In classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) strong shocks are formed where the accretion funnel impacts with the denser stellar chromosphere. Although current models of accretion provide a plausible global picture of this process, some fundamental aspects are still unclear: the observed X-ray luminosity in accretion shocks is order of magnitudes lower than predicted; the observed density and temperature structures of the hot post-shock region are puzzling and still unexplained by models.

To address these issues we performed 2D MHD simulations describing an accretion stream impacting onto the chromosphere of a CTTS, exploring different configurations and strengths of the magnetic field. From the model results we then synthesized the X-ray emission emerging from the hot post-shock, taking into account the local absorption due to the pre-shock stream and surrounding atmosphere.

We find that the different configurations and strengths of the magnetic field profoundly affect the hot post-shock properties. Moreover the emerging X-ray emission strongly depends also on the viewing angle under which accretion is observed. Some of the explored configuration are able to reproduce the observed features of X-ray spectra of CTTS.

We present results of chemical abundance study of a few representative stellar streams of Galactic thick and thin discs. Arcturus stream, which was proposed to have an extragalactic origin, and a recently detected stream called AF06 were studied. Results show a range of metallicity, age and abundance pattern that are consistent with those of Galactic thick disc component. We found similar results for AF06. The abundance and age results unambiguously rule out the possibility that the member stars are vestiges of open clusters. Abundance results of a sample of stars of Sirius and Hercules streams combined with the kinematics show that both the streams belong to the thin disc component. Also, results rule out these are remnants of open clusters. It is likely these streams formed insitu due to perturbations caused by non-axisymmetric components such as bar or spirals.

Type Ibn supernovae (SNIbn) are a small group of core-collapse events whose ejecta interact with a He-rich and H-deprived circumstellar medium. The explosion of the prototype of this family, SN 2006jc, was heralded by a major stellar eruption two years before its core collapse. This unexpected discovery increased significantly the interest of the astronomical community toward these unusual events. A number of other objects have been included to the SNIbn zoo. In these contribution we review our current knowledge on this rare family of interacting, stripped-envelope supernovae (SE-SNe).

Our new survey for Wolf-Rayet stars in the Magellanic Clouds is only 15% complete but has already found 9 new Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This suggests that the total WR population in the LMC may be underestimated by 10-40%. Eight of the nine are of the WN subtype, demonstrating that the “observed” WC to WN ratio is too large, and is biased towards WC stars. The ninth is another rare WO star, the second we have found in the LMC in the past two years. Five (and possibly six) of the 8 WNs are of a new class of WRs, which pose a significant challenge to our understanding. Naively we would classify these stars as “WN3+O3V,” but there are several reasons why such a pairing is unlikely, not the least of which is that the absolute visual magnitudes of these stars are faint, with MV ~ -2.3 to -3.1. We have performed a preliminary analysis with the atmospheric code CMFGEN, and we find that (despite the faint visual magnitudes) the bolometric luminosities of these stars are normal for early-type WNs. Our fitting suggests that these stars are evolved, with significantly enriched N and He. Their effective temperatures are also normal for early-type WNs. What is unusual about these stars is that they have a surprisingly small mass-loss rate compared to other early-type WNs. How these stars got to be the way they are (single star evolution? binary evolution?) remains an open question. For now, we are designating this class as WN3/O3, in analogy to the late-type WN “slash” stars.

We present Herschel/HIFI sub-mm atomic carbon ([Ci] 3P1 – 3P0 and [Ci] 3P2 – 3P1), ionized carbon ([Cii] 2P3/2 – 2P1/2), and ionized nitrogen ([Nii] 3P1 – 3P0) line observations obtained in the frame of the Herschel Guaranteed Time HEXGAL (Herschel EXtraGALactic) key program (P. I. Rolf Güsten, MPIfR), and NANTEN2/SMART carbon monoxide (CO(J = 4 – 3)) observations of the warm gas around the Sgr A region. The spectrally resolved emission from all lines, and the corresponding line intensity ratios, show a very complex morphology. The determination of spatial and spectral (anti)correlation with known sources in the Sgr A region such as the Arched Filaments, NTF filaments, the Sickle, Quintuplet cluster, CND clouds, is ongoing work.

