This special issue of the Netherlands Journal of Geosciences / Geologie en Mijnbouw contains the proceedings of the Conference on the Economic Geology of Suriname, held on 16 January 2015 in The Hague, the Netherlands, to honour Dr Eddie Jharap (Fig. 1), founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Staatsolie, Suriname. At this conference the President of the Royal Netherlands Geological and Mining Society (KNGMG), Drs Lucia van Geuns, awarded him the prestigious Van Waterschoot van der Gracht Medal, the highest honour available to an earth scientist in the Netherlands. Dr Jharap expressed his gratitude in a warm and humble speech which highlighted both his strong personal motivation to contribute to the development of Suriname, and his astonishing accomplishments since the 1980s in founding and developing Staatsolie.

Last year, 2015, was a good year for the Netherlands Journal of Geosciences. We maintained a steady inflow of high-quality manuscripts and published many interesting papers. We started with a special issue on Mosasaurs, and ended with a special issue on the evolution of the Vecht and Amstel rivers, illustrating the diversity of topics covered by our journal. This year we plan to publish a special issue on (Dutch) planetary geology! The prospects are that 2016 will also be fruitful year for NJG. We start with a thick issue focused on geochemistry, and there are three additional special issues under construction. We will have quite a number of regular papers as well. Their number is steadily increasing, but we would like to have more. Possibly, the next NAC congress (Dutch geoscientific meeting) in April will stimulate submission of new publications.

This special issue of the Netherlands Journal of Geosciences is dedicated to geoscientific research related to geological disposal of nuclear waste. Geological disposal of nuclear waste is generally accepted as the optimum solution to the problem, though it has always been politically a hot potato. It was the Secretary of Energy in the first Obama Administration who halted the Yucca Mountain national programme on nuclear waste disposal within six weeks of his appointment, without citing technical or safety issues or presenting alternatives (Alley & Alley, 2013). This contrasts sharply with the Finnish situation where the government granted a construction licence for a final disposal facility on 12 November 2015. Sweden is expected to follow soon.

Planetary geoscience was effectively born when Christiaan Huygens took his first look at planet Mars on Friday 28 November 1659. As one of the leading scientists of his time, Huygens was known for constructing his own telescopes to observe stars, planets and nebulae whenever the clear and spacious skies above the Netherlands allowed. Huygens observed the planet Mars during the heydays of its 1659 opposition. On the night of 28 November he succeeded in sketching the first albedo feature on a different planet in our solar system. The roughly triangular dark-coloured patch was originally christened the Hourglass Sea, suggesting it to be an area of open water. Perhaps the landscape surrounding him in the Netherlands prompted Huygens to interpret the newly discovered feature as a wet area on the planet's surface. The attribution of traits to an albedo feature on another planet based on terrestrial landscapes may well be considered as the first-ever attempt at ‘comparative planetology’. The albedo feature can still be recognised at the surface of Mars today as Syrtis Major. Any modest amateur telescope can provide a view superior to that of Huygens’, allowing the observation of the very first geological feature ever identified on another rocky planet.

The largest differentiation event in Earth and other terrestrial planets was the high-pressure, high-temperature process of metal core segregation from a silicate mantle. The abundant element silicon (Si) can be partially sequestered into the metallic core during metal–silicate differentiation, depending on pressure, temperature and planetary oxidation state. Knowledge of the Si content of a planet's core can constrain the conditions of core formation, but in the absence of direct samples from planetary cores, quantifying core Si content is challenging. One relatively new tool to study core formation in terrestrial planets is based on combining measurements of the Si stable isotopic composition of planetary crust and mantle samples with measurements of the Si stable isotope fractionation between metal and silicate at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. In this study we present the results of a small set of high-pressure, high-temperature (HPT) experiments and combine these with a review of literature data to investigate how the Si isotope fractionation behaviour between metal and silicate varies as a function specifically of experimental run time and temperature. We show that although there is no debate about the sign of fractionation, absolute values for Si isotope fractionation between metal and silicate are difficult to constrain because the experimental database remains incomplete, and because Si isotopic measurements of metals in particular suffer from the absence of a true inter-laboratory comparison. We conclude that in order to derive accurate quantitative estimates of the Si content of the core of the Earth or other planets a wide range of additional experiments will be required.

