A large (100 km) rocky coast intertidal was sampled several times (from 2004 to 2006) to assess the affection degree of invertebrate assemblages impacted by a continuous oil spill. Twelve locations and two intertidal heights were selected along the coast representing two spatial scales (kilometres and tens of metres). Univariate and multivariate analyses of variance were used to test whether faunal assemblages exposed to different intensities of oil disturbance differ in terms of diversity, total cover, key species cover and trophic guilds. Whereas no significant differences in midshore assemblages were noted, the low intertidal zone exhibited comparatively lower abundance values of the limpet Patella ulyssiponensis at worst affected sites. Besides, a generalized increasing diversity trend was found in the low intertidal from 2004 to 2006. Natural variability of communities is also discussed as the cause of the differences we observed. With respect to spatial and temporal scales of variation, mid- intertidal communities showed a more consistent structure, while lowshore assemblages were markedly heterogeneous in practically all the variables measured.

The absence of systematic records showing the variations of the floating fauna and flora, or plankton, of the Plymouth waters is much to be regretted. My observations on the amount of animal and plant life suspended in the sea from the surface to the bottom would show that in comparison with similar observations made elsewhere, the quantity of plankton in this locality was during the past summer surprisingly small. The absence of data upon which comparisons could be based between the state of the water in this season and that obtaining in former years is all the more to be deplored because the present season has in many respects been a remarkable one. In the first place, the Plymouth mackerel fishery has so far been a complete failure; it has further been found that dog-fishes (both Scyllium and Acanthias) were not obtainable during June and July; and lastly, Aurelia aurita, which in summer is usually common, was extremely scarce in the Sound and tidal waters of Plymouth. If my Burmise that the amount of plankton was for the locality exceptionally small proves correct, then these three salient instances of scarcity of animals which are directly or indirectly dependent on the plankton for their food will suffice to show the importance of a series of more or less continuous observations on the physical and biological condition of the inshore and Channel waters. Were accurate information on these points available, it would in all probability enable us to explain, and we might even in time be able to foresee, the occurrence of so important an event as the exceptionally sporadic appearance of the mackerel in 1892.

In the course of a study of the British Nuculidae the specific characters of a large number of specimens of N. turgida and N. moorei were re-examined. It was found that no distinction could be made between the two.

Examination of variation in shell colour showed that it was not possible to differentiate into two distinct types. There was a continuous graded seiies from a dark purple-grey in which the basic yellow colour was almost completely masked, through a series with decreasing numbers of purple-grey radiations, to shells in which the markings could not be differentiated as rays, and finally to shells without purple coloration. The purple-grey colour is not necessarily laid down continuously, and it does not develop until the end of the second year. As the shells get older an increasing percentage of them become coloured.

Although the two types of faecal pellets described by Moore were found they could not be associated with the radiate and non-radiate shell types. The five grooved faeces that he claimed were typical of the radiate variety, were found in only three of the fifty-six specimens examined. Only one of them was from a definitely radiate shell.

Shell measurements and growth rates were studied, and no feature was found on which two forms could be separated. Samples show that reproduction takes place at the same time in the rayed and unrayed shells.

As the name N. nitida Sowerby is preoccupied it is suggested that the name N. turgida Marshall should now be used with N. moorei a synonym of it.

During the summer of 1936 I obtained mature specimens of the medusa of Corymorpha nutans at Plymouth. An account of the early development of the hydroid reared from the fertilized eggs of these is given below. Young polyps of this species have been figured by Allman (1871) and by Hartlaub (1907). Allman found his young polyps developing apparently from the rooting filaments of the parent hydroid which had become free. Hartlaub figures and assigns young polyps which he found in the plankton at Helgoland to this species.

Although semi-isolated mangrove lagoons are common in the Caribbean, few studies have surveyed organisms of multiple trophic levels and taxa in these lagoons, which are characterized by a lack of adjacent seagrass and coral-reef habitats. In this study, visual surveys, minnow traps and plankton tows, which were deployed at abutting mangrove prop roots and on macro-algal beds 5 and 15 m away from the prop roots, were used to study assemblages of fish and their potential prey in a semi-isolated lagoon located on Utila, Honduras during the dry season. Assemblages of fish and macro-crustacea differed between the three distances from prop roots, while zooplankton abundances were highly variable and did not follow any distinct distribution patterns. Daytime visual surveys found that large lutjanid (snapper) juveniles, tetraodontid (pufferfish), and some species of brachyurans were more abundant near prop roots. Small lutjanid juveniles were also significantly more numerous near prop roots, but their potential prey, copepods, showed no such difference in abundance. However, 24-hour minnow trap catches found that mean fish abundance (although low) did not differ between near-mangrove transects and transects located in algal beds away from prop roots. Whereas it is well known that mangrove–seagrass habitats play a vital role for fish in open systems, low abundances of organisms in algal beds, particularly in the day time, in this study indicate that algal beds may not be as important to fish in a semi-isolated mangrove lagoon.

