A form of integration of tensors will be introduced here, which will preserve the character of a tensor when so integrated.

We consider a subclass of the Dirichlet series studied by Chandrasekharan and Narasimhan in (1). Our objective is to generalize some identities due to Landau (3) concerning r2(n), the number of representations of the positive integer n as the sum of 2 squares. We shall also give a slight extension of Theorem III in (1).

The primary object of this paper is to prove the two theorems stated below, the first of which generalises a result of Copson (1).

We show results on Lp-spectral multipliers for Maxwell operators with bounded measurable coefficients. We also present similar results for the Stokes operator with Hodge boundary conditions and the Lamé system. Here, we rely on resolvent estimates recently established by Mitrea and Monniaux.

A near-ring N is defined to be left bipotent if Na = Na2 for each a in N. Many properties of such near-rings are proved in Section 1, and results of Chandran (4) are generalised. Most of the results are different from, and contrary to, the ring case. Necessary and sufficient conditions have also been obtained under which such near-rings become regular. Section 2 deals with left bipotent near-rings without zero divisors. Some structure theorems for direct sum decompositions and J(N) = (0) are proved and it is shown that for a left bipotent S-near-ring, the singular ‘set’ S(N) = 0. Necessary examples and counter examples are supplied.

The theory of joint spectra for commuting operators in a Hilbert space has recently been studied by several authors (Vasilescu [11,12], Curto [4,5], and Cho-Takaguchi[2,3]). In this paper we willuse the definition by Taylor [10] of the joint spectrum to show that thejoint spectrum is determined by the action of certain "Laplacians"(cf. Curto [4,5]) of a chain-complex of Hilbert spaces.

The regular Sturm–Liouville problem

$$ \tau y:=-y''+qy=\lambda y\quad\text{on }[0,1],\ \lambda\in\CC, $$

is studied subject to boundary conditions

where $q\in L^1(0,1)$ and $P_j$ and $Q_j$ are polynomials with real coefficients. A comparison is made between this problem and the corresponding ‘reduced’ one where all common factors are removed from the boundary conditions. Topics treated include Jordan chain structure, eigenvalue asymptotics and eigenfunction oscillation.

It is known that, for generic $q$, the $\mathcal{H}$-invariant prime ideals in $O_{q}(\mathcal{M}_{m,p}(\mathbb{C}))$ are generated by quantum minors (see S. Launois, Les idéaux premiers invariants de $O_{q}(\mathcal{M}_{m,p}(\mathbb{C}))$, J. Alg., in press). In this paper, $m$ and $p$ being given, we construct an algorithm which computes a generating set of quantum minors for each $\mathcal{H}$-invariant prime ideal in $O_{q}(\mathcal{M}_{m,p}(\mathbb{C}))$. We also describe, in the general case, an explicit generating set of quantum minors for some particular $\mathcal{H}$-invariant prime ideals in $O_{q}(\mathcal{M}_{m,p}(\mathbb{C}))$. In particular, if $(Y_{i,\alpha})_{(i,\alpha)\in[[1,m]]\times[[1,p]]}$ denotes the matrix of the canonical generators of $O_{q}(\mathcal{M}_{m,p}(\mathbb{C}))$, we prove that, if $u\geq3$, the ideal in $O_{q}(\mathcal{M}_{m,p}(\mathbb{C}))$ generated by $Y_{1,p}$ and the $u\times u$ quantum minors is prime. This result allows Lenagan and Rigal to show that the quantum determinantal factor rings of $O_{q}(\mathcal{M}_{m,p}(\mathbb{C}))$ are maximal orders (see T. H. Lenagan and L. Rigal, Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc.46 (2003), 513–529).

This paper is a sequel to a previous paper (1) on axisymmetric potential problems for one or more circular disks situated inside a coaxial cylinder and applies the method used for these problems to the electrostatic potential problem for a perfectly conducting thin spherical cap situated inside an earthed coaxial infinitely long circular cylinder.

