Female Eledone cirrhosa held in aquarium conditions for periods of time of five daysand over show relatively enlarged ovary sizes. Values for ovary index considerably exceed thoseof freshly caught animals and the incidence of the final stage of maturity, in which eggs pack the oviducts, is greater. A comparison of maturity indices for fresh and aquarium males was inconclusive. The range of factors associated with aquarium conditions is briefly reviewed and it is concluded that studies of cephalopod reproductive maturation must distinguish fresh and aquarium animals.

Introduction

External factors effective in inducing sexual maturation in cephalopods have been suggested several times. The influence of the absence of light has been implicated since the experiments of Wells & Wells (1959) showed that blinded Octopus vulgar is matured precociously. An effect of short day length in stimulating the optic glands of Sepia has been found by Defretin & Richard (1967) and Richard (1967) but this is not clearly the case for Octopus (Buckley, 1977). Octopuses kept in aquarium conditions for lengthy periods are said to have larger relative gonad sizes than those fresh from the sea (Wells & Wells, 1975). One of the factors associated with aquarium conditions is often a degree of starvation, and this circumstance alone is held to be a factor in inducing precocious sexual maturation in Eledone (Mangold & Boucher-Rodoni, 1973).

In the course of recent studies on the growth and reproduction of Eledone cirrhosa from the North Sea (Boyle & Knobloch, 1982,1983,1984) animals which had remained in aquarium conditions for 5 days or over were separated from the analysis.

The reproductive biology of Psammobatis lentiginosa was studied in San Matías Gulf (Patagonia, south-west Atlantic). A total of 1033 skates was analysed, total length ranged from 17 to 52 cm for females and from 13 to 55 cm for males. Total length–total weights relationships differed between sexes, with TW = 0.005 × TL3.02 for females and TW = 0.005 × TL2.97 for males. The overall sex-ratio was 1:1. In females, the L50% was 41.06 cm, in males the L50% was 41.38 cm. The mean number of yolked oocytes per skate was 4.22 (±2.41). The mean number of yolked oocytes and the length of the female were linearly related. The diameter maximum of yolked oocytes was 24 mm. The species exhibited a continuous reproductive cycle throughout the year, with a peak of egg-case production during autumn that was synchronous with maximum values of the epididymis and uterus indices. This is the first record of a reproductive aggregation for P. lentiginosa in San Matías Gulf, North Patagonia. This finding together with its continuous presence around the year, suggest that this area is the main distribution area of P. lentiginosa in the south-west Atlantic.

A new contribution on spatial and seasonal variability of physico-chemical parameters of the Golfo San Jorge benthic system from autumn 2001 through summer to 2002 is presented. Temperature, salinity, density, oxygen content and chlorophyll-a in bottom water as well as concentration of total organic matter, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophyll-a and phaeopigments in sediments were analysed. The origin and nutritional value of the deposited organic matter were also assessed. The results reflect the existence of: (1) a typical temperate water seasonal cycle; (2) a bimodal cycle in the phytoplanktonic production; and (3) seasonal variations in the chemical variables and in organic matter origin in sediments.

Three sectors which geographically correspond with those identified in previous studies were defined: (1) the inner area of the gulf; (2) the areas next to the north and south extremes; and (3) the coastal and south-east part.

The population dynamics of the stout reef octopus, Octopus insularis fished with longlines of pots in mid-shelf waters of north-eastern Brazil was studied based on fishermen's logbooks and onboard monthly fishing trips from September 2009 to August 2010. Specimens marked with oxytetracycline kept in tanks for up to 21 days provided evidence of the daily deposition of growth increments in the lateral wall of the upper beaks. Sampled specimens weighed 50–1280 g and had 43–172 daily growth increments. Compared with congeneric species from higher latitudes, O. insularis grows faster and has a shorter longevity in the north-eastern Brazil tropical environment. Total catches and catch-per-unit effort were substantially higher in the dry season, with less wind and cooler temperatures. The presence of larger specimens was seasonal, correlated with the chlorophyll-a levels recorded six months earlier. The year-round presence of mature females and males, spawned females, and egg masses attached to the pots, were considered evidence of migration of small and young specimens from coastal areas towards the 20–40 m depth range for reproduction. Annual landings attained ~200 tonnes (2005–2010). Although recent landing statistics are missing, fishermen interviewed in 2021 claimed that the fishery was still profitable. It is suggested that, despite the lack of management, the fast growth, year-round reproduction and limited market for this relatively small octopus, prevented the fishery from collapse and reinforces the current view of the high resilience of cephalopod fisheries.

