Based on a self-consistent coupling between protoplanetary disk thermodynamics, photosphere geometry and dynamics we designed a 1D-hydrodynamical numerical model for the spreading of the disks as a function of the star characteristics. We found that the evolution timescale increases for more massive or for a steeper surface density disk, and decreases for bigger stars or less turbulent disks. We found a strong dependency of the mass accretion rate versus the disk mass and a weaker dependency versus the star mass. Coupled with observed similar conclusions, we derived that the disk mass is scaling as M*1.6.

The broadband SEDs of four gamma-ray NLS1s are compiled and explained with the leptonic model. It is found that their characteristics and fitting parameters of the observed SEDs are more like FSRQs than BL Lacs.

By collecting 17 short gamma-ray bursts with necessary data, we find a correlation of Lp ∝ Ep,i1.7, which is very consistent with that derived from a greatly expanded sample of 148 Swift long gamma-ray bursts. It is argued that the radiation mechanism of both long and short gamma-ray bursts should be similar, i.e., of quasi-thermal origin caused by the photosphere and the dissipation occurring very near the central engine. In addition, we suggest that the Ep,i-Lp relation can be used to identified a burst among normal short bursts, short bursts with extended emission and long bursts with short-hard properties. We also find the ratio of peak energy to fluence in the prompt γ-ray band is a prospective discriminator, similar to the traditional duration time.

The relationship between star formation rate (SFR) and the gas surface density (Σgas) is one of the most critical links between star formation and galaxy evolution. The observed SFR- Σgas relation, the “Schmidt-Kennicutt (S-K) law”, is tight when properties are averaged over kpc, but breaks down at the scale of giant molecular clouds (GMCs). To understand the physics governing the variations at GMC scales and the tight correlation at kpc scales, spatially and temporally resolved data covering a wide range of linear scale are needed. We have used the Spitzer surveys of the Large Magellanic Cloud and Magellanic Bridge to identify massive young stellar objects (YSOs), estimate “instantaneous” SFRs, and compare them to the S-K relation. These instantaneous SFRs are further compared to that estimated from integrated Hα and 24 μm luminosities to examine how SFRs vary on 10 Myr timescales. We have also used SINFONI near-IR integral field spectra of two Galactic mini-starbursts W31 and W43 to determine their underlying massive stellar content, estimate the SFRs, and compare to the S-K relation. To investigate evironmental effects on star formation, we have used complete YSO samples in the LMC and the Bridge to estimate global star formation efficiencies (SFE) in these two systems.

We present a systematic study of the evolution of intermediate- and low-mass X-ray binaries. Our calculations suggest that millisecond binary pulsars in wide orbits might have neutron stars born massive, or been formed through mass transfer driven by planet/brown dwarf-involved common envelope evolution.

We investigated the large scale atmospheric circulation of Gl581g, a potentially habitable planet around an M dwarf star, using an idealized dry global circulation model (GCM) with simplified thermal forcing as a first step towards a systematic extended parameter study. The results are compared with the work of Joshi et al. (1997) who investigated a tidally-locked habitable Earth analogue with less than half the rotation period of Gl581g. The extent, form and strength of the atmospheric circulation in each model generally agree with each other, even though the models differ in key parameters such as planetary radius, surface gravity, forcing scheme and rotation period. The substellar point is associated with an uprising direct circulation-branch of a Hadley-like cell with return flow over the poles. It is compelling to assume that the substellar point of a tidally locked terrestrial exoplanet behaves dynamically like the Earth's tropic associated with clouds and precipitation, making it an ideal target for habitability.

We investigated pulse intensities of PSR B0950+08 at 112 MHz at various longitudes (phases) and detected very strong pulses exceeding the amplitude of the mean profile by more than one hundred times. The maximum peak flux density of a recorded pulse is 15240 Jy, and the energy of this pulse exceeds the mean pulse energy by a factor of 153. The analysis shows that the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of pulse intensities at the longitudes of the main pulse is described by a piece-wise power law, with a slope changing from n=−1.25 ± 0.04 to n=−1.84 ± 0.07 at I≥600 Jy. The CDF for pulses at the longitudes of the precursor has a power law with n=−1.5 ± 0.1. Detected giant pulses from this pulsar have the same signature as giant pulses of other pulsars.

