The Herschel/HIFI absorption spectroscopy surveys reveal the unexpected molecular richness of the Galactic diffuse ISM, even in gas of very low average H2 molecular fraction. In particular, two hydrides, CH+ and SH+ with highly endoenergetic formation routes have abundances that challenge models of UV-driven chemistry. The intermittent dissipation of turbulence appears as a plausible additional source of energy for the diffuse ISM chemistry. We present recent results of the so-called models of Turbulent Dissipation Regions (TDR). The abundances of many of the molecules observed in the diffuse ISM, including CO that is used as a tracer of the molecular clouds mass, may be understood in the framework of the TDR models.

Until recently the dynamical evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) was simulated using collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE) conditions. However, the ISM is a dynamical system, in which the plasma is naturally driven out of equilibrium due to atomic and dynamic processes operating on different timescales. A step forward in the field comprises a multi-fluid approach taking into account the joint thermal and dynamical evolutions of the ISM gas.

Star formation is self-regulated by its feedback that drives turbulence and heats the gas. In equilibrium, the star formation rate (SFR) should be directly related to the total (thermal plus turbulent) midplane pressure and hence the total weight of the diffuse gas if energy balance and vertical dynamical equilibrium hold simultaneously. To investigate this quantitatively, we utilize numerical hydrodynamic simulations focused on outer-disk regions where diffuse atomic gas dominates. By analyzing gas properties at saturation, we obtain relationships between the turbulence driving and dissipation rates, heating and cooling rates, the total midplane pressure and the total weight of gas, and the SFR and the total midplane pressure. We find a nearly linear relationship between the SFR and the midplane pressure consistent with the theoretical prediction.

In a thermally bistable medium, cold, dense gas is separated from warm, rarified gas by thin phase transition layers, or fronts, in which radiative heating/cooling, thermal conduction, and convection of material are balanced. While these fronts have received only scant attention in the literature, and are not resolved by most current numerical simulations, they have been shown to have important ramifications for transport processes and structure formation in the diffuse interstellar medium. Here, we discuss calculations of their hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic stability properties.

Planck is a cosmology experiment, but significant interstellar dust and gas emission exists in the band where the CMB peaks. Therefore, Planck's all-sky surveys provide new views of the ISM and magnetic fields in the Galaxy, as well as the dust and gas in galaxies.

We study the gravitational fragmentation of a thick shell comparing the analytical theory to 3D hydrodynamic simulations and to observations of the Carina Flare supershell. We use both grid-based (AMR) and particle-based (SPH) codes to follow the idealised model of the fragmenting shell and found an excellent agreement between the two codes. Growth rates of fragments at different wavelength are well described by the pressure assisted gravitational instability (PAGI) - a new theory of the thick shell fragmentation. Using the APEX telescope we observe a part of the surface of the Carina Flare supershell (GSH287+04-17) in the 13CO(2–1) line. We apply a new clump-finding algorithm DENDROFIND to identify 50 clumps. We determine the clump mass function and we construct the minimum spanning tree connecting clumps positions to estimate the typical distance among clumps. We conclude that the observed masses and distances correspond well to the prediction of PAGI.

Marchwinski et al. (2012) mapped the magnetic field strength across the quiescent cloud GRSMC 45.60+0.30 (shown in Figure 1 subtending 40x10 pc at a distance of 1.88 kpc) with the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method CF; Chandrasekhar & Fermi 1953) using near-infrared starlight polarimetry from the Galactic Plane Infrared Polarization Survey (Clemens et al.2012a, b) and gas properties from the Galactic Ring Survey (Jackson et al.2006). The large-scale magnetic field is oriented parallel to the gas-traced ‘spine’ of the cloud. Seven ‘magnetic cores’ with high magnetic field strength were identified and are coincident with peaks in the gas column density. Calculation of the mass-to-flux ratio (Crutcher 1999) shows that these cores are exclusively magnetically subcritical and that magnetostatic pressure can support them against gravitational collapse.

Based on the very general assumptions on evolution, we have modeled the statistics of SNRs evolving at various initial and environmental conditions. The method is applied to M33, for which the value of the filling factor of the hot phase of the ISM is estimated to be ~ 10%.

We use the very recently completed high-resolution IRAM CO survey of M33 with the high-resolution HI observations (published by Gratier et al. 2010, A&A, 522, 3) and Herschel Far-IR and submillimeter mapping observations to study how the dust behaves in the molecular and atomic gas phases of the interstellar medium (ISM). M33 is a “young" object in that it is gas-rich with a young stellar population and low metallicity as compared to large spirals like the Milky Way or Andromeda. Nonetheless, it is very clearly a spiral galaxy with a thin and reasonably axisymmetric disk. As such, it can be viewed as a stepping stone towards less evolved objects like magellanic irregulars (including the LMC and SMC) and perhaps distant objects in the early universe. More specifically, we look for radial variations in the dust emission spectrum (β parameter) as well as comparing regions dominated by either H2 or HI. The grey-body emission spectrum flattens (lower β) with galactocentric distance and generally is flatter in the atomic medium as compared to the molecular gas.

