The purpose of this work is to establish a priori $C^{2,\alpha}$ estimates for mesh function solutions of nonlinear difference equations of positive type in fully nonlinear form on a uniform mesh, where the fully nonlinear finite difference operator $\F$ is concave in the second-order variables. The estimate is an analogue of the corresponding estimate for solutions of concave fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. We use the results for the special case that the operator does not depend explicitly upon the independent variables (the so-called frozen case) established in part I to approach the general case of explicit dependence upon the independent variables. We make our approach for the diagonal case via a discretization of the approach of Safonov for fully nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations using the discrete linear theory of Kuo and Trudinger and an especially agreeable mesh function interpolant provided by Kunkle. We generalize to non-diagonal operators using an idea which, to the author’s knowledge, is novel. In this paper we establish the desired Hölder estimate in the large, that is, on the entire mesh $n$-plane. In a subsequent paper a truly interior estimate will be established in a mesh $n$-box.

We characterize the duals and biduals of the $L^p$-analogues $\mathcal{N}_\alpha^p$ of the standard Nevanlinna classes $\mathcal{N}_\alpha$, $\alpha\ge-1$ and $1\le p\lt \infty$. We adopt the convention to take $\mathcal{N}_{-1}^p$ to be the classical Smirnov class $\mathcal{N}^+$ for $p=1$, and the Hardy–Orlicz space $LH^p$ $(=(\text{Log}^+H)^p)$ for $1\lt p\lt\infty$. Our results generalize and unify earlier characterizations obtained by Eoff for $\alpha=0$ and $\alpha=-1$, and by Yanigahara for the Smirnov class.

Each $\mathcal{N}_\alpha^p$ is a complete metrizable topological vector space (in fact, even an algebra); it fails to be locally bounded and locally convex but admits a separating dual. Its bidual will be identified with a specific nuclear power series space of finite type; this turns out to be the ‘Fréchet envelope’ of $\mathcal{N}_\alpha^p$ as well.

The generating sequence of this power series space is of the form $(n^\theta)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ for some $0\lt\theta\lt1$. For example, the $\theta$s in the interval $(\smfr12,1)$ correspond in a bijective fashion to the Nevanlinna classes $\mathcal{N}_\alpha$, $\alpha\gt-1$, whereas the $\theta$s in the interval $(0,\smfr12)$ correspond bijectively to the Hardy–Orlicz spaces $LH^p$, $1\lt p\lt \infty$. By the work of Yanagihara, $\theta=\smfr12$ corresponds to $\mathcal{N}^+$.

As in the work by Yanagihara, we derive our results from characterizations of coefficient multipliers from $\mathcal{N}_\alpha^p$ into various smaller classical spaces of analytic functions on $\Delta$.

It is known that ℚ-derived univariate polynomials (polynomials defined over ℚ, with the property that they and all their derivatives have all their roots in ℚ) can be completely classified subject to two conjectures: that no quartic with four distinct roots is ℚ-derived, and that no quintic with a triple root and two other distinct roots is ℚ-derived. We prove the second of these conjectures.

Let $p$ be an odd prime. The primary purpose of this paper is to determine the excess of the conjugates of the Steenrod operations $\mrm{P}[k;f]$, which are defined as $\mrm{P}[k;f]:=\mrm{P}(p^{k-1}f)\cdot\mrm{P}(p^{k-2}f)\cdot\cdots\cdot\mrm{P}(pf)\cdot\mrm{P}(f)$. The result is then used to obtain sufficient conditions for an element in the polynomial algebra $\mathbb{F}_p[x_1,\dots,x_s]$ to be in the image under the standard action of the Steenrod algebra. Results and methods are generalizations of previous work by Judith Silverman and by myself with Judith Silverman.

The non-local equation

$$ u_t=(u^3u_x)_x+\frac{\lambda f(u)}{(\int_{-1}^1f(u)\,\rd x)^{2}} $$

is considered, subject to some initial and Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here $f$ is taken to be either $\exp(-s^4)$ or $H(1-s)$ with $H$ the Heaviside function, which are both decreasing. It is found that there exists a critical value $\lambda^*=2$, so that for $\lambda>\lambda^{*}$ there is no stationary solution and $u$ ‘blows up’ (in some sense). If $0\lt\lambda\lt\lambda^{*}$, there is a unique stationary solution which is asymptotically stable and the solution of the IBVP is global in time.

In this paper we study the algebraic structure of the hyperelliptic mapping class group of Klein surfaces, which is closely related to the mapping class group of punctured discs. This group plays an important role in the study of the moduli space of hyperelliptic real algebraic curves. Our main result provides a presentation by generators and relations for the hyperelliptic mapping class group of surfaces of prescribed topological type.

Let $H$ be a Hall $\pi$-subgroup of a finite $\pi$-separable group $G$, and let $\alpha$ be an irreducible Brauer character of $H$. If $\alpha(x)=\alpha(y)$ whenever $x,y \in H$ are $p$-regular and $G$-conjugate, then $\alpha$ extends to a Brauer character of $G$.

Given finite sets of cyclic words $\{u_1,\dots,u_k\}$ and $\{v_1,\dots,v_k\}$ in a finitely generated free group $F$ and two finite groups $A$ and $B$ of outer automorphisms of $F$, we produce an algorithm to decide whether there is an automorphism which conjugates $A$ to $B$ and takes $u_i$ to $v_i$ for each $i$. If $A$ and $B$ are trivial, this is the classic algorithm due to Whitehead. We use this algorithm together with Cohen and Lustig’s solution to the conjugacy problem for Dehn twist automorphisms of $F$ to solve the conjugacy problem for outer automorphisms which have a power which is a Dehn twist. This settles the conjugacy problem for all automorphisms of $F$ which have linear growth.

