Some circumstantial evidence for residual planetesimals is constructed based on the recent discovery of a dusty ring around a young white dwarf at the center of the Helix nebula (Su et al. 2007). This ring extends between about 35 and 150 AU from the nebula center, and have a total mass of about 0.13 M⊕. In this paper we propose that this ring is the by-product of planets and planetesimals' orbital evolution during the epoch when the central star rapidly lost most of its mass. We examine the dynamical evolution of planetary systems similar to the solar system (i.e. with gas giant planets and residual planetesimals) as their host stars evolve off the main sequence. During the process, some planetesimals will be captured by the gas giants into mean motion resonances and their mutual collisions will form a dust ring similar to that observed at the center of the Helix nebula.

The total mass of a distant star cluster is often derived from the virial theorem, using line-of-sight velocity dispersion measurements and half-light radii, under the implicit assumption that all stars are single (although it is known that most stars form part of binary systems). The components of binary stars exhibit orbital motion, which increases the measured velocity dispersion, resulting in a dynamical mass overestimation. In these proceedings we quantify the effect of neglecting the binary population on the derivation of the dynamical mass of a star cluster. We find that the presence of binaries plays an important role for clusters with total mass Mcl ≤ 105 M⊙; the dynamical mass can be significantly overestimated (by a factor of two or more). For the more massive clusters, with Mcl ≥ 105 M⊙, binaries do not affect the dynamical mass estimation significantly, provided that the cluster is significantly compact (half-mass radius ≤qslant 5 pc).

The ALFALFA2 blind HI survey will enable a census of the distribution of gas-rich galaxies in the local Universe. Sensitive to an HI mass of 107 solar masses at the distance of the Virgo cluster, ALFALFA will probe the smallest objects locally and provide a new consideration of near-field cosmology. Additionally, with a larger, cosmologically significant sample volume and wider bandwidth than previous blind surveys, a much larger number of detections in each mass bin is possible, with adequate angular resolution to eliminate the need for extensive follow-up observations. This increased sensitivity will greatly enhance the utility of cosmological probes in HI. ALFALFA will eventually measure the correlation function of HI selected galaxies in a large local volume. The larger sample and volume size of the ALFALFA dataset will also robustly measure the HI mass function (HIMF). Here, we present the preliminary results on the distribution of local gas-rich galaxies from a first ALFALFA catalog covering 540 deg2.

In the present-day universe, the global properties of bulges and early-type galaxies correlate with the mass of their central black holes, indicating a connection between galaxy evolution and nuclear activity. Understanding the origin of this relation is a major challenge for cosmological models. Using Keck spectra and HST images, we present direct measurements of the correlations between black hole mass and host spheroid luminosity and velocity dispersion at z=0.36, showing that the relations evolved significantly in the past 4 billion years. It appears that black holes of a few 108 M⊙ completed their growth before their host galaxies, and that the current scaling relations are only the final point of the co-evolution of galaxies and black holes.

We present preliminary work on the formation scenario of blue straggler stars by mass transfer in binary systems. More precisely, using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), we want to model only the outer parts of the stars in order to get a much greater spatial resolution of the mass transfer flow itself. The inner boundary conditions are achieved using the so-called ghost particles and by replacing the inner mass by a central point mass. Stability of this central point mass is crucial, and it is shown that we get reasonable results. These simulations should give us indications on which layers of the donor star are actually transferred to the other star as well as how mass is transferred and how it settles on the accretor. This work is aimed at getting distinct observational signatures which would help identifying the dominant formation mechanism of blue straggler stars.

Courteau et al. (2007a) reported on the dependence of the ratio of a galaxy's maximum circular velocity, Vc, to its central velocity dispersion, σ0, on morphology, or equivalently total light concentration. This Vc − σ0–concentration relation, which involves details about the local and global galaxy physics, poses a fundamental challenge for galaxy structure models. Furthermore, not only must these models reproduce the Vc − σ0 relation and its various dependences, they must simultaneously match other fundamental scaling relations such as the velocity-size-luminosity and color-luminosity relations. We focus here on the interpretation of parameters that enter the Vc − σ0 relation to enable proper data-model comparisons and follow-up studies by galaxy modelers and observers.

Various differences in galaxy cluster properties derived from X-ray and weak lensing observations have been highlighted in the literature. One such difference is the observation of mass concentrations in lensing maps which have no X-ray counterparts (e.g. Jee, White, Ford et al. 2005). We investigate this issue by identifying substructures in maps of projected total mass (analogous to weak lensing mass reconstructions) and maps of projected X-ray surface brightness for three simulated clusters. We then compare the 2D mass substructures with both 3D subhalo data and the 2D X-ray substructures. Here we present preliminary results from the first comparison, where we have assessed the impact of projecting the data on subhalo identification.

The business meeting began with a brief review of the current rules and procedures of the WG, which are documented on the WG web page. Four regional FITS committees have been established by the WG, covering North American, Europe, Japan, and Australian/New Zealand, to provide advice to the WG on pending proposals. While it is recognized that this committee structure might need to be revised to provide representation to other regions, the current system is working well, and there were no motions to make any changes at this time.