We present Herschel-SPIRE imaging spectroscopy (194-671 μm) of the bright starburst galaxy M82. We use RADEX and a Bayesian Likelihood Analysis to simultaneously model the temperature, density, column density, and filling factor of both the cool and warm components of molecular gas traced by the entire CO ladder up to J=13-12. The high-J lines observed by SPIRE trace much warmer gas (~500 K) than those observable from the ground. The addition of 13CO (and [C I]) is new and indicates that [C I] may be tracing different gas than 12CO. At such a high temperature, cooling is dominated by molecular hydrogen; we conclude with a discussion on the possible excitation processes in this warm component. Photon-dominated region (PDR) models require significantly higher densities than those indicated by our Bayesian likelihood analysis in order to explain the high-J CO line ratios, though cosmic-ray enhanced PDR models can do a better job reproducing the emission at lower densities. Shocks and turbulent heating are likely required to explain the bright high-J emission.

In the steady state, the probability density function (PDF) of the gaseous interstellar matter (ISM) can be observed as a gas density histogram (GDH) of all cells in the system. We made GDHs of the Milky Way Galaxy (MWG) using Galactic plane surveys in CO lines. We found that the GDH in the MWG is log-normal which suggests that the density structure of the molecular gas is a result of many stochastic processes. Using the Nobeyama CO atlas, we made GDHs of nearby galaxies but in column density. Although some galaxies show log-normal, the others show completely different shapes, suggesting that the density structure of galaxies may be different from galaxy to galaxy.

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows shine, during a brief period of time as the most luminous objects that can be detected in the Universe. They have been observed at almost any redshift, from our nearby environment (the nearest one, at z = 0.08) to the very distant Universe (the current record holder at z = 9.4). Their optical spectra are well reproduced by a clean, simple power law, making them ideal light houses to probe the interstellar medium of their host galaxies at any redshift. We have used the largest sample of GRB afterglow spectra collected to date to perform a statistical study of the interstellar medium in their host galaxies. By analysing the distribution of equivalent widths of the most prominent absorption features we evaluate the different types of environments that host GRBs and study their diversity.

We report the results of a kinematic Hα survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the form of a kinematic and photometric catalogue of 210 HII regions, the radial velocity field of the ionized hydrogen in this galaxy, and the LMC Rotation Curve obtained from the velocity field. These data aim at understanding the LMC HII regions, bubbles and superbubbles in a global (galactic) scale so that we could have a 3D view and separate the rotation due to gravitational potential from other motions such as expansions.

We report new calculations of the effective recombination coefficients for the nebular N ii and O ii lines and very deep spectroscopy of the bright planetary nebula (PN) NGC 7009.

The family of unidentified infrared emission features, consisting of discrete and plateau features in the mid-infrared, are now observed in distant galaxies. A significant fraction of the total energy output of some infrared galaxies is emitted in these features. Comparisons of these features with those observed in the circumstellar and interstellar media suggest that these organic species are synthesized and ejected by evolved stars. Models of possible chemical structures of the carrier of these features are discussed.

Observations of deuterated species are essential to probing the properties and thermal history of various astrophysical environments, and the ALMA observing facilities will reveal a multitude of new deuterated molecules. To analyze these new vast data we have constructed a new up-to-date network with the largest collection of deuterium chemistry reactions to date. We assess the reliability of the network and probe the role of physical parameters and initial abundances on the chemical evolution of deuterated species. Finally, we perform a sensitivity study to assess the uncertainties in the estimated abundances and D/H ratios.

John Dyson was born on the 7th January 1941 in Meltham Mills, West Yorkshire, England, and later grew up in Harrogate and Leeds. The proudest moment of John's early life was meeting Freddie Trueman, who became one of the greatest fast bowlers of English cricket. John used a state scholarship to study at Kings College London, after hearing a radio lecture by D. M. McKay. He received a first class BSc Special Honours Degree in Physics in 1962, and began a Ph.D. at the University of Manchester Department of Astronomy after being attracted to astronomy by an article of Zdenek Kopal in the semi-popular journal New Scientist. John soon started work with Franz Kahn, and studied the possibility that the broad emission lines seen from the Orion Nebula were due to flows driven by the photoevaporation of neutral globules embedded in a HII region. John's thesis was entitled “The Age and Dynamics of the Orion Nebula“ and he passed his oral examination on 28th February 1966.

Astronomers “have a responsibility to communicate their results and efforts with the public for the benefit of all”, especially since most are publically funded. The importance of science communication has never been greater nor have the opportunities for communication of science to the public been larger. While astronomers are highly trained in carrying out scientific research, in general they are poorly equipped to communicate the excitement and results of their research to a broader audience. Generally, they do not have information about the various opportunities for communicating astronomy nor on the resources to help them and support them in communicating astronomy.

On 16 April 2011 the IAU's Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) was launched jointly by the President of the IAU and the South African Minister of Science and Technology, at the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town. This OAD was set up to realise the IAU's strategic plan which aims to use astronomy as a tool for development. Communicating astronomy with the public is one of the OAD's focus areas.
