We present results of numerical 3D simulation of propagation of MHD waves in sunspots. We used two self consistent magnetohydrostatic background models of sunspots. There are two main differences between these models: (i) the topology of the magnetic field and (ii) dependence of the horizontal profile of the sound speed on depth. The model with convex shape of the magnetic field lines near the photosphere has non-zero horizorntal perturbations of the sound speed up to the depth of 7.5 Mm (deep model). In the model with concave shape of the magnetic field lines near the photosphere Δ c/c is close to zero everywhere below 2 Mm (shallow model). Strong Alfven wave is generated at the wave source location in the deep model. This wave is almost unnoticeable in the shallow model. Using filtering technique we separated magnetoacoustic and magnetogravity waves. It is shown, that inside the sunspot magnetoacoustic and magnetogravity waves are not spatially separated unlike the case of the horizontally uniform background model. The sunspot causes anisotropy of the amplitude distribution along the wavefront and changes the shape of the wavefront. The amplitude of the waves is reduced inside the sunspot. This effect is stronger for the magnetogravity waves than for magnetoacoustic waves. The shape of the wavefront of the magnetogravity waves is distorted stronger as well. The deep model causes bigger anisotropy for both mgnetoacoustic and magneto gravity waves than the shallow model.

Differential rotational rate of the large scale magnetic field and its temporal dependence has been evidenced at different latitudes through activity cycles 21-23. Rotational rate of the magnetic field at the latitudes above 55 degrees doesn't getting slower. Torsional waves with 11-year period are clearly seen in the magnetic field rotation. Rotation is slower where and when the magnetic field is getting stronger.

The time of the magnetic field emergence to the photosphere was estimated.

It was revealed the existence of quasi-stable over 30 years exceptionally regular and symmetric in the both hemispherest longitudinal structure. This structure is originated from the tachocline zone rotating like a rigid body with the rotation rate corresponding to the rotation in the photosphere on the 55-60 degrees of the helio-latitudes.

Hot subdwarf stars (of the sdB and sdO type) host three known classes of nonradial pulsators. Two of them feature short period (P ~ 60 - 600 s) accoustic mode oscillations, while the third group is characterized by slow g-mode deformations with periods of ~ 1 - 2h. These pulsations offer favorable grounds to infer some of the internal properties of these objects through asteroseismology. This has been exploited for the rapid p-mode sdB pulsators and the present contribution reviews some of the recent advances in this field. The long period g-mode pulsators, whose vibrations probe much deeper inside the star, are also of high interest. With the advent of space observations using CoRoT and KEPLER, the asteroseismology of these slower oscillators will also become a possibility, and likely contribute to significant breakthroughs in our understanding of these hot and compact stars.

In the asteroseismology of early type stars it plays an important role the extremely precise high resolution spectroscopy. Especially the determination of pulsation modes from observations requires the identification of subtle changes in line profiles of a number of chemical elements. As commonly available instruments suitable for this purpose are echelle spectrographs, there is a number of possible imperfections and even systematic errors introduced by the echelle reduction procedures. We will mention several, most critical steps, that should be carefully checked during every reduction.

As the 7th brightest star and the most luminous star in the solar neighborhood, Rigel (β Orionis) is a very intriguing object. This blue supergiant (B8 Iab; V-mag = +0.05–0.18-mag; B–V = -0.03), at a distance (from Hipparcos) of ~240±35 pc has a 〈MV〉 = -6.7 mag. The following physical properties were determined via spectroscopic, photometric, and interferometric studies: L/L⊙ ≈ 66,000 K; Teff ≈ 12,000 K; M/M⊙ ≈ 17±3; R/R⊙ ≈ 70; τ ≈ 3–10 Myr. Interestingly Rigel has similar physical properties with the 12th mag blue supergiant progenitor of SN 1987A: Sanduleak -69° 202a. Thus Rigel (along with its co-asterism Betelgeuse) are likely to be the nearest progenitors of a Type II supernova. Such a nearby explosion would be V ≈ -11th mag (similar to a quarter moon).

Oscillation frequencies were determined for a number of rapidly rotating main sequence stars. However, real seismic probing is still ahead of us. I review here tools that we have for modeling pulsation in rotating stars and their potential application to seismic sounding.

