“It may interest you to know that on Friday, 14th January, the weather being very fine, and the wind from the S.E., as the fishing-boat Sea Belle (Mr. Blamey, master), was proceeding to the pilchard ground some four or five miles south of the Deadman headland, when about two miles from land they fell in with masses of muddy brown matter in strings, some of which were three or four hundred yards long and form two to seven feet wide, floating quite on the surface. They had not proceeded far along these lanes or path-like forms on the sea before they observed that pilchards were feeding on them ravenously; so they tacked their boat among them for a mile or more, and the further they went the more abundant were the pilchards. About four miles from land and in thirty fathoms of water the anxious gulls indicated the outmost limit of these strangely coloured bands, and here the pilchards were the most plentiful, almost rabid in their mad rush on the lessening streaks, causing the water to boil and whirl violently. Certainly some of the shoals of pilchards could not have had less than thirty to sixty thousand fish in them, for they coloured the water a dark red when concentrated on the brown matter.

“Of course our fisherman expected a more than ordinary catch of pilchards when setting their nets; but, strange to tell, with the decline of the light, having fed to repletion, they sank down below the nets, and the catch was a small one, amounting to some two or three thousand fish.

Wimpenny's measurements of Rhizosolenia styliformis (this Journal, Vol. xxi, pp. 29-60,1936) are used to discuss the value of population curves of this species as indicators of water movements and mixture in the North Sea. His alleged correlation between average size and temperature is shown in this case to be untenable. On the coastal banks during 1933 there was a steady increase of size accompanying normal regeneration (bimodal curves), but this was complete by November, and in 1934, with fuller seasonal sampling, the size steadily diminished (all curves unimodal). The population phases on the Dogger and coastal banks were markedly divergent in 1933, but almost identical and intermixed in 1934, indicating a northern (“Atlantic”) influx in 1933 and its absence in 1934. Off the southern edge of the Dogger in the autumn of 1932 a bimodal and unimodal population were variously mixed, the former showing relations to the coastal population of the following spring, the latter probably marking the intrusive northern element which persisted into 1933.

The genus Astrodia (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea: Asteronychidae) was revised based on 34 specimens including two syntypes of Asteronyx excavata, two syntypes of Asteronyx plana and two syntypes of Ophiocreas abyssicola. We proposed a transfer of Ophiocreas abyssicola (Euryalidae) to the genus Astrodia. Consequently, Astrodia now includes four species, Astrodia abyssicola, A. excavata, A. plana and A. tenuispina. These four species are all redescribed. A taxonomic key to the species of the genus Astrodia is also provided.

INTRODUCTION

The results of bottom line fishing have shown that significant catches can be made down to 3000 m depth at several positions on the continental slope off south-west England (Forster, 1968). But when hooks were lifted off the bottom either deliberately or accidentally very few fish were taken. The chances of catching bathypelagic fish in mid-water by baited hooks therefore seemed slender. In 1966 when thin white lines were tried, they were bitten through several times, always at about 1100 m depth. Trials with baited hooks set on thin wire lines in 1967 showed that the black scabbard fish Aphanopus carbo could be taken at this depth. In 1968 and 1970 during the course of short voyages on R.V. ‘Sarsia’ further vertical line hauls were made, taking Aphanopus regularly and also two species of deep-water squaloids.

Relationships between size, wet weight, dry weight, carbon and nitrogen content were determined in Ophiothrix fragilis (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea). Such relationships appeared very useful when studying dynamic processes such as nutrition, growth, excretion or reproduction, considered as fluxes of carbon and nitrogen in the ecosystem.

Relationships between size, wet weight, dry weight, ash free dry weight, carbon and nitrogen content of organisms are of fundamental interest in ecological studies of ecosystems. They allow us to understand and quantify the role of a species as it stores, consumes or produces organic matter during its life cycle. Determination of conversion factors are time-consuming but very useful for estimating flows in the ecosystem (Brey et al., 1988). Some compilations of conversion factors have been published (Båmstedt, 1981; Rumohr et al., 1987).

Ophiothrix fragilis (Abildgaard) is the dominant species of the ‘pebbles with sessile epifaunal community’ (Davoult, 1990), located in the Dover Strait (eastern Channel), where tidal currents are very strong. It is considered as an efficient suspension feeder (Roushdy & Hansen, 1960; Warner, 1971) and lives in dense populations (1000–2000 individuals m-2; Davoult, 1989) which are assumed to have a significant effect on the fluxes of organic matter from the pelagic to the benthic system and on the fluxes of ammonium to the water column (Davoult et al., 1991).

