Early Christian prophecy, a subject long neglected by New Testament scholarship, has recently become the focus of numerous articles and monographs. Though the literary sources for our knowledge of early Christian prophecy are, for the most part, fragmentary, scattered, difficult to correlate and enigmatic, progress in research can be made through the patient examination, comparison and interpretation of the relevant data. The major literary witnesses for the phenomenon of early Christian prophecy are Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, the Apocalypse of John, the Didache and the Shepherd of Hermas. These documents all diverge from one another in temporal, geographical as well as ideological ways; the portrait of Christian prophecy which they exhibit also diverges to such an extent that the phenomenon of Christian prophecy, or the Christian prophet, or the history of Christian prophecy cannot yet be synthesized.

The question, What did Paul know about Jesus of Nazareth?, has long been debated by students of the New Testament. The debate has not issued in any consensus. Indeed, critical appraisals of Paul's relation to the Jesus of history and to traditions about him have been unusually disparate. Thus, on the one side, W. D. Davies has argued that ‘Paul is steeped in the mind and words of his Lord.’ On the other side, R. Bultmann could claim that ‘the teaching of the historical Jesus plays no role, or practically none, in Paul’. The contrast between these two assertions is puzzling, and all the more so as neither can be regarded as idiosyncratic: Davies is not alone in avowing that sayings of and traditions about Jesus were of momentous significance for Paul, and it is not difficult to find critics at one with Bultmann. Moreover, as our two quotations do not simply represent two circles of opinion but also mark poles between which appears a variety of viewpoints, matters are even further complicated.

Among the materials utilised to reinforce the cover of Codex VII from Nag Hammadi there are three inscribed papyrus fragments containing definite dates: a receipt dated 341 A.D., another of 346, and a deed of surety dated to 348. This provides a clear and unambiguous terminus a quo for the manufacture of this codex, although the fixing of a more precise date remains problematical. We do not know how long a receipt would be retained before it was discarded for use as scrap. As it happens, there is one case among the fragments from the cover of this codex in which the recipient of a letter has used the verso for a letter of his own. Neither however is dated, so that we do not know the interval between them. They therefore provide no help in this respect.

Unter dieser Überschrift erschien im letzten Band der NTS (S. 585–592) ein Aufsatz von H. W. Bartsch, der nicht ohne Ergänzung bleiben kann, zumal er als Eröffnung des Heftes gedruckt wurde. Denn er geht von nicht ausreichenden Voraussetzungen aus, trägt aber seine Folgerungen mit solcher Sicherheit vor, daß mancher sie vielleicht als tatsächlich zutreffend übernehmen wird.

Das Gesetzesverständnis des Paulus ist in letzter Zeit wieder in den Brennpunkt der Diskussion getreten. Dabei scheint mir über dem systematischen Interesse an der inneren Einheit der untereinander so spannungsreichen Aussagen die einfache historische Frage, ob Paulus denn wirklich in all seinen Briefen eine durchweg einheitliche Konzeption zeige, immer noch zu wenig Gewicht zu erhalten. Zwar verlockt der integrale Charakter des Römerbriefs dazu, die hier zweifellos vorhandene, im Zusammenhang vorgetragene Konzeption als Rahmen zu benutzen, in den sich die Aussagen der übrigen Briefe einordnen lassen. Aber auf diesem Wege liegt zugleich die Gefahr nah, daß, die Aussagen der übrigen Briefe zu wenig in ihrem je eigenen Skopos zur Geltung kommen, weil sie dem des Römerbriefs zu- und eingeordnet werden und so ihre Eigenart, ja u.U. auch manche Gegensätzlichkeit verlieren. Der umgekehrten Betrachtungsweise kommt jedenfalls zunächst der methodische Primat zu: die Briefe des Paulus in chronologischer Reihenfolge durchzumustern, so daß die Aussagen des Römerbriefs erst am Schluß ihren Ort bekommen. Damit öffnet sich zumindest die Möglichkeit einer Entwicklung im Denken des Paulus. Die folgende Skizze soll ein Beitrag dazu sein.

1. What does Gal. 1–2 tell us about the relationship between Paul and the Jerusalem apostles during the ‘tunnel’ period between his conversion and his earliest correspondence? That is one of the key questions relating to the beginnings of Christianity which has never achieved a completely satisfactory resolution. It is clear enough that in Galatians itself Paul is striving to assert his independence from Jerusalem – that is hardly to be disputed. But that explanation has always left a number of puzzling loose ends. It is certainly a necessary explanation but has proved insufficient in itself to explain all that Paul says. We may think, for example, of the admission in 2. 2 that the decision of the Jerusalem apostles regarding Paul's gospel could have rendered his missionary work useless; and the awkward syntax of 2. 3–5 has given rise to various theses at odds with the clear overall thrust of these two chapters.