In the solution of boundary value problems in mathematical physics by means of integral transforms, we often find that the solution of a particular problem can be expressed in terms of integrals of the type

A largely untouched problem in the theory of inverse semigroups has been that of finding to what extent an inverse semigroup is determined by its lattice of inverse subsemigroups. In this paper we discover various properties preserved by lattice isomorphisms, and use these results to show that a free inverse semigroup ℱℐx is determined by its lattice of inverse subsemigroups, in the strong sense that every lattice isomorphism of ℱℐx upon an inverse semigroup T is induced by a unique isomorphism of ℱℐx upon T. (A similar result for free groups was proved by Sadovski (12) in 1941. An account of this may be found in Suzuki's monograph on the subject of subgroup lattices (14)).

It is known that all k-homogeneous orthogonally additive polynomials P over C(K) are of the form

Thus, x ↦ xk factors all orthogonally additive polynomials through some linear form μ. We show that no such linearization is possible without homogeneity. However, we also show that every orthogonally additive holomorphic function of bounded type f over C(K) is of the form

In this article we consider sums S(t) = Σnψ (tf(n/t)), where ψ denotes, essentially, the fractional part minus ½ f is a C4-function with f″ non-vanishing, and summation is extended over an interval of order t. For the mean-square of S(t), an asymptotic formula is established. If f is algebraic this can be sharpened by the indication of an error term.

One of the outstanding theorems in the theory of continued fractions is the result described by O. Perron, Die Lehre von den Kettenbrüchen (1912, 1929, 1954–7) as the transformation of Bauer and Muir (for brevity I shall call it the BM theorem); this theorem and limiting cases of it give rise to numerous extremely interesting consequences.

Let $u$ be a solution of a generalized Cauchy–Riemann system in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Suppose that $|u|\le1$ in the unit ball and $|u|\le\varepsilon$ on some closed set $E$. Classical results say that if $E$ is a set of positive Lebesgue measure, then $|u|\le C\varepsilon^\alpha$ on any compact subset of the unit ball. In the present work the same estimate is proved provided that $E$ is a subset of a hyperplane and the (capacitary) dimension of $E$ is greater than $n-2$. The proof gives control of constants $C$ and $\alpha$.

We show that for a given base $b$ and a proper subset $E\subset\{0,\dots,b-1\}$, $\#E\ltb-1$, the set of numbers $x\in[0,1]$ that have no digits from $E$ in their expansion to base $b$ consists almost exclusively of $S^*$-numbers of type at most $\min\{2,\log b/\log(b-\#E)\}$. We also give upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of some exceptional sets.

Let F be an algebraically closed field, G be a finite group and H be a subgroup of G. We answer several questions about the centralizer algebra FGH. Among these, we provide examples to show that

• • the centre Z(FGH) can be larger than the F-algebra generated by Z(FG) and Z(FH),

• • FGH can have primitive central idempotents that are not of the form ef, where e and f are primitive central idempotents of FG and FH respectively,

• • it is not always true that the simple FGH-modules are the same as the non-zero FGH-modules HomFH(S, T ↓ H), where S and T are simple FH and FG-modules, respectively.

A (2, 3, 7)-group is a group generated by two elements, one an involution and the other of order 3, whose product has order 7. Known finite simple examples of such groups are PSL(2, 7), PSL(2, p) where p is prime and p ≡ ±1 (mod 7), PSL(2, p3) where p is prime and p≢0, ±1 (mod 7), groups of Ree type of order q3(q3 + 1)(q − 1) where q = 32n+1 and n > 0, the sporadic group of order 23 · 3 · 5 · 7 · 11 · 19 discovered by Janko, and the Hall–Janko–Wales group of order 27 · 33 · 52 · 7 [4, 2]. G. Higman in an unpublished paper has shown that every sufficiently large alternating group is a (2, 3, 7)-group. Here we show that the sporadic group Co3 discovered by Conway [1] is a (2, 3, 7)-group.
