Further results from the theory of finite soluble groups are extended to the class of locally finite groups with a satisfactory Sylow structure. Let be a saturated U-formation and A a -group of automorphisms of the -group G. A is said to act -centrally on G if G has an A-composition series (Λσ/Vσ; σ ∈ ∑) such that A induces an f(p)-group of automorphisms in each p-factor Λσ/Vσ. We show that in this situation A is an -group, thus generalising the result of Schmid [8]. Associated results of Schmid and of Baer are also extended to the infinite case.

The present paper is devoted to the study of the weak respectively strong convergence of solutions of variational inequalities, with non-linear partial differential operators of the generalised divergence form and of monotone type, under a perturbation of the domain of the definition. In this study there are used convergence concepts defined according to [ 22] and abstract convergence theorems given in [15 and 16].

This paper studies the boundary-value problem arising from the behaviour of a fluid occupying the region 0 ≦ x ≧ 1 between two rotating discs, rotating about a common axis perpendicular to their planes, when the discs, are rotating in the same sense with speeds 0 ≦ Ω0<Ω1. We consider a class of convex non-linear boundary value problems of the form

where L is a linear, uniformly elliptic, self-adjoint differential expression, f is a given non-linear function, B is a boundary differential expression of either Dirichlet or Neumann type and D is a bounded open domain with boundary ∂D. Particular problems of this class arise in the process of thermal combustion [8].

In this paper we show that stable solutions of this class can be bounded from below (above) by a monotonically increasing (decreasing) sequence of Newton (Picard) iterates. The possibility of using these schemes to construct unstable solutions is also considered.

Several criteria are given for some or all polynomials in an expression M(y) = –(py′)′+qy which is non-oscillatory on (0, ∞) to be limit-point. One of these states that if M is non-oscillatory and , then every polynomial in M is limit-point.

The theory of generalised functions is used to develop a uniqueness theory for dual integral equations of Titchmarsh type.

The Weyl limit-point, limit-circle nature of the equation y″(x)–q(x)y(x) = 0(0≦ x< ∞) is analysed When q(x) has the form q(x) = xαp(xβ), where α and β are positive constants and p(t) is a continuous periodic function of t.

Dual extremum principles characterising the solutions of problems for a positive-definite self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space which involve unilateral constraints are formulated using a Hilbert space decomposition theorem due to Moreau. Various upper and lower bounds to these solutions are then obtained, these bounds involving the solutions to subsidiary problems with less restrictive conditions than the solution to the original problem.

Schaefer's fixed-point theorem is used to obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of a periodic solution of the non-linear differential equation f(D)x+BMg(D)x = p. The most significant feature of these conditions is a geometrical restriction on the range of the matrix M which is the same as the elliptic ball criterion encountered in stability theory. The extension of the results to delay-differential equations with constant time lags is also discussed.

Eisenstein series are entire modular forms Ek of even integral weight k≧ 4 with Fourier expansions given by (1.1). There are numerous identities, such as E8 = , relating these series. These are usually proved by arguments making use of the dimensions of vector spaces of modular forms, and not directly. The paper shows how such identities can be proved by elementary methods by studying chains of solutions of Diophantine equations of the form xξ+yη = n.

We study the existence of solutions of the Dirichlet problem for weakly nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations. We only consider cases where the nonlinearities do not depend on any partial derivatives. For these cases, we prove the existence of solutions for a wide variety of nonlinearities.

We investigate the spectral theory for a class of pseudodifferential operators which includes all constant coefficient differential operators, and also operators such as The operators considered are of the form Su(x) = Au(x)+q(x)u(x), where A is an operator which corresponds in the Fourier transform plane to a multiplication operator, and q(x) is a potential term. We prove an eigenfunction expansion theorem for S and derive some results concerning the spectrum of S.

Given differential expressions τ1; τ2, …, τn— not necessarily symmetric—which are regular on [0,∞), we investigate the relationship between the number of linearly independent L2(0,∞) solutions of the equations τjy = 0 and of the product equation (τ1τ2 … τn)y = 0. Our results extend those recently obtained in [15, 16, 17] for the special case τJ = τ for j = 1, …, n and τ is symmetric. In particular they include the classification results of Everitt and Giertz [4,5,6] for this special case when τ is a real second-order symmetric expression.

An improperly posed problem is studied for a linear partial integro-differential equation of convolution type on the semi-axis. The problem originates from a generalised process of heat conduction in materials with fading memory, where the temperature of the material has to be determined for prescribed homogeneous boundary conditions and for a given final temperature distribution. By using eigenfunctions of the n-dimensional Laplacian, the problem is reduced to a family of equivalent initial-value problems for ordinary integro-differential equations; the latter are treated by the method of factorisation in a suitable function algebra. Sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the original problem are obtained in terms of the solvability conditions of the reduced problems. The whole analysis is performed simultaneously in a broad variety of spaces consisting of functions with an exponential growth rate (in the time variable) at infinity. One of the main advantages in the present approach is that solutions, if they exist, can always be computed explicitly.

Perturbation terms are permitted which either satisfy certain pointwise bounds or integral type bounds. Not all of the coefficients of the equation are required to be non-negative.

This paper, extending the work of Stratford [6] considers a boundary layer with uniform pressure when x < x0, and with the pressure in x > x0 so chosen that the layer is just on the point of separation for all x >x0. The required pressure distribution is shown to be

The displacement and momentum thicknesses are also derived as series in powers of ξ (and log ξ), and the shape parameter H then obtained as a similar series. The continuous change in H from the Blasius value (when ξ = 0) towards the Falkner-Skan [3] separation value is convincingly demonstrated, with the aid of the leading terms of an asymptomatic expansion for large ξ.

We consider the generalisation from central series to marginal series in groups and set up firstly various basic results. The main section of the paper is concerned with the study of which group theoretical properties may be transferred from a marginal factor in a group to the corresponding verbal subgroup and which properties may be transferred from one factor of a lower marginal series to successive factors of the series.

The existence of periodic solutions of non-linear Schrödinger equations with periodic potential is investigated. The main result obtained is an intermediate value type theorem for such non-linear differential operators.

In this paper, we determine the semigroup End D of endomorphisms of the infinite dihedral group D, and give a multiplication table for it. We determine the additive structure of the near-rings E(D) generated by the endomorphisms of D, A(D) generated by the automorphisms of D and I(D) generated by the inner automorphisms of D, and determine their radicals and all their maximal right ideals.