Radioactive substances and ionising radiation are used in medicine, industry, agriculture, research, education and electricity production. This generates radioactive waste. In the Netherlands, this waste is collected, treated and stored by COVRA (Centrale Organisatie Voor Radioactief Afval). After interim storage for a period of at least 100 years, radioactive waste is intended for disposal. There is a world-wide scientific and technical consensus that geological disposal represents the safest and most sustainable end point for the management of radioactive waste (e.g. Council Directive, 2011).

Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V., together with the gold mining industry, has gradually become a major contributor to the Surinamese economy since the decline of the alumina industry. In the last 35 years, about 110MMbbls (million barrels) of crude oil have been produced. Staatsolie is now in the early stages of fulfilling its VISION 2030, which is not only aimed at increased exploration and production but also at power generation, further diversification and regional expansion. The basis for achieving these goals is accelerated on- and offshore exploration, followed by growth in production. The offshore region remains a frontier area, with only a few wells drilled. Current production is about 17,000bopd (barrels of oil per day). Between 2007 and 2014, Staatsolie has spent about US$120 million on exploration. An integrated study for the Suriname–Guyana Basin carried out by Staatsolie in 2009 demonstrated the upside potential of this basin from a source rock potential perspective, which has been proven by both the Liza-1 oil discovery offshore of Guyana in 2015 and the Zaedyus-1 oil discovery offshore of French Guiana in 2011.

Staatsolie is now focusing its efforts on the near-shore area, where it recently concluded a five-well drilling programme, following a 3-D seismic survey. In the deep offshore area, international oil companies (IOCs) are actively pursuing the next discovery in the Atlantic Margin, partly driven by the conjugate-margin theory geologically linking South America and West Africa.

Staatsolie is also attempting to increase recovery from the most mature and largest oilfield, the Tambaredjo Field, through Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technologies of which polymer flooding is deemed the most suitable, with estimated potential incremental recovery of up to 12%.

Staatsolie recognises the role of a highly skilled and motivated workforce and therefore continues investing in its people through internal as well as external training. Thirty-five years after it was founded by Mr Eddy Jharap, a geologist by training and the first Managing Director of the company, it can be stated that Staatsolie has taken its place in Surinamese society as a significant contributor to the economy, a preferred employer, a nucleus for industrial spin-off and an example for other companies.

Sedimentological data acquired by thin section petrography is a rich source of information to better understand and interpret depositional environments that are dominated by fine-grained deposits. This study provides an evaluation of the sedimentological and geochemical changes recorded over Upper Viséan to Lower Namurian successions preserved in a core section from a well drilled in the southern part of the Netherlands. Facies analysis and the recognition of microfacies associations allow detailed interpretations of depositional environments. Interpretation of additional geochemical data acquired by portable X-ray fluorescence analyses has resulted in a chemostratigraphic zonation for the core section. The zonation reflects stratigraphic changes in the mineralogy of the sedimentary successions. Integration of the microfacies associations and the chemostratigraphic zonation has led to the identification of three so-called depositional zones, which show the development of depositional settings from Late Viséan to Early Namurian times. Depositional Zone 1 consists of fine-grained turbiditic limestones and mudstones deposited in a distal carbonate ramp setting during Latest Viséan times. The overlying Depositional Zone 2 corresponds to the Geverik Member (Lower Namurian) and is particularly heterogeneous in geochemical and lithological terms: the zone reflects a complex interplay between different parameters such as sediment source, transport mechanisms and oxygen content that are assumed to be governed by fluctuating sea levels and changing depositional environments (from basinal to shallow marine settings). Sandy lenticular mudstones are predominant in the lower part of Depositional Zone 2 and show that sedimentation was via erosive bedload, whilst the common fossiliferous mudstones present within the upper part of the same zone yield evidence for increased endobenthic activity in dysoxic conditions. The successions assigned to Depositional Zone 3 ( = Epen Formation – Namurian) are the products of cyclic sedimentation of a terrestrial sourced delta.

