Television cameras and video equipment are well established as tools in many areas of marine research and have been reviewed by Barnes (1963), Myrberg (1973), Harris (1980), and Holme (1984, 1985). The TV camera is usually mounted on a remote sledge (Machan & Fedra, 1975; Holme & Barrett, 1977) or submersible, often with arrays of lights, and lacks the manoeuvrability that is necessary for many types of detailed survey and behavioural recording. Commercial and industrial uses also demand high-resolution equipment that is often contained in bulky underwater cases capable of operating at great depths and well below that possible by the conventional SCUBA diver. It is not unusual for the equipment to be used in conjunction with external lighting units where natural light levels are too low for the use of ambient light, and is dependent on an external power supply normally situated in the surface support vessel or within a submersible (Sisman, 1982).

This study examines the effect of water temperature on the formation of shell sculpture in young molluscs of the genus Hiatella. The larvae of H. arctica and H. gallicana were maintained under laboratory conditions at different temperature regimes. The animals were reared from late veligers to juveniles with a shell length of 700 μm. The results of the experiment showed that the shell sculpture, which is a diagnostic species character, was developed to various degrees at different temperatures. The larvae of each species grew to juveniles with variously pronounced shell sculptures ranging from a complete absence of sculpturing to its maximum development. The individuals with smooth shells like those of H. gallicana were the most abundant among the molluscs reared at +5°С. At +12°С, all molluscs formed ridges and two rows of long spines in the posterior portion of the shell, which is typical for H. arctica. At +8°С, the molluscs developed various intermediate forms of shell sculpture. It was, therefore, demonstrated that the development and prominence of shell sculpture is determined by environmental temperature. These results are discussed with regards to the validity of using shell sculpture as a taxonomic character for species in the genus Hiatella.

The growth and the reproductive cycle of Littorina littorea were investigated in the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal, a country cited as the southern limit of the species distribution in Europe. Littorina littorea growth is well represented by the von Bertalanffy equation SH=24.6[1-e-0.69(t-0.70)] where SH is the shell height (distance from shell apex to the basis of the aperture measured in mm) and t is the number of winters: after periwinkles have reached a mean SH of 4.6 mm in their first winter they grow progressively to about 14.6 mm, 19.6 mm, 22.1 mm and 23.4 mm in the following four years and they attain the asymptotic mean maximum SH of 24.6 mm at the tenth year if they survive. Ripening of the gonads occurred from October to May but was more intense from December to February, whereas spawning extended from January to May in females and November to May in males. There was a seasonal shedding of the male penis at the end of the breeding season (summer) accompanying regression of the testis.

The relative importance of parental diet/population and larval diet were examined on egg, growth, morphology and biochemistry of Sclerasterias mollis larvae. Adult S. mollis were fed one cockle (Austrovenus stutchburyi) per two animals each week, as a low diet, or two cockles per animal each week, as a high diet. The experiment was run for one year. In addition, two field populations (Otago inshore and offshore) with dissimilar nutritional status (based on the gonad index) were selected. Otago inshore starfish had higher gonad indices and assumed to have better nutritional status. The low and high diet laboratory starfish produced eggs with similar characteristics. Eggs from the low diet laboratory parents had the highest carbohydrate concentration. The eggs from the field parents had higher fertilization rate and lower carbohydrate concentration than eggs from the laboratory parents. The Otago inshore starfish had smaller eggs with a lower carbohydrate concentration than the starfish from Otago offshore. Parents from the laboratory or the field had significant effects on larval growth, morphological phenotypic plasticity (measured by the body length relative to the body width) and development rate. Larvae from Otago offshore parents had highest growth and morphological phenotypic plasticity. Larvae from the low diet laboratory parents and those from Otago inshore had the highest development rate. Larvae from low diet laboratory parents had the highest carbohydrate concentration. Neither the parents nor the larval diet had a significant effect on larval mortality. A higher concentration planktonic diet resulted in higher growth, morphological phenotypic plasticity and development rate. Parents were however more important than larval diet on growth and phenotypic plasticity of the larvae. This study showed that parental nutrition has an important effect on growth, morphological phenotypic plasticity and body composition of S. mollis larvae. The nutritional status of the parents does not influence the larvae through a change in the egg size, protein, lipid, carbohydrate and energy content.

A re-assessment of the rocky sublittoral biota at Hilsea Point Rock in south Devon, UK was undertaken 50 years after the first descriptive surveys. The overall appearance of the fauna and flora in 2003 was much as described in the 1950s but with some species not re-found in 2003 and some species added to the lists from the 1950s.

