Bibliometric calculations currently used to assess the quality of researchers, articles, and scientific journals have serious structural problems; many authors have noted the weakness of citation counts, because they are purely quantitative and do not differentiate between high- and low-citing papers. If a paper’s reputation is simply evaluated according to the number of its citations, then incomplete, incorrect, or controversial articles may be promoted, regardless of their relevancy. Therefore, perverse incentives are generated for researchers who may publish many incorrect or incomplete papers to achieve high impact indexes. It is essential to improve the objective criteria for automatic article-quality assessments. However, to obtain these new criteria, it is necessary to advance the programmed detection of context, polarity, and function of bibliographic references.

We present an overview of general concepts and review contributions to the solutions to problems related to these issues, with the purpose of identifying trends and suggesting possible future research directions.

Rule-based information extraction is an important approach for processing the increasingly available amount of unstructured data. The manual creation of rule-based applications is a time-consuming and tedious task, which requires qualified knowledge engineers. The costs of this process can be reduced by providing a suitable rule language and extensive tooling support. This paper presents UIMA Ruta, a tool for rule-based information extraction and text processing applications. The system was designed with focus on rapid development. The rule language and its matching paradigm facilitate the quick specification of comprehensible extraction knowledge. They support a compact representation while still providing a high level of expressiveness. These advantages are supplemented by the development environment UIMA Ruta Workbench. It provides, in addition to extensive editing support, essential assistance for explanation of rule execution, introspection, automatic validation, and rule induction. UIMA Ruta is a useful tool for academia and industry due to its open source license. We compare UIMA Ruta to related rule-based systems especially concerning the compactness of the rule representation, the expressiveness, and the provided tooling support. The competitiveness of the runtime performance is shown in relation to a popular and freely-available system. A selection of case studies implemented with UIMA Ruta illustrates the usefulness of the system in real-world scenarios.

Explicit references on Twitter to future events can be leveraged to feed a fully automatic monitoring system of real-world events. We describe a system that extracts open-domain future events from the Twitter stream. It detects future time expressions and entity mentions in tweets, clusters tweets together that overlap in these mentions above certain thresholds, and summarizes these clusters into event descriptions that can be presented to users of the system. Terms for the event description are selected in an unsupervised fashion.1 We evaluated the system on a month of Dutch tweets, by showing the top-250 ranked events found in this month to human annotators. Eighty per cent of the candidate events were indeed assessed as being an event by at least three out of four human annotators, while all four annotators regarded sixty-three per cent as a real event. An added component to complement event descriptions with additional terms was not assessed better than the original system, due to the occasional addition of redundant terms. Comparing the found events to gold-standard events from maintained calendars on the Web mentioned in at least five tweets, the system yields a recall-at-250 of 0.20 and a recall based on all retrieved events of 0.40.

Ontologising is the task of associating terms, in text, with an ontological representation of their meaning, in an ontology. In this article, we revisit algorithms that have previously been used to ontologise the arguments of semantic relations in a relationless thesaurus, resulting in a wordnet. For increased flexibility, the algorithms do not use the extraction context when selecting the most adequate synsets for each term argument. Instead, they exploit a term-based lexical network which can be established by knowledge extracted automatically, or obtained from the resource the relations are being ontologised to. On the latter idea, we made several experiments to conclude that the algorithms can be used both for wordnet creation and for their enrichment. Besides describing the algorithms with some detail, the aforementioned experiments, which target both English and Portuguese, and their results are reported and discussed.

After several decades of work on rule-based machine translation (MT) where linguists try to manually encode their knowledge about language, the time around 1990 brought a paradigm change towards automatic systems which try to learn how to translate by looking at large collections of high-quality sample translations as produced by professional translators. The first such attempts were called example- or analogy-based translation, and somewhat later the so-called statistical approach to MT was introduced. Both can be subsumed under the label data-driven approaches to MT. It took about 10 years until these self-learning systems became serious competitors of the traditional rule-based systems, and by now some of the most successful MT systems, such as Google Translate and Moses, are based on the statistical approach.