This study presents the 3-D geometry of the Oligocene Rupel Clay Member and a review of its depositional environment based on new and published data. The Rupel Clay Member (RCM) is a clay layer in the Dutch subsurface which is informally known as the Boom Clay. New depth and thickness maps show that the member is present in nearly the whole subsurface of the onshore Netherlands to a depth of about 1500 m. The thickness of the member is variable but rarely exceeds 125 m. We identified three subunits: RCM-U, with a thickness of 15–40 m; RCM-M, with a thickness of 40–90 m; and RCM-L with a thickness of 25–50 m. The Rupel Clay Member is not a homogeneous clay; both vertical and lateral grain-size trends are present. These trends match with general palaeogeographic trends which foresee near-shore facies in the south and southeast of the onshore Netherlands and a more distal setting when moving northward. The three subunits are correlated with global climatic and regional tectonic events, which have mainly affected marginal facies. Faults are known to cut through the clay layer, but have not been mapped. A mismatch of lithostratigraphic nomenclature between the Netherlands and neighbouring countries is present. Part of the solution for this mismatch lies in the proper interpretation of well data in the Netherlands, both on- and offshore.

Minerals are the building blocks of clastic sediments and play an important role with respect to the physico-chemical properties of the sediment and the lithostratigraphy of sediments. This paper aims to provide an overview of the mineralogy (including solid organic matter) of sediments as well as suspended matter as found in the Netherlands (and some parts of Belgium). The work is based on a review of the scientific literature published over more than 100 years. Cenozoic sediments are addressed together with suspended matter and recent sediments of the surface water systems because they form a geoscientific continuum from material subject to transport via recently settled to aged material. Most attention is paid to heavy minerals, clay minerals, feldspars, Ca carbonates, reactive Fe minerals (oxides, siderite, sulphides, glauconite) and solid organic matter because they represent the dominant minerals and their properties form a main issue in subsurface and water management. When possible and relevant, the amounts, provenance, relationship with grain size distribution, early diagenesis and palaeohydrological evolution are described. Tables with statistical data about the mineral contents and isotopic composition of carbonates and organic matter are presented as overviews. The review on the mineralogy of Dutch fluvial and marine environments is more extensive than that for the other sedimentary environments because the first two have been studied much more intensively than the others and they also form the larger part of the Dutch deposits. The focus is on the natural background mineralogy of Dutch sediments, but this is hard for recent sediments, largely because the massive hydraulic infrastructure present in the Netherlands has probably also affected the mineralogy and geochemistry of sediments deposited in recent centuries. Many findings are summarised, several of which lead to more general insights for the Dutch situation. Ca carbonates in sediments often have several provenances and thus must be considered as mixtures. Dolomite is commonly present in addition to calcite. The importance of biotite as weatherable mica is unclear. Weathering of heavy minerals plays some role but it is unclear in which way it affects the heavy mineral associations. Clays are usually dominated by illite, smectite and their interstratified variant, while kaolinite is usually below 20% and chlorite below 5%. Vermiculite is a minor constituent in fluvial clays and its illitisation presumably happens during early diagenesis in the marine environment. Opaque Fe hydroxides can be present in addition to Fe oxyhydroxide coatings and both will play a role in redox chemistry as reactive Fe minerals. Feldspars in marine sediments must be present but they have not been properly studied. The genesis of rattle stones and carbonate concretions has not been completely elucidated. The fraction of terrigeneous organic matter in estuarine and coastal marine sediments is substantial. The available data and information are spread irregularly over the country and the reviewed information discussed in this paper is derived from relatively small-scale studies dealing with a limited amount of analysed samples. Much information is available from the Scheldt estuaries in the southwestern part of the Netherlands partly due to the severe contamination of the Western Scheldt in recent decades.