The use of Ioudaioi in the Fourth Gospel (hereafter, FG) has attracted much scholarly attention. It is a consistent conclusion of such investigation that the term Ioudaioi in the gospel has a variety of meanings. It is also noted and generally agreed upon that one of the ways in which the term is used is unique to John among New Testament authors and indeed among ancient authors in general; it is this unique usage of Ioudaioi which has been the focus of the investigation. However if we look only at this peculiarly Johannine use of Ioudaioi we find that scholars have disagreed both about which texts within the gospel constitute this usage and also about the identity of the persons referred to by the term. Some authors have seen this usage as referring to the entire Jewish nation composed of both the common people and the narrower circle of religious authorities. Other scholars have considered the term to refer exclusively to religious authorities.

Of those who in the 19th Century applied the historical method to the study of the New Testament and the early church none were more important than Ferdinand Christian Baur and Joseph Barber Lightfoot. My intention in this paper is to compare them and the outstanding contributions they made to our knowledge of the period with which they dealt. I do this in the hope of recalling for our profit some of the history of New Testament study and of making the point that New Testament study is, or ought to be, a field for international cooperation rather than international rivalry. At first I hoped that my method, of considering what each of these great men made of a particularly obscure piece of New Testament history, might lead not only to deeper understanding of how historians work but also to a fresh consideration and evaluation of the piece in question; it has proved impossible to go so far within the space available. My underlying concern is, however, with the problem of early Christian history. My title I borrow from the Latin version of a tract by Lucian, Πως δείἱστορίαν συγγρ⋯φειν. Lucian will, to my regret, occupy a smaller part of the paper than I originally intended, but having borrowed the title I cannot omit him altogether.

The Miracle of the Bread is recorded in each of the four gospels, but in both Mark and Matthew there are two separate accounts. These two accounts of the same miracle have attracted great interest. Up to the present day, the theory that these accounts are records of two different events has been held by many. On the other hand, since the end of the nineteenth century another theory that they are two traditions of the same miracle is also being upheld. The basis for the latter theory is the fact that the two parallel groups of pericopae in Mark 6. 31–8. 26 seem to derive from two groups of traditions, and that in the second miracle of the bread, although it is right after the first one, the disciples are at a loss just the same as at the time of the previous miracle.

Die These, die hier erörtert werden soll, lautet: Die Versuchungsgeschichte Matt. 4. 1–11 stammt nicht aus der Redenquelle Q, sondern ist eine eigene Schöpfung des Evangelisten. Sie ist angeregt durch die Versuchungsge-schichte des Markus (1. 12 f.) und konzipiert als ein schriftgelehrtes Streitgespräch in Auseinandersetzung mit dem Judentum. Grundlage sind die Versuchungen Israels auf seinem Wüstenzug.

Das Anliegen dieses methodologischen Aufsatzes ist bescheiden, zugleich aber anspruchsvoll und schwierig, bescheiden, weil die viel verhandelte Materie der neutestamentlichen Gleichnisse und die unterschiedlichen Auslegungsmodelle in aller Kürze im methodischen Ansatz referiert und kritisch gewürdigt werden sollen, anspruchsvoll (und in gebotener Kürze angemessen kaum durchführbar) ist dieser Versuch, weil exemplarisch gezeigt werden soll, was linguistisch orientierte Exegese leisten könnte und wie sie historisch-kritische Methoden integrierend zu reflektierteren und stärker kontrollierbaren Ergebnissen kommt, vielleicht auch neue Einsichten vermittelt. Schwierig ist dieses Unterfangen vor allem, weil es die linguistisch Methode (und Terminologie) nicht gibt, sie sich nach B. van Iersel als ‘ein unfaßbares und vielköpfiges Ungeheuer’ gebärdet, sie ‘mehr von einem Lebewesen als von einem Bauwerk an sich zu haben (scheint)’, das ‘unablässig in Entwicklung und Bewegung’ ist. Doch Sicherheit durch Flucht oder Enthaltsamkeit ist nach van Iersel abzulehnen, es bieibt nur der ‘Versuch, den Drachen zu zähmen’, ‘die Linguistik als Hilfswissenschaft’ der ‘exegetischen Arbeit dienstbar zu machen’.