At the period of sexual reproduction of the rhizocephalan parasite, Sacculina polygenea, the sacculinized crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, can serve as a temporary carrier for juvenile bivalve molluscs, Mytilus trossulus and Hiatella arctica as facultative epibionts. Such epizoans are never found on the crabs without the rhizocephalan externae or scars produced by the externae. The correlation between sacculinization and the bivalve epibionts is presumably due to maternal ‘brooding care’ with altering grooming behaviour of the crabs infested by S. polygenea.

Food is an important factor for the survival of juvenile fish. Knowledge of the diet of co-existing species helps clarify their relationships with each other. A number of Mugilidae species are known to co-exist in estuarine systems, raising the question of whether they compete for food resources. The feeding behaviours of five juvenile Mugilidae species were studied in the estuaries of Strymonikos (North Aegean Sea) using stomach content analysis. It was found that the species Chelon labrosus, Liza saliens and Mugil cephalus presented high feeding activity during summer and autumn and L. ramada and L. aurata during winter and spring. The diet overlap between the species was generally moderate to low and the pair L. saliens – M. cephalus exhibited the highest overlap in Richios estuarine system. The species do not appear to compete for common resources, probably because there is not always a spatiotemporal overlap, enough food is available or they exploit different resources. Four out of the five species exhibited similar patterns of feeding strategies with varying levels of specialization at an individual level and a rather generalized pattern at the population level. This more generalized feeding strategy may permit them to co-exist. Only M. cephalus showed a more specialized feeding behaviour, with a strong preference for microalgae. The absence of a general pattern for the trophic levels according to seasons, sizes or locations, also imply the opportunistic character of the species. Both season and fish size influenced the variation in the diet composition.

We examined habitat, population size-structure, colour dimorphism, reproductive behaviour, arm loss and the relation between arm regeneration to pyloric caeca indices in populations at Whitford Rock (WR) and Port Beach (PB) in January 2009. The sediment was fine sand at WR and a mix of larger particles at PB. Individuals at PB were predominantly orange and more uniform in colour than those at WR, which were predominantly grey. Body size and pyloric caeca index of individuals at WR were greater than those of individuals at PB, indicating the nutritional condition was better at WR. This suggests the quantity or quality of food at WR was better. Organic matter of the pyloric caeca and body wall of intact and regenerating individuals at both sites were similar, indicating loss of an arm did not affect gross proximate composition of the organs. Sea stars with regenerating arms made up 5.4 and 8.4 % of the populations observed. Despite the very small size of the gonads, some individuals were in the pseudocopulatory position, indicating this behaviour occurs even when gametes are not present. In every case observed, the male of the pseudocopulating pair was situated above the female. Given the abundance of this species in nearshore habitats dominated by sediment, it is likely to be ecologically important. However much of the biology and ecology of the species, even its diet, remain unknown. This together with its unusual mode of reproductive behaviour involving pseudocopulation, which is only known from two other species of asteroids, underscore the need for more research on Archaster angulatus.

The present study is the first record of twinning in Delphinus delphis. The first foetus was a female of 72 cm total length which had a curved caudal area. This animal was located in the left uterine horn, very close to the genital aperture. The second foetus was a male of 46 cm total length and its external morphology was deformed. It was located in the uterus and the nose was shorter than the female foetus. Documented incidences of twinning in cetaceans are rare.

A new species of Sphaerodoridae (Annelida: Polychaeta), Sphaerodoropsis solis sp. nov., is described from the Challenger Plateau in the Tasman Sea, south-west Pacific. It is the third species of the genus with ventral macrotubercles and is further characterized by the lack of dorsal papillae and the specific arrangement pattern of ventral papillae. A character indicating sexual dimorphism, that has been observed in three morphologically similar species, S. arctowskyensis Hartmann-Schröder & Rosenfeldt, 1988, S. bisphaeroserialis (Hartmann-Schröder, 1974c), and S. garciaalvarezi Moreira, Cacabelos & Troncoso, 2004, is confirmed for S. solis sp. nov. Besides S. solis sp. nov., S. arctowskyensis and S. parva (Ehlers, 1913) are newly recorded from the Challenger Plateau and the East Campbell Plateau in the south-west Pacific. An updated key for the genus Sphaerodoropsis is provided.