A method of analyses of dynamical system is applied to the planetary restricted three-body problem (RTBP). It is well known, that equations of motion of restricted 3-body problem in rotating rectangular frame may be reduced to the second order differential equation with periodic coefficients (Hills equation). Here Hills equation in cylindrical coordinate frame is derived. It gives the possibility to estimate width and position of the unstable zones. The dependence of the position of unstable zones on orbital eccentricity of the test particle is derived. Some followings of this simple linear model are noted.

We present the first sample of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in the nearby galaxy M33. Studying DIBs in other galaxies allows the behaviour of the carriers to be examined under interstellar conditions which can be quite different from those of the Milky Way, and to determine which DIB properties can be used as reliable probes of extragalactic interstellar media. Multi-object spectroscopy of 43 stars in M33 has been performed using Keck/DEIMOS. The stellar spectral types were determined and combined with literature photometry to determine the M33 reddenings E(B-V)M33. Equivalent widths or upper limits have been measured for the λ5780 DIB towards each star. DIBs were detected towards 20 stars, demonstrating that their carriers are abundant in M33. The relationship with reddening is found to be at the upper end of the range observed in the Milky Way. The line of sight towards one star has an unusually strong ratio of DIB equivalent width to E(B-V)M33, and a total of seven DIBs were detected towards this star.

It is known that the main criterion for the selection of active objects in the First Byurakan, otherwise Markarian survey was the presence of signs of UV-excess in their low-dispersion spectra. Using the presence of emission lines as the second criteria became real during the Second Byurakan survey because of its improved technique. Extended (not stellated) objects, selected with the use of this criterion, made the main part of the separate sample of SBS galaxies. Originally, this sample included 1286 objects, selected in 65 fields of the survey (16 square degree each), to which, with the help of other sources than the survey, there were later added some objects. We studied a subsample of SBS galaxies in seven selected fields (the deepest according to the V/Vmax criterion), including about the third of the whole sample. The first, already completed phase of this program was started with carrying out a follow-up slit spectroscopy of all, about 500 objects, based on observations with long-slit spectrographs with 6m telescope of SAO Russia and 2.6.m telescope of Byurakan. As a result redshifts were determined, as well as spectral classification was made for all of objects, using the scheme adapted to the spectral material. Besides other, obtained data allowed us to estimate the efficiency of used criteria for the selection of galaxies of different classes of starformation and nuclear activity along the full scale of the apparent magnitudes, including close to the limit values (18.5 < mpg < 19.5), etc. The fact that the total area of seven fields as the total number of objects in them comparable with these values for the survey as a whole, allows us to extrapolate the results to the whole sample of galaxies as an upper estimate. The second stage is to conduct detailed studies of individual galaxies in the first place, the most interesting in terms of morphology. They are based on panoramic spectroscopy obtained from observations at 6 m telescope of Russia and 2.6m telescope of Byurakan carried out with multipupil spectrographs MPFS and VAGR, correspondently. Processing of the data obtained for more than twenty objects are at different stages (see arXiv:1403.0127 for extended version).

The star HD 51844 was observed in the CoRoT LRa02 as a target in the seismology field, which turned out to be an SB2 system. The 117-day light curve revealed δ Scuti pulsations in the range of 6 to 15 d−1 where four frequencies have amplitudes larger than 1.4 mmag, and a rich frequency spectrum with amplitudes lower than 0.6 mmag. Additionally, the light curve exhibits a 3-mmag brightening event recurring every 33.5 days with a duration of about 5 days. The radial velocities from spectroscopy confirmed that the star is an eccentric binary system with nearly identical masses and physical parameters. The brightening event in the light curve coincides with the maximum radial-velocity separation showing that the brightening is in fact caused by tidal distortion and/or reflected light. One component displays large line-profile variations, while the other does not show significant variation. The frequency analysis revealed a quintuplet structure of the four highest-amplitude frequencies, which is due to the orbital motion of the pulsating star.

