The present study was undertaken in order to analyse whether macrobenthic communities can or not be used in monitoring programmes of the environmental quality of fish ponds. Functional community analysis and biotic metrics were analysed aiming at the assessment of their effectiveness in discriminating potential impacts of fish production in these systems. The macrofaunal patterns in earthen fish ponds of the Ria Formosa lagoon showed to be influenced by the input of fish food during the production cycle and by changes in abiotic parameters caused by seasonality and fish production. Polychaetes were generally dominant considering the number of taxa and abundance. The trophic functional analysis of the benthic communities showed that the deposit-feeding functional group dominated in both areas of the ponds but within water entrance areas there was an increase of suspension-feeding, carnivory and herbivory feeding modes. The presence of less trophically mixed communities within feeding areas may be related to the relative high disturbance levels of these areas. From the biotic indicators that show a differential response to organic input in fish earthen ponds, the abundance of Capitella spp. as well as the diversity (Shannon–Wiener and Margalef species richness), evenness (Pielou) and AMBI indices seem to be the best indicators to be used in monitoring studies in similar systems. Managers should pay particular attention when Capitella spp. taxa are observed within the feeding areas. Nevertheless, manipulative experiments are needed in order to test the dominance levels of Capitella spp. and the values of those indices that are of concern.

In the present study 23 species of paraonids from western Mexico collected from the intertidal zone to the continental shelf of Baja California Sur, Guaymas, Sonora, and Petacalco, Guerrero are reported. Eight of these species are first recorded from the Mexican coast: Aricidea (Acmira) assimilis, Aricidea (Acmira) catherinae, Aricidea (Allia) ramosa, Aricidea (Aricidea) longicirrata, Aricidea (Aricidea) minima, and Levinseniaoligobranchiata; Aricidea (Aricidea) minuta and Cirrophorusarmatus are cited for first time from the Pacific. Two new species are described. Aricidea (Aricidea) petacalcoensis sp. nov. has bifurcate antenna on prostomium without nuchal grooves, tapering branchiae in chaetigers 4–13, modified neuropodial chaetae from chaetiger 21. Cirrophorus magdalenaensis sp. nov. has prostomium without antennae, eyes or nuchal grooves, banchiae from chaetiger 5, having ten pairs, notopodial modified chaetae bayonet-shaped.

Nomograms are presented for solving the equations relating the concentrations of chlorophylls a, b and c to sample volume and the extinctions of acetone extracts at three wave-lengths.

A new species of Biemna, Biemnastrongylota sp. nov. is described from Antarctica. The new species is compared to other Antarctic species of Biemna, B. chilensis and B. macrorhaphis from which it differs in that it possesses strongyle megascleres, instead of styles, and of the microsclere complement which includes microxeas, raphides and two categories of sigmata.

A number of records from echo-sounders have been loosely attributed to the presence of plankton. Only two records have been adequately identified as having been produced by plankton; first, the traces offish larvae, or shallow scattering layers (Burd & Lee, 1951); and secondly, the echo layer, at the depth of the temperature discontinuity or thermocline, which is sometimes associated with plankton animals or plants (Cushing, Lee & Richardson, in press). A third type of record, that from the ‘deep scattering layer', has been associated with the presence of euphausiids (Hersey & Moore, 1948; Moore, 1950; Boden, 1950): an equally plausible association with the presence of fish has been made by Marshall (1951), Tucker (1951) and Hersey & Backus (1954). A fourth type of echo record, a ‘noisy’ record, will be described and will show that it is probably attributable to plankton organisms, consisting, in one instance, of euphausiids.

Various enzymes have been successfully localized in whole specimens of several groups of marine animals up to 5 mm body thickness. With certain exceptions the animals are fixed for a short time and then incubated in media modified from those designed for sections. After incubation the specimens are stored in fixative or buffer for later serial sectioning back at the laboratory.

Interindividual trail following by the patellid limpet Cellana toreuma was studied by field observations for more than ten successive days in the non-reproductive period. This behaviour was more frequent during spring tides than neap tides, when the limpets were moving longer distances in response to greater tidal amplitudes. Small individuals performed this behaviour with longer distances and higher frequencies than did larger individuals. Path analysis revealed that total distance moved during foraging excursions and mean resting site height had direct and indirect positive effects on the frequency of the interindividual trail following, respectively, and shell length and frequency of intraindividual trail following exerted a direct, negative effect.

Ergenstrema mugilis Paperna, 1964, the only member of the genus, has been collected in the Mediterranean from the gill rakers of the thin-lipped grey mullet Liza ramada (Risso, 1810) by Paperna (1964) and Lambert & Sanfilippo (1977); this parasite, under the name of ‘Dactylogyridea sp.’, was collected also from the same microhabitat of the same host from the coast of Albania by Ergens (1960). At Plymouth, parasites clearly belonging to the genus Ergenstrema have been collected from both the gill rakers and lamellae of a different host, the thick-lipped grey mullet Chelon labrosus (Risso, 1826).

