Let $\sOm$ be the closure of a bounded open set in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and, for a sufficiently large integer $\kappa$, let $f\in C^\kappa(\sOm)$ be a real-valued ‘bump’ function, i.e. $\supp(f)\subset\textint(\sOm)$. First, for each $h>0$, we construct a surface spline function $\sigma_h$ whose centres are the vertices of the grid $\mathcal{V}_h=\sOm\cap h\zd$, such that $\sigma_h$ approximates $f$ uniformly over $\sOm$ with the maximal asymptotic accuracy rate for $h\rightarrow0$. Second, if $\ell_1,\ell_2,\dots,\ell_n$ are the Lagrange functions for surface spline interpolation on the grid $\mathcal{V}_h$, we prove that $\max_{x\in\sOm}\sum_{j=1}^n\ell_j^2(x)$ is bounded above independently of the mesh-size $h$. An interesting consequence of these two results for the case of interpolation on $\mathcal{V}_h$ to the values of a bump data function $f$ is obtained by means of the Lebesgue inequality.

We define a new height function $\mathcal{R}(\alpha)$, the Remak height of an algebraic number $\alpha$. We give sharp upper and lower bounds for $\mathcal{R}(\alpha)$ in terms of the classical Mahler measure $M(\alpha)$. Study of when one of these bounds is exact leads us to consideration of conjugate sets of algebraic numbers of norm $\pm 1$ lying on two circles centred at 0. We give a complete characterization of such conjugate sets. They turn out to be of two types: one related to certain cubic algebraic numbers, and the other related to a non-integer generalization of Salem numbers which we call extended Salem numbers.

A key step in establishing the validity of the linear sampling method of determining an unknown scattering obstacle $D$ from a knowledge of its far-field pattern is to prove that solutions of the Helmholtz equation in $D$ can be approximated in $H^1(D)$ by Herglotz wave functions.

To this end we establish the important property that the set of Herglotz wave functions is dense in the space of solutions of the Helmholtz equation with respect to the Sobolev space $H^1(D)$ norm.

Let $A$ be a graded, commutative Hopf algebra. We study an action of the symmetric group $\sSi_n$ on the tensor product of $n-1$ copies of $A$; this action was introduced by the second author in 1 and is relevant to the study of commutativity conditions on ring spectra in stable homotopy theory 2.

We show that for a certain class of Hopf algebras the cohomology ring $H^*(\sSi_n;A^{\otimes n-1})$ is independent of the coproduct provided $n$ and $(n-2)!$ are invertible in the ground ring. With the simplest coproduct structure, the group action becomes particularly tractable and we discuss the implications this has for computations.

Let $f$ be meromorphic of finite order in the plane, such that $f^{(k)}$ has finitely many zeros, for some $k\geq2$. The author has conjectured that $f$ then has finitely many poles. In this paper, we strengthen a previous estimate for the frequency of distinct poles of $f$. Further, we show that the conjecture is true if either

1. $f$ has order less than $1+\varepsilon$, for some positive absolute constant $\varepsilon$, or

2. $f^{(m)}$, for some $0\leq m lt k$, has few zeros away from the real axis.

We present an example of a $C^*$-subalgebra $A$ of $\mathbb{B}(H)$ and a bounded linear map from $A$ to $\mathbb{B}(K)$ which does not admit any bounded linear extension. This generalizes the result of Robertson and gives the answer to a problem raised by Pisier. Using the same idea, we compute the exactness constants of some Q-spaces. This solves a problem raised by Oikhberg. We also construct a Q-space which is not locally reflexive.

We study some weight-homogeneous systems which are not algebraically completely integrable (ACI) in the sense of Adler and van Moerebeke, but whose invariant level surface completes into a semi-abelian variety by adding a set of points (thus ACI in the sense of Mumford).

Let $R$ be a commutative ring. Let $M$ respectively $A$ denote a Noetherian respectively Artinian $R$-module, and $\mathfrak{a}$ a finitely generated ideal of $R$. The main result of this note is that the sequence of sets $(\mathrm{Att}_R\mathrm{Tor}_1^R((R/\mathfrak{a}^{n}),A))_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ is ultimately constant. As a consequence, whenever $R$ is Noetherian, we show that $\mathrm{Ass}_R\mathrm{Ext}_R^1((R/\mathfrak{a}^{n}),M)$ is ultimately constant for large $n$, which is an affirmative answer to the question that was posed by Melkersson and Schenzel in the case $i=1$.

Whereas pseudovarieties of commutative semigroups are known to be finitely based, the globals of monoidal pseudovarieties of commutative semigroups are shown to be finitely based (or of finite vertex rank) if and only if the index is 0, 1 or $\omega$. Nevertheless, on these pseudovarieties, the operation of taking the global preserves decidability. Furthermore, the gaps between many of these globals are shown to be big in the sense that they contain chains which are order isomorphic to the reals.

Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, complete for an ultrametric absolute value. We show that the $p$-adic main Nevanlinna Theorem holds for meromorphic functions inside an ‘open’ disc in $K$. Let $P_{n,c}$ be the Frank–Reinders’s polynomial

and let $S_{n,c}$ be the set of its $n$ distinct zeros. For every $n\geq 7$, we show that $S_{n,c}$ is an $n$-points unique range set (counting multiplicities) for unbounded analytic functions inside an ‘open disc’, and for every $n\geq10$, we show that $S_{n,c}$ is an $n$-points unique range set ignoring multiplicities for the same set of functions. Similar results are obtained for meromorphic functions whose characteristic function is unbounded: we obtain unique range sets ignoring multiplicities of $17$ points. A better result is obtained for an analytic or a meromorphic function $f$ when its derivative is ‘small’ comparatively to $f$. In particular, for every $n\geq5$ we show that $S_{n,c}$ is an $n$-points unique range set ignoring multiplicities for unbounded analytic functions with small derivative. Actually, in each case, results also apply to pairs of analytic functions when just one of them is supposed unbounded. The method we use is based upon the $p$-adic Nevanlinna Theory, and Frank–Reinders’s and Fujimoto’s methods used for meromorphic functions in $\mathbb{C}$. Among other results, we show that the set of functions having a bounded characteristic function is just the field of fractions of the ring of bounded analytic functions in the disc.

Let $X$ be a Banach space and $\xi$ an ordinal number. We study some isomorphic classifications of the Banach spaces $X^\xi$ of the continuous $X$-valued functions defined in the interval of ordinals $[1,\xi]$ and equipped with the supremum norm. More precisely, first we use the continuum hypothesis to give an isomorphic classification of $C(I)^\xi$, $\xi\geq\omega_1$. Then we present a characterization of the separable Banach spaces $X$ that are isomorphic to $X^\xi$, $\forall\xi$, $\omega\leq\xi lt \omega_1$. Finally, we show that the isomorphic classifications of $(C(I)\oplus F^*)^\xi$ and $\ell_\infty(\N)^\xi$, where $F$ is the space of Figiel and $\omega\leq\xi lt \omega_1$ are similar to that of $\R^\xi$ given by Bessaga and Pelczynski.

The question of whether ribbon-disc complements—or, equivalently, standard 2-complexes over labelled oriented trees—are aspherical is of great importance for Whitehead’s asphericity conjecture and, if solved affirmatively, would imply a combinatorial proof of the asphericity of knot complements. We present here two classes of diagrammatically reducible labelled oriented trees.

The aim of this paper is to prove the existence and uniqueness of mild and classical solutions of the non-local Cauchy problem for a semilinear integrodifferential equation with deviating argument. The results are established by using the method of semigroups and the contraction mapping principle. The paper generalizes certain results of Lin and Liu.

For a two-step nilpotent locally compact group $G$, we determine the Glimm ideal space of the group $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G)$ and its topology. This leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for $C^*(G)$ to be quasi-standard. Moreover, some results about the Glimm classes of points in the primitive ideal space $\mathrm{Prim}(C^*(G))$ are obtained.

We assume throughout that $p lt r lt p^{*}=pN/ (N-p)$, $1 lt p lt N$, the functions $a$, $b$ and $h$ are positive while $f$, $g$ are subcritical nonlinearities. We show that there exist an open interval $I$ and $\lambda^\star gt 0$ such that the problem has no solution if $\theta\in I$ and $\lambda\in (0,\lambda^\star)$. Furthermore, there exist an open interval $J\subset I$ and $\lambda_0 gt 0$ such that, for any $\theta\in J$, the above problem has at least a solution if $\lambda\geq \lambda_0$, but it has no solution provided that $\lambda\in (0,\lambda_0)$.

We consider the equation of a one-dimensional viscous heat-conducting compressible gas in the variable domain with the appropriate boundary conditions. We study the large-time behaviour of the solution in the particular case where the displacement of the variable boundary is given by $L(t)=L_0(1+at)^\alpha$ with $0lt\alphalt1$, where $a$ is a positive constant and $L_0$ is the initial amplitude of our domain.

A harmonic morphism defined on $\mathbb{R}^3$ with values in a Riemann surface is characterized in terms of a complex analytic curve in the complex surface of straight lines. We show how, to a certain family of complex curves, the singular set of the corresponding harmonic morphism has an isolated component consisting of a continuously embedded knot.

Adapting the theory of the derived category to ordered groupoids, we prove that every ordered functor (and thus every inverse and regular semigroup homomorphism) factors as an enlargement followed by an ordered fibration. As an application, we obtain Lawson’s version of Ehresmann’s Maximum Enlargement Theorem, from which can be deduced the classical theory of idempotent-pure inverse semigroup homomorphisms and $E$-unitary inverse semigroups.

We show that the involution $\theta(a\otimes b)=a^*\otimes b^*$ on the Haagerup tensor product $A\otimes_{\mrm{H}}B$ of $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$ is an isometry if and only if $A$ and $B$ are commutative. The involutive Banach algebra $A\otimes_{\mrm{H}}A$ arising from the involution $a\otimes b\to b^*\otimes a^*$ is also studied.