Eight species of Yoldiella (Yoldiella biguttata Allen, Sanders & Hannah, 1995; Yoldiella similis Allen, Sanders & Hannah, 1995; Yoldiella extensa Allen, Sanders & Hannah, 1995; Yoldiella aff. jeffreysi (Hidalgo, 1877); Yoldiella sp.1; Yoldiella sp. 2; Yoldiella sp. 3 and Yoldiella sp. 4) from the continental slope off Rio de Janeiro were used to test if quantitative morphometric measurements of shell shape and hinge plate could effectively discriminate among them. Thirty specimens of each species were sampled, and a total of 25 variables were established and utilized as input data to perform a discriminant analysis. The percentage of correctly classified cases was never less than 80%. The hinge plate variables were always relevant, and the most important one was the width of the posterior hinge plate. On the other hand, shell shape variables, when present, were secondary. Considering that the variation in the shell of Yoldiella species is subtle, and also the findings of this study, we can state that the hinge plate morphometry has good potential to improve species discrimination.

The ultrastructure of spermatogenesis, the euspermatozoa and paraspermatozoa, is investigated in Trophon geversianus. Spermatogenesis follows the general developmental pattern of caenogastropods. Paraspermatid development is characterized by elongation of the cell, concurrent with the appearance of a cytoplasmic elongation at the apex of the cell and the breakdown of the nucleus into small round fragments (caryomerites). Euspermatozoa consist of: a tall, conical acrosomal vesicle (with a invagination); a rod-shaped, highly electron-dense nucleus with an internal axoneme; an elongate midpiece consisting of the axoneme sheathed by helical mitochondrial elements; an elongate glycogen piece; and a short free-tail region. Paraspermatozoa of T. geversianus are vermiform. They contain approximately 12–16 axonemes arranged peripherally, numerous oblong dense vesicles, numerous less dense (round) vesicles, and scattered mitochondria. Most of the euspermatozoal features of T. geversianus are also observed in many neogastropods. However, the presence of the axoneme continuously located inside of the nucleus has not been reported before, and may prove to be a diagnostic feature of the Muricidae.

A male of the new species Stygiopontius senckenbergi belonging to the family Dirivultidae Humes & Dojiri, 1980 (Copepoda: Siphonostomatoida) and endemic to deep-sea hydrothermal vents, is described from a raised fault block structure south of Edison seamount of the New Ireland Fore-Arc system (Papua New Guinea). The copepods were collected in by box-corer during cruise SO-133 of the RV ‘Sonne’ at a depth of 1610–1625 m, 3°19′S 152°35′E. The new species belongs to a group of eight species that are separate from 21 congeners on the basis of setation of legs 1 and 4: the coxa of leg 1 has an inner seta (absent on the others) and the third exopodal segment of leg 4 has three outer spines (instead of two spines). The new species shares with S. pectinatus Humes, 1987 a pectinate maxilliped but differs from it in lacking two pectinate, terminal claw-like setae on the endopod of the antenna.

The vitamin B12 concentration in sea water is so very low that only the most sensitive microbiological assay techniques are likely to be capable of measuring it, but the salt concentration is so high as to be inhibitory to most of the organisms conventionally used for the microbiological assay of the vitamin. Nevertheless, the consideration that vitamin B12 concentration may have an influence on the amounts and types of life present in sea areas has persuaded several investigators to attempt its measurement.

The methods so far employed have each their own advantages and dis-advantages (Droop, 1954, 1955; Lewin, 1954; Sweeney, 1954; Cowey, 1956; Adair & Vishniac, 1958). The method to be described here offers advantages in sensitivity, permitting direct measurement of the vitamin in small quantities of oceanic waters after further dilution; samples to be measured pass through comparatively few different containers and thus there is less risk of their accumulating adventitious vitamin; simple and easily cleaned apparatus is used, and much less bench-work is involved than when methods other than dilution are used for lowering the salt concentration.

Eudendrium moulouyensis is a zooxanthellate hydroid originally described from the Chafarinas Islands (Alboran Sea, south-western Mediterranean) in summer 1991. According to the original description, this species can be identified due to the occurrence of symbiotic zooxanthellae in the entire endodermal layer of the colony (gastrodermis and tentacle endodermis), a unique feature among the Mediterranean Eudendrium species. However, several aspects of its life cycle and the extent of its phenotypical variability are still unknown. Since winter 2004, colonies of E. moulouyensis were recorded throughout the year from 0.5 m to 30 m depth from the southern Adriatic Sea (Otranto Channel) and the Gibraltar Strait (Alboran Sea). Additional specimens were collected from the northern Adriatic (Vis, Croatia), Sicily Channel (Pantelleria and Lampedusa Islands), and western Sardinia (Costa Paradiso). These findings offered the opportunity to describe for the first time the full life cycle and to elucidate several biological aspects related to phenotypical variation of colony morphology, vertical zonation, seasonality, zooxanthellae–polyp relationship, and cnidome morphology and distribution. The number and morphology of male gonophores per reproductive polyp is described here for the first time, providing a useful taxonomic character to easily discriminate Myrionema amboinense from E. moulouyensis. From the available information, the occurrence of M. amboinense in the Mediterranean Sea should be regarded as doubtful, if they are not accompanied by observations of cnidome, male gonophores or distinctly separate tentacles whorls.

