graph of the three-dimensional projective geometry PG(2,2); if s=3, then X is a normal cover of the complete bipartite graph of order 4; if s=4, then X is a normal cover of the point-hyperplane incidence graph of the three-dimensional projective geometry PG(2,3). As an application, we classify the tetravalent s-transitive graphs of order 2p2 for prime p.
