Cyclical wind variability is an ubiquitous but as yet unexplained feature among OB stars. The O7.5 III(n)((f)) star ξ Persei is the brightest representative of this class on the Northern hemisphere. As its prominent cyclical wind properties vary on a rotational time scale (2 or 4 days) the star has been already for a long time a serious magnetic candidate. As the cause of this enigmatic behavior non-radial pulsations and/or a surface magnetic field are suggested. We present a preliminary report on our attempts to detect a magnetic field in this star with high-resolution measurements obtained with the spectropolarimeter Narval at TBL, France during 2 observing runs of 5 nights in 2006 and 5 nights in 2007. Only upper limits could be obtained, even with the longest possible exposure times. If the star hosts a magnetic field, its surface strength should be less than about 300 G. This would still be enough to disturb the stellar wind significantly. From our new data it seems that the amplitude of the known non-radial pulsations has changed within less than a year, which needs further investigation.

Spectrophotometric observations of the complete sample of twenty four blue stragglers (BSs) in the old galactic open cluster M67 (NGC2682) have been collected, using the Guillermo Haro Observatory in Cananea, Mexico. All the calibrated spectra were re-calibrated by the Beijing Arizona Taipei Connecticut (BATC) photometric system which includes fluxes in 11 photometric bands covering ~3600–10000 Å. The goal of the current work is to provide observational constraints on spectral properties of BSs by determining the effective temperature (Teff) and surface gravity (log g). The overall results, obtained by applying the flux fitting method, indicate that Teff and surface gravities of BSs in M67 are fully compatible with those expected for main sequence stars.

The dynamics of fluctuations in a closed coronal structure is regulated both by resonance with motions at bases that stores energy in the structure in form of discrete eigenmodes, and by nonlinear couplings that move this energy along the spectrum to smaller scales. The energy balance is evaluated both analytically and, numerically, using an hybrid shell model. The input energy flux is independent of nonlinear effects and is determined by slow (DC) perturbations. Coherent eigenmode couplings determine the nonlinear energy flux and, consequently, the level of fluctuations at large scales. The estimated velocity fluctuation level is in agreement with measures of nonthermal velocity in corona. The resulting turbulence spectrum contains both a pre-inertial range where coherent interactions dominate, and a standard inertial range where the turbulence behaves as in an unbounded system.

While gaseous carbon-rich species in cometary comae (coming from the nuclei icy component) are extensively studied by spectroscopic remote observations, so-called CHONs dust particles, i. e. organic compounds coming from the nuclei refractory component, have mostly been studied by dust mass spectrometers flying through the comae of comets 1P/Halley and 81P/Wild 2. However, remote observations of the light scattered by dust in cometary comae and in the interplanetary medium, coupled with both numerical and experimental simulations, have recently allowed us to confirm that such particles harbor a significant fraction of absorbing material, presumably consisting of organic compounds (Levasseur-Regourd et al. PSS 2007, Lasue et al. A&A 2007).

We estimate the fraction of absorbing material present in cometary dust for extensively observed comets (e.g., 1P/Halley, C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp) and in the interplanetary dust (from zodiacal light observations). We also establish that, besides compact particles, fluffy aggregates are definitely present in these media. The properties (e.g., size distribution, morphology, composition) of the cometary and interplanetary dust particles, as inferred from light scattering data analysis, are compared with those of the IDPS collected in the upper Earth atmosphere and of the unique samples returned by the Stardust mission at Wild 2. The results are discussed in terms of the formation of comets in the protosolar nebula, and of the possible survival, at the epoch of late early bombardment, of cometary organics embedded in fluffy aggregates.

Oe stars are a subset of the O-type stars that exhibit emission lines from a circumstellar disk. The recent detection of magnetic fields in some O-type stars suggests a possible explanation for the stability of disk-like structures around Oe stars. According to this hypothesis, the wind of the star is channeled by a dipolar magnetic field producing a disc in the magnetic equatorial plane. As a test of this model, we have obtained spectropolarimetric observations of the hottest Galactic Oe star HD 155806. Here we discuss its results and implications.

The population of Saturn's outermost tenuous E-ring is dominated by tiny water ice particles, some of which contain organic or mineral impurities. Active cryo-volcanism on the moon Enceladus, embedded in the E-ring, has been known to be a major source of particles replenishing the ring since late 2005. Therefore, particles in the vicinity of Enceladus provide crucial information about the dynamic and chemical processes occurring far below the moon's icy surface.