We present preliminary results of the study of star-disk interaction in the classical T Tauri star V354 Mon, a member of the young stellar cluster NGC 2264. As part of an international campaign of observations of NGC 2264 organized from December 2011 to February 2012, high resolution photometric and spectroscopic data of this object were obtained simultaneously with the Chandra, CoRoT and Spitzer satellites, and ground-based telescopes, such as CFHT and ESO/VLT. The optical and infrared light curves of V354 Mon show periodic brightness minima that vary in depth and width every 5.21 days rotational cycle. We found evidence that the Hα emission line profile changes according to the period of photometric variations, indicating that the same phenomenon causes both modulations. Such correlation was also identified in a previous observational campaign on the same object, where we concluded that material non-uniformly distributed in the inner part of the disk is the main cause of the photometric modulation. This assumption is supported by the fact that the system is seen at high inclination. It is believed that this distortion of the inner part of the disk results from the dynamical interaction between the stellar magnetosphere, inclined with respect to the rotation axis, and the circumstellar disk, as also observed in the classical T Tauri star AA Tau, and predicted by magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations. A model of occultation by circumstellar material was applied to the photometric data in order to determine the parameters of the obscuring material during both observational campaigns, thus providing an investigation of its stability on a timescale of a few years. We also studied V422 Mon, a classical T Tauri star with photometric variations similar to those of V354 Mon at optical wavelengths, but with a distinct behavior in the infrared. The mechanism that produces such a difference is investigated, testing the predictions of magnetospheric accretion models.

Not long ago the sample of well studied supernovae, which were gathered mostly through targeted surveys, was populated exclusively by events with absolute peak magnitudes fainter than about −20. Modern searches that select supernovae not just from massive hosts but from dwarfs as well have produced a new census with a surprising difference: a significant percentage of supernovae found in these flux limited surveys peak at −21 magnitude or brighter. The energy emitted by these superluminous supernovae in optical light alone rivals the total explosion energy available to typical core collapse supernovae (>1051 erg). This makes superluminous supernovae difficult to explain through standard models. Adding further complexity to this picture are the distinct observational properties of various superluminous supernovae. Some may be powered in part by interactions with a hydrogen-rich, circumstellar material but others appear to lack hydrogen altogether. Some could be powered by large stores of radioactive material, while others fade quickly and have stringent limits on 56-Ni production. In this talk I will discuss the current observational constrains on superluminous supernova and the prospects for revealing their origins.

We examine the light curves of over 2700 stars observed in long cadence by the Kepler spacecraft as part of the Guest Observer program. Most of these stars are faint (Kepler magnitude > 14), and fall near or within the effective temperature and log g range of the γ Dor and δ Sct instability strips. We find that the pulsating stars are obvious from inspection of the light curves and power spectra, even for these faint stars. However, we find that a large number of stars are ‘constant’, i.e. show no frequencies in the 0.2 to 24 d−1 range above the 20 ppm level. We discuss the statistics for the constant stars, and some possible physical reasons for lack of pulsations. On the other hand, γ Dor and δ Sct candidates have been found in the Kepler data spread throughout and even outside of the instability regions of both types that were established from pre-Kepler ground-based observations. We revisit mechanisms to produce g- or p-mode pulsations in conditions when these modes are not expected to be unstable via the He-ionization κ effect (δ Sct) or convective blocking (γ Dor) pulsation driving mechanisms.

In a quest to further our understanding of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) as well as the unidentified carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), we are mapping DIBs across the sky using hundreds of hot stars as background torches – globular clusters (in particular ω Centauri), nearby stars in and around the Local Bubble, and stars within the Magellanic Clouds. I describe the results so far obtained and our current experiments.

It is now generally believed that the Galaxy was formed through hierarchical merging, which means that different components of the Galaxy may have experienced different chemical evolution histories. Since alpha elements are mainly produced by core collapse supernovae, they are closely associated with the star formation history of the Galaxy. In this regard, Galactic components with different alpha elemental abundance patterns may show different behaviors in beryllium abundances since the production of beryllium is correlated with the cosmic rays and thus the supernovae. A recent study by Nissen & Schuster (2010) has revealed the existence of two distinct halo populations in the solar neighborhood based on the alpha elemental abundances and kinematics of 94 dwarf stars. We determined beryllium abundances for some of these stars and find systematic differences in beryllium abundances between these two halo populations. Our results consolidate the conclusion of two distinct halo populations in the solar neighborhood. Our results also show that beryllium abundance is a very good indicator of star formation rate, and could be used to trace the substructures of the Galactic halo.

