Maser emission plays an important role as a tool in star formation studies. It is widely used for deriving kinematics, as well as the physical conditions of different structures, hidden in the dense environment very close to the young stars, for example associated with the onset of jets and outflows. We will summarize here the recent observational and theoretical progress on this topic since the last maser symposium: the IAU Symposium 242 in Alice Springs.

Large-scale Spitzer surveys of the Galactic plane have yielded a new diagnostic for massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) that are actively accreting and driving outflows: extended emission in the IRAC 4.5 μm band, believed to trace shocked molecular gas. Maser studies of these extended 4.5 μm sources (called EGOs, Extended Green Objects, for the common coding of 3-color IRAC images) have been and remain crucial for understanding the nature of EGOs. High detection rates in VLA CH3OH maser surveys provided the first proof that EGOs were indeed MYSOs driving outflows; our recent Nobeyama 45-m survey of northern EGOs shows that the majority are associated with H2O masers. Maser studies of EGOs also provide important constraints for the longstanding goal of a maser evolutionary sequence for MYSOs, particularly in combination with high resolution (sub)mm data. New SMA results show that Class I methanol masers can be excited by both young (hot core) and evolved (ultracompact HII region) sources within the same massive star-forming region.

Class I 44 GHz methanol masers are not as well-known, as common, or as bright as their more famous Class II cousins at 6.7 and 12.2 GHz. Nevertheless, the 44 GHz masers are commonly found in high-mass star forming regions. At times they appear to trace dynamically important phenomena; at other times they show no obvious link to the star formation process. Here, we summarize the major observational efforts to date, including both dedicated surveys and collateral observations. The principal results are presented, some that were expected, and others that were unexpected.

We report the results of multi-epoch very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) water (H2O) maser observations carried out with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) toward the HW3d object within the Cepheus A star-forming region. We measured proper motions of 30 water maser features, tracing a compact bipolar outflow. This outflow is highly collimated, extending through ~400 mas (290 AU), and having a typical proper motion velocity of ~6 mas yr−1 (~21 km s−1). The dynamical timescale of the outflow was estimated to be ~100 years, showing that the outflow is tracing a very early star-formation phase. Our results provide strong support that the HW3d object harbors an internal massive protostar, as previous observations suggested. In addition, we have analyzed Very Large Array (VLA) archive 1.3 cm continuum data of the 1995 and 2006 epochs obtained towards Cepheus A. These results indicate possible different protostars around HW3d and/or strong variability in its radio continuum emission.

To understand the origin of the CH3OH maser emission, we map the distribution and excitation of the thermal CH3OH emission in a sample of 14 relatively nearby (<6 kpc) high-mass star forming regions that are identified through 6.7 GHz maser emission. The images are velocity-resolved and allow us to study the kinematics of the regions. Further, rotation diagrams are created to derive rotation temperatures and column densities of the large scale molecular gas. The effects of optical depth and subthermal excitation are studied with population diagrams. For eight of the sources in our sample the thermal CH3OH emission is compact and confined to a region <0.4 pc and with a central peak close (<0.03 pc) to the position of the CH3OH maser emission. Four sources have more extended thermal CH3OH emission without a clear peak, and for the remaining two sources, the emission is too weak to map. The compact sources have linear velocity gradients along the semi-major axis of the emission of 0.3 – 13 kms−1 pc−1. The rotation diagram analysis shows that in general the highest rotation temperature is found close to the maser position. The confined and centrally peaked CH3OH emission in the compact sources indicates a single source for the CH3OH gas and the velocity fields show signs of outflow in all but one of the sources. The high detection rate of the torsionally excited vt = 1 line and signs of high-K lines at the maser position indicate radiative pumping, though the general lack of measurable beam dilution effects may mean that the masing gas is not sampled well and originates in a very small region.

The recent discovery of methanol maser emission coming from ring-like distributions has led to the plausible hypothesis that they may be tracing circumstellar disks around forming high mass stars. In this article we discuss the distribution of circumstellar material around such young and massive accreting (proto)stars, and what infrared emission geometries would be expected for different disk/outflow orientations. For four targets we then compare the expected infrared geometries (as inferred from the properties of the maser rings) with actual high spatial resolution near-infrared and mid-infrared images. We find that the observed infrared emission geometries are not consistent with the masers residing in circumstellar disks.