Clumps of macroalgae on sheltered shores exposed at low tide provide a mosaic of micro-habitats for halacarid mites. The predominant pattern is one of zonation, with the level of high water neap tides limiting the distribution of many species of Halacaridae. Within emersed clumps of macroalgae four micro-habitats are recognized: the dry surface layer of the clump; damp fronds within the clump retaining surface moisture; lower stipes and holdfasts; the surface of the substratum between the holdfasts. Halacaridae are spatially segregated, different species being associated with different micro-habitats within clumps. This has implications for the way in which intertidal phytal meiofaunal communities are sampled. In general damp fronds from within seaweed clumps are collected. Species characteristically associated with stipes, holdfasts and the substratum beneath the clumps are probably under-represented in the majority of collections, and may, therefore, be considered rare.

Understanding the structure and richness of natural communities is a fundamental goal of marine ecology, and foundation species such as large macroalgae have a disproportionate role in structuring biodiversity. However, high-resolution information on assemblages associated with macroalgae is lacking for many species and regions. Saccorhiza polyschides is a warm-temperate kelp with a relatively short lifespan (12–18 months), large thallus and bulbous holdfast offering habitat for diverse assemblages. In the UK, S. polyschides populations are thought to have proliferated recently. Here, we quantified the density and habitat structure provided by S. polyschides along a gradient of wave exposure within Plymouth Sound, and examined the composition and diversity of associated faunal assemblages. Density varied significantly between sites but not by wave exposure, while biometric measurements were generally highly variable. Senescing holdfasts from sporophytes offered valuable habitat, with high abundance and richness of associated assemblages, although these varied markedly between sporophytes and sites. Faunal abundance, taxon richness and diversity were significantly higher at fully exposed sites than at moderately exposed sites. Internal volume of holdfasts was positively correlated with faunal abundance and taxon richness. We recorded more than 27 distinct taxa and up to ~600 individuals within a single holdfast. Taxa included three fish species, including a novel observation of the pipefish Nerophis lumbriciformis. Further work is needed to examine seasonality in habitat structure and associated diversity patterns but our study demonstrates that even remnant holdfasts from decaying sporophytes represent a valuable microhabitat that may provide shelter, protection and food during winter.

As many Arctic fish species are intermediate hosts of anisakids, they are present in the diet of the ringed seal, Pusa hispida, and the bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus. Parasitic nematodes from the stomachs of 66 seals caught in the Nunavut region (Canada) from two communities (Arviat and Sanikiluaq) from October 2007 to January 2008 have been examined in order to identify the epidemiological risk for Inuit communities who consume traditional food. In Arviat 2428 anisakids were observed in 37 seals, while in Sanikiluaq 316 Anisakidae were isolated from 29 seals. The worms were treated with a host tissue, washed in deionized water and stored until analysis in 70% ethanol. The parasites were divided into three parts. The anterior and posterior parts were stored in 70% ethanol containing 5% glycerol and were examined using a light microscope by evaporation of the ethanol/glycerin mixture. The central parts were prepared for molecular identification by fixing in 70% ethanol. Using the polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) method, the following members of the family Anisakidae were identified: Contracaecum osculatum A and C and Pseudoterranova bulbosa. In the studied material, more adult worms were noted than larval stages. The most numerous nematodes were P. bulbosa, and mixed infection was observed. The mean prevalence of anisakids infection was 43.2% in the Arviat and 37.9% in the Sanikiluaq communities.

Anadara demiri (Piani, 1981) is an alien species in the Mediterranean Sea extending its range from Turkey westernly to the Adriatic Sea, where it is locally abundant. The species was first identified as Arca amygdalum Philippi, 1847 in the 1970s. The locus typicus of A. amygdalum is China. This first identification has never been discussed and the species has been thought to be of Indo-Pacific origin to date. However, in the Indo-Pacific province no Anadara shows any similarity with A. demiri. Morphological and molecular data suggest A. demiri is closely related to Anadara transversa (Say, 1822), a common species of the eastern coasts of North America. Anadara demiri is hence considered a junior synonym of A. transversa and the origin of this immigration has to be searched in the southern range of this species, maybe the Gulf of Mexico coasts of Florida.