Massive stars often experience fast rotation, which is known to induce turbulent mixing with a strong impact on the evolution of these stars. Local direct numerical simulations of turbulent transport in stellar radiative zones are a promising way to constrain phenomenological transport models currently used in many stellar evolution codes. We present here the results of such simulations of stably-stratified sheared turbulence taking notably into account the effects of thermal diffusion and chemical stratification. We also discuss the impact of theses results on stellar evolution theory.

The theoretical three body problem, with three given non infinitesimal point masses, has two types of oscillating motions. In the first type at least two mutual distances are unbounded, but their inferior limit is bounded: there are an infinite number of larger and larger ejections, but without escape. In the second type, it is the velocities that are unbounded: there are an infinite number of nearer and nearer quasi-collisions, without exact collisions.

The first type has only a theoretical interest: its measure in phase space is zero. But the second type has a positive measure in phase space and a physical interest: it governs most of the collisions of stars.

The diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are a set of absorption features, some of which are broad (“diffuse”), that are formed in the diffuse ISM. Since their discovery nearly a century ago their numbers have increased to over 500. The strongest of these are known to be ubiquitous in the universe. There is general consensus that they are produced by large carbon-bearing molecules; however, no specific identification of any single DIB has survived scrutiny. The overwhelming majority of DIBs are at optical and very near infrared wavelengths. In 1990 two DIBs were identified in J-band spectra, at 1.18 μm and 1.31 μm by Joblin et al. (1990); until recently these were the longest wavelength examples known.

Active galaxies are the most luminous objects observed in the Universe and are believed to be powered by mass accretion processes taking place in the vicinity of the central Super massive black hole (MBH ≥ 108Msun). However, the details of the power generation mechanisms are not understood well yet. In this paper, we are presenting a comparative study of luminosity-distance estimations for the complete sample of active galaxies observed by IUE satellite by different methods. IUE has made UV spectroscopic observations of nearly 400 active galaxies comprising mostly Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars. We have chosen all the active galaxies observed by IUE satellite for the study of luminosity-distance with redshift. The luminosity-distances (DL) have been calculated using the Hubbles law under non-relativistic and relativistic limits with H0 = 73 Km/sec/Mpc and Terrell (1979) also. We have found that all DL estimations are consistent with each other for z ≤ 1 and diverge for z ≥ 1. The results of cosmological calulator I and II are found to consistent with each other and higher by several factors over cosmological calculator IV and the predictions of the Hubble's law under relativistic case. We observe a kind bimodal distributions in DL for z ≤ 3.5.

Recent spectropolarimetric observations suggest that young low-mass stars such as classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) possess relatively strong (~kG) magnetic field. This supports a scenario in which the final accretion onto the stellar surface proceeds through a magnetosphere, and the winds are formed in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) processes. We examine recent numerical simulations of magnetospheric accretions via an inclined dipole and a complex magnetic fields. The difference between a stable accretion regime, in which accretion occurs in ordered funnel streams, and an unstable regime, in which gas penetrates through the magnetosphere in several unstable streams due to the magnetic Rayleigh-Taylor instability, will be discussed. We describe how MHD simulation results can be used in separate radiative transfer (RT) models to predict observable quantiles such as line profiles and light curves. The plausibility of the accretion flows and outflows predicted by MHD simulations (via RT models) can be tested against observations. We also address the issue of outflows/winds that arise from the innermost part of CTTSs. First, we discuss the line formations in a simple disk wind and a stellar wind models. We then discuss the formation of the conically shaped magnetically driven outflow that arises from the disk-magnetosphere boundary when the magnetosphere is compressed into an X-type configuration.

The Sun is located inside an enormous local cavity filled with a million degree, ionized hydrogen gas and surrounded by a wall of dense and cold gas, this cavity is known as the Local Bubble (LB). Since the tempreture of Local Bubble is high, the typical singly-ionized atoms or molecules can not survive at this high tempreture. To overcome this problem we should probe the Local Bubble using species which survive under this condition so we have done a whole sky survey in north hemisphere by observing absorptions in the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) for sight-lines with distance >300 pc. We have done 30 nights observation and have observed 473 bright stars. We found that the correlations between 5780 Å DIBs and Na I D doublets inside of the LB is much more than carriers outside of the LB.