A total of 209 strandings of sea turtles (152 loggerhead turtles Caretta caretta, 42 green turtles Chelonia mydas, 15 unidentified) were recorded during the period 1984–2011 along the coasts of Rhodes (Aegean Sea, Greece). The proportion of dead to live individuals was different in the two species. Stranded Caretta caretta were larger than Chelonia mydas. The size range of stranded green turtles, usually juveniles, appeared to increase since 2000, including the largest specimens ever observed in Greek waters. For both species, a tendency to strand more frequently on the west coast of the island, along fishing ground areas, was noted. The higher incidence of loggerhead turtle strandings was observed in summer, while more green turtle strandings were documented in winter. Factors involved in the increased trend of stranding records of both species, along with the acceleration of this phenomenon in the last decade, are discussed. Data from Rhodes provide evidence that human activities detrimentally affect mainly larger-sized loggerhead turtles living in shallow waters.

A population of the sipunculan worm Aspidosiphon muelleri, located in temperate waters of the western Mediterranean Sea, was monitored monthly for a year. Some aspects related to its ecology and reproductive biology are shown in the present work. The sex-ratio for this population was close to 1:1 (54% females vs 46% males), thus indicating a dioecious reproduction, although showing a lack of sexual dimorphism. Oocytes were detected in females from 4–5 mm; this size might be reached by A. muelleri in a few months. The population density increased notably during the summer (June–August). The spawning event date was indirectly estimated from the average size of the oocytes and the percentage of females with free oocytes in the coelom. Both variables were significantly correlated to shallow water temperature (Pearson correlation; P = 0.003 and P = 0.001, respectively). Oocyte size was also significantly correlated to average irradiance level (Pearson correlation; P = 0.044). Spawning took place between August and September (when the water temperature is getting close to its annual maximum) and may last only a few weeks in these temperate waters. The abundance of A. muelleri decreased drastically in September, likely as a consequence of the spawning event effort. Bivalves of the species Epilepton clarkiae were collected together with specimens of A. muelleri living inside the polychaete tubes used as shelters by the sipunculans, with a prevalence of 11.64%. To a lesser extent some Foraminifera were also reported attached to the body of the sipunculans.

Four multidisciplinary oceanographic surveys were conducted in November and December from 2007 to 2010, along the Mauritanian coast (NW Africa). A total of 10,514 brachyuran crabs belonging to 33 species were captured in 316 hauls at depths between 79 and 1867 m. The most specious family was Inachidae represented by nine species; the remaining 24 species belonged to 16 other brachyuran families. Monodaeus cristulatus is reported for the first time since its original description. Seven other species, Ethusa rugulosa, Pseudomyra mbizi, Inachus grallator, Macropodia gilsoni, Macropodia hesperiae, Solenolambrus noordendei and Spinolambrus notialis extend their range of distribution northwards and, together with Goneplax barnardi, are reported here for the first time in Mauritanian waters. New data about depth ranges are reported for Acanthocarpus brevispinis, Ethusa rugulosa, Inachus aguiarii, Inachus grallator, Inachus nanus, Macropodia macrocheles, Solenolambrus noordendei, Spinolambrus notialis, Liocarcinus corrugatus and Monodaeus cristulatus. New data relating to the spawning period for most of the species are also included, as are some biogeographic and bathymetric considerations about brachyurans studied in the area.

Until the year 1881, when Balfour wrote on the subject, the pronephros was generally believed to be a functional kidney, not only in the larval condition, but also in those adult forms described as possessing the organ.

Balfour, in his more detailed paper, published later, states that in the fishes examined—pike, eel, smelt, and angler—although the pronephros had all the appearance, externally, of a true functional kidney, no uriniferous tubules were present, and that a minute examination only disclosed a degenerate trabecular tissue which he describes as lymphatic.

The angler (Lophius), it may be observed, is generally considered to possess only a head kidney. This organ Balfour found to be in a perfectly functional condition, but he declines to believe that it is a persistent head kidney, and argues from the highly modified structure of the fish that the organ in question is in reality the mesonephros. shifted forward from its normal position. He also maintains that in adult Ganoids the head kidney has no longer a renal function. His general conclusion, therefore, is, that since the pronephros was only supposed to persist in Ganoids and Teloosteans, it must be now considered as non-existent except in the embryonic or larval conditions.

The brown alga Pilayella littoralis is common and widely distributed in the North Atlantic. In insular Newfoundland it is found year-round in the subtidal, but shows a distinct periodicity in the intertidal where it is a summer annual. Rapid growth begins in May and a maximum biomass is achieved in the summer with plants disappearing by October. Besides seasonal changes in abundance, seasonal changes in reproductive behaviour and calorific values of this alga also occur.