Nuchalosyllis Rullier & Amoureux, 1979 is an extremely rare syllid genus, only known from the holotype of its type species, N. lamellicornis Rullier & Amoureux, 1979. The genus is characterized by the dorso-ventrally flattened body and the unique comb-like nuchal epaulettes. We herein describe the second specimen of this genus ever found, which is also a new species, Nuchalosyllis maiteae sp. nov.; it differs from N. lamellicornis in having different morphology of nuchal epaulettes, spinose papillae on cirrophores of dorsal cirri throughout and sub-bidentate posterior body falcigers.

Skeletal form is the key to silicoflagellate taxonomy. Variations in skeleton morphology have been frequently described for the genera Dictyocha and Distephanus (Lemmerman, 1908; Deflandre, 1932; Hovasse, 1932; Frenguelli, 1935; Boney, 1973, 1976), and the wide ranging skeletal variations observed with clonal cultures of Dictyocha fibula Ehrenb. underline the potential plasticity of skeleton formation in this species, (Van Valkenberg & Norris, 1970). Sufficient information now appears available to indicate where taxonomic confusions may arise, particularly when single skeletons are observed either in phytoplankton samples or in fossil deposits. Paired skeletons are predivision stages (Gemeinhardt, 1930; Hovasse, 1932; Marshall, 1934; Boney, 1976). The juxtaposition of the two skeletons in this predivision stage allows a more critical assessment of the taxonomic significance of an aberrant form.

The distribution of Pectenogammarus planicrurus Reid around the British coast appears to be restricted to a few scattered areas. As far as is known it has only been recorded in three localities.

The first of those is the ‘type locality’, described by Reid (1940), at Saltdean, Sussex. Here the upper region of the shore consists mainly of flint pebbles, the middle shore mainly of sand with patches of flint and chalk pebbles and the lower shore of boulders of chalk on a solid chalk base. Reid found it plentiful under stones near high water mark.

In a brief survey of the south coast beaches, from Brighton, Sussex, to Deal, Kent, in the summer of 1965, P. planicrurus was found in large numbers on the chalk and flint beaches associated with the coastal outcropping of the chalks of the North and South Downs. By far the largest populations were found at Seaford, Sussex, where, unlike Saltdean, the pebbles and gravel extend down to low water and P. planicrurus was not restricted to the upper part of the beach as it was at Saltdean. It appears that the ‘type locality’ described by Reid (1940) does not give a true picture of the vertical range of distribution of the species.

The second locality is at Port Erin, Isle of Man, where Jones (1948) observed P. planicrurus ‘under stones’ between H.W.N. and L.W.N. at Spaldrick on the north side of Port Erin Bay. Jones did not find this species in sufficient numbers to formulate a general idea of its habitat.

Acrothoracican barnacles of the genus Trypetesa are obligate symbionts of hermit crabs that burrow into the gastropod shells occupied by their hosts. In the present study, hermit crabs were examined for the presence of trypetesids, based on collections from the United States, Jamaica, and the Philippines made between 1997 and 2008. Shells from Jamaica and New York contained Trypetesa lateralis, a trypetesid previously documented from central California. Trypetesa lateralis is redescribed based on light and scanning electron microscopy, showing the presence of an external mantle flap and asymmetrical opercular bars diagnostic for this species. The mean prevalence of trypetesids in Jamaica was 8.3% and most barnacles were associated with Calcinus tibicen; in New York the barnacles were found in 1.6% of shells occupied by Pagurus longicarpus. Specimens from the Philippines were identified as Trypetesa spinulosa (formerly known only from Madagascar) based on the presence of their diagnostic orificial palps. The mean prevalence of T. spinulosa in the Philippines was 3.7% and most barnacles were associated with Calcinus spp. Hermit crab eggs were observed in the guts of T. lateralis from Jamaica and T. spinulosa from the Philippines. In both of these regions the trypetesids were found significantly more often in shells occupied by female hermit crab hosts (80–87% with females). These findings suggest the barnacles be classified as transient parasites. The biology of trypetesids is reviewed and a key to the family is provided. Further studies are needed to determine if egg predation occurs in all trypetesids and the impacts on hosts.