In this paper I briefly summarize a number of robust results derived from observational and theoretical studies of roAp stars over the past three decades.

We present examples of an extended asteroseismic modelling in which we aim at fitting not only pulsational frequencies but also certain complex parameter related to each frequency. This kind of studies, called complex asteroseismology, has been successfully applied to a few main sequence B-type pulsators and provided, in particular, plausible constraints on stellar opacities. Here, we briefly describe our results for three early B-type stars.

Since 2003 the MOST (Microvariability and Oscillations of STars) microsatellite has obtained typically a month of non-stop, minute-of-time resolution, high-precision, single-broadband optical photometry for each of a significant number of Galactic OB and WR stars. Numerous p- and g-modes were clearly detected in several OB stars, including discovery of g-modes for the first time in a blue supergiant (Saio et al. 2006). True rotation periods were found for some SPBe pulsators (Cameron et al. 2008). Many O stars are remarkably quiet. Five presumably single WR stars have been observed so far, each interesting in its own way. In particular, the cool WR stars WR123 (WN8) and WR103 (WC9d) both show mostly short-lived, multimode oscillations with most of the Fourier power occurring on a day or longer timescale (Moffat et al. 2008a). WR123 also revealed a fairly stable 10-hour periodicity (Lefèvre et al. 2005). All of these oscillations probably arise in the stellar cores. WR111 (WC5) shows no (coherent) oscillations above the detection limit of 0.05 mmag in the 10-minute period range predicted for strange-mode pulsations at a level of 2 mmag (Moffat et al. 2008b). WR110 (WN5-6 and a stronger-than-average X-ray source) and WR124 (WN8h, i.e. in contrast with the previously observed, hydrogen-free WR123 of otherwise similar subtype), both strongly variable with MOST, are currently being analyzed. The next target just observed (late-June to early Aug 2009) is the 30-day eclipsing binary CV Ser = WR113 (WC8d + O8-9IV). Besides stellar oscillations, we will also search for orbital-phase dependent, stochastic variability in CV Ser as wind clumps in the WR component's dense wind pass in front of the O-star.

We studied the fast kink modes of a cylindrical model of coronal loops, in coronal conditions, stratified density and low-β plasma. The mode frequencies and profiles are calculated.

We present our new observing project searching for pulsations in M dwarfs.

A core helium flash after the departure from the red giant branch (i.e. "hot-flasher scenario") offers one of the most promising explanations for the origin of He-sdO stars. Recently, Miller Bertolami et al. (2008) have shown that many surface properties of H-deficient sdO stars (the He-sdO stars) could be explained through this scenario if chemical diffusion is taken into account. In this context the He-sdO stars formed during a hot-flasher event would transform into H-rich hot-sdB stars (33000-38000 K) as a consequence of diffusion of the remaining H towards the surface of the star. Thus, some hot sdBs might be the descendants of He-sdO stars that have previously burnt most of their H-content and, thus, a very thin H envelope should be expected (10−9 to 10−10 M⊙, see Miller Bertolami et al. 2008 for details). Interestingly enough, the location of these sdB stars in the logg - Teff diagram should overlap with the domain of the rapidly pulsating (p-mode) EC 14026 stars. This fact opens the interesting possibility of employing asteroseismology to investigate the existence of hot-sdB stars characterized by such very thin H envelopes. In this preliminary investigation, we explore the sensitivity of the acoustic pulsation spectrum of EC 14026 stars to the thickness of the H envelope.

The pulsation analysis presented in this work was performed with the help of the adiabatic radial and nonradial pulsation code employed by our group in numerous asteroseismological studies of white dwarfs and pre-white dwarfs (see Córsico et al. 2008 and references therein). The stellar models adopted in the present study where extracted from the 0.48150 M⊙ (Z= 0.001) sequence of Miller Bertolami et al. (2008). Given the exploratory nature of this work, in order to analyze the effects of different thicknesses of the H-rich envelope on the pulsation spectrum of sdB stars we have artificially added a H-rich envelope in the outermost layers of our initial model. We have considered four different thicknesses of the H envelope (log Menv/M⊙ ~ −4, −6, −8, −10) in addition to the self-consistent model (which lacks a H envelope). Next, we have pursued the evolution of the five sequences during the evolution on the HB. For each stellar model, we have computed the radial and nonradial p-modes with periods longer than 20 seconds, thus comfortably covering the observed period range of EC 14026 stars (80 - 400 sec).