We present the results of a mm wavelength methanol maser survey towards massive star forming regions. We have carried out Class II methanol maser observations at 86.6 GHz, 86.9 GHz and 107.0 GHz, simultaneously, using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. We selected 108 6.7 GHz methanol maser sources with declinations above −25 degrees and fluxes above 20 Jy. The detection limit of maser observations was ~3 Jy. Of the 93 sources surveyed so far, we detected methanol emission in 25 sources (27%) and “maser” emission in nine sources (10%), of which thre “maser” sources are new detections. The detection rate for maser emission is about half that of a survey of the southern sky (Caswell et al. 2000). There is a correlation between the maser flux of 107 GHz and 6.7 GHz/12 GHz emission, but no correlation with the “thermal” (non maser) emission. From results of other molecular line observations, we found that the sources with methanol emission show higher gas temperatures and twice the detection rate of SiO emission. This may suggest that dust evaporation and destruction by shock are responsible for the high abundance of methanol molecules, one of the required physical conditions for maser emission.

I summarize the highlights of the conference. First I provide a brief history of the beach symposia series our massive star community has been organizing. Then I use most of my allocated space discussing what I believe are the main answered and open questions in the field. Finally I conclude with a perspective of the future of massive star research.

Parallax measurements of the Galactic Mira variables with VERA have started since 2004 to establish their Period-Luminosity (PL) relationship in the Galaxy. Multi-epoch VLBI observations of a semiregular variable S Crt yielded an accurate parallax of 2.27±0.14 mas corresponding to the distance of 441+29−24 pc. In addition to the distance, we obtained physical properties of S Crt. Temperature of the photosphere was found to be ~3000 K by fitting the infrared spectrum with a blackbody radiation. The stellar radius was obtained based on the distance, apparent magnitude, and the temperature. Internal proper motions of circularly-arranged maser spots in S Crt were detected for the first time. Observations of the other Mira variables, such as R UMa, SY Scl, AP Lyn, and WX Psc are in progress.

We present the first results of the treatment of grain growth in our 3D, two-fluid (gas+dust) SPH code describing protoplanetary disks. We implement a scheme able to reproduce the variation of grain sizes caused by a variety of physical processes and test it with the analytical expression of grain growth given by Stepinski & Valageas (1997) in simulations of a typical T Tauri disk around a one solar mass star. The results are in agreement with a turbulent growing process and validate the method. We are now able to simulate the grain growth process in a protoplanetary disk given by a more realistic physical description, currently under development. We discuss the implications of the combined effect of grain growth and dust vertical settling and radial migration on subsequent planetesimal formation.

We computed the chemical evolution of Seyfert galaxies, residing in spiral bulges, based on an updated model for the Milky Way bulge with updated calculations of the Galactic potential and of the feedback from the central supermassive black hole (BH) in a spherical approximation. We followed the evolution of bulges of masses 2 × 109 − 1011M⊙ by scaling the star-formation efficiency and the bulge scalelenght as in the inverse-wind scenario for ellipticals. We successfully reproduced the observed relation between the BH mass and that of the host bulge, and the observed peak nuclear bolometric luminosity. The observed metal overabundances are easily achieved, as well as the constancy of chemical abundances with the redshift.

During the GA the Task Force for the Preservation and Digitization of Photographic Plates (PDPP) held an open two-session meeting, during which a formal merger between the WG-AC/CdC (Commission 8) and the TF-PDPP was confirmed. A dominant fraction of the members already belonged to both groups, and the nature of the merger is such that the activities of the WG-AC/CdC are now performed by the TF-PDPP.

This paper reviews recent advances in the study or circumstellar masers and masers found toward supernova remnants. The review is organized by science focus area, including the astrophysics of extended stellar atmospheres, stellar mass-loss processes and outflows, late-type evolved stellar evolution, stellar maser excitation and chemistry, and the use of stellar masers as independent distance estimators. Masers toward supernova remnants are covered separately. Recent advances and open future questions in this field are explored.

Dark galaxies may in principle be detectable through strong-lensing image splitting of quasars on small angular scales (milliarcseconds or below). Here, we estimate the overall probabilities for such detections under the assumption that the quasars can be treated as point sources. Due to the very low probabilities derived, we conclude that it is currently not feasable to use this strategy to put the CDM predictions for the dark galaxy population to the test.

As part of an astrometric program (see Loinard et al. in this volume), we have obtained an unprecedented sample of high-resolution (~ 1 mas) VLBA images of several nearby young stellar systems. As was to be expected, these images revealed interesting new characteristics of these objects. Perhaps the most interesting of these characteristics is the detection of a high rate of very tight binary stars (separations of a few mas) in our sample: of the 9 objects observed to date, 5 are binaries of this type.

We discuss the dynamical evolution of minor planetary bodies in the outer regions of planetary systems around the progenitors of DZ white dwarfs. We show that during the planetary-nebula phase of these stars, mass loss can lead to the expansion of all planetary bodies. The orbital eccentricity of the minor bodies, as relics of planetesimals, may be largely excited by the perturbation due to both gas drag effects and nearby gas giant planets. Some of these bodies migrate toward the host star, while others are scattered out of the planetary system. The former have modest probability of being captured by the sweeping secular resonances of giant planets, and induced to migrate toward the host star. When they venture close to their host stars, their orbits are tidally circularized so that they form compact disks where they may undergo further collisionally driven evolution. During the subsequent post main sequence evolution of their host stars, this process may provide an avenue which continually channels heavy elements onto the surface of the white dwarfs. We suggest that this scenario provides an explanation for the recently discovered Calcium line variation in G29-38.