The biosignatures of life on Earth are not fixed, but change with time as environmental conditions change and life living within those environments adapts to the new conditions. A latitude-based climate model, incorporating orbital parameter variations, was used to simulate conditions on the far-future Earth as the Sun enters the late main sequence. Over time, conditions increasingly favour a unicellular microbial biosphere, which can persist for a maximum of 2.8 Gyr from present. The biosignature changes associated with the likely biosphere changes are evaluated using a biosphere-atmosphere gas exchange model and their detectability is discussed. As future Earth-like exoplanet discoveries could be habitable planets nearing the end of their habitable lifetimes, this helps inform the search for the signatures of life beyond Earth

I review observational studies of the large-scale star formation process in nearby galaxies. A wealth of new multi-wavelength data provide an unprecedented view on the interplay of the interstellar medium and (young) stellar populations on a few hundred parsec scale in 100+ galaxies of all types. These observations enable us to relate detailed studies of star formation in the Milky Way to the zoo of galaxies in the distant universe. Within the disks of spiral galaxies, recent star formation strongly scales with the local amount of molecular gas (as traced by CO) with a molecular gas depletion time of ∼2 Gyr. This is consistent with the picture that stars form in giant molecular clouds that have about universal properties. Galaxy centers and star-bursting galaxies deviate from this normal trend as they show enhanced star formation per unit gas mass suggesting systematic changes in the molecular gas properties and especially the dense gas fraction. In the outer disks of spirals and in dwarf galaxies, the decreasing availability of atomic gas inevitably limits the amount of star formation, though with large local variations. The critical step for the gas-stars cycle seems therefore to be the formation of a molecular gas phase, a process that shows complex dependencies on various environmental properties and is being investigated by intensive simulational work.

X-ray source IGR J17091-3624 was discovered by INTEGRAL observatory on 2003 April (Kuulkers 2003). A outburst was detected with Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) in late January 2011 (Krimm 2011). IGR J17091-3624 has a similar timing phenomena to microquasar GRS 1915+105(Belloni 2000; Altamirano 2011). We have analyzed the evolution of temporal and spectral characteristic of IGR J17091-3624 during the 2011 outburst. We find that (1) all the QPOs can be divided into two types, QPO-AB and QPO-C, (2) a small outburst tracks clockwise in the HID, (3) the relationship between hardness and disk color temperature forms a V-shape. Those results will give a strong constraint on the disk radiative process.

The observational study of star formation laws is paramount to disentangling the physical processes at work on local and global scales in galaxies. To this aim we have expanded the sample of extreme starbursts, represented by local LIRGs and ULIRGs, with high-quality data obtained in the 1-0 line of HCN. The analysis of the new data shows that the star formation efficiency of the dense molecular gas, derived from the FIR/HCN luminosity ratio, is a factor 3-4 higher in extreme starbursts compared to normal galaxies. We find a duality in the Kennicutt-Schmidt laws that is enhanced if we account for the different conversion factor for HCN (αHCN) in extreme starbursts and correct for the unobscured star formation rate in normal galaxies. We find that it is possible to fit the observed differences in the FIR/HCN ratios between normal galaxies and LIRGs/ULIRGs with a common constant star formation rate per free-fall time (SFRff) if we assume that HCN densities are ∼1–2 orders of magnitude higher in LIRGs/ULIRGs, and provided that SFRff∼0.005-0.01 and/or if αHCN is a factor of a few lower than our favored values.

Planets cool and contract as they age, with a cooling rate that depends on the efficiency with which they can transport heat out to space, first through the convective interior and then radiatively out through the atmosphere. The bottleneck for this cooling is the radiative-convective boundary (RCB), where the heat transport is the least efficient. Due to differential heating and atmospheric dynamics, the depth of the RCB can vary with latitude and longitude, meaning that the actual global cooling rate may differ from what would be calculated assuming a spherically symmetric RCB, as in 1D evolutionary models. Here we present models of the deep atmosphere of a generic hot Jupiter, calculate inhomogeneity in the RCB, and determine the resulting effect on the global thermal evolution. Although this issue can apply to any differentially heated gas giant, we focus on the hot Jupiter class of planet because: 1) the thick radiative zones above their deep RCBs can have a stronger influence on deforming the surface of the RCB than would generally be the case for a less-irradiated planet, and 2) an uneven RCB should increase the cooling rate, potentially exacerbating the mismatch between the large radii measured for some hot Jupiters and the smaller radii expected from evolutionary models.