Individuals were sampled in May and June 1991 off the Cape Gris-Nez (50°55′N 1°35′E). Two-hundred individuals were measured (diameter ±01 mm, after Guille, 1964), dried at 60°C for 48 h, weighed (±0·1 mg), burnt at 520°C for 6 h (Anonymous, 1986), and the ash weighed (±0·1 mg). Total organic carbon and nitrogen content were determined with a CHN element analyser (Carlo Erba 1106): after a flash combustion in a helium stream temporarily enriched with pure oxygen, quantitative combustion was achieved by passing gases over Cr2O3 after a transfer through a reduction reactor to eliminate the excess of oxygen; components were separated in a chromato-graphic column, eluted, then measured by a thermal conductivity detector. Thirty-eight dried ophiuroids were ground with a micro-grinder, then two sub-samples (except for individuals <2 mm) were weighed at ±1 μg (76 measurements).

A new species, Longibrachium falcigerum, is described from seamounts in the North Atlantic Ocean, from depths of 495–695 m. Longibrachium falcigerum sp. nov. is unique among its congeners for possessing falcigers and spinigers in the lower chaetal bundle. Another member of the Rhamphobrachium complex, Rhamphobrachium (Spinigerium) brevibrachiatum, occurring with the new species, is briefly characterized.

Larval fish and hydrographic data were collected in Kavala Gulf (northern Aegean Sea) across a fine scale grid of 17 stations in two surveys, carried out in the beginning of July 2002 and 2003. Despite the different taxonomic resolution and excluding the unidentified larvae, 22 taxa were caught in 2002 and 27 in 2003. Seventeen taxa were present in both years' collections. A total of 833 larvae were collected during the two samplings. The adults of several larvae caught, although sometimes at very low concentrations, are species with high commercial value or represent a major proportion of the captured production of the northern Aegean Sea. The larvae of European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) were most abundant in both years followed by the brown comber (Serranus hepatus), the gobies (Gobius sp.) and, only for 2003, round sardinella (Sardinella aurita). Maximum anchovy larval densities reached 4145/10 m2 and 13852/10 m2 in the 2002 and 2003 surveys, respectively. The spatial extent of anchovy larvae was also high as they were collected at 12 stations in 2002 and at 15 in 2003. Besides water circulation, the spatial distribution of fish larvae was largely influenced by temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen.

Biometric relationships were recorded for 2431 male and female Panulirus echinatus sampled at Tamandaré coastal reefs, Pernambuco, Brazil. The following body measurements were taken: carapace length and width, abdomen length and width, total length, third and fifth pereiopod length, cephalothorax–abdomen and total weight. Twelve relationships were studied to compare the biometric characteristics of males and females. Eleven of them showed difference between the sexes. Comparing sexes with the same carapace length, males have a heavier cephalothorax and longer third and fifth pereiopods than females, whereas females are longer, wider, and have a heavier abdomen than males. For genders with the same total length, males are heavier and have a longer carapace than females, while females have a larger abdomen. For genders with the same abdomen length, males have a heavier abdomen than females. The relationships TWg/TL and AWg/AL showed positive allometric growth for the males. All other relationships involving weight, presented negative allometric growth for both sexes.

Malcolm Roy Clarke, FRS (1930–2013) made lasting contributions to cephalopod biology through his productive research programme, his commitment to furthering cephalopod biology and his congenial spirit. His professional legacy includes many important contributions. He wrote over 150 scientific papers, book chapters and other scholarly works, including, the Discovery Report on the role of cephalopods in the diet of sperm whales in the Southern Hemisphere, he edited A handbook for the identification of cephalopod beaks, which made the study of trophic interactions more accessible, and with colleagues he developed and instituted the Cephalopod International Advisory Council to provide advice on cephalopods and a framework for international meetings. His impact on marine science was broad and longstanding.

Examination of a small sample of Podocerus chelonophilus found clustered around mucus-exuding epidermal lesions of juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) collected off Madeira revealed the presence of fibrous material in the gut contents. The absence of planktonic remains suggested that these amphipods had been exploiting turtle material directly.

With the exception of the Cyamidae (whale lice), rather few amphipod taxa consistently live in association with marine vertebrates. Sea turtles, however, have been recorded carrying gammaridean and caprellidean epibionts by Caine (1986), who reported eight gammaridean species (including two domicolous fouling species) from nesting loggerhead turtles in Florida.