Our results show that the cycle of trapping is markedly smaller for the case of thick H-envelope models (Menv > 10−7 M⊙) than for the thin H-envelope models (Menv < 10−7 M⊙). We find that sdB stars with very thin H envelopes (Menv < 10−7 M⊙) would not display almost any kind of trapping features in their frequency distribution at the observed range in EC 14026 stars (ν < 13 mHz). Consequently their frequency spectra should be significantly different from that of normal sdB stars. We plan to explore in future works to which extent the shape of the chemical transitions (here adopted as simple gaussian profiles) affects the mode-trapping features.

Hot DQ white dwarfs constitute a new class of white dwarf stars, uncovered recently within the framework of SDSS project. There exist nine of them, out of a total of several thousands white dwarfs spectroscopically identified. Recently, three hot DQ white dwarfs have been reported to exhibit photometric variability with periods compatible with pulsation g-modes. In this contribution, we presented the results of a non-adiabatic pulsation analysis of the recently discovered carbon-rich hot DQ white dwarf stars. Our study relies on the full evolutionary models of hot DQ white dwarfs recently developed by Althaus et al. (2009), that consistently cover the whole evolution from the born-again stage to the white dwarf cooling track. Specifically, we performed a stability analysis on white dwarf models from stages before the blue edge of the DBV instability strip (Teff ≈ 30000 K) until the domain of the hot DQ white dwarfs (18000-24000 K), including the transition DB→hot DQ white dwarf. We explore evolutionary models with M*= 0.585M⊙ and M* = 0.87M⊙, and two values of thickness of the He-rich envelope (MHe = 2 × 10−7M* and MHe = 10−8M*).

Eta Car, with its historical outbursts, visible ejecta and massive, variable winds, continues to challenge both observers and modelers. In just the past five years over 100 papers have been published on this fascinating object. We now know it to be a massive binary system with a 5.54-year period. In January 2009, η Car underwent one of its periodic low-states, associated with periastron passage of the two massive stars. This event was monitored by an intensive multi-wavelength campaign ranging from γ-rays to radio. A large amount of data was collected to test a number of evolving models including 3-D models of the massive interacting winds. August 2009 was an excellent time for observers and theorists to come together and review the accumulated studies, as have occurred in four meetings since 1998 devoted to Eta Car. Indeed, η Car behaved both predictably and unpredictably during this most recent periastron, spurring timely discussions.

Much progress has been made in recent years towards a better understanding of the physical and chemical processes in Photo-dissociation/Photon-dominated Regions (PDRs), both observationally and in terms of detailed physical and chemical modelling. This article highlights some of the problems and new opportunities observers and modellers are facing.

High resolution maps of the 12CO J = 6 → 5 line and the [C I]3P2 →3P1 (370 μm) fine-structure transition in the Galactic nebula M17 SW are presented. The maps were obtained using the dual color multiple pixel receiver CHAMP+ on the APEX† telescope.

We present Spitzer Space Telescope observations of 11 regions in the Orion Nebula all southeast of the Bright Bar. Our Cycle 5 program obtained deep spectra with both the IRS short-high (SH) and long-high (LH) modules with aperture grid patterns chosen to very closely match the same area in the nebula. Previous IR missions observed only the inner few arcmin (the ‘Huygens’ region). The extreme sensitivity of Spitzer in the 10-37 μm spectral range permitted us to measure many lines of interest to much larger distances from the exciting star θ1 Ori C.

Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are potential sites of massive star formation, dark in the near-infrared, but in many cases already with indications of active star-formation from far-infrared and submm observations. They are an ideal test bed to study the role of internal and external heating on the structure of the molecular cloud material.

We analyze the statistics and star formation rate obtained in high-resolution numerical experiments of forced supersonic turbulence, and compare with observations. We concentrate on a systematic comparison of solenoidal (divergence-free) and compressive (curl-free) forcing (Federrath et al. 2009 a, b), which are two limiting cases of turbulence driving. Our results show that for the same RMS Mach number, compressive forcing produces a three times larger standard deviation of the density probability distribution. When self-gravity is included in the models, the star formation rate is more than one order of magnitude higher for compressive forcing than for solenoidal forcing.