Il est fait allusion aux Juifs de Rome en deux endroits du Nouveau Testament: dans l'Epître aux Romains et dans les Actes des Apôtres. Le plus explicite de ces deux textes est le passage final des Actes (28. 16–31), consacré aux deux années durant lesquelles l'Apôtre Paul séjourna à Rome sous garde militaire. Et il est intéressant de remarquer que dans ce passage Luc oublie complètement la communauté chrétienne, qui devait pourtant exister et être très vivante, comme le prouve la longue Lettre précédemment adressée par l'Apôtre à cette même communauté. L'attention se concentre seulement sur les Juifs de la Ville. En outre, déjà dans Rm. les termes 'Iουδαιος (11 fois) et 'Iσρα⋯λ (11 fois aussi) étaient plus caractéristiques que dans tout autre écrit paulinien, en même temps que certains thèmes typique en rapport étroit avec la problématique suscitée par la position du Judaïsme à l'égard du nouveau message évangelique. Il est certainement permis d'apercevoir là un signe d'attention spéciale de la part de Paul non seulement à l'égard du peuple d'Israël en général, mais en particulier envers cette communauté chrétienne de Rome, qui était d'origine juive, sinon envers les Juifs romains eux-mêmes.

Les mss. grecs, dont nous allons examiner les variantes pour Jacques, sont tous médiévaux, donc tardifs. Plusieurs d'entre eux ont des états de texte apparentés: il s'agit d'un groupe de minuscules apparu lors d'un classement antérieur, fait à partir d'une collation de 498 états de texte sur 25 lieux variants de Jacques, et complété par des témoins absents de la collation ou sans parenté évidente avec le groupe. Au départ, l'intérêt de ce groupe est d'occuper une place originale par rapport aux deux types de texte admis, le lsquo;syro-byzantin’ et l'‘alexandrin’. Nous avons disposé, pour collationner 239 lieux variants, de l'apparat de Von Soden et des collations de Scrivener et de K. Clark. Dans la mesure o< ces sources sont fiables – et nous le supposerons pour cette étude –, nous tâcherons de répondre à deux questions: ce groupe est-il homogéne? Quelle est l'ancienneté possible de ses leçons les plus caractéristiques? Accessoirement, nous reviendrons sur le classement de Von Soden, pour juger de son bien-fondé en ce qui concerne notre Epître.

For the members of this Society one need not belabour the significance of Origen's NT quotations both for the history of the NT text in general as well as for the local texts of Alexandria and Caesarea in particular. Indeed his erudition, prolific writings and long residence both in Alexandria and Caesarea combine to give him a unique place in the history of this discipline.

Röm 1. 18–32 bilden den ersten Abschnitt eines längeren Argumentationsgangs; er führt bis 3. 20, danach nimmt Paulus die These von der Rechtfertigung aus Glauben (1. 16 f.) wieder auf. In diesem Argumentationsgang (1. 18–3. 20) legt Paulus das Scheitern und die Erlösungsbedürftigkeit der Menschheit dar; er erläutert die negative Voraussetzung der Heilszuwendung, und zwar mit besonderer Blickrichtung auf den tora-frommen Juden. Die Argumentation berührt das Fundament sowohl der paulinischen Theologie (speziell seiner Soteriologie) als auch der gegnerischen Position. An der Stringenz der Gedankenführung hängt zwar nicht die Wahrheit des Evangeliums selbst, wohl aber die Einsicht in diese Wahrheit.

A deeply-rooted affliction plagues our commentaries on the Gospel of Mark. The problem is this: no contemporary commentaries systematically cite traditions in Graeco-Roman literature as well as traditions in Jewish literature to explicate the text of the Gospel of Mark. There should be no misunderstanding. The interpreter must not forsake intricate analysis of Jewish traditions in order to turn to Graeco-Roman literature. Rather, interpreters should glean insights from Graeco-Roman literature as well as Jewish literature to explain features that usually are not explored in the text.

Similarities have occasionally been noted between the so-called ‘High Priestly Prayer’ of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel and the ‘Lord’ Prayer’ as found in Luke and, more particularly, in Matthew and the Didache.

In a previous study ‘How Many Cock-Crowings? The Problem of Harmonistic Text-Variants’ I raised the question of ‘harmonistic’ readings in synoptic texts. When dealing with the triple tradition we have been trained at points in a gospel where there are two possible readings, one of which agrees with the other two gospels and one of which does not, to favour the odd man out. In that instance I argued that the byzantine text of Mark with its two crowings had got out of step with Matthew and Luke because of an accidental interpolation into its text, and that the ‘harmonistic’ reading was in fact original. More often, however, the byzantine text of one gospel is suspected of getting into step with the other two through harmonistic changes. But it is unwise to assume this too readily, as may be illustrated from the most notorious example: the case of the rich young man in Matthew 19. 16, 17. This example raises sharply two questions: What is the relation between textual criticism and the synoptic problem? And what place should be given to supposed harmonization in assessing readings?