Microsatellite loci are one category of genetic markers that are frequently highly polymorphic. As such they have proved to be extremely useful tools for examining the population biology of many different taxa, and offer the potential to discriminate among fish stocks. Here, four new polymorphic microsatellite loci in the European plaice, Pleuronectes platessa are reported. In addition, data are provided on the utility of all published plaice microsatellite loci in flounder (P. flesus), lemon sole (Microstomus kitt) and Dover sole (Solea solea).

A study of an inshore southern North Sea population of lesser weever, Echiichthys vipera, on the Suffolk coast, England, found this small, abundant, benthic fish to reach an age of 15 years and suffer an adult mortality rate of only 0.23 y−1. The maximum length observed of 195 mm Standard length (SL) (225 mm total length, TL) was the greatest yet reported and many individuals >140 mm SL (163 mm TL) were caught between 2009 and 2012. Previous studies have reported a maximum of 160 mm TL and a von Bertalanffy asymptotic TL of 150.3 mm. Age structure analysis showed that recruitment into the local inshore Sizewell population continued until 5 or more years of age. A 6 year age of recruitment corresponds to the age when they have been reported to have disappeared from offshore locations and previously assumed to have died from old age. Regular seasonal changes in local abundance were observed with peak captures during May, presumably caused by seasonal immigration, followed by a summer minimum and a second, more variable, maximum in early autumn before the winter minimum. The winter minimum in captures may be due to either inactivity or offshore migration. Lesser weever has evolved a long-lived, slow growing, life history strategy unusual for small benthic fish in the southern North Sea. By spending long periods hidden in sand, using venom for defence and remaining inactive for an extended period each winter, lesser weever has adopted a strategy which favours high survival and increased longevity.

The response of a deep-water megafaunal assemblage to sedimentation disturbance from hydrocarbon drilling was investigated using remotely operated vehicle video off the Atlantic coast of Venezuela. This was the first assessment of megafauna in bathyal waters in this region. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) design was used to assess patterns in density and assemblage structure both temporally, before and after the drilling event, and spatially, at different distances from the disturbance. High levels of sedimentation occurred within a radius of 20 to 50 m from the drilling site. Megafaunal densities were reduced with high levels of disturbance (from 0.60 m−2 to 0.17 m−2 <20 m from the drilling site). The responses of motile and sessile fauna were different. Sessile fauna were most common (77% total) and reflected trends for total density. Motile megafaunal density was generally higher after drilling (up to double the pre-drill density). Species richness was reduced by disturbance and proximity to the disturbance. Multivariate ANOVA revealed significant differences in assemblage composition with distance and before and after drilling but no interaction. This was most likely a result of variable species-specific responses to disturbance. Megafaunal densities were generally much higher than reported densities from comparable depths in the Gulf of Mexico or from deeper locations in the Caribbean Sea. The responses to sedimentation disturbance were generally less obvious than observed elsewhere and may result from the fauna being adapted to the naturally high levels of sedimentation deriving from the Orinoco River.

Sampling data on abiotic parameters and benthic communities in the northern lagoon of Tunis were obtained seasonally from November 1999 to November 2000. Abiotic parameters studied revealed evident improvement of water quality compared with previous. Indeed, management has re-established a tidal marine influence (Gulf of Tunis), induced a remarkable change in physico-chemical parameters and as a consequence, a regulation of the lagoon environmental quality. A total of 90 species of benthic macroinvertebrates, belonging to seven different taxa were collected in the northern lagoon of Tunis. A comparison of ecological indices indicate significant variations in the spatial and seasonal distribution and structure of the benthic community and reflect changes that might be related to open marine water and climatic influences as well as effects of discharge of the neighbouring city. Generally, the lagoon macrobenthic community appeared to be better structured, richer and more diverse than the one described before sanitation works began. However, significant disturbance of the benthic communities is detected in the south-eastern lagoon zone (C) and is dominated by disturbance indicator species. In contrast, the Station A2 which is sufficiently influenced by marine currents, is dominated by species of marine affinity and indicates an undisturbed zone. Multivariate analysis indicates heterogeneity in the benthic community structure between stations and suggests that the most significant variations of abundance occur in the groups: Anthozoa, Placophora, Cephalopoda, Ascidia and Echinodermata. The results of correspondence analysis also testify to a gradational distribution of benthic species in relation to hydrological and edaphic (organic matter) factors.