Distichopora robusta, the first shallow-water stylasterid coral from the tropical eastern Pacific, is described from the west coast of Panama. The new species is distinguished from all species of Distichopora described thus far by having robust branches and poorly defined pore rows.

Sea water originally at pH8·2 became as alkaline as pH9·4 by the photosynthetic action of Ulva in removing carbonic acid. This degree of alkalinity did not prove injurious to Ulva, but exposure to it for two and a half hours at 27° C. sufficed to increase the permeability of the superficial cells of Ceramium rubrum irreversibly and fatally. Similar though less rapid changes brought about the death of numerous Vorticellæ epiphytic on Ceramium. The criteria for living cells were permeability to neutral red and impermeability to brom cresol purple. Dead cells do not retain neutral red specifically and are permeable to brom cresol purple.

It is suggested that the above facts have a bearing upon the distribution of these and similar algæ upon the shore.

A single-season mark-recapture experiment was carried out on queen scallops, Aequipecten opercularis (L.) (Bivalvia: Pectinidae) to assess the suitability of the technique for estimating population sizes and mortality rates of exploited populations. Tag-loss and tagging-induced mortality were 7.7% and 11.9% respectively. Non-reporting was negligible.

In a single fishing season (June-December 1989) 25.4% of releases were recaptured alive. Mean density of commercial-sized queens was estimated as 0.47 m−2 over the fishing ground. Instantaneous rates of total (Z), fishing (F) and-natural (M) mortality, calculated from the monthly decline of recaptures during the fishing season, were 0.;41,0.21 and 0.20 per month respectively. The calculated M is very high but includes non-yield or indirect fishing mortality. Analysis of the age-frequency distribution of queens from an adjacent, largely unexploited, area indicated an M of only 0.036 per month (0.43 y−1). There was some indication of an increase in M in older year classes, associated with senescence.

The mark-recapture methodology used here is suitable for this species, but single-release experiments place too much reliance on commercial catch-statistics.

The population structure of the common shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) in British waters is investigated. Samples were collected from 31 sites along the coasts of England, Wales, Holland, Belgium and France. Using a morphometric analysis it is concluded that English and Welsh waters hold six distinct populations. Animals belonging to the same population are found on the opposing English and continental coasts in the southern North Sea and English Channel which indicates that the avoidance of offshore waters is not isolating the shrimps. The boundaries between the populations are found to correspond with the boundaries between major plankton assemblages. It is suggested that the populations are isolated by the reduced dispersal of the planktonic larvae across fronts where bodies of water with different physical properties meet but incompletely mix.

Powers, working on some marine fishes, arrived at the important conclusion that the ability of fishes to absorb oxygen at low pressures is more or less dependent upon the hydrogen ion concentration of the water. His method of research was briefly as follows: a fish was placed in a two-quart jar filled with water, which was closed airtight with a rubber stopper. The pH and the oxygen determinations were made immediately after all the movements of the fish had ceased. The amount of oxygen left at death represented, according to Powers, the pressure below which the fish at the particular pH could not extract any more oxygen from water. Powers did not control the amount of oxygen at the beginning of an experiment; he says, “it was always sufficiently high so that the fish did not at first suffer from oxygen want.”

The stomachs of 427 giant red shrimps, Aristaeomorpha foliacea, caught in the Strait of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea) during four seasonal surveys contained 73 cephalopods, or 8·6% of prey. Cephalopods ranked third as prey following crustaceans (49·2% of prey) and bony fish (20·5% of prey). The following cephalopod taxa were identified: Heteroteuthis dispar, Sepietta oweniana, Brachioteuthis sp., Abraliopsis morisii, Onychoteuthis banksii, Ancistroteuthis lichtensteinii, Histioteuthis bonnellii, H. reversa, Taoniinae sp., Octopodidae sp.; the dominant species was Heteroteuthis dispar (13 specimens). All remains pertained to small and very small specimens, including early juveniles; rostral length of 13 beaks (=17·8% of cephalopods) measured <1 mm. Early juveniles were found in stomach contents only in summer and winter. Cephalopod size was found to be positively correlated to shrimp size. No seasonal nor predator sex-related differences were found in the quantities and frequencies of ingested cephalopods.

The sound characteristics and the sound producing system in silver sweeper, Pempheris schwenkii, are described. The main frequency component of the emitted sounds was 100–300 Hz, the mean duration of the sounds being 56 ms. The sounds were produced by paired extrinsic sonic muscles vibrating the swimbladder. The sonic muscles originated on the pterotic bones and extended to the anterodorsal surface of the swimbladder, and were innervated by two branches of the occipital nerves. Moreover significant sexual dimorphism of the sonic muscles was observed, those in males being three times as large as in females.