Pilayella littoralis is the most abundant consumable alga available to intertidal amphipods in Newfoundland. Newly hatched Gammarus lawrencianus grew faster and matured at a younger age on a diet of summer P. littoralis than on plants collected in the spring. Size at maturity and reproductive output (size of eggs, number of eggs) of maturing females did not vary with the time of collection of Pilayella.

Campecopea hirsuta (Montagu) occurs in rock crevices, and among barnacles and the lichen Lichina in south-west Britain. It is particularly abundant on shores ex-posed to wave action, occurring most commonly at about M.T.L. and below on shallow slopes, and from M.T.L. to H.W.N. on steep slopes. Young Campecopea of about 1–5 mm long are released in late summer. Females attain a maximum length of 35 mm and males 4–0 mm, each having a life span of no more than 1½ years.

The diet of Synaphobranchus kaupi from the Porcupine Seabight is described. A sample of 110 eel stomachs containing food, were analysed and the general size–depth trend among eels with food in their stomachs. Larger individuals are found in deeper waters. Fish are the main prey for larger eels and crustaceans are preferred by smaller individuals.

Synaphobranchus kaupi Johnson, 1862 is a slope dwelling eel, abundant in the north-east Atlantic Ocean from 230 to 2420 m deep on the continental slope (Haedrich & Merrett, 1988). It is the most abundant species on the slopes of the Porcupine Seabight, off south-west Ireland (Merrett et al, 1991; Priede et al., 1994) and was classified as a benthopelagic predator of the fourth level, predator of predators (Saldanha, 1991).

The diet of S. kaupi has been described from the slope off the middle Atlantic coast of the USA (Sedberry & Musick, 1978), from the Portuguese slope and in the Bay of Biscay (Saldanha, 1991), from the west African slope (Merrett & Marshall, 1981; Merrett & Domanski, 1985) and from the Rockall Trough (Gordon & Mauchline, 1996).

Our specimens were captured during a joint IOS/SAMS survey (Merret et al., 1991). From a total catch of 8792 S. kaupi, captured between 1979 and 1983 in the Porcupine Seabight, ranging from 470 to 2230 m deep, fish stomachs were removed aboard ship and 110 with food were kept in 5% formalin for further analysis.

Visceral fat content, liver weight and carcass weight changes in female sand smelt Atherina boyeri from three brackish lagoons of southern France were studied throughout the year 1993. Each of these three parameters showed a peak in autumn, the visceral fat content peak occurring earlier in the season. Moreover, when ovary weight was maximal, maturing and ripe fish exhibited a second liver weight peak in April, at the beginning of the reproductive season which extended from late February to late August. Reserves were stored in flesh, liver and the abdominal cavity after the end of reproduction and were utilized from late autumn to early summer to overwinter and reproduce. At the onset of the breeding season, visceral fat content and eviscerated weight in larger fish, which started reproducing earlier and stopped later than smaller ones, were relatively higher. From April onwards, as reproductive effort was at its highest, liver and ovary weights decreased. However, eviscerated weight in smaller fish and visceral fat content in larger ones rose slightly before they ceased breeding. It is suggested that the strategy, especially in younger fish, is to avoid complete exhaustion in reproduction. This reduces the risk of subsequent overwintering mortality and increases the chance of reproduction in the future.

The preference for two shell species, Monodonta labio form confusa and Thais clavigera, was compared between two populations of the hermit crab Pagurus filholi from Oura Bay, Shimoda, central Japan and from Hakodate Bay, Hakodate, northern Japan. Hermit crabs from Oura Bay preferred T. clavigera to M. labio form confusa, whereas crabs from Hakodate Bay preferred M. labio form confusa. The shell of T. clavigera was more effective against desiccation and high temperature stress but heavier than M. labio form confusa. The preference of P. filholi from Oura Bay for T. clavigera may be attributable to the greater requirement for protection against higher physical stresses, even though a higher energetic cost related to the shell weight is incurred.

This small species was described by Verrill in 1898, and first observed by Miss Verrill in 1892 near New Haven, U.S.A.

In 1902 Parker noted a number of new localities, and remarked upon its rapidly extending range on the American coast.

A thermo-tolerant diatom species has been isolated from Tunisian hot spring water (40°C). The isolated diatom has been molecularly identified and classified into the genus Halamphora. The growth kinetics, lipid content and distribution of fatty acids were assessed at 20 and 30°C temperature levels and constant irradiance in controlled batch cultures (11 days). Halamphora sp. showed better growth (μ = 0.53 day−1) and a higher lipid yield (25% of the dry weight) at a higher temperature (30°C). Under the two temperatures tested, the highest lipid and fatty acid contents were mainly reached during the stationary growth phase. The fatty acid profile showed a significant content of two essential fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6), reaching ~15% and ~21% of the total fatty acids, respectively, at 20°C and 30°C. The distribution of the different components of the fatty acids showed that EPA and AA were mainly located in the neutral lipid fraction in the stationary phase.
