Physiological and morphological parameters that affect survival were measured at the individual level in adults of the lesser mealworm Alphitobius diaperinus kept at 6 °C and 10 °C. Survival differed significantly among individuals and sexes and at different temperatures. At 6 °C, pervasive effects of cold, i.e. chill injuries, were too strong to allow survival, whereas the duration of survival was significantly influenced by the adult body size at 10 °C; initial fresh mass was positively correlated with survival in both sexes. The management of energy reserves was also significantly different among individuals. Weight loss was significantly slower in both males and females that had the longest longevity and kept at 10 °C when compared to males and females that had shortest longevity (3.05±0.47 μg/mg fresh weight/day and 2.71±0.60 μg/mg fresh weight/day, respectively, vs 5.68±3.77 and 9.01±9.39 μg/mg fresh weight/day). The largest insects lost weight at a constant but slower rate than the smallest ones. Prolonged exposures at 10 °C enforced inactivity and led to depletion of the energy reserves in both males and females through low food availability. The water ratio was significantly decreased over time: both males and females that had the longest longevity had significantly lower water ratio than males and females that had the shortest longevity.

Jaguar Panthera onca and puma Puma concolor are sympatric throughout the jaguar's distribution. Although several studies have focused on the interactions between these two predators, the ecological and behavioural factors that promote their coexistence remain unclear. The goal of this study was to identify those factors that facilitate the coexistence of these cats in a mosaic landscape in the Venezuelan llanos. The study was conducted from January 1996 until November 1998. Five jaguars and six pumas were captured and radio-collared. A high degree of spatial overlap was observed between jaguars and pumas, which may be related to the abundance and distribution of prey species. At a fine scale, there was little overlap of puma locations with jaguar locations. Both species were more active at night than during daytime, but seasonal differences were detected in the activity levels of these predators. Major segregation was found in food habits. Jaguars selected for large prey and pumas for medium-sized prey. Jaguars selected for capybara Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris and collared peccary Tayassu tajacu and consumed caiman Caiman crocodilus and white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus less than expected. Pumas selected just for collared peccary and also killed caiman less than expected. It is suggested that the abundance of medium-sized prey is an ecological factor that is facilitating the coexistence of jaguar and puma in the study area. Habitat heterogeneity may be another influential factor leading to the coexistence. Seasonal differences in activity levels probably reflect differences in the size and species of prey taken by these cats.

Overall migration speed is likely to be a trait under selection pressure in animals migrating annually between habitats for reproduction and survival. A general expression was used for migration speed (Vmigr), accounting for energy accumulation and transport, and derive how Vmigr scales with body mass for three types of migratory locomotion: running, swimming and flying (powered and soaring flight). Migration speed is predicted to increase with increasing body mass in animals that run (∝m1/11), swim (∝m1/24) and fly by soaring (∝m0.22), whereas in animals migrating by powered flight it decreases (∝m−1/4). How the relative duration of fuel accumulation to that of migratory locomotion scales with body mass is also derived. This proportion should increase in animals that run and fly, but should remain unaffected by body size in swimmers. The suggestion is made that in runners and swimmers, selection for enhanced migration speed could provide an explanation to Cope's rule, i.e. the observation that body size gradually tends to increase over time.

Five populations of habitat-specific, morphologically distinct Algophagus mites (Astigmata: Algophagidae) were found to occur on the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward islands. Although these mites did not differ among themselves with respect to idiosomal setal characteristics, which were also similar to those of known sub-Antarctic Algophagus taxa, morphometric analyses revealed leg and idiosomal size differences. In addition to morphometric differences, leg setal positions and porose axillary organ structure, indicated that the morphotypes were taxonomically discrete. The taxa were found to include the known A. antarcticus Hughes, 1955, A. laticollaris Fain, 1974 (new status), a sub-species of A. semicollaris Fain, 1974, and two new species, A. brachytarsus sp. nov. and A. macrolithus sp. nov. With the exception of A. semicollaris, the taxa are described or redescribed in this paper. Morphological features of the females in particular, and notably leg proportions, claw dimensions, and apodeme positions, corroborate discrete terrestrial (A. brachytarsus and A. macrolithus) and aquatic forms (A. antarcticus, A. laticollaris, and A. semicollaris), and vary in a manner suggesting a functional relationship to habitat occupation by the various taxa.