Non-native speakers of English far outnumber native speakers; English is the main language of books, newspapers, airports, air-traffic control, international business, academic conferences, science, technology, diplomacy, sports, international competitions, pop music, and advertising (British Council 2014). Online education in the form of massive online open courses is also primarily in English—even teaching English. This creates enormous amounts of text written by non-native speakers, which in turn generates a need for grammar correction and analysis. Even aside from massive online open courses, the number of English learners in Asia alone is in the tens of millions. In this paper, we provide a survey of the two main areas of existing work on non-native text analysis, prefaced by an overview of common datasets used by researchers, comparing their attributes and potential uses. Then, an introduction to native language identification follows: determining the native language of an author based on text in the second language. This section is subdivided into various techniques and a shared task on this classification problem. Next, we discuss non-native grammatical error correction—finding and modifying text to fix errors or to make it sound more fluent. Again, we discuss different methods before investigating a relevant shared task. Lastly, we end with conclusions and potential future directions. While this survey primarily focuses on detecting and correcting non-native English text, many approaches are general and can be used across any language pairing.

This article presents silhouette–attraction (Sil–Att), a simple and effective method for text clustering, which is based on two main concepts: the silhouette coefficient and the idea of attraction. The combination of both principles allows us to obtain a general technique that can be used either as a boosting method, which improves results of other clustering algorithms, or as an independent clustering algorithm. The experimental work shows that Sil–Att is able to obtain high-quality results on text corpora with very different characteristics. Furthermore, its stable performance on all the considered corpora is indicative that it is a very robust method. This is a very interesting positive aspect of Sil–Att with respect to the other algorithms used in the experiments, whose performances heavily depend on specific characteristics of the corpora being considered.

In this article we tackle the problem of multi-party conversation summarization. We investigate the role of discourse segmentation of a conversation on meeting summarization. First, an unsupervised function segmentation algorithm is proposed to segment the transcript into functionally coherent parts, such as Monologuei (which indicates a segment where speaker i is the dominant speaker, e.g., lecturing all the other participants) or Discussionx1x2, . . ., xn (which indicates a segment where speakers x1 to xn involve in a discussion). Then the salience score for a sentence is computed by leveraging the score of the segment containing the sentence. Performance of our proposed segmentation and summarization algorithms is evaluated using the AMI meeting corpus. We show better summarization performance over other state-of-the-art algorithms according to different metrics.

In this paper, we address the problem of the large coverage dictionaries of Arabic language usable both for direct human reading and automatic Natural Language Processing. For these purposes, we propose a normalized and implemented modeling, based on Lexical Markup Framework (LMF-ISO 24613) and Data Registry Category (DCR-ISO 12620), which allows a stable and well-defined interoperability of lexical resources through a unification of the linguistic concepts. Starting from the features of the Arabic language, and due to the fact that a large range of details and refinements need to be described specifically for Arabic, we follow a finely structuring strategy. Besides its richness in morphology, syntax and semantics knowledge, our model includes all the Arabic morphological patterns to generate the inflected forms from a given lemma and highlights the syntactic–semantic relations. In addition, an appropriate codification has been designed for the management of all types of relationships among lexical entries and their related knowledge. According to this model, a dictionary named El Madar1 has been built and is now publicly available on line. The data are managed by a user-friendly Web-based lexicographical workstation. This work has not been done in isolation, but is the result of a collaborative effort by an international team mainly within the ISO network during a period of eight years.

We investigate the problem of improving performance in distributional word similarity systems trained on sparse data, focusing on a family of similarity functions we call Dice-family functions (Dice 1945Ecology26(3): 297–302), including the similarity function introduced in Lin (1998Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Machine Learning, 296–304), and Curran (2004 PhD thesis, University of Edinburgh. College of Science and Engineering. School of Informatics), as well as a generalized version of Dice Coefficient used in data mining applications (Strehl 2000, 55). We propose a generalization of the Dice-family functions which uses a weight parameter α to make the similarity functions asymmetric. We show that this generalized family of functions (α systems) all belong to the class of asymmetric models first proposed in Tversky (1977Psychological Review84: 327–352), and in a multi-task evaluation of ten word similarity systems, we show that α systems have the best performance across word ranks. In particular, we show that α-parameterization substantially improves the correlations of all Dice-family functions with human judgements on three words sets, including the Miller–Charles/Rubenstein Goodenough word set (Miller and Charles 1991Language and Cognitive Processes6(1): 1–28; Rubenstein and Goodenough 1965Communications of the ACM8: 627–633).

