We show that if G is a finitely generated profinite group such that [x1, x2, …, xk] is Engel for any x1, x2, …, xk ∈ G, then γ(G) is locally nilpotent, and if [x1, x2, …, xk] has finite order for any x1, x2, …, xk ∈ G then, under some additional assumptions, γk(G) is locally finite.

The structure of finite groups in which permutability is transitive (PT-groups) is studied in detail. In particular a finite PT-group has simple chief factors and the p-chief factors fall into at most two isomorphism classes. The structure of finite T-groups, that is, groups in which normality is transitive, is also discussed, as is that of groups generated by subnormal or normal PT-subgroups.

Properties such as automaticity, growth and decidability are investigated for the class of finitely generated semigroups which have regular sets of unique normal forms. Knowledge obtained is then applied to the task of demonstrating that a class of semigroups derived from free inverse semigroups under certain closure operations is not automatic.

By blending techniques from set theory and algebraic topology we investigate the order of any homeomorphism of the nth power of the long ray or long line L having finite order, finding all possible orders when n = 1, 2, 3 or 4 in the first case and when n = 1 or 2 in the second. We also show that all finite powers of L are acyclic with respect to Alexander-Spanier cohomology.

Let X be a locally convex space. Kluvánek associated to each X-valued countably additive vector measure a conical measure on X; this can also be done for finitely additive bounded vector measures. We prove that every conical measure u on X, whose associated zonoform Ku is contained in X, is associated to a bounded additive vector measure σ(u) defined on X, and satisfying σ(u)(H) ∈ H, for every finite intersection H of closed half-spaces. When X is a complete weak space, we prove that σ(u) is countably additive. This allows us to recover two results of Kluvánek: for any X, every conical measure u on it with Ku ⊆ X is associated to a countably additive X-valued vector measure; and every conical measure on a complete weak space is localizable. When X is a Banach space, we prove that σ(u) is countably additive if and only if u is the conical measure associated to a Pettis differentiable vector measure.

A holomorphic map ψ of the unit disk ito itself induces an operator Cψ on holomorphic functions by composition. We characterize bounded and compact composition operators Cψ on Qp spaces, which coincide with the BMOA for p = 1 and Bloch spaces for p > 1. We also give boundedness and compactness characterizations of Cψ from analytic function space X to Qp spaces, X = Dirichlet space D, Bloch space B or B0 = {f: f′ ∈ H∞}.

We study DeLeeuw type theorems for certain multilinear operators on the Lebesgue spaces and on the Hardy spaces. As applications, on the torus we obtain an analog of Lacey—Thiele's theorem on the bilinear Hilbert transform, as well as analogies of some recent theorems on multilinear singular integrals by Kenig—Stein and by Grafakos—Torres.

In this paper we give a complete description of diameter-preserving linear bijections on the space of affine continuous functions on a compact convex set whose extreme points are split faces. We also give a description of such maps on function algebras considered on their maximal ideal space. We formulate and prove similar results for spaces of vector-valued functions.

We study the perturbation of the generalized Drazin inverse for the elements of Banach algebras and bounded linear operators on Banach space. This work, among other things, extends the results obtained by the second author and Guorong Wang on the Drazin inverse for matrices.

This paper gives a complete classification of essentially commutative C*-algebras whose essential spectrum is homeomorphic to S2n−1 by their characteristic numbers. Let 1, 2 be such two C*-algebras; then they are C*-isomorphic if and only if they have the same n-th characteristic number. Furthermore, let γn() = m then is C*-isomorphic to C*(Mzl, …, Mzn) if m = 0, is C*-isomorphic C*(Tz1, …, Tzn−1, Tznm) if m ≠ 0. Some examples are given to show applications of the classfication theorem. We finally remark that the proof of the theorem depends on a construction of a complete system of representatives of Ext(S2n−1).

A subset F of an ordered set X is a fibre of X if F intersects every maximal antichain of X. We find a lower bound on the function ƒ (D), the minimum fibre size in the distributive lattice D, in terms of the size of D. In particular, we prove that there is a constant c such that In the process we show that minimum fibre size is a monotone property for a certain class of distributive lattices. This fact depends upon being able to split every maximal antichain of this class of distributive lattices into two parts so that the lattice is the union of the upset of one part and the downset of the other.

We find a basis for the universal punctured even distribution and then a basis for the cyclotomic units over function fields.

This note gives a necessary condition, in terms of graded actions, for an inverse semigroup to be a full amalgam. Under a mild additional hypothesis, the condition becomes sufficient.

In this paper we construct a family of variational families for a Legendrian embedding, into the 1-jet bundle of a closed manifold, that can be obtained from the zero section through Legendrian embdeddings, by discretising the action functional. We compute the second variation of a generating funciton obtained as above at a nondegenerate critical point and prove a formula relating the signature of the second variation to the Maslov index as the mesh goes to zero. We use this to prove a generlisation of the Morse inequalities thus refining a theorem of Chekanov.

Various properties of continuity for the class of lower semicontinuous convex functions are considered and dual characterizations are established. In particular, it is shown that the restriction of a lower semicontinuous convex function to its domain (respectively, domain of subdifferentiability) is continuous if and only if its subdifferential is strongly cyclically monotone (respectively, σ-cyclically monotone).

An asymptotic estimate is derived for the expected number of extrema of a polynomial whose independent normal coefficients possess non-equal non-zero mean values. A result is presented that generalizes in terms of normal processes the analytical device used for construction of similar asymptotic estimates for random polynomials with normal coefficients.

We investigate certain norm and continuity conditions that provide us with ‘uniqe Hahn-Banch Theorems’ from (nc0) to (nℓ∞) and from N(nE) to N(nE″). We show that there is a unique norm-preserving extension for norm-attaining 2-homogeneous polynomials on complex c0 to ℓ∈ but there is no unique norm-preserving extension from (3c0) to (3ℓ∈).

In a group G, um (G) denotes the subgroup of the elements which normalize every subnormal subgroup of G with defect at most m. The m-Wielandt series of G is then defined in a natural way. G is said to have finite m-Wielandt length if it coincides with a term of its m-Wielandt series. We investigate the structure of infinite groups with finite m-Wielandt length.

In this paper we treat two non-linear differential equations which come from complex dynamics theory. We give a complete classification of the equations when they possess transcendental meromorphic solutions.

We investigate a locally full HNN extension of an inverse semigroup. A normal form theorem is obtained and applied to the word problem. We construct a tree and show that a maximal subgroup of a locally full HNN extension acts on the tree without inversion. Bass-Serre theory is employed to obtain a group presentation of the maximal subgroup as a fundamental group of a certain graph of groups associated with the D-structure of the original semigroup.
