We used VLBI observations at 8.4 GHz between 1991 and 2005 to determine the motion of the RS CVn binary IM Pegasi (HR 8703), the guide star for the NASA/Stanford gyroscope relativity mission, Gravity Probe B (GP-B). The motion was determined relative to our primary reference, the core of the quasar 3C 454.3. The stability of this core was checked relative to two other extragalactic sources, B2250+194 and B2252+172, the former of which was tied to the ICRF. The core of 3C 454.3 is stationary relative to these two sources to within 30 μas yr−1 in each coordinate. IM Pegasi's radio morphology varies, but appears to be on average centered on the primary. We estimate the proper motion of IM Pegasi with a statistical standard error (sse) of 30 μas yr−1 in each coordinate. We also estimate the parallax with a statistical standard error of 75 μas and parameters of the orbit with sse's corresponding to 110 μas on the sky. Coupled with our upper limit of three times the sse on any systematic errors in each parameter %threefold higher upper limit on the systematic error contributions to each parameter estimate, these results ensure that the uncertainty of IM Pegasi's proper motion makes only a small contribution to the uncertainty of GP-B's tests of general relativity.

The cold dark matter (CDM) scenario generically predicts the existence of triaxial dark matter halos which contain notable amounts of substructure. However, analytical halo models with smooth, spherically symmetric density profiles are routinely adopted in the modelling of light propagation effects through such objects. In this paper, we report the biases introduced by this procedure by comparing the surface mass densities of actual N-body halos against the widely used analytical model suggested by Navarro, Frenk and White (1996) (NFW). We conduct our analysis in the redshift range of 0.0 − 1.5.

In cluster sized halos, we find that triaxiality can cause scatter in the surface mass density of the halos up to σ+ = +60% and σ− = −70%, where the 1-σ limits are relative to the analytical NFW model given value. Subhalos can increase this scatter to σ+ = +70% and σ− = −80%. In galaxy sized halos, the triaxial scatter can be as high as σ+ = +80% and σ− = −70%, and with subhalos the values can change to σ+ = +40% and σ− = −80%.

We have developed an analytical model for the surface mass density scatter as a function of distance to the halo centre, halo redshift and halo mass. The analytical description enables one to investigate the reliability of results obtained with simplified halo models. Additionally, it provides the means to add simulated surface density scatter to analytical density profiles. We have tested our model on the calculation of microlensing optical depths for MACHOs in CDM halos.

High-cadence optical observations of an H-α blue-wing bright point near solar AR NOAA 10794 are presented. The data were obtained with the Dunn Solar Telescope at the National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak using a newly developed camera system, the rapid dual imager. Wavelet analysis is undertaken to search for intensity-related oscillatory signatures, and periodicities ranging from 15 to 370 s are found with significance levels exceeding 95%. During two separate microflaring events, oscillation sites surrounding the bright point are observed to twist. We relate the twisting of the oscillation sites to the twisting of physical flux tubes, thus giving rise to reconnection phenomena. We derive an average twist velocity of 8.1 km/s and detect a peak in the emitted flux between twist angles of 180° and 230°.

One of long-standing debates in modern astrophysics is the formation mechanism of early-type galaxies. The classical model, proposed by Eggel et al. (1962), explains that early-type stellar populations form in an initial highly efficient burst and evolve without further star formation until present day. The high Mg and alpha abundances found in bright elliptical galaxies support such scenarios. Early-type galaxies, therefore, are traditionally believed that they are dynamically simple stellar systems with homogeneous stellar populations (e.g. Gott 1977). The popular Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) paradigm (e.g. Toomre and Toomre 1972), however, strongly suggested a hierarchical merger picture for massive elliptical galaxies. In this model, early-type galaxies form as a result of major mergers and are thought to have continued star formation. Evidence is growing that a substantial fraction of early-type galaxies has secondary star formation. Furthermore, SAURON survey has revealed a rich diversity in the kinematics, discovering numerous central disks and kinematically decoupled cores (e.g. Emsellem et al. 2004; Sarzi et al. 2006). Early-type galaxies are thus likely to have had complex and varied formation histories.

We review the properties of the gas surrounding high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) assessed through the analysis of damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) identified in their afterglow spectra. These GRB-DLAs are characterized by large H I column densities with a median of N(H I) = 1021.7 cm−2, no molecular gas signatures, metallicities ranging from 1/100 to nearly solar with a median exceeding 1/10 solar, and no anomalous abundance patterns. The detection of the atomic Mg lines and the time-variability of the fine-structure lines demonstrates that the majority of the neutral gas along the GRB sightlines is located between 50 pc and a few kpc from the GRB. This implies that this gas is presumably associated with the ambient interstellar medium of the host galaxy and that the derived properties from low-ionization lines do not directly constrain the local environment of the GRB progenitor. The highly ionized gas, traced by N V lines, which could result from a pre-existing H II region produced by the GRB progenitor and neighboring OB stars, appears on the other hand to be very local to the GRB at about 10 pc, yielding a snapshot of the medium's physical conditions at this radius.