Statistical parsers often require careful parameter tuning and feature selection. This is a nontrivial task for application developers who are not interested in parsing for its own sake, and it can be time-consuming even for experienced researchers. In this paper we present MaltOptimizer, a tool developed to automatically explore parameters and features for MaltParser, a transition-based dependency parsing system that can be used to train parser's given treebank data. MaltParser provides a wide range of parameters for optimization, including nine different parsing algorithms, an expressive feature specification language that can be used to define arbitrarily rich feature models, and two machine learning libraries, each with their own parameters. MaltOptimizer is an interactive system that performs parser optimization in three stages. First, it performs an analysis of the training set in order to select a suitable starting point for optimization. Second, it selects the best parsing algorithm and tunes the parameters of this algorithm. Finally, it performs feature selection and tunes machine learning parameters. Experiments on a wide range of data sets show that MaltOptimizer quickly produces models that consistently outperform default settings and often approach the accuracy achieved through careful manual optimization.

This paper highlights some of the recent developments in the field of machine translation using comparable corpora. We start by updating previous definitions of comparable corpora and then look at bilingual versions of continuous vector space models. Recently, neural networks have been used to obtain latent context representations with only few dimensions which are often called word embeddings. These promising new techniques cannot only be applied to parallel but also to comparable corpora. Subsequent sections of the paper discuss work specifically targeting at machine translation using comparable corpora, as well as work dealing with the extraction of parallel segments from comparable corpora. Finally, we give an overview on the design and the results of a recent shared task on measuring document comparability across languages.

We use bilingual lexicon induction techniques, which learn translations from monolingual texts in two languages, to build an end-to-end statistical machine translation (SMT) system without the use of any bilingual sentence-aligned parallel corpora. We present detailed analysis of the accuracy of bilingual lexicon induction, and show how a discriminative model can be used to combine various signals of translation equivalence (like contextual similarity, temporal similarity, orthographic similarity and topic similarity). Our discriminative model produces higher accuracy translations than previous bilingual lexicon induction techniques. We reuse these signals of translation equivalence as features on a phrase-based SMT system. These monolingually estimated features enhance low resource SMT systems in addition to allowing end-to-end machine translation without parallel corpora.

The two main classes of grammars are (a) hand-crafted grammars, which are developed by language experts, and (b) data-driven grammars, which are extracted from annotated corpora. This paper introduces a statistical method for mapping the elementary structures of a data-driven grammar onto the elementary structures of a hand-crafted grammar in order to combine their advantages. The idea is employed in the context of Lexicalized Tree-Adjoining Grammars (LTAG) and tested on two LTAGs of English: the hand-crafted LTAG developed in the XTAG project, and the data-driven LTAG, which is automatically extracted from the Penn Treebank and used by the MICA parser. We propose a statistical model for mapping any elementary tree sequence of the MICA grammar onto a proper elementary tree sequence of the XTAG grammar. The model has been tested on three subsets of the WSJ corpus that have average lengths of 10, 16, and 18 words, respectively. The experimental results show that full-parse trees with average F1-scores of 72.49, 64.80, and 62.30 points could be built from 94.97%, 96.01%, and 90.25% of the XTAG elementary tree sequences assigned to the subsets, respectively. Moreover, by reducing the amount of syntactic lexical ambiguity of sentences, the proposed model significantly improves the efficiency of parsing in the XTAG system.

We propose a language-independent word normalisation method and exemplify it on modernising historical Slovene words. Our method relies on character-level statistical machine translation (CSMT) and uses only shallow knowledge. We present relevant data on historical Slovene, consisting of two (partially) manually annotated corpora and the lexicons derived from these corpora, containing historical word–modern word pairs. The two lexicons are disjoint, with one serving as the training set containing 40,000 entries, and the other as a test set with 20,000 entries. The data spans the years 1750–1900, and the lexicons are split into fifty-year slices, with all the experiments carried out separately on the three time periods. We perform two sets of experiments. In the first one – a supervised setting – we build a CSMT system using the lexicon of word pairs as training data. In the second one – an unsupervised setting – we simulate a scenario in which word pairs are not available. We propose a two-step method where we first extract a noisy list of word pairs by matching historical words with cognate modern words, and then train a CSMT system on these pairs. In both sets of experiments, we also optionally make use of a lexicon of modern words to filter the modernisation hypotheses. While we show that both methods produce significantly better results than the baselines, their accuracy and which method works best strongly correlates with the age of the texts, meaning that the choice of the best method will depend on the properties of the historical language which is to be modernised. As an extrinsic evaluation, we also compare the quality of part-of-speech tagging and lemmatisation directly on historical text and on its modernised words. We show that, depending on the age of the text, annotation on modernised words also produces significantly better results than annotation on the original text.