We present a compositional analysis of thousands of impact ionisation mass spectra of Saturn's E-ring particles, with sizes predominantly below 1 μm, detected by the Cosmic Dust Analyser onboard the Cassini spacecraft. Our findings imply that organic compounds are a significant component of icy particles ejected by Enceladus plumes. Our in situ measurements are supported by detections of other Cassini instruments. They hint at a dynamic interaction of a hot rocky core with liquid water below the icy surface, where the organic molecules are generated. Further insights are expected from two close Enceladus flybys to be performed by Cassini in 2008. Then, for the first time, we will obtain spectra of freshly ejected particles at the traversals through the cryo-volcanic plumes.

At present, 117 Be/neutron star (Be/NS) X-ray binaries (XRBs) are known in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, but not a single Be/black hole (Be/BH) binary was found so far. We carried out the calculations of stellar population synthesis to investigate the case of the apparently missing population of Be/BH XRBs. According to our calculations, the main reason of this disparity is the fact that within the orbital period range where Be XRBs are found (~10 to ~300 days), these systems are formed predominantly with a NS component. The systems with a BH component are formed predominantly with much longer orbital periods and they are not easy to detect.

In the last decade there has been a tremendous increase of interest in studying processes occurring on IS dust. In part this is due to the availability of ground-based and space-borne high quality instruments which have been used to detect molecules in diverse astrophysical environments, from protoplanetary disks to hot cores and dense clouds. It has also been recognized that IS dust has an important role in the formation of molecules, from molecular hydrogen to methanol. Therefore, it is necessary not to study only properties of dust, but also understand how atoms and molecules interact with and on dust.

The propagation of Alfvén waves from the photosphere into the corona with regard to the fine structure of the magnetic field is considered. The energy flux of Alfvén–type waves generated in the photosphere by convective motions does not depend on the ionization ratio. The reflection coefficient continuously decreases with a decrease of wave period. Influence of the external magnetic field on the Spruit cutoff frequency for transverse (kink) modes excited in the thin magnetic flux tubes is analyzed. Torsional modes can penetrate into the upper atmosphere most effectively since their amplitudes does not increase with height in the photosphere while kink ones can be transformed into shock waves in the lower chromosphere because of a significant increase of amplitudes. In spite of stratification the linearity of Alfvén–type modes in the chromosphere is conserved due to violation of the WKB approximation. The important role of the magnetic canopy is discussed. Alfvén waves generated by convective motions in the photosphere can contribute significantly to the heating of the coronal plasma in quite regions of the Sun.

Exoplanet search programs need to study how to disentangle radial-velocity (RV) variations due to Doppler motion and the noise induced by stellar activity. We monitored the active K2V HD 189733 with the high-resolution SOPHIE spectrograph (OHP, France). We refined the orbital parameters of HD 189733b and put limitations on the eccentricity and on a long-term velocity gradient. We subtracted the orbital motion of the planet and compared the variability of activity spectroscopic indices (HeI, Hα, Ca II H&K lines) to the evolution of the RV residuals and the shape of spectral lines. All are in agreement with an active stellar surface in rotation. We used such correlations to correct for the RV jitter due to stellar activity. This results in achieving a high precision on the orbital parameters, with a semi-amplitude: K=200.56±0.88m⋅s−1 and a derived planet mass of MP=1.13±0.03 MJup.

The gravitational stratification effect on magnetohydrodynamic waves at a single interface in the solar atmosphere has been studied in the penumbral region of the sunspot recently. The existence of slow and fast magneto acoustic gravity waves and their characteristics has been discussed. The effect of flows on magneto acoustic gravity surface waves leads to modes called flow modes or v-modes. The present geometry is that of a plasma slab moving with uniform velocity surrounded by a plasma of different density. As is applicable to the corona, we assume that the plasma β to be small. The dispersion characteristics change significantly with a change in the value of G (gravity) and uniform flow.

Commission 41 of the International Astronomical Union deals with all aspects of astronomical history and heritage from ancient sky knowledge to developments in modern astronomy that have occurred within living memory. It encourages and supports research in the history of astronomy and related fields such as archaeoastronomy and is also concerned with the identification, documentation and preservation of vital aspects of our astronomical heritage such as sites, artifacts, instruments and archives. Commission 41 is one of the largest Commissions in the Union, and is a member of Division XII on Union-Wide Activities.