Determining an evolutionary clock for high-mass star formation is an important step towards realising a unified theory of star formation, as it will enable qualitative studies of the associated high-mass stars to be executed. We have carried out detailed studies of a large number of sources suspected of undergoing high-mass star formation and have found that common maser transitions offer the best opportunity to determine an evolutionary scheme for these objects. We have investigated the relative evolutionary phases of massive star formation associated with the presence or absence of combinations of water, methanol and main-line hydroxyl masers. The locations of the different maser species have been compared with the positions of 1.2 mm dust clumps, radio continuum, GLIMPSE point sources and Extended Green Objects. Comparison between the characteristics of coincident sources has revealed strong evidence for an evolutionary sequence for the different maser species in high-mass star formation regions. We present our proposed sequence for the presence of the common maser species associated with young high-mass stars and highlight recent advances. We discuss future investigations that will be made in this area by comparing data from the Methanol Multibeam (MMB) Survey with chemical clocks from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz (MALT90) Survey.

Four Class I maser sources were detected at 44, 84, and 95 GHz toward chemically rich outflows in the regions of low-mass star formation NGC 1333I4A, NGC 1333I2A, HH25, and L1157. One more maser was found at 36 GHz toward a similar outflow, NGC 2023. Flux densities of the newly detected masers are no more than 18 Jy, being much lower than those of strong masers in regions of high-mass star formation. The brightness temperatures of the strongest peaks in NGC 1333I4A, HH25, and L1157 at 44 GHz are higher than 2000 K, whereas that of the peak in NGC 1333I2A is only 176 K. However, a rotational diagram analysis showed that the latter source is also a maser. The main properties of the newly detected masers are similar to those of Class I methanol masers in regions of massive star formation. The former masers are likely to be an extension of the latter maser population toward low luminosities of both the masers and the corresponding YSOs.

We have tracked the proper motions of ground-state λ7mm SiO maser emission excited by radio Source I in the Orion BN/KL region. Based on dynamical arguments, Source I is believed to be a hard 20 M⊙ binary. The SiO masers trace a linear bipolar outflow (NE-SW) 100 to 1000 AU from the binary. The median 3D velocity is 18 km s−1. An overlying distribution of 1.3 cm H2O masers betrays similar characteristics. The outflow is aligned with the rotation axis of an edge-on disk and wide angle flow known inside 100 AU. Gas dynamics and emission morphology traced by masers around Source I provide dynamical evidence of a magnetocentrifugal disk-wind around this massive YSO, notably a measured gradient in line-of-sight velocity perpendicular to the flow axis, in the same direction as the disk rotation and with comparable speed. The linearity of the flow, despite the high proper motion of Source I and the proximity of dense gas associated with the Orion Hot Core, is also more readily explained for a magnetized flow. The extended arcs of ground-state maser emission bracketing Source I are a striking feature, in particular since dust formation occurs at smaller radii. We propose that the arcs mark two C-type shocks at the transition radius to super-Alfvénic flow.

W51 Main/South is one of the brightest and richest high-mass star-forming regions (SFR) in the complex W51. It is known to host many ultra-compact HII (UCHII) regions thought to be the site of massive young stellar objects. Maser emission from various species is also found in the region. We have performed MERLIN astrometric observations of excited-OH maser emission at 6.035 GHz and Class II methanol maser emission at 6.668 GHz towards W51 to investigate the relationship between the maser emission and the compact continuum sources in this SFR complex. Here we present the astrometric distributions of both 6.668-GHz methanol and 6.035-GHz excited-OH maser emission in the W51 Main/South region. The location of maser emission in the two lines is compared with that of previously published OH groundstate emission. The interesting coherent velocity and spatial structure observed in the methanol maser distribution as well as the relationship of the masers to infall or outflow in the region are discussed. It appears that the masers are excited by multiple objects potentially at different stages of evolution.

In order to answer this question, we examine the relationship between the two sites of maser activity in G357.96-0.16. We also propose future observations for examining the dust properties of this interesting region of massive star formation.

We collect all published OH, H2O, SiO and CH3OH masers in the literature. The associated infrared sources of these four masers were identified with MSX PSC catalogues. We look for common infrared properties among the sources associated with four masers and make a statistical study. The MSX sources associated with stellar OH, stellar H2O and SiO masers concentrated in a small regions and the MSX sources associated with interstellar OH, interstellar H2O and CH3OH masers also concentrated in a small regions in an [A]-[D].vs.[A][-[E] diagram. These results give us new criterion to search for coexisting stellar maser samples for OH, H2O and SiO masers and interstellar maser samples for OH, H2O and CH3OH masers.

We investigated the high-mass star-forming region G28.87+0.07 by means of maser kinematics, including H2O, CH3OH, and OH, and radio to infrared, continuum observations. All observational evidence suggests that these masers are associated with the same young star of 20-30 M⊙, still in the main accretion phase and surrounded by a rich stellar cluster.

