Volume 52 - Issue 5 - September 2024
Photo Taken by Véronique Labonté: “On May 23, 2012, activist and survivor Emir Hodžić defied local authorities by standing alone in the middle of Prijedor's central square with a white armband. The armband is a reminder of when non-Serb populations had to identify themselves with a piece of cloth in the days before they were deported or murdered. White Armband Day (Dan bijelih traka) has become an important commemorative event for memory activists and the diaspora over the years, both locally and on social media. For the past few years, several families have joined together to demand the erection of a monument in downtown Prijedor in memory of the 102 local children killed during the war. On May 31, 2022, despite last-minute restrictions imposed by local authorities, the families, supported by local NGOs, commemorated the dead themselves. They first tied white ribbons with the names of the victims on the small bridge on Ahmeta Babića Street, then marched to the city center and laid 102 roses in a circle in the middle of the public square. The names of the children and their ages echoed through the loudspeakers amidst a silent crowd.”