Macrotermes mounds are a significant feature of African woodland landscape, contributing to habitat heterogeneity. The mounds are massive, often many centuries old, and support dense vegetation and a suite of woody plant species scarce in surrounding woodland. The present study tested the hypothesis that Zimbabwean Macrotermes mounds, with their greater niche availability, were more heavily utilized by small vertebrates than the surrounding miombo woodland. We carried out a survey of amphibian, reptile and mammal species during early and late rains for 16 termite mounds and 16 adjacent woodland habitat sites, and compared numbers of individuals, species and diversity. For amphibians and reptiles, individual numbers and species did not differ significantly between habitats and their activity was more influenced by season. For mammals, however, significantly more individuals and species were captured on termite mounds, with three species captured only on mounds (most notably the musk shrew Crocidura hirta spp. complex) and all others showing marked preference for this habitat. The greater number of mammals on termite mounds contributed to total small vertebrate biomass being 800 g/ha for termite mounds compared with 380 g/ha in woodland. For mammals certainly, Macrotermes mounds provide significant food and habitat in miombo woodland.

Pikas (Ochotona spp.) are burrowing herbivorous mammals believed to play a keystone role in determining the biodiversity of steppe ecosystems. Impacts of domestic livestock grazing on the distribution and abundance of the Daurian pika Ochotona daurica were investigated in eastern Mongolia where the species is widespread and abundant. Effects of pikas on plant species richness and vegetation coverage were examined at different distances from burrow systems. Daurian pikas were nearly absent from severely grazed study sites, and incidence of the species increased with decreasing grazing intensity. The number of occupied burrow systems and usage of burrows was higher in sites with lower grazing pressure. Plant species richness and ground cover was higher at 3–12 m from the burrow systems than directly over burrows, suggesting that the effect of Daurian pikas is limited to the burrow system. Contradictory to previous studies on grassland pikas, this study indicates that Daurian pikas suffer from overgrazing and that their impact on grassland is only light.

Estimating the size of badger populations at a local scale using direct observation is difficult because of their nocturnal and elusive lifestyle. Methods based on live-trapping can provide robust estimates of badger numbers, but are very labour-intensive and expensive. The development of alternative methods to predict badger numbers accurately would provide valuable tools for research and management. Badger setts are distinct structures, which exhibit various signs of activity. The physical appearance of setts has been used in the past as a crude guide to the number of badgers likely to be trapped. In this study, an objective system for quantifying levels of activity at badger setts was developed and related to the number of trapped badgers. Several types of activity were positively associated with badger numbers, although these associations varied seasonally. Furthermore, all individual activity scores, summary indices and combinations of activity types were poor predictors of the number of badgers trapped. This is probably because variations in environmental conditions and badger behaviour confound the relationship between activity and badger numbers.

The anomalodesmatan Clavagellidae can be separated from the Penicillidae on the basis of ligament and adventitious tube or crypt structure. The Clavagellidae includes species of Clavagella (and Dacosta), Bryopa and Stirpulina. Two species, first described as Clavagella torresi Smith, 1885 and Aspergillum multangularis Tate, 1887, have consistently been placed in the genus Clavagella, but both are herein located in the new genus Dianadema. Because more material is available, this is primarily a study of Dianadema multangularis (Tate) which is designated as the type species of the new genus. Dianadema multangularis is unlike Clavagella, Bryopa and Stirpulina which are, respectively, recessing, boring and endobenthic representatives of the Clavagellidae, in that it is cemented and possesses a crown of dorsal tubules, in addition to anterior and ventral ones. As in all clavagellids (sensu stricto) the left valve is cemented into the fabric of an adventitious crypt while the right valve is free inside it. There is also a posterior multi-angular siphonal tube. The anatomy of D. multangularis is described and it is, in most respects, a typical clavagellid. The species differs from other clavagellids in the inferred aeration of the crypt via patterns of water flow, the crown of crypt tubules, and its unique cemented lifestyle. There are three (known) genera of clavagelloids endemic to southern and eastern Australia, i.e. Dacosta and, now, Dianadema (Clavagellidae) and to which the third, Humphreyia (Penicillidae), is similar in that the latter two are both cemented, albeit convergently. They also provide a surprising picture of convergent evolution of the cemented lifestyle even to the extent that both possess a unique pair of pericardial proprioreceptors, each derived differently, to monitor body tonus. Moreover, two other anomalodesmatan genera are also cemented, i.e. Cleidothaerus (Cleidothaeridae) and Myochama (Myochamidae), and these too are restricted to eastern Australia (and New Zealand). What forces promoted cementation in these four antipodean anomalodesmatan families are unknown.