Recent measurements of the chemical and isotopic composition of lunar samples indicate that the Moon's bulk composition shows great similarities with the composition of the silicate Earth. Moon formation models that attempt to explain these similarities make a wide variety of assumptions about the properties of the Earth prior to the formation of the Moon (the proto-Earth), and about the necessity and properties of an impactor colliding with the proto-Earth. This paper investigates the effects of the proto-Earth's mass, oblateness and internal core-mantle differentiation on its moment of inertia. The ratio of angular momentum and moment of inertia determines the stability of the proto-Earth and the binding energy, i.e. the energy needed to make the transition from an initial state in which the system is a rotating single body with a certain angular momentum to a final state with two bodies (Earth and Moon) with the same total angular momentum, redistributed between Earth and Moon. For the initial state two scenarios are being investigated: a homogeneous (undifferentiated) proto-Earth and a proto-Earth differentiated in a central metallic and an outer silicate shell; for both scenarios a range of oblateness values is investigated. Calculations indicate that a differentiated proto-Earth would become unstable at an angular momentum L that exceeds the total angular momentum of the present-day Earth–Moon system (L0) by factors of 2.5–2.9, with the precise maximum dependent on the proto-Earth's oblateness. Further limitations are imposed by the Roche limit and the logical condition that the separated Earth–Moon system should be formed outside the proto-Earth. This further limits the L values of the Earth–Moon system to a maximum of about L/L0 = 1.5, at a minimum oblateness (a/c ratio) of 1.2. These calculations provide boundary conditions for the main classes of Moon-forming models. Our results show that at the high values of L used in recent giant impact models (1.8 < L/L0 < 3.1), the proposed proto-Earths are unstable before (Cuk & Stewart, 2012) or immediately after (Canup, 2012) the impact, even at a high oblateness (the most favourable condition for stability). We conclude that the recent attempts to improve the classic giant impact hypothesis by studying systems with very high values of L are not supported by the boundary condition calculations in this work. In contrast, this work indicates that the nuclear explosion model for Moon formation (De Meijer et al., 2013) fulfills the boundary conditions and requires approximately one order of magnitude less energy than originally estimated. Hence in our view the nuclear explosion model is presently the model that best explains the formation of the Moon from predominantly terrestrial silicate material.

The Suriname–Guyana and Ghana–Ivorian Basins exhibit strong geological similarities which are of interest from a petroleum exploration point of view. These include (1) a well-developed system of Late Cretaceous erosional canyons allowing coarse-grained shallow-water clastics to enter the deep marine basin to form attractive turbidite exploration targets; (2) a broad shelf with strong longshore currents which sort and transport coarse clastics into the canyon heads; (3) an organic-rich Cenomanian–Turonian hydrocarbon source rock which is thermally mature in the centre of the basin; and (4) a series of extensional fault-networks along the shelf margin that extend upwards from the Rift Sequence into the overlying Drift Sequence and which, along with the canyon geometries, enable migrating oil and gas to accumulate in combination structural and stratigraphic traps. In June 2007, Tullow and its partners made an important discovery in offshore Ghana, at Mahogany, which subsequently became the giant Jubilee field. Tullow is currently applying the same geoscientific technologies in offshore Suriname in the search for analogous subtle combination traps.

Raman spectroscopy appears to be an ideal technique for the initial detection of biomarkers, molecules that are potentially indicative of life on planetary bodies elsewhere in our solar system. Carotenoids are particularly useful biomarkers as they are used widely across the species, relatively resistant to breakdown and no inorganic source is known. They are used by microorganisms in their cell membranes for protection against UV radiation. In this paper we focus on the detection of carotenoids in microorganisms within a mineral matrix. We compare the Raman signatures of pure compounds with those of laboratory-made mixtures of β-carotene and minerals. Carotenoids covered by 2.5 mm of translucent calcite or 40 mm of transparent halite were detected using a conventional confocal Raman microscope. To improve sensitivity and hence detection levels, Raman measurements were successfully performed under resonant conditions. Raman analysis can be compromised by fluorescence interference. Data are presented to show how the contribution from the fluorescent background in the Raman spectra can be reduced when making use of gated detection in time-resolved Raman spectroscopy. Overall, this study demonstrates some of the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a method for the detection of (past) life signatures during future planetary missions without taking current technical limitations such as instrumental size into account as recent rapid technical developments suggest these limitations will be resolved in time.

Bauxite, the raw material of aluminum, has been one of the economically vital natural resources for Suriname. Mining operations started about a century ago, and subsequent development of a refinery industry and hydro-electric power made Suriname one of the foremost bauxite and alumina producers worldwide for a long period of time. This paper presents a concise survey of the main geological attributes of its bauxite deposits and examines significant aspects in the development of mining in the country where alumina dominated the export revenues until a decade ago. The lateritic bauxite deposits are spread across the northern part of the country and developed on various parent rocks during Late Cretaceous–Early Tertiary times. Bauxites in the coastal lowlands formed on Cenozoic sedimentary deposits, whereas plateau bauxites originated on various crystalline rocks in inland regions of the Precambrian Guiana Shield. The composition of parent rocks and timing of bauxitisation point to a genetic correspondence with West African bauxites and a strong control of paleoclimatic conditions on the distribution and properties of bauxite in both regions. The more accessible bauxite deposits in the coastal lowlands are almost mined out, whereas the plateau bauxites have been extensively explored but have not been brought into production to date. For economic and environmental reasons, the future of the bauxite industry in Suriname is currently uncertain.