Most studies on the pore signature of calanoid copepods have been made on adult femalessemicolon very little is known of the ontogenetic development of the pore signatures and their sexual differences. Males, females and copepodids of five species in the metridinid genus Pleuromamma are examined. Interspecific differences in the pore signatures occur as early as copepodid III. Differences in the signatures of the copepodids arise from two sources: (1) species-specific rates of development of the adult signaturesemicolon (2) development of the species-specific components of the adult signature. The cephalosomal signature is complete in copepodid V, and the metasomal and urosomal signatures are complete in copepodid VI, the adult stage. Sexual differences in the pore signature are found in copepodid IV and are primarily evident in the urosome of the adult. The species-specific components of the urosomal signature are greater in the female than in the male.

Coastal lagoons are highly variable environments that may act as hotspots of genetic diversity as a consequence of their ecological role as nursery habitats of marine species with both ecological and fisheries importance. The edible cockle (Cerastoderma edule) is a commercially important shellfish resource inhabiting coastal lagoons in Europe and their fisheries management urgently needs genetic studies to design appropriate strategies to promote the recovery of exploited populations. The aim of this study was to assess the C. edule genetic diversity and population structure at a small geographic scale, inside Ria Formosa coastal lagoon (southern Portugal) using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I sequences in six locations. Outcomes pointed to a common pattern of high haplotype diversity and non-significant genetic structuring inside the Ria Formosa lagoon. A high level of gene flow was detected between all localities and the presence of a single stock from a genetic point of view may be considered for fisheries management purposes. The existence of a high number of haplotypes and high values of haplotype diversity of C. edule in Ria Formosa lagoon could be consistent with the hypothesis that higher genetic diversity is expected in populations occurring in coastal lagoons, suggesting that lagoons could increase standing genetic variation and an adaptive potential of lagoon populations as an ecological response to a highly variable environment.

Although necessary for sustainable management of coastal ecosystems the understanding of trophic ecology of kelp fishes remains largely limited in the NE Atlantic. In this paper, stable isotope ratios of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), complementarily with analyses of stomach contents, were used to investigate the trophic ecology of an Atlantic kelp forest fish assemblage targeted by spear fishers in Galicia (NW Spain). Trophic habits of the fishes were consistent across the species ranges and six trophic niches were identified. Chelon labrosus was the only pelagic omnivore, while Conger conger and Dicentrarchus labrax were the principal predators, preying on benthic osteichthyes. The intermediate carnivorous Diplodus sargus mainly preyed on benthic molluscs, while Labrus bergylta exploited a wider range of prey. Although associated with different trophic niches, the two morphotypes of L. bergylta showed some degree of diet overlap, providing little support to the hypothesis of their separate management. Moreover, L. bergylta can be a keystone species whose adequate management has relevant implications for the sustainable use of the European kelp forest ecosystems.

Moulting is essential for crustacean growth, but is one of the causes of mortality, because a crustacean cannot move during and just after its ecdysis. In the cases of ectosymbiotic crabs, escape from the host's hostile response may also be a problem during its own ecdysis. In this study, Sestrostoma sp. (Varunidae), an ectosymbiotic crab which clings to the ventral abdomen of upogebiid shrimps with legs that can walk, was studied to clarify how the crab moults and maintains association with the host. Five cases of crab ecdysis were observed, where the crab moulted with its legs clinging to the host abdomen, without detaching from the host body. Time required for moulting was 14–21 min. Shedding of the old exoskeleton (active phase) took only 40–59 s. Sestrostoma sp. detached from the host abdomen and waited in the burrow tube during shrimp ecdysis. The crab then reattached at the same location on the host when shrimp moulting was complete. Our results suggest that Sestrostoma sp. are able to maintain a symbiotic relationship with the same shrimp host after its own ecdysis as well after ecdysis of its host.

Karyotypes of the hermaphroditic polychaete Hediste limnicola were examined using an air-drying method and genetic material prepared from regenerating tail and newborn juveniles. Materials were obtained from a lineage of cultured worms originating from Watsonville Slough (California, USA) and maintained for six years in the laboratory. Giemsa-stained preparations were analysed by a computer-assisted image-analysing system for the identification of each chromosome pair. A diploid chromosome number of 26 was obtained from well-spread metaphase chromosomes of mitotic cells, consisting of metacentric (N = 11), submetacentric (N = 1) and telocentric (N = 1) chromosomes. It is possible that hermaphroditism in this species evolved through loss of a pair of sex chromosomes, which are present in closely related congeneric species.