The following list brings up to date a previous publication and has been classified, so far as practicable, according to subjects, in order that it may be useful for purposes of reference. The list does not include publications recording the results of observations made on material supplied by the Association to workers in different parts of the country, of which a considerable amount is sent out each year.

Size at first maturity of Adelomelon brasiliana near Mar del Plata, Argentina, was established analysing gonad tissue samples and the secondary sexual characters. Age was determined through growth marks. Gonad matures after development of secondary sexual characters.

Minimum shell length at sexual maturity is 107 mm in females and 102 mm in males. The shell length at which 50% of the animals are mature is 115.1 mm in females and 107.25 mm in males (approximatley 7 years of age). In males, penis matures before testis. All animals are mature beyond 125 mm in females and 115 mm in males, respectively (approximatley 8 years of age). The comparative late sexual maturation in this species makes the population quite sensitive to over-fishing.

Estuarine habitats are major nurseries for the European flounder Platichthys flesus, with different year classes sharing food and space resources. Hence, an understanding of feeding strategies that optimize resource use and maintain carrying capacity is fundamental for sustainable and successful ecosystem management. The main feeding areas of juvenile European flounder (including 0-group and 1-group age classes) in the Lima estuary (northern Portugal) nursery ground were investigated by integrating stomach content analyses with stable isotopic values (δ13C and δ15N) and fish condition indices (Fulton K and RNA:DNA ratio). The 0-group flounder that were associated with the upstream section of the estuary presented the lowest δ13C value (−25.58 ± 1.86‰), while 1-group flounder exhibited a higher δ13C value (−22.59 ± 2.51‰), indicating use of the more saline areas of the estuary (lower and middle sections). The two age groups did not differ in terms of δ15N (0-group: 13.93 ± 0.29‰; 1-group: 13.50 ± 0.96‰), indicating similar trophic levels. The low salinity upper estuary was the main feeding area of 0-group flounder (74%), while 1-group flounder fed along the estuary both upstream (52%) and downstream (48%). Juvenile flounder showed high individual condition based on the Fulton K index (0-group: 1.05 ± 0.08; 1-group: 1.07 ± 0.05) and RNA:DNA (0-group: 1.70 ± 0.70; 1-group: 1.41 ± 0.47). These indices deal with fish health, and hence indicate nursery habitat quality. It is concluded that in this temperate nursery habitat, different feeding strategies sustained the condition of the European flounder juveniles, compared with other flounder populations.

We have estimated the length at maturity and length-weight relationships for five fish species inhabiting the deep-sea from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands off the Indian coast between 295–650 m deep in a trawl survey carried out in March–April 2017. Hauls were carried out by a high-speed Demersal Trawl Crustacean Version trawl net and analysis was performed for a total of 832 specimens. Length at first maturity of the five deep-sea fish species ranged from 14.28–105.73 cm while length at 90% maturity was in the range 17.87–159.83 cm. The length at maturity of the fish are Alepocephalus bicolor (male = 66.09, female = 105.73), Bathyclupea hoskynii (m = 15.14, f = 14.15), Chlorophthalmus corniger (m = 17.54, f = 15.31), Neoepinnula orientalis (m = 20.76, f = 16.76), and Neoscopelus microchir (m = 14.28, f = 15.40). The b value in the length-weight relationship ranged from 0.69–2.60, i.e. Alepocephalus bicolor (m = 1.93, f = 1.62), Bathyclupea hoskynii (m = 3.5, f = 1.66), Chlorophthalmus corniger (m = 2.07, f = 1.56), Neoepinnula orientalis (m = 2.86, f = 2.46) and Neoscopelus microchir (m = 0.89, f = 0.49). Based on these results, the b value showed an allometric relationship with length for all species studied, because these species have a similar morphometry, i.e. a flattened back. Since they are primary or secondary consumers at the bottom of consumer food webs, their roles are as predators of small–medium prey and as prey of top predators of food web chains.