The spatial distribution of porosity and permeability of the Rupel Clay Member is of key importance to evaluate the spatial variation of its sealing capacity and groundwater flow condition. There are only a limited number of measured porosity and permeability data of the Rupel Clay Member in the onshore Netherlands and these data are restricted to shallow depths in the order of tens of metres below surface. Grain sizes measured by laser diffraction and SediGraph® in samples of the Rupel Clay Member taken from boreholes spread across the country were used to generate new porosity and permeability data for the Rupel Clay Member located at greater burial depth. Effective stress and clay content are important parameters in the applied grain-size based calculations of porosity and permeability.

The calculation method was first tested on measured data of the Belgian Boom Clay. The test results showed good agreement between calculated permeability and measured hydraulic conductivity for depths exceeding 200m.

The spatial variation in lithology, heterogeneity and also burial depth of the Rupel Clay Member in the Netherlands are apparent in the variation of the calculated permeability. The samples from the north of the country consist almost entirely of muds and as a consequence show little lithology-related variation in permeability. The vertical variation in permeability in the more heterogeneous Rupel Clay Member in the southern and east-southeastern part of the country can reach several orders of magnitude due to increased permeability of the coarser-grained layers.

Remote sensing observations and rover missions have documented the presence of sulphate-rich mineral associations on Mars. Many of these minerals are paleo-indicators of hydrous, acidic and oxidising environments that must have prevailed in Mars´ distant past, contrary to the present conditions. Furthermore, occurrences of silica together with high Cl and Br concentrations in Martian soils and rocks represent fingerprints of chemically atypical fluids involved in processes operating on the surface or at shallow depth. From field observations at representative active volcanoes in subduction settings, supported by geochemical modelling, we demonstrate that volcanic hydrothermal systems are capable of producing Mars-like secondary mineral assemblages near lakes, springs and fumaroles through the action of acidic fluids. Water–gas-rock interactions, together with localised flow paths of water and fumarolic gas emitted from associated subaerial vents, lead to deposition of a range of sulphates, including gypsum, jarosite, alunite, epsomite and silica. Evaporation, vapour separation and fluid mixing in (near-) surface environments with strong gradients in temperature and fluid chemistry further promote the diversity of secondary minerals. The mineralogical and chemical marks are highly variable in space and time, being subject to fluctuations in ambient conditions as well as to changes in the status of volcanic-hydrothermal activity. It is concluded that active processes in modern volcanic-geothermal systems may be akin to those that created several of the sulphate-rich terrains in the early history of Mars.

Samples from Rupel Clay across the Netherlands were analysed for the assessment of its heterogeneity in geochemistry and mineralogy. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and bulk and clay fraction X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of 152 samples from 17 different cores are presented and statistically interpreted. The results show a wide variation in the quartz, feldspar, clay mineral and carbonate content between the different samples. Factor analysis showed that the main variance between the samples can be explained by the clay mineral and quartz concentration, the carbonate content and pyrite plus organic matter. In the south of the Netherlands, the Rupel Clay is more quartz-rich and coarse grained. In addition, the clay is heterogeneous, varying with location and depth, consistent with observations for Belgium Boom Clay. Towards the north, the Rupel Clay becomes more clay-rich, finer grained and more homogeneous, both laterally and with depth. In addition, the clay has a relatively high carbonate and organic matter content. The pyrite content does not show any trends with location and depth. The differences between north and south are explained by the variations in depositional setting within the southern North Sea Basin.

Humans have played an important role in fluvial systems because of the impact of their land-use activities, frequently leading to degradation of environmental conditions. Rivers, which are the primary agents in sediment transport, have thus been subject to changes in sediment fluxes. The Suriname River has been affected by anthropogenic activities since colonial times, and has experienced strong discharge and sediment-load changes since the construction of the Afobaka Dam in 1964. The river's estuary sediments largely consist of fine-grained sediments, originating, ultimately, from the Amazon River and transported by the strong tidal current. The influence of this tidal current is diminished at the head of the estuary, allowing the river flow to become dominant. Also remarkable is the interaction of the Suriname River and the westward-migrating mudbanks which is evident in the changing magnitude and volume of Braamspunt, a mudcape located at the mouth of the estuary. The regulated discharge of the river results in a change of the river's morphology, resulting, among other things, in the growth of river bars.