Timm et al. (2001) argue that Pseudonovibos spiralis actually exists as a new bovine species, and identify as such two frontlets in the Kansas Natural History Museum, U.S.A. This is not the first time these specimens have been the subject of dubious taxonomic identification; they were previously misidentified by Hoffman (1986) as female kouprey Bos sauveli. A further irony is that the original unmasking (Dioli, 1995) was accomplished by an author of the current defense.

Effects of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on amphibian embryonic and larval development have been investigated in a number of studies, but the effects on later life-stages (metamorphosis) have received less attention. Hence, the effects of UV-B radiation treatments (control (no UV-B), normal and 26% enhanced levels of UV-B) on the development of the common frog Rana temporaria embryos from fertilization until metamorphosis were investigated. Survival until metamorphosis was significantly higher among individuals exposed to normal, as compared to individuals sheltered from, UV-B or those exposed to enhanced levels of UV-B radiation. There were no effects of normal or enhanced levels of UV-B radiation on the frequency of developmental anomalies. However, UV-B radiation delayed the timing of metamorphosis in a dose-dependent fashion, and the individuals from the normal and enhanced UV-B treatments metamorphosed at smaller size than those raised in the absence of UV-B radiation. These results suggest that UV-B radiation experienced through embryonic and larval stages can have negative effects on the growth and development of R. temporaria. Delayed metamorphosis at reduced size is also likely to lower the fitness during later life-stages.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Barbary sheep Ammotragus lervia was still present throughout the whole of Egypt except for the Sinai region. However, by the beginning of the 20th century it had disappeared from the Nile Delta region and from the Faiyum Oasis. In 1950 it was still present in the extreme south-east and in a small stretch of land in the Eastern Desert, and in half of the Western Desert. Today it is found only in the extreme south-east (Gebel Elba) and the extreme south-west (Gebel Uweinat and/or Gilf El Kebir) of the country. This sharp decrease in the distribution area of Ammotragus lervia is the result of intensive hunting by humans. The Barbary sheep of Gebel Elba now live in a region that has been designated a national park, which offers some protection. The Barbary sheep populations in the Uweinat/Gilf El Kebir area is in rapid decline, and it is now urgent that the Egyptian government enforce effective conservation measures to safeguard the last wild populations of Barbary sheep still present in its territory.

The seasonal activity of Leisler's bat Nyctalus leisleri and pipistrelle bats Pipistrellus spp. with respect to minimum bat numbers and habitat use were investigated in County Down, Northern Ireland using a driven transect from April 1998 to October 1998. Data were collected in lowland farmland near Belfast, Northern Ireland using two BatBox III bat detectors tuned to detect both species and species groups simultaneously. The number of bats/km increased during April, May and June, peaking in July and tailed off after this period. The main peak in July is assumed to reflect the occurrence of newly volant young. An increase in the number of pipistrelle social calls during August and September probably represented mating activity. Bat activity correlated with temperature in both N. leisleri and Pipistrellus spp., although bat numbers were independent of temperature after the middle of June. There was significant variation in habitat use by pipistrelle bats along roads over the study period. Pipistrelle bats were observed in greater numbers in areas of tree-line, cut hedge (≤1 m high) and deciduous woodland, and increased further when these habitats bordered both sides of the road. Nyctalus leisleri was found in similar numbers in all habitat types and there was no seasonal variation in habitat use. The validity of this method for revealing seasonal variation in bat numbers and habitat use is discussed. Ambient climatic conditions may affect the number of bats recorded, while some species with long-range echolocation calls, such as N. leisleri, may defy analysis of habitat associations.