Active neutron stars – SGRs, reveal the high-quality QPOs at the ‘pulsating tail’ phase. We suggest diagnostics of the trapped fireball plasma, the source of high-frequency pulsations, using coronal seismology. The trapped fireball is represented as a set of current-carrying loops - equivalent of electric circuits. Our approach gives the following magnetosphere parameters in SGRs: an electric current of (2−8) × 1019 A, magnetic field of (0.6−2.7) × 1013 G, and electrons density of (1.3−6.0) × 1016 cm−3. We show high-frequency QPOs can be self-excited for a smaller electric current than the maximum current and/or due to the parametric resonance.

We report 4-epoch VLBA observations of 3C 66A at 22GHz. The resulting images show a typical core-jet structure. We combine our results with some previous results to investigate the proper motions of the jet components. The kinematics of 3C 66A is quite complicated; mildly superluminal motions as well as apparent inward motions have been detected for some components. The inward motions may imply position change of the observed core.

Merging systems at low redshift provide the unique opportunity to study the processes related to star formation in a variety of environments that presumably resemble those seen at higher redshifts. Previous studies of distant starbursting galaxies suggest that stars are born in turbulent gas, with a higher efficiency than in MW-like spirals. We have investigated in detail the turbulent-driven regime of star-formation in nearby colliding galaxies combining high resolution VLA B array Hi maps and UV GALEX observations. With these data, we could check predictions of our state-of-the-art simulations of mergers, such as the global sharp increase of the fraction of dense gas, as traced by the SFR, with respect to the diffuse gas traced by Hi during the merging stage, following the increased velocity dispersion of the gas. We present here initial results obtained studying the SFR-Hi relation at 4.5 kpc resolution. We determined SFR/Hi mass ratios that are higher in the external regions of mergers than in the outskirts of isolated spirals, though both environments are Hi dominated. SFR/Hi increases towards the central regions following the decrease of the atomic gas fraction and possibly the increased star–formation efficiency. These results need to be checked with a larger sample of systems and on smaller spatial scales. This is the goal of the on-going Chaotic THINGS project that ultimately will allow us to determine why starbursting galaxies deviate from the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation between SFR density and gas surface density.

Particles in protoplanetary discs grow rapidly to millimetre-sizes via coagulation, but further growth to centimetre-sized pebbles is not yet completely understood. We investigate particle growth by ice condensation in a model where we take the dynamical behaviour of vapour and ice particles into account, as well as the size evolution due to condensation and sublimation. Our results show that efficient growth from dust to pebbles is possible close to the water ice line at ~3 AU, with particles growing from millimetres to decimetres on a time scale of 10000 yr.

We investigate the radius of the recycled pulsar in double pulsar PSR J0737-3039. In the standard accretion spin-up model, the recycled pulsar spin up continues until arriving at a minimum spin period, or so-called “equilibrium period”, which is related to stellar magnetic field, accretion rate, mass and radius. If present spin period is much longer than that at birth, the spin-down age can give the realistic true age estimation for normal pulsar J0737-3039B. Base on the above conditions, we estimate the radius of millisecond pulsar (MSP) J0737-3039A by assuming its true age is same as the spin-down age of its companion J0737-3039B. We obtained that the radius of J0737-3039A ranges approximately from 5 to 27 km.

We report the discovery of a new pulsar PSR J1839+15, having a period of 549 ms and a DM of 68 pc cm−3. We also present its timing solution and report the intermittent behaviour of its radio emission.

We discuss two methods to estimate black hole (BH) masses using X-ray data only: from the X-ray variability amplitude and from the photon index Γ. The first method is based on the anti-correlation between BH mass and X-ray variability amplitude. Using a sample of AGN with BH masses from reverberation mapping, we show that this method shows small intrinsic scatter. The second method is based on the correlation between Γ and both the Eddington ratio Lbol/LEdd and the bolometric correction Lbol/L2−10keV.

Observations of radio emission from exoplanets and brown dwarfs suggest that such objects harbour atmospheric magnetized plasmas. However, the degree of thermal ionization for such substellar objects is insufficient to qualify the ionized component as a plasma, posing the question: what ionization processes can efficiently produce the required plasma? We propose Alfvén ionization as a mechanism for producing localized pockets of ionized gas in the atmosphere, having sufficient degrees of ionization (≥10−7) that they constitute plasmas. We outline the criteria required for Alfvén ionization to occur and justify its applicability in substellar atmospheres. For the model atmospheres considered here, our results show that degrees of ionization ranging from 10−6−1 can be obtained.
