We continue the investigation of the algebraic and topological structure of the algebra of Colombeau generalized functions with the aim of building up the algebraic basis for the theory of these functions. This was started in a previous work of Aragona and Juriaans, where the algebraic and topological structure of the Colombeau generalized numbers were studied. Here, among other important things, we determine completely the minimal primes of and introduce several invariants of the ideals of (Ω). The main tools we use are the algebraic results obtained by Aragona and Juriaans and the theory of differential calculus on generalized manifolds developed by Aragona and co-workers. The main achievement of the differential calculus is that all classical objects, such as distributions, become C∞-functions. Our purpose is to build an independent and intrinsic theory for Colombeau generalized functions and place them in a wider context.

We present an alternative proof of the existence of density-conserving solutions to the discrete coagulation–fragmentation equations when the coagulation rates grow at most linearly. The proof relies on the study of the propagation of some moments of the solutions to approximating equations and simplifies the previous argument of Ball and Carr which involves rather delicate estimates. The case of multiple fragmentation is also considered, and the question of uniqueness as well.

We consider the class of graph-directed constructions which are connected and have the property of finite ramification.By assuming the existence of a fixed point for a certain renormalization map, it is possible to construct a Laplaceoperator on fractals in this class via their Dirichlet forms. Our main aim is to consider the eigenvalues of theLaplace operator and provide a formula for the spectral dimension, the exponent determining the power-law scaling inthe eigenvalue counting function, and establish generic constancy for the counting-function asymptotics. In order to dothis we prove an extension of the multidimensional renewal theorem. As a result we show that it is possible for theeigenvalue counting function for fractals to require a logarithmic correction to the usual power-law growth.

We study a class of Hermitian metrics on complex manifolds, recently introduced by Fu, Wang and Wu, which are a generalization of Gauduchon metrics. This class includes the class of Hermitian metrics for which the associated fundamental 2-form is ∂∂-closed. Examples are given on nilmanifolds, on products of Sasakian manifolds, on S1-bundles and via the twist construction introduced by Swann.

The theorem is well known. So also is the theorem that if concerning a determinant Λ and its reciprocal expressed by means of cofactors Aij of aij. Not quite so well known is the Cayley Hamilton theorem that a matrix X =[xij] satisfies its own characteristic equation

Unlike as these three results are, they nevertheless can be looked upon as particular phases of a general theorem concerning a matrix differential operator acting upon a function of a matrix X or its transposed.

The study of near-rings is motivated by consideration of the system generated by the endomorphisms of a (not necessarily commutative) group. Such endomorphism near-rings also furnish the motivation for the concept of a distributively generated (d.g.) near-ring. Although d.g. near-rings have been extensively studied, little is known about the structure of endomorphism near-rings. In this paper results are presented which enable one to give the elements of the endomorphism near-ring of a given group. Also, some results relating to the right ideal structure of an endomorphism near-ring are presented. These concepts are applied to present a detailed picture of the properties of the endomorphism near-ring of (S3, +).

Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, complete for an ultrametric absolute value. We show that the $p$-adic main Nevanlinna Theorem holds for meromorphic functions inside an ‘open’ disc in $K$. Let $P_{n,c}$ be the Frank–Reinders’s polynomial

and let $S_{n,c}$ be the set of its $n$ distinct zeros. For every $n\geq 7$, we show that $S_{n,c}$ is an $n$-points unique range set (counting multiplicities) for unbounded analytic functions inside an ‘open disc’, and for every $n\geq10$, we show that $S_{n,c}$ is an $n$-points unique range set ignoring multiplicities for the same set of functions. Similar results are obtained for meromorphic functions whose characteristic function is unbounded: we obtain unique range sets ignoring multiplicities of $17$ points. A better result is obtained for an analytic or a meromorphic function $f$ when its derivative is ‘small’ comparatively to $f$. In particular, for every $n\geq5$ we show that $S_{n,c}$ is an $n$-points unique range set ignoring multiplicities for unbounded analytic functions with small derivative. Actually, in each case, results also apply to pairs of analytic functions when just one of them is supposed unbounded. The method we use is based upon the $p$-adic Nevanlinna Theory, and Frank–Reinders’s and Fujimoto’s methods used for meromorphic functions in $\mathbb{C}$. Among other results, we show that the set of functions having a bounded characteristic function is just the field of fractions of the ring of bounded analytic functions in the disc.