As a solitary species, giant pandas Ailuropoda melanoleuca appear to use chemical signals to maintain a communication network with individuals in the community with whom they have little direct contact. Chemosensory discrimination abilities undoubtedly play a large role in determining the efficiency of this communication system. The hypothesis that pandas could discriminate the age of the signaller was tested by presenting subjects with a simultaneous choice test between odours collected from adult and subadult donors. Twenty-eight pandas were tested with three types of stimuli: male urine; male anogenital gland secretions; female urine. The results indicate that individuals from both age classes readily discriminate between adult and subadult odours emanating from all three odour types, showing a pronounced investigatory preference for adult odours in all cases. Female reproductive condition influenced general responsiveness to male odours, but did not significantly alter adult/subadult discrimination patterns. The prevalence of overt discrimination across odour types and age classes suggests an important and multifunctional role for this ability, and highlights the importance of studying chemical communication at all developmental stages. It is proposed that these results may be explained in part by: (1) assessment of competitive ability, which correlates with the age class of the signaller; (2) identification of potential mates that have attained reproductive maturity.

Warrens of the wild European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus are of concern in the Iberian Peninsula as a way to recover rabbit populations. However, there are no studies on the selection of sites where rabbits build their warrens. Between 1995 and 1997, in addition to warren size (number of entrances), the vegetation characteristics and the occurrence of tree roots in the ground surface occupied by warren entrances in Mediterranean scrubland and pastureland habitats were recorded in a sandy area of the Doñana National Park. Pastureland warrens were about twice as large as warrens in Mediterranean scrubland, and 1.8–1.4 times larger in the first study year than in the other 2 years. Warrens in pastureland were built more between tree roots (13.3–17.8%) than those built in Mediterranean scrubland (0.7–1.8%). In Mediterranean scrubland, most of the ground surface occupied by warren entrances was under tall shrubs (79.7–87.9%), with some under short shrubs (4.5–7.4%). In pastureland, these figures were 2.0–3.8% for tall shrubs, and 17.2–19.8% for short shrubs. Warrens were built between tree roots significantly less than expected in the Mediterranean scrubland, and slightly more than expected in the pastureland. Whereas warren surface was occupied by short shrubs significantly less than expected in the Mediterranean scrubland, the opposite pattern occurred in the pastureland; however, in both habitats tall shrubs were significantly preferred. These results suggest that rabbits may seek protection against collapsing warrens by selecting sites with some supporting structures such as the roots of trees or shrubs. Scrubland vegetation (preferably tall shrubs) should be favoured for medium- and long-term habitat management of areas aimed at supporting large rabbit populations. Furthermore, in sandy areas, some kind of stable ground support and external protection should be provided when creating artificial warrens for rabbits.

Recent models argue that thermal environments are the major cause of ectotherm life-history clines. However, elevational clines in body size in the mountain dusky salamander Desmognathus ocoee (family Plethodontidae) shift from positive at hatching, to negative at metamorphosis to positive again as adults, and so are not consistent with this explanation. The clinal shift from hatching to metamorphosis was investigated by examining the clinal and seasonal feeding patterns of larval salamanders at high and low elevation sites in rockface and woodland habitats. Repeated cohort sampling was also used to examine clinal and seasonal patterns in body size and to estimate average growth rates. Larval growth in both rockface and woodland habitats was tightly correlated with feeding activity. Although temperature was found to vary between high and low elevation sites, the greatest growth occurred in a cold woodland habitat with a high elevation, and the lowest growth occurred in an adjacent rockface habitat. Because this difference in growth cannot be attributed to thermal differences, we conclude that local food resource levels are the predominant source of local differences in growth. These findings, clinal patterns of variation in other predatory salamanders, and experimental analyses in which both food and temperature are orthogonally manipulated, indicate that general models that single out temperature as the principle cause of ectotherm life-history clines should be viewed with caution.

Changes in the spatial pattern of flocks of barnacle geese Branta leucopsis were examined in relation to individual behaviour during feeding visits to farm pastures. The flocks were photographed every 10–20 min, and the shape and location of the flock was determined from a plan view obtained from digitized images of the photographs. Flocks initially maintained a tight formation shortly after arrival, but then tended to expand with increasing residence time. The rate of expansion, however, was significantly greater in large flocks, with small flocks showing no consistent pattern. Observed rates of change in flock area were compared with those obtained from a simple model of flock movement in which individuals followed a random walk and moved at a constant speed. In contrast to the observed data, small simulated flocks (with relatively more edge birds) showed the greatest relative increase in flock area. This discrepancy between the data and the simulation can be explained mechanistically by differences in the behaviour of individuals in flocks of different sizes. In large flocks, birds at the leading edge of the flock had faster step rates and travelled further than birds in the centre and at the trailing edge. Rates of movement in small flocks did not vary with flock position. Levels of vigilance were higher during the first 10 min after arrival, in males, in smaller flocks and at the edges of flocks. Thus, upon arrival, flocks maintain a tight defensive formation with high vigilance, but with increasing residence time, vigilance decreases and larger flocks expand, suggesting a need for individuals to reduce feeding competition.