We have developed a heuristic method for unsupervised parsing of unrestricted text. Our method relies on detecting certain patterns of part-of-speech tag sequences of words in sentences. This detection is based on statistical data obtained from the corpus and allows us to classify part-of-speech tags into classes that play specific roles in the parse trees. These classes are then used to construct the parse tree of new sentences via a set of deterministic rules. Aiming to asses the viability of the method on different languages, we have tested it on English, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, German, and Chinese. We have obtained a significant improvement over other unsupervised approaches for some languages, including English, and provided, as far as we know, the first results of this kind for others.

We consider automated generation of humorous texts by substitution of a single word in a given short text. In this setting, several factors that potentially contribute to the funniness of texts can be integrated into a unified framework as constraints on the lexical substitution. We discuss three types of such constraints: formal constraints concerning the similarity of sounds or spellings between the original word and the substitute, semantic or connotational constraints requiring the substitute to be a taboo word, and contextual constraints concerning the position and context of the replacement. Empirical evidence from extensive user studies using real SMSs as the corpus indicates that taboo constraints are statistically very effective, and so is a constraint requiring that the substitution takes place at the end of the text even though the effect is smaller. The effects of individual constraints are largely cumulative. In addition, connotational taboo words and word position have a strong interaction.

Keyphrases are the most important phrases of documents that make them suitable for improving natural language processing tasks, including information retrieval, document classification, document visualization, summarization and categorization. Here, we propose a supervised framework augmented by novel extra-textual information derived primarily from Wikipedia. Wikipedia is utilized in such an advantageous way that – unlike most other methods relying on Wikipedia – a full textual index of all the Wikipedia articles is not required by our approach, as we only exploit the category hierarchy and a list of multiword expressions derived from Wikipedia. This approach is not only less resource intensive, but also produces comparable or superior results compared to previous similar works. Our thorough evaluations also suggest that the proposed framework performs consistently well on multiple datasets, being competitive or even outperforming the results obtained by other state-of-the-art methods. Besides introducing features that incorporate extra-textual information, we also experimented with a novel way of representing features that are derived from the POS tagging of the keyphrase candidates.

Choosing the best word or phrase for a given context from among the candidate near-synonyms, such as slim and skinny, is a difficult language generation problem. In this paper, we describe approaches to solving an instance of this problem, the lexical gap problem, with a particular focus on affect and subjectivity; to do this we draw upon techniques from the sentiment and subjectivity analysis fields. We present a supervised approach to this problem, initially with a unigram model that solidly outperforms the baseline, with a 6.8% increase in accuracy. The results to some extent confirm those from related problems, where feature presence outperforms feature frequency, and immediate context features generally outperform wider context features. However, this latter is somewhat surprisingly not always the case, and not necessarily where intuition might first suggest; and an analysis of where document-level models are in some cases better suggested that, in our corpus, broader features related to the ‘tone’ of the document could be useful, including document sentiment, document author, and a distance metric for weighting the wider lexical context of the gap itself. From these, our best model has a 10.1% increase in accuracy, corresponding to a 38% reduction in errors. Moreover, our models do not just improve accuracy on affective word choice, but on non-affective word choice also.

Mining parallel data from comparable corpora is a promising approach for overcoming the data sparseness in statistical machine translation and other natural language processing applications. In this paper, we address the task of detecting parallel phrase pairs embedded in comparable sentence pairs. We present a novel phrase alignment approach that is designed to only align parallel sections bypassing non-parallel sections of the sentence. We compare the proposed approach with two other alignment methods: (1) the standard phrase extraction algorithm, which relies on the Viterbi path of the word alignment, (2) a binary classifier to detect parallel phrase pairs when presented with a large collection of phrase pair candidates. We evaluate the accuracy of these approaches using a manually aligned data set, and show that the proposed approach outperforms the other two approaches. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the extracted phrase pairs by using them in Arabic–English and Urdu–English translation systems, which resulted in improvements upto 1.2 Bleu over the baseline. The main contributions of this paper are two-fold: (1) novel phrase alignment algorithms to extract parallel phrase pairs from comparable sentences, (2) evaluating the utility of the extracted phrases by using them directly in the MT decoder.