The characterization by weighted Lipschitz continuity is given for the Bloch space on the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Similar results are obtained for little Bloch and Besov spaces.

We study the rate of growth of entire functions that are frequently hypercyclic for the differentiation operator or the translation operator. Moreover, we prove the existence of frequently hypercyclic harmonic functions for the translation operator and we study the rate of growth of harmonic functions that are frequently hypercyclic for partial differentiation operators.

In this paper, we establish the existence of infinitely many solutions to a Neumann problem involving the p-Laplacian and with discontinuous nonlinearities. The technical approach is mainly based on a very recent result on critical points for possibly non-smooth functionals in a Banach space due to Marano and Motreanu, namely Theorem 1.1 in a paper that is to appear in the journal J. Diff. Eqns (see Theorem 2.3 in the body of this paper). Some applications are presented.

A compact contact Ricci soliton (whose potential vector field is the Reeb vector field) is Sasaki–Einstein. A compact contact homogeneous manifold with a Ricci soliton is Sasaki–Einstein.

A sharp norm estimate will be given to the pre-Schwarzian derivatives of close-to-convex functions of specified type. In order to show the sharpness, we introduce a kind of maximal operator which may be of independent interest. We also discuss a relation between the subclasses of close-to-convex functions and the Hardy spaces.

The relative rank $\rank(S:A)$ of a subset $A$ of a semigroup $S$ is the minimum cardinality of a set $B$ such that $\langle A\cup B\rangle=S$. It follows from a result of Sierpiński that, if $X$ is infinite, the relative rank of a subset of the full transformation semigroup $\mathcal{T}_{X}$ is either uncountable or at most $2$. A similar result holds for the semigroup $\mathcal{B}_{X}$ of binary relations on $X$.

A subset $S$ of $\mathcal{T}_{\mathbb{N}}$ is dominated (by $U$) if there exists a countable subset $U$ of $\mathcal{T}_{\mathbb{N}}$ with the property that for each $\sigma$ in $S$ there exists $\mu$ in $U$ such that $i\sigma\le i\mu$ for all $i$ in $\mathbb{N}$. It is shown that every dominated subset of $\mathcal{T}_{\mathbb{N}}$ is of uncountable relative rank. As a consequence, the monoid of all contractions in $\mathcal{T}_{\mathbb{N}}$ (mappings $\alpha$ with the property that $|i\alpha-j\alpha|\le|i-j|$ for all $i$ and $j$) is of uncountable relative rank.

It is shown (among other results) that $\rank(\mathcal{B}_{X}:\mathcal{T}_{X})=1$ and that $\rank(\mathcal{B}_{X}:\mathcal{I}_{X})=1$ (where $\mathcal{I}_{X}$ is the symmetric inverse semigroup on $X$). By contrast, if $\mathcal{S}_{X}$ is the symmetric group, $\rank(\mathcal{B}_{X}:\mathcal{S}_{X})=2$.

Given any subspace N of a Banach space X, there is a subspace M containing N and of the same density character as N, for which there exists a linear Hahn–Banach extension operator from M* to X*. This result was first proved by Heinrich and Mankiewicz [4, Proposition 3.4] using some of the deeper results of Model Theory. More precisely, they used the Banach space version of the Löwenheim–Skolem theorem due to Stern [11], which in turn relies on the Löwenheim–Skolem and Keisler–Shelah theorems from Model Theory. Previously Lindenstrauss [7], using a finite dimensional lemma and a compactness argument, obtained a version of this for reflexive spaces. We shall show that the same finite dimensional lemma leads directly to the general result, without any appeal to Model Theory.