We present and discuss VLA-EVLA high-sensitivity and spatial resolution observations of Water Vapor MASERs and continuum emission towards two sources that have been proposed in the literature to be high-mass star forming regions: IRAS 19217+1651 and 23151+5912. Our results indicate the presence of disks which can confirm that these regions are high-mass star forming regions.

Radio Source I in the Orion BN/KL region provides the closest example of high mass star formation. It powers a rich ensemble of SiO and H2O masers, and is one of only three star-forming regions known to display SiO maser emission. Previous monitoring of different SiO masers with the VLBA and VLA has enabled the resolution of a compact disk and a protostellar wind at radii <100 AU from Source I, which collimates into a bipolar outflow at radii of 100-1000 AU (see contribution by Greenhill et al., this volume). Source I may provide the best case of disk-mediated accretion and outflow recollimation in massive star formation. Here, we report preliminary results of sub-arcsecond resolution 325 GHz H2O maser observations made with the SMA. We find that 325 GHz H2O masers trace a more collimated portion of the Source I outflow than masers at 22 GHz, but occur at similar radii suggesting similar excitation conditions. A velocity gradient perpendicular to the outflow axis, indicating rotation, supports magneto-centrifugal driving of the flow.

We present the outcomes of the consistent analysis of 6 epochs of VLBA 12.2 GHz data obtained between 1995 and 2005 towards the known high-mass star formation reigon NGC7538 IRS1 N. Our analysis concentrates on the study of the main spectral/spatial feature, which is 20 VLBA synthesized beams in size with a distinct velocity gradient. We looked for proper motion signals relative to the central peak which, in an edge-on disc framework, is expected to be stationary. We also study the peak flux and the spatial brightness profile of the main maser feature searching for maser variability. Our results are twofold: we detect a clear proper motion signal of three spatial features (0.21, 0.1, 0.65 mas yr−1) and conclude that these can be made consistent with previous modelling of a Keplerian disc seen edge-on around a high-mass protostar. We further detect a consistent decrease of the peak flux over the time-span 1995-2005 (~ 5.4 Jy yr−1), confirmed when taking into account earlier data (1986, 1987) as well as by the 6.7 GHz maser emission. Also, the width of the spatial brightness profile of the main feature seems to decrease between 1995 and 2005 by some 50%. We consider these observables as clear signs of partial maser saturation.

We present the internal proper motion of 6.7-GHz methanol masers in S269, an Ultra Compact HII region. The maser distribution in S269 consists of several maser groups, and the spatial structure of the main groups A and B are consistent with the past VLBI image. The remarkable result of comparing the two VLBI maps is that 6.7-GHz methanol maser distribution and velocity range within each group have been kept for eight years. Angular separation between the two groups A and B increases by 3.6 mas, which corresponds to a velocity of 11.5 km s−1.

We present the radial velocity acceleration of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser in a high-mass star-forming region Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The methanol maser is associated with an infrared source IRS3. The methanol maser of Mon R2 shows at least three spectral features having radial velocities (Vlsr) of 10.8, 12.7, and 13.2 km s−1. The radial velocity of a feature at Vlsr = 12.7 km s−1 has changed during ten years from Aug. 1999 to Oct. 2009, corresponding to an acceleration of 0.08 km s−1 yr−1. We observed the 6.7 GHz methanol masers of Mon R2 in Oct. 2008 using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). Compared with the previous VLBI image obtained in Nov. 1998 using the European VLBI Network (EVN), the maser feature at Vlsr = 12.7 km s−1 showed relative proper motions of ~2.5 mas yr−1 (about 10 km s−1 at 0.83 kpc) toward the intensity peak of IRS3. The radial velocity acceleration could be caused by an inflow from a disk or envelope around a high-mass young stellar object (YSO) at IRS3.

We present water maser observations toward IRAS 23033+5951 carried out with the VLA-EVLA in the A configuration. In order to study the spatio-kinematical distribution of the water masers detected in the region, we made a simple geometrical and kinematical model based on the conical equation. We find that the water masers are tracing a rotating and contracting circumstellar disk of about 110 AU around a very young source of 18 M⊙, which has not enough ionizing photons to be detected at centimeter wavelengths.

Class II methanol masers are thought to trace the brief phase in the evolution of a massive YSO, where outflows are expected to occur. Molecular line maps of the CO isotopes of a subset of 6.7 GHz sources from the MMB catalogue were observed with the JCMT telescope. Utilising optically thick 12CO, a search was done to detect broadened line wings (initially only on the source G20.08-0.13). The physical parameters of these detected lobes were then calculated.