The host-response of the polynoid Polynoë scolopendrina Savigny, commensal with the terebellid Polymnia nebulosa (Montagu), is relatively specific within the family Terebellidae.

Evidence is presented that an unstable or closely bound attractant is present on the outside of the host and perhaps in tube material, but apparently absent in the mucus secreted by the host. Efforts to demonstrate its presence in ground-up whole host resulted in failure.

The polynoid Lepidasthenia argus Hodgson demonstrates a similar specificity of response to its host Amphitrite edwardsi Quatrefages.

The polynoid Harmothoë spinifera Ehlers, commensal with Amphitrite gracilis Grube, responds to the alternate host Polycirrus caliendrum Claparede as strongly as to its own host, and more strongly than to other species of Amphitrite. Likewise, Polynoë scolopendrina, commensal with Polymnia, responds with greater intensity to the alternate host, the eunicid Lysidice ninetta Audouin and Milne-Edwards, than to any non-host terebellid. This behaviour may be i terpreted as evidence that the specificity of at least some single commensal species for hosts which are not closely related to each other may depend upon the production of similar attractants by these hosts.

The responses of three commensal populations of Harmothoe lunulata (Delle Chiaje), commensal respectively with the ophiuroid Acrocnida brachiata (Montagu), the holothurian Leptosynapta inhaerens (O. F. Miiller), and the terebellid Amphitrite johnstoni Malmgren were tested against seven alternate hosts. Each gave maximum response to its own host. However, the population from Acrocnida responded as strongly to Leptosynapta as to its own host, while giving no responses at all to any of the other five.

Many marine annelids are active tube builders. Several polychaete families make agglutinated tubes by fixing sediment particles with specific secretions from their epithelial glands. The fine structure of the tubes of six species of Maldanidae from five genera (Nicomache minor, N. lumbricalis, Maldane sarsi, Praxillella praetermissa, Axiothella catenata, Rhodine gracilior) was examined by scanning electron microscopy. These species exhibit different lifestyles. Nicomache minor and N. lumbricalis inhabit massive hard tubes attached to stones. Other species live in the sediment, Rhodine in rigid organic tubes, Praxillella, Axiothella and Maldane in sand or mud tubes. All the examined maldanid tubes have a similar basic structure. The inner sheath of the tubes is made of a hardened organic lining secreted by the worm. Fibres from the inner sheath fasten sediment particles of the agglutinated layer. In Nicomache the tube surface is covered with a fibrous outer layer. All tube layers contain variously arranged organic fibres, which form a 3D network in the agglutinated layer and fabric-like linings in the inner sheath and outer layer. The tubes of Maldanidae may be important for taxonomy, and useful for identification of fossils.

From April 3rd to May 17th of this year I occupied a table at the Plymouth Laboratory, to study the embryology of Teleosteans. As some of the fish in the flat-fish tank were known to be spawning, a net was fitted to the overflow channel into the adjoining tank. By the kind permission of the Director I examined this net daily, and, as a rule, a number of times a day, so that I obtained a pretty complete record of the spawning of the fish in this tank during the period mentioned.

The population biology, life history parameters and diet of the shorthead drum Larimus breviceps were assessed in Caraguatatuba Bight, a shallow non-estuarine environment. Two homogeneous areas, South and North, were selected, avoiding major sources of continental waters. Monthly from October 2003 to October 2004, three random samples were taken by trawling from 800 to 1600 m outward from the waterline. Larimus breviceps was the third most abundant species during the study period, and was considerably more abundant from February to May 2004. Smaller individuals were also more abundant during this period, which we therefore considered the main recruitment period of the species. The predominance of individuals of a limited size range (6–12 cm total length) seems to indicate that the area functions as a nursery for L. breviceps, sheltering late-juvenile individuals. This feature complicated the estimation of life history parameters, but by taking into account the peculiarities of the area and the identification of similar modal progressions during the sampling period, we obtained reasonable values for the parameterization of the von Bertalanffy Growth Model (L∞ = 32.25 cm, K = 0.72, tmax 4.38 y, Z = 12.104). The total mortality index does not reflect mortality rates only, but also the migration of older individuals to other, probably deeper, areas. The diet was based mainly on Crustacea, specifically Decapoda shrimps, with slight seasonal alterations.