A probabilistic representation formula for general systems of linear parabolic equations, coupled only through the zero-order term, is given. On this basis, an implicit probabilistic representation for the vorticity in a three-dimensional viscous fluid (described by the Navier–Stokes equations) is carefully analysed, and a theorem of local existence and uniqueness is proved. The aim of the probabilistic representation is to provide an extension of the Lagrangian formalism from the non-viscous (Euler equations) to the viscous case. As an application, a continuation principle, similar to the Beale–Kato–Majda blow-up criterion, is proved.

A self-adjoint first-order system with Hermitian π-periodic potential Q(z), integrable on compact sets, is considered. It is shown that all zeros of are double zeros if and only if this self-adjoint system is unitarily equivalent to one in which Q(z) is π/2-periodic. Furthermore, the zeros of are all double zeros if and only if the associated self-adjoint system is unitarily equivalent to one in which Q(z) = σ2Q(z)σ2. Here, Δ denotes the discriminant of the system and σ0, σ2 are Pauli matrices. Finally, it is shown that all instability intervals vanish if and only if Q = rσ0 + qσ2, for some real-valued π-periodic functions r and q integrable on compact sets.

Let Mn be an n-dimensional smooth compact Riemannian manifold. By a theorem of Nash, we can think of it as an isometrically immersed submanifold in some higher dimensional Euclidean space ℝn+m. Viewing in this way we can compare the intrinsic geometry of M to its extrinsic geometry. Classically, the Gauss equation

where K(X,Y) denotes the sectional curvature in M corresponding to the plane spanned by the two orthonormal vectors X, Y and B denotes the second fundamental form gives one of the most important relations between the intrinsic and extrinsic geometries of M. In this note we shall prove the following.

The polynomials which satisfy linear differential equations of the second order and of the hypergeometric type have been the object of extensive work, and very few properties of them remain now hidden; the student who seeks in that direction a subject for research is compelled to look, not after these functions themselves but after generalisations of them. Among these may be set in first place the polynomials connected with a differential equation of the third order and of the extended hypergeometric type, of which a general theory has been given by Goursat. The number of such polynomials of which properties have been studied in particular is rather small; in fact, Appell's polynomials

and Pincherle's polynomials, arising from the expansions

are, so far as I know, the only well-known ones. To show what can be done in these ways, I shall briefly give the definition and principal properties of some polynomials analogous to Pincherle's and of some allied functions.

This paper deals with generalized elliptic integrals and generalized modular functions. Several new inequalities are given for these and related functions.

This paper is concerned with the problem of obtaining explicit expressions of solutions of a system of coupled Lyapunov matrix differential equations of the type

where Fi, Ai(t), Bi(t), Ci(t) and Dij(t) are m×m complex matrices (members of ℂm×m), for 1≦i, j≦N, and t in the interval [a,b]. When the coefficient matrices of (1.1) are timeinvariant, Dij are scalar multiples of the identity matrix of the type Dij=dijI, where dij are real positive numbers, for 1≦i, j≦N Ci, is the transposed matrix of Bi and Fi = 0, for 1≦i≦N, the Cauchy problem (1.1) arises in control theory of continuous-time jump linear quadratic systems [9–11]. Algorithms for solving the above particular case can be found in [12]]. These methods yield approximations to the solution. Without knowing the explicit expression of the solutions and in order to avoid the error accumulation it is interesting to know an explicit expression for the exact solution. In Section 2, we obtain an explicit expression of the solution of the Cauchy problem (1.1) and of two-point boundary value problems related to the system arising in (1.1). Stability conditions for the solutions of the system of (1.1) are given. Because of developed techniques this paper can be regarded as a continuation of the sequence [3, 4, 5, 6].