The current content of the database was presented, emphasising the substantial progress accomplished since the IAU XXIV General Assembly in Manchester, 2000. More than 1 200 stellar systems have been added to the 8th Catalogue over the past six years, for a total of 540 papers compiled. A first paper was published to make the community aware of this facility (Pourbaix et al. 2004).

We explore a Boltzmann scheme for studying the evolution of compact binary populations in globular clusters. We include processes of compact binary formation by tidal capture and exchange encounters, binary destruction by exchange and dissociation mechanisms and binary hardening by encounters, gravitational radiation and magnetic braking, as also the orbital evolution during mass transfer, following Roche lobe contact. From the evolution of compact-binary population, we investigate the dependence of the model number of X-ray binaries NXB on two essential cluster properties, namely, the star-star and star-binary encounter-rate parameters Γ and γ (Verbunt parameters). We find that the values of NXB and their expected scaling with the Verbunt parameters are in good agreement with results from recent X-ray observations of Galactic globular clusters.

We performed N-body simulations of star clusters with primordial binaries using a new code, GORILLA. It is based on Makino and Aarseth (1992)'s integration scheme on GRAPE, and includes a special treatment for relatively isolated binaries. Using the new code, we investigated effects of hardness of primordial binaries on whole evolution of the clusters. We simulated seven N=16384 equal-mass clusters containing 10% (in mass) primordial binaries whose binding energies are 1, 3, 10, 30, 100, 300, and 1000kT, respectively. Additionally, we also simulated a cluster without primordial binaries and that in which all binaries are replaced by stars with double mass, as references of soft and hard limits, respectively. We found that, in both soft (≤ 3kT) and hard (≥ 1000kT) limits, clusters experiences deep core collapse and shows gravothermal oscillations. On the other hands, in the intermediate hardness (10-300kT), the core collapses halt halfway due an energy releases of the primordial binaries.

The Arecibo Methanol Maser Galactic Plane Survey (AMGPS) is a blind survey for 6.7 GHz methanol masers in a section of the Galactic plane visible from the Arecibo radio telescope. The survey for these signposts of massive star formation is complete at a flux density level of 0.27 Jy making it the most sensitive blind survey for methanol masers carried out to date, and resulted in the detection of 86 methanol masers, 48 of which are new discoveries. The properties of methanol masers discovered in the survey are consistent with their being associated with early phases of massive star formation. The data also show the tangent point of the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm to be around a Galactic longitude of 49.6°.

Waves in solar and stellar atmospheres have been proposed more than fifty years ago to heat the chromosphere and the corona. Their usefulness as a means to explain an important phenomenon gave wave science its initial impetus. However, since then, waves and oscillations have become a great astrophysical topic of their own. In an inhomogeneous medium, waves occur in immense variety. The theory of waves explores this complexity and highlights modes and properties that are important in stellar atmospheres. We have seen steady progress in this fundamental endeavour that has recently been accelerated through the use of numerical simulations. The discovery, three decades ago, of waves in the solar and stellar interiors and later in the corona, although at low energy levels, opened a new field: the diagnostic use of waves. Seismology of the interior has become a booming field of solar and stellar physics, and observed oscillations have been used to derive the magnetic field strength and to explore the corona.

Tides come from the fact that different parts of a system do not fall in exactly the same way in a non-uniform gravity field. In the case of a protoplanetary disk perturbed by an orbiting, prograde protoplanet, the protoplanet tides raise a wake in the disk which causes the orbital elements of the planet to change over time. The most spectacular result of this process is a change in the protoplanet's semi-major axis, which can decrease by orders of magnitude on timescales shorter than the disk lifetime. This drift in the semi-major axis is called planetary migration. In a first part, we describe how the planet and disk exchange angular momentum and energy at the Lindblad and corotation resonances. Next we review the various types of planetary migration that have so far been contemplated: type I migration, which corresponds to low-mass planets (less than a few Earth masses) triggering a linear disk response; type II migration, which corresponds to massive planets (typically at least one Jupiter mass) that open up a gap in the disk; “runaway” or type III migration, which corresponds to sub-giant planets that orbit in massive disks; and stochastic or diffusive migration, which is the migration mode of low- or intermediate-mass planets embedded in turbulent disks. Lastly, we present some recent results in the field of planetary migration.

We have embarked on a detailed study of the kinematical and morphological structure of HI disks of warped galaxies, which are parametrised by means of kinematic modelling of spectroscopic observations. We present current results and compare them to predictions of theories for warp formation and -maintenance.