The reproductive biology of female pig-nosed turtles Carettochelys insculpta was studied for 4 years in the wet–dry tropics of northern Australia. Females matured at around 6 kg body mass (38.0 cm curved carapace length, 30.5 cm plastron length). Turtles produced egg sizes and clutch sizes similar to that of other turtle species similar in size. Turtles reproduced every second year, but produced two clutches within years, about 41 days apart. Thus, it appeared that females were energy limited, possibly due to the low available energy content of the dry season diet (aquatic vegetation). Life-history theory predicts that some costly behaviour associated with reproduction exists, such that by skipping years turtles could reduce that cost and put the savings into future reproduction. Previous work revealed no behaviour associated with reproduction in the population. Within years, clutch mass did not differ between early (first) and late (second) clutches. However, early clutches tended to have more eggs per clutch but smaller eggs than late clutches, a new finding for turtles that has been demonstrated in lizards and other animals. Because the study spanned both years with ‘big’ and ‘small’ wet seasons, we were able to examine how the magnitude of the wet season influenced reproductive characteristics. Following big wet seasons, turtles produced larger, heavier, and more eggs per clutch than they did after small wet seasons. Relationships among body size, egg size and clutch size were evident after two big wet seasons but not apparent after two small wet seasons. Collectively, annual variation in reproductive characteristics and current life-history theory suggest that a big wet season is a time of high energy accumulation for the turtles.

Raccoons Procyon spp. from New Providence Island in the Bahamas and from Barbados and Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles have traditionally been recognized as distinctive species endemic to their respective islands. All three of these ‘species’ currently possess official conservation status of high concern. Bahamian and Guadeloupean raccoons are recognized as endangered species by the World Conservation Union (IUCN), which also considers the Barbados raccoon to be a recently extinct West Indian mammal. However, historical, biogeographic, genetic, and morphological evidence demonstrate that all three West Indian raccoon populations are the result of human-sponsored introductions from the eastern U.S.A. that have occurred in the past few centuries. Accordingly, these animals should not be considered either conservation priorities or recent losses of biodiversity in the Caribbean. Instead, they may actually represent ecological threats to the insular ecosystems on their respective islands. Procyonid conservation goals must be re-examined and updated accordingly.

The prey brought in by 80 cats Felis catus over 1 year was monitored in two suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand: one suburb was completely urban, the other on the urban/forest fringe. Cat owners were asked to record and, if possible, keep the prey that their cats brought in. Rodents were the main prey brought in by domestic cats in the urban/forest fringe habitat, whereas invertebrates were the main prey in the fully urban habitat. Birds were caught in similar numbers by cats in both areas and were the second most important prey group at both study sites. However, more native birds were caught by cats in the urban/forest fringe area than in the fully urban habitat. Lizards were caught in similar numbers and were the third most important prey group in both study areas.

Among mammalian morphological specializations to arboreality, prehensile tails are the least studied. In carnivorans, two phylogenetically and ecologically distant representatives possess truly prehensile tails: the kinkajou Potos flavus, a neotropical procyonid and the binturong Arctictis binturong, a viverrid from south-east Asia. This paper examines osteological characters associated with tail prehensility by comparing carnivorans with and without prehensile tails. The prehensile-tailed taxa are characterized by: (a) a relatively longer proximal caudal region in length and number of vertebrae; (b) more robust distal caudal vertebrae, which possess expanded transverse processes. Comparable features have been also reported for prehensile-tailed primates, indicating evolutionary convergence. These features can be functionally associated with enhanced flexion–extension of the proximal part of the tail and increased strength and flexing capacity at the distal end of the tail. These tail movements are briefly described in free-ranging prehensile-tailed carnivorans.