To interpret the concentrations of the products measured in Titan's atmosphere and to better understand the associated chemistry, many theoretical models have been developed so far. Unfortunately, large discrepancies are still found between theoretical and observational data. A critical examination of the chemical scheme included in these models points out some problems regarding the reliability of the description of critical reaction pathways as well as the accuracy of kinetic parameters. Laboratory experiments can be used to reduce these two sources of uncertainty. It can be:

i) experimental simulations: in our laboratory (LISA), representative Titan's simulation experiments are planned to be carried out in a reactor where the initial gas mixture will be exposed, for the first time, to both electrons and photons. Thus, the chemistry between N atoms and CH3, CH2, CH fragments, issued from electron dissociation of N2 and photo-dissociation of CH4 respectively, will be initiated. Thank to a time resolved technique, we will be able to analyse “in situ”, qualitatively and quantitatively, the stable species as well as the short life intermediates. Then, the implied chemistry will be determined precisely, and consequently, its description will be refined in theoretical models. The current status of this program will be given.

ii) specific experiments: they are devoted, for example, to determine kinetic rate constants and low temperature VUV spectra that will be used to feed models and to interpret observational data. Such experiments performed in LISA and in Rennes' laboratory concern polyynes and cyanopolyynes as these compounds could link the gaseous and the solid phase in planetary atmosphere. Results concerning C4H+ hydrocarbons kinetic rate constants and VUV cross section of HC3N and HC5N will be detailed.

We present Spitzer 8 μm transit observations of the extrasolar planet system HD 149026b. At this wavelength, transit light curves are weakly affected by stellar limb-darkening, allowing for a simpler and more accurate determination of planetary parameters. We measure a planet-star radius ratio of Rp/R∗=0.05158±0.00077, and in combination with ground-based data and independent constraints on the stellar mass and radius, we derive an orbital inclination of i = 85°.4+0°.9−0°.8 and a planet radius of 0.755 ± 0.040 RJ. These measurements further support models in which the planet is greatly enriched in heavy elements.

Massive stars are those stars with initial masses above about 8 times that of the sun, eventually leading to catastrophic explosions in the form of supernovae. These represent the most massive and luminous stellar component of the Universe, and are the crucibles in which the lion's share of the chemical elements are forged. These rapidly-evolving stars drive the chemistry, structure and evolution of galaxies, dominating the ecology of the Universe - not only as supernovae, but also during their entire lifetimes - with far-reaching consequences. Although the existence of magnetic fields in massive stars is no longer in question, our knowledge of the basic statistical properties of massive star magnetic fields is seriously incomplete. The Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) Project represents a comprehensive, multidisciplinary strategy by an international team of recognized researchers to address the “big questions” related to the complex and puzzling magnetism of massive stars. This paper present the first results of the MiMeS Large Program at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope.

Long baseline interferometers now measure the angular diameters of nearby stars with sub-percent accuracy. They can be translated in photospheric radii when the parallax is known, thus creating a novel and powerful constraint for stellar models. I present applications of interferometric radius measurements to the modeling of main sequence stars. Over the last few years, we obtained accurate measurements of the linear radius of many of the nearest stars: Procyon A, 61 Cyg A & B, α Cen A & B, Sirius A, Proxima. . . Firstly, I describe the example of our modeling of Procyon A (F5IV-V) with the CESAM code, constrained using spectrophotometry, the linear radius, and asteroseismic frequencies. I also present our recent results on the low-mass 61 Cyg system (K5V+K7V), for which asteroseismic frequencies have not been detected yet.

The Working Group Archives deals with all aspects of the identification and preservation of astronomical archives. In 2009 the IAU will celebrate its 90th anniversary, and on this occasion the WG is taking action toward preserving the archival materials related with the history of IAU. An institution must keep memory of its own past and, as the centenary of IAU is approaching, for the 2006-2009 triennium the WG Archives has started evaluating the archival collections related to the establishment of IAU, in order to check their extent and the current conditions of preservation and conservation of such documents.

We present the results of the continuation of our magnetic survey with FORS 1 at the VLT of a sample of B-type stars consisting of confirmed or candidate β Cephei stars and Slowly Pulsating B stars. Roughly one third of the studied β Cephei stars have detected magnetic fields. The fraction of magnetic Slowly Pulsating B and candidate Slowly Pulsating B stars is found to be higher, up to 50%. We find that the domains of magnetic and non-magnetic pulsating stars in the H-R diagram largely overlap, and no clear picture emerges as to the possible evolution of the magnetic field across the main sequence.

EPOXI (EPOCh + DIXI) is a NASA Discovery Program Mission of Opportunity using the Deep Impact flyby spacecraft. The EPOCh (Extrasolar Planet Observation and Characterization) Science Investigation will gather photometric time series of known transiting exoplanet systems from January through August 2008. Here we describe the steps in the photometric extraction of the time series and present preliminary results of the first four EPOCh targets.

Ion-neutral chemistry in Titan's upper atmosphere (~ 1000 km altitude) is an unexpectedly prodigious source of hydrocarbon-nitrile compounds. We report observations from the Cassini Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer (INMS; Waite et al. 2004) and Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS; Young et al. 2004) that allow us to follow the formation of the organic material from the initial ionization and dissociation of nitrogen and methane driven by several free energy sources (extreme ultraviolet radiation and energetic ions and electrons) to the formation of negative ions with masses exceeding 10,000 amu.