Let $\rho:G\hookrightarrow\GL(n,\F)$ be a representation of a finite group $G$ over a finite field $\F$ and $f_1,\dots,f_n\in\F[V]^G$ such that the ring of invariants is a polynomial algebra $\F[f_1,\dots,f_n]$. It is known that in this case the algebra of coinvariants $\F[V]_G$ is a Poincaré duality algebra, and if, moreover, the order of $G$ is invertible in $\F$, that a fundamental class is represented by the Jacobian determinant $\mathchoice{\det\biggl[\frac{\partial f_i}{\partial z_j}\biggr]}{\det[\partial f_i/\partial z_j]}{\det[\partial f_i/\partial z_j]} {\det[\partial f_i/\partial z_j]}$, and is therefore a $\det^{-1}$-relative invariant. In this note we deduce what happens in the modular case. As a bonus we obtain a new criterion for an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra to be a ring of invariants.

This paper generalizes, in two senses, work of Petzl and Sharp, who showed that, for a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded module $M$ over a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded commutative Noetherian ring $R$, the graded Cousin complex for $M$ introduced by Goto and Watanabe can be regarded as a subcomplex of the ordinary Cousin complex studied by Sharp, and that the resulting quotient complex is always exact. The generalizations considered in this paper are, firstly, to multigraded situations and, secondly, to Cousin complexes with respect to more general filtrations than the basic ones considered by Petzl and Sharp. New arguments are presented to provide a sufficient condition for the exactness of the quotient complex in this generality, as the arguments of Petzl and Sharp will not work for this situation without additional input.

It is shown that most properties of (bounded) completely hyperexpansive operators remain valid for unbounded $2$-hyperexpansive operators. Powers of closed $2$-hyperexpansive operators are proved to be closed and $2$-hyperexpansive. Various parts of spectra of such operators are calculated. $2$-hyperexpansive weighted shifts are investigated. Examples of unbounded closed $2$-hyperexpansive ($2$-isometric) operators with invariant dense domains are established.

Let $N$ be a zero-symmetric near-ring with identity, and let $\sGa$ be a faithful tame $N$-group. We characterize those ideals of $\sGa$ that are the range of some idempotent element of $N$. Using these idempotents, we show that the polynomials on the direct product of the finite $\sOm$-groups $V_1,V_2,\dots,V_n$ can be studied componentwise if and only if $\prod_{i=1}^nV_i$ has no skew congruences.

A non-commutative multivariable analogue of Parrott’s generalization of the Sz.-Nagy–Foia\c{s} commutant lifting theorem is obtained. This yields Tomita-type commutant results and interpolation theorems (e.g. Sarason, Nevanlinna–Pick, Carathéodory) for $F_n^\infty\,\bar{\otimes}\,\M$, the weakly-closed algebra generated by the spatial tensor product of the non-commutative analytic Toeplitz algebra $F_n^\infty$ and an arbitrary von Neumann algebra $\M$. In particular, we obtain interpolation theorems for bounded analytic functions from the open unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$ into a von Neumann algebra.

A variant of the non-commutative Poisson transform is used to extend the von Neumann inequality to tensor algebras, and to provide a generalization of the functional calculus for contractive sequences of operators on Hilbert spaces. Commutative versions of these results are also considered.

If $T:A_{0}\rightarrow B$ boundedly and $T:A_{1}\rightarrow B$ compactly, then a result of Lions–Peetre shows that $T:A\rightarrow B$ compactly for a certain class of spaces $A$ which are intermediate with respect to $A_{0}$ and $A_{1}$. We investigate to what extent such results can hold for arbitrary intermediate spaces $A$. The ‘dual’ case of an operator $S$ such that $S:X\rightarrow Y_{0}$ boundedly and $S:X\rightarrow Y_{1}$ compactly, is also considered, as well as similar questions for other closed operator ideals.

We consider the following nonlinear elliptic equations

where $u_{+}=\max(u,0)$, $M$ is a prescribed constant, and $\sOm$ is a bounded and smooth domain in $R^N$, $N\geq3$. It is known that for $M=M_{*}^{(N)}$, $\sOm=B_R(0)$, the above problem has a continuum of solutions. The case when $M>M_{*}^{(N)}$ is referred to as supercritical in the literature. We show that for $M$ near $KM_{*}^{(N)}$, $K>1$, there exist solutions with multiple condensations in $\sOm$. These concentration points are non-degenerate critical points of a function related to the Green's function.

McAlister proved that every regular locally inverse semigroup can be covered by a regular Rees matrix semigroup over an inverse semigroup by means of a homomorphism which is locally an isomorphism. We generalize this result to the class of semigroups with local units whose local submonoids have commuting idempotents and possessing what we term a ‘McAlister sandwich function’.

A natural topology on the set of germs of holomorphic functions on a compact subset $K$ of a Fréchet space is the locally convex inductive limit topology of the spaces $\mathcal{O}(\sOm)$ endowed with the compact open topology; here $\sOm$ is any open subset containing $K$. Mujica gave a description of this space as the inductive limit of a suitable sequence of compact subsets. He used a set of intricate semi-norms for this. We give a projective characterization of this space, using simpler semi-norms, whose form is similar to the one used in the Whitney Extension Theorem for $C_\infty$ functions. They are quite natural in a framework where extensions are involved. We also give a simple proof that this topology is strictly stronger than the topology of the projective limit of the non-quasi-analytic spaces.