The toxicity of produced formation water (PFW) originating from four natural gas production platforms located in the Adriatic Sea (Italy), and of seawater samples collected near these installations is assessed by means of bioassays with Brachionus plicatilis, with the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana and with Paracentrotus lividus. The toxicological response of these specimens was evaluated in order to identify the most sensitive one, in the consumer compartment, and to design a bioassay battery specific for samples collected in the surroundings of a gas platform. Larval mortality of rotifers, larval immobilization of crustaceans, fertilization success/failure (sperm cell test) and larval (pluteus) development success/failure (embryo toxicity test) of sea urchins were taken as ecotoxicological endpoints. The PFW sampled on two platforms resulted toxic, while no toxicity was recorded in seawater samples collected in the vicinity of the platforms, even in coincidence with the PFW discharge operations. The species and bioassays employed have shown different responses to PFW: P. lividus turned out to be more sensitive than A. franciscana and B. plicatilis. In particular, the embryo toxicity test showed a higher toxicity than the sperm cell test.

When collecting on the shores in the Plymouth area, while a member of the Easter Class at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Plymouth, in 1921, I was struck by the absence above low-water mark of Echinus esculentus, as contrasted with its abundance in this zone at Port Erin in the Isle of Man; for there, as Chadwick states, “it may be collected by hand on the beach, and on the ruined breakwater at low-water of spring tides.” There is no record of this species except below tide-marks in the “Plymouth Marine Invertebrate Fauna” list (Journ. Marine Biological Association, Vol. VII, 1904).

In 1849 W. P. Cocks, in the Trans. Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society (“List of Echinodermata procured in Falmouth and Neighbourhood from 1843 to 1849”), recorded the occurrence of this species thus:—

“Echinus sphœra.—Trawl refuse; common: young specimen found attached to stones, low-water mark.”

Later (1887–8), in the same journal, G. F. Tregelles, in a paper on “Echinodermata of Mount's Bay,” makes the following statement of the species of the genus Echinus: “The commonest and largest is E. esculentus (Pennant) [E. sphœra Forbes], which literally swarms off this coast at all depths. It is brought in by trawlers; it is found in crab-pots, into which it climbs laboriously after bait; the seaweed gatherers obtain them in from one to two fathoms of water. The Mouse-hole fishermen call them ‘zarts,’ doubtless an old Cornish word.”

This study consisted in the characterization of reproductive aspects such as oocytes morphology, temporal variation in size and frequency of oocytes and the reproductive cycle of the mussel Brachidontes rodriguezii. This species dominates the rocky intertidal coast of Buenos Aires province, Argentine and is a prey item of several exploited species; however, due to the introduction of piers and seawalls, as a consequence of anthropogenic activities, the species also inhabits sandy coasts. Mussels were collected from May 2011 to May 2013. Gonad tissue samples were processed according to standard histological procedures. Four gonadal development stages were described for males and females. According to the significant decrease in the frequency of mature oocytes, the spawning events were detected between February and May. However, some evacuation events were recorded in June–July. This study reports the first record of two modalities of hermaphrodites in this species; individuals with male and female gonads and individuals with both types of gametes within a gonad.

The hitherto unknown hydroid of the anthomedusa Bougainvillia principis has been found in the Firth of Clyde, and medusae from it have been reared. The hydroid and the stages of development of the medusa are described and figured. The medusa is commonly present in the plankton in this area, and its seasonal occurrence is described.

The historical development of our knowledge of B. principis and of B. superciliaris, which have been confused, is discussed. The hydroid and the young medusae of B. principis are shown to be identical with those described by Hartlaub and attributed by him to B. superciliaris.

Several doubtful species of Bougainvillia medusae described from British waters are considered and are identified with accepted species. Medusa ocilia and M. duodecilia are probably synonymous with Bougainvillia pyramidata and B. principis respectively; and B. nigritella is identified with B. muscoides, B. simplex with B. principis, B. dinema with B. britannica., and B. charcoti with Nemopsis crucifera, itself a probable synonym of N. bachei. The medusa B. alderi is a probable synonym of B. ramosa.

The hydroids and the medusae of the British species of Bougainvillia are reviewed and compared; and records of B. superciliaris and B. macloviana are given.

The microhabitat and morphology of Grubea cochlear (Monogenea), a rare gill parasite of Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus), were investigated for a sample of fourteen parasite individuals obtained from Lyme Bay, southern England. Grubea cochlear showed a preference for the inner hemibranch of the fourth gill arch, this localization contrasting with that of the related and sympatric species Kuhnia scombri. The morphology of G. cochlear in this sample differed slightly from some of the previously documented specimens, especially with regard to the number of small genital hooks and the relative size of the haptor. It is suggested that geographical morphological variation may occur in this species.