Division X provides a common theme for astronomers using radio techniques to study a vast range of phenomena in the Universe, from exploring the Earth's ionosphere or making radar measurements in the Solar System, via mapping the distribution of gas and molecules in our own Galaxy and in other galaxies, to study the vast explosive processes in radio galaxies and QSOs and the faint afterglow of the Big Bang itself.

The connection between the long GRBs and Type Ic Supernovae (SNe) has revealed the interesting diversity: (i) GRB-SNe, (ii) Non-GRB Hypernovae (HNe), (iii) X-Ray Flash (XRF)-SNe, and (iv) Non-SN GRBs (or dark HNe). We show that nucleosynthetic properties found in the above diversity are connected to the variation of the abundance patterns of extremely-metal-poor (EMP) stars, such as the excess of C, Co, Zn relative to Fe. We explain such a connection in a unified manner as nucleosynthesis of hyper-aspherical (jet-induced) explosions of Pop III core-collapse SNe. We show that (1) the explosions with large energy deposition rate, Ėdep, are observed as GRB-HNe and their yields can explain the abundances of normal EMP stars, and (2) the explosions with small Ėdep are observed as GRBs without bright SNe and can be responsible for the formation of the C-rich EMP (CEMP) and the hyper metal-poor (HMP) stars. We thus propose that GRB-HNe and the Non-SN GRBs (dark HNe) belong to a continuous series of BH-forming massive stellar deaths with the relativistic jets of different Ėdep.

We present observational results on the red supergiant VY Canis Majoris with VERA. We have observed 22 GHz H2O masers and 43 GHz SiO masers (v=1 and 2 J=1-0) around VY CMa for 13 months. We succesfully detected a parallax of 0.87 ± 0.08 mas, corresponding to the distance of 1.15 +0.10−0.09 kpc using H2O masers. As the result of phase-referencing analyses, we have measured absolute positions for both H2O masers and SiO masers. The H2O maser features show rapid expansion off the central star.

We combine deep UBV RIzJK photometry from the MUSYC survey with redshifts from the COMBO-17 survey to study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) properties of 674 high-redshift (0.5 < z < 1) early-type galaxies, drawn from the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (E-CDFS). Galaxy morphologies are determined through visual inspection of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images taken from the GEMS survey. We harness the sensitivity of the UV to young (<1 Gyrs old) stars to quantify the recent star formation history of the early-type population. We find compelling evidence that early-types of all luminosities form stars over the lifetime of the Universe, although the bulk of their star formation is already complete at high redshift. Luminous (−23 < M(V) < −20.5) early-types form 10-15 percent of their mass after z = 1, while their less luminous (M(V) > −20.5) counterparts form 30-60 percent of their mass in the same redshift range.

With multi-wavelength observations from ground and space-based instruments it has been possible to detect waves in a number of different wavelengths simultaneously and to, consequently, study their propagation properties. High-resolution wave observations combined with forward MHD modelling can give an unprecedented insight into the connectivity of the magnetized solar atmosphere, which further gives us a realistic chance to construct the structure of the magnetic field in the stellar atmosphere. This type of exploration is also termed as magnetic seismology. In this review I will focus on global waves, like EIT waves. I will also address the possibility of finding out the properties of magnetic structures while studying the interaction of global waves with coronal loops. A Promising new way to probe stellar atmosphere is to use our knowledge of coronal seismology on the Sun and to apply it to more distant stars. It will also enable us to measure properties such as the lengths of loops linked with stellar flares and the strengths of coronal magnetic fields on stars. In the last part I will review the current status of the stellar coronal seismology.

The evolution of a star cluster is strongly influenced by the presence of primordial binaries and of a central black hole, as dynamical interactions within the core prevents a deep core collapse under these conditions. We present the results from a large set of direct N-body simulations of star clusters that include an intermediate mass black hole, single and binary stars. We highlight the structural and dynamical differences for the various cases showing in particular that on a timescale of a few relaxation times the density profile of the star cluster does no longer depend on the details of the initial conditions but only on the efficiency of the energy generation due to gravitational encounters at the center of the system.

The formation of the first generations of stars at redshifts z ≥ 15 − 20 signaled the transition from the simple initial state of the universe to one of ever increasing complexity. We here review recent progress in understanding the assembly process of the first galaxies, starting with cosmological initial conditions and modelling the detailed physics of star formation. In particular, we study the role of HD cooling in ionized primordial gas, the impact of UV radiation produced by the first stars, and the propagation of the supernova blast waves triggered at the end of their brief lives. We conclude by discussing how the chemical abundance patterns observed in extremely low-metallicity stars allow us to probe the properties of the first stars.

HI observations of the Virgo Cluster pair NGC 4532/DDO 137, conducted as part of the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey, reveal an HI feature extending ~500kpc to the southwest. The structure has a total mass of up to 7 x 108M⊙, equivalent to 10% of the pair HI mass. Optical R imaging reveals no counterparts to a level of 26.5 mag arcsec−2. The structure is likely the result of galaxy harassment.