Light adaptive strategies were studied in a comparative analysis of the congeneric seagrass species Zostera muelleri and Zostera marina at two case study areas in New Zealand and Germany. Surveys in intertidal seagrass meadows were conducted from pre-dawn until sunset on days when either low or high tide coincided with noon. The results show marked fluctuations of photophysiology (optimum and effective quantum yield, non-photochemical quenching, cycling of xanthophyll cycle (XC) pigments) over daily and tidal cycles. At both locations, we observed a near complete conversion (de-epoxidation) of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin at times with high irradiance and a rapid and complete re-epoxidation under subsequent lower light conditions. At the New Zealand site we also observed significantly larger XC-pigment pool sizes in seagrass leaves sampled in a week when low tide coincided with noon (larger daily fluence and higher maximum irradiance), compared with leaves sampled in a week when high tide was at noon. This dynamic adjustment of xanthophyll pool size has not been previously reported for intertidal seagrasses. It adds to our understanding of an important adaptive feature in a highly dynamic light environment and to the general ecology and adaptability of seagrasses.

Light microscopy and extracellular electrophysiology were used to investigate eye structure and visual physiology of the hyperiid amphipod Scina crassicornis, a mesopelagic species that emits unusually short-wavelength luminescence (λmax=435–444 nm). The overall eye morphology is most similar to some previously described deep-dwelling amphipods, though not other hyperiids. Electroretinograms suggest that S. crassicornis possesses a relatively sensitive eye with slow temporal dynamics, and a monochromatic visual system (λmax=472 nm). Vision in S. crassicornis is well-suited for life in mesopelagic waters, and its short-wavelength luminescence does not play a role in intraspecific sexual signalling.

Jellyfish display strong population variability. Competitive interactions between fish and jellyfish have been depicted as a major mechanism controlling this variability. Biological associations involving jellyfish are, however, more diverse than predation–prey interactions and remain poorly understood. Parasitic associations in particular may have relevant effects on jellyfish host populations. We studied basic patterns (temporal patterns of parasite intensity–biomass and the distribution pattern of parasites among hosts) of the association between the parasitic anemone Peachia chilensis and its scyphozoan host, Chrysaora plocamia. The mean number of parasites per host (MI) was high (average = 465) and showed significant differences during the pelagic life phase of the medusa. The mean biomass of parasites per host was also significantly different among months but showed a different temporal pattern to that of MI, which may reflect recruitment pulses of parasitic larvae. The mean biomass of P. chilensis per host averaged 56.3 mg ash-free dry mass, which represents a trophic flow of energy probably linking pelagic and benthic food webs. The distribution of parasites among hosts was best fitted to the negative binomial distribution model, as typical for host–parasite systems. We concluded that the parasite-induced host mortality and reduction of fecundity, represented by parasitic castration, is restricted to a few hosts and is therefore under the expected levels that characterize the dynamic equilibrium of host–parasite systems.

Thirty-five specimens of the articulate brachiopod Neorhynchia strebeli were collected from a site at 814 m in the Weddell Sea. This was only the second species of the order Rhynchonellida to be found in Antarctica. Formerly N. strebeli was known solely from abyssal Pacific Ocean localities. A circumantarctic distribution is suggested in addition to the known deep-sea Pacific range. The specimens of this collection showed considerable commissure variation, suggesting that the previously proposed erection of two subspecies on the basis of this character is erroneous, and emphasises the phenotypic plasticity of some articulate brachiopods. The valve lengths and the number of alpha growth rings in the sample showed a normal distribution and a von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to the data: Lt = 23 (1-exp[-0·228t]). If the alpha growth rings were of annual periodicity, the ages attained by the Antarctic N. strebeli of 11 y would be substantially lower than those reported for other Weddell Sea brachiopods. The epibiotic communities occurring on the valves of N. strebeli were impoverished, which is characteristic of deep water Antarctic brachiopods. The few specimens collected with their substratum were attached to small pebbles, but the typical attachment substrata may be different.

On the night of 4–5 August 1984 an unusual fish was captured in a trammel net set in Elbery Cove, Torquay, South Devon, by Mr W. Blackmore. Its captor realizing it was an unusual species forwarded it to Mr A. D. (Tony) Mattacola for identification. Tony Mattacola recognized it as a member of the genus Seriola, and using the works of Berry & Burch (1979) and Randall (1968) tentatively identified it as Seriola rivoliana Valenciennes, 1833, a species which had never hitherto been recognized in northern European seas. The identification of the specimen was confirmed when the specimen was sent to the author at the British Museum (Natural History); register number 1984.10.22.1.
