In this paper we discuss the shape of the quadrature domain of a signed measure for harmonic functions. It is known that the quadrature domain of a positive measure with small support is like a ball if the total measure is large enough. We show that, on the contrary, if the measure is not positive then the quadrature domain can be close to an arbitrary domain. This follows from a lemma concerning linear combinations of harmonic measures.

In this paper we study the multiplicity of non-trivial solutions to a class of nonlinear boundary-value problems of Kirchhoff type. We prove existence results when the problem has nonlinearities with subcritical and with critical Caffarelli–Kohn–Nirenberg exponent.

This paper considers the behaviour of a quotient map between Fréchet spaces concerning the lifting of bounded sets. The main result shows that a quotient map between Fréchet spaces that lifts bounded sets with closure (or equivalently such that its strong transpose is a topological isomorphism) must also lift bounded sets without closure.

This paper deals with the problem of constructing multidimensional biorthogonal periodic multiwavelets from a given pair of biorthogonal periodic multiresolutions. Biorthogonal polyphase splines introduced to reduce the problem to a matrix extension problem, and an algorithm for solving the matrix extension problem is derived. Sufficient conditions for collections of periodic multiwavelets to form a pair of biorthogonal Riesz bases of the entire function space are also obtained.

We prove three results concerning the oscillation near a ray of solutions to (*)w″ + Aw = 0, where A is an entire function. The first result assumes that A is a polynomial and gives an upper bound on the number of its real zeros if (*) admits a solution with only real zeros and infinitely many. The second result proves that for A of finite order a solution w to (*) has “few” zeros “near” a ray if and only if the same is true for w′. In the full linear theory of thermoelasticity there is a coupling between the thermal and the purely mechanical effects so that not only does a nonuniform distribution of temperature in the solid produce a state of stress but dynamical body forces or applied surface tractions produce variations in temperature throughout the body. In a recent paper (Eason and Sneddon, (2)) an account was given of the calculation of the dynamic stresses produced in elastic bodies, both infinite and semi-infinite, by uneven heating. In this paper we shall consider the propagation of thermal stresses in an infinite medium when, in addition to heat sources, there are present body forces which vary with the time.

We classify pointed Hopf algebras with finite Gelfand–Kirillov dimension whose infinitesimal braiding has dimension 2 but is not of diagonal type, or equivalently is a block. These Hopf algebras are new and turn out to be liftings of either a Jordan or a super Jordan plane over a nilpotent-by-finite group.

Let R be a semiprime ring with the extended centroid C and Q the maximal right ring of quotients of R. Set [y, x]1 = [y, x] = yx − xy for x, y ∈ Q and inductively [y, x]k = [[y, x]k−1, x] for k > 1. Suppose that f : R → Q is an additive map satisfying [f(x), x]n = 0 for all x ∈ R, where n is a fixed positive integer. Then it can be shown that there exist λ ∈ C and an additive map μ : R → C such that f(x) = λx + μ(x) for all x ∈ R. This gives the affirmative answer to the unsolved problem of such functional identities initiated by Brešar in 1996.

Given a left Noetherian ring $R$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition in order that a complex of $R$-modules be DG-injective. Using this result we prove that if $(K_i)_{i\in I}$ is a family of DG-injective complexes of left $R$-modules and $K$ is the $\aleph_1$-product of $(K_i)_{i\in I}$ (i.e. $K\subset\prod_{i\in I}K_i$ is such that, for each $n$, $K^n\subset\prod_{i\in I}K_i^n$ consists of all $(x_i)_{i\in I}$ such that $\{i\mid x_i\neq0\}$ is at most countable), then $K$ is DG-injective.

Just like group actions are represented by group automorphisms, Lie algebra actions are represented by derivations: up to isomorphism, a split extension of a Lie algebra $B$ by a Lie algebra $X$ corresponds to a Lie algebra morphism $B\to {\mathit {Der}}(X)$ from $B$ to the Lie algebra ${\mathit {Der}}(X)$ of derivations on $X$. In this article, we study the question whether the concept of a derivation can be extended to other types of non-associative algebras over a field ${\mathbb {K}}$, in such a way that these generalized derivations characterize the ${\mathbb {K}}$-algebra actions. We prove that the answer is no, as soon as the field ${\mathbb {K}}$ is infinite. In fact, we prove a stronger result: already the representability of all abelian actions – which are usually called representations or Beck modules – suffices for this to be true. Thus, we characterize the variety of Lie algebras over an infinite field of characteristic different from $2$ as the only variety of non-associative algebras which is a non-abelian category with representable representations. This emphasizes the unique role played by the Lie algebra of linear endomorphisms $\mathfrak {gl}(V)$ as a representing object for the representations on a vector space $V$.

In this paper we prove that the states of a unital Banach algebra generate the dual Banach space as a linear space (Theorem 2). This is a result of R. T. Moore (4, Theorem 1(a)) who uses a decomposition of measures in his proof. In the proof given here the measure theory is replaced by a Hahn-Banach separation argument. We shall let A denote a unital Banach algebra over the complex field, and D(1) denote {f ∈ A′: ‖f‖ = f(1) = 1} where A′ is the dual of A. The motivation of Moore's results is the theorem that in a C*-algebra every continuous linear functional is a linear combination of four states (the states are the elements of D(1)) (see (2, 2.6.4, 2.1.9, 1.1.10)).
