An interlaboratory comparison experiment for 14C measurements has been organized jointly by the Harwell and British Museum laboratories to include the working radiocarbon laboratories of the United Kingdom. The experiment has been run along the lines of that organized by the IAEA for tritium and has explored the problems of sample preparation, verification of equivalent levels, and presentation of results. Samples of benzene representing 5 age equivalent levels between twice modern and 20,000 years old have been prepared and distributed for measurement either by direct counting (liquid scintillation) or full process tests. Preliminary results received show excellent agreement both between laboratories and in comparison with the known relative activities of the prepared solutions. The possibility of extending the experiment to cover different sample types and a wider distribution of testing laboratories is briefly discussed.

The following list includes samples from sites or sections described in archaeologic or geologic publications. Several others, already dated, will be published when the archaeologic and geologic investigations are concluded.

Dendrochronological research in North-Central Europe and the East Mediterranean has produced networks of long regional oak (Quercus sp.) reference chronologies that have been instrumental in dating, provenancing, and paleoclimate research applications. However, until now these two important tree-ring networks have not been successfully linked. Oak forests and historical/archaeological sites in southeastern Europe provide the key for linking the North-Central European and East Mediterranean tree-ring networks, but previous dendrochronological research in this region has been largely absent. This article presents the initial results of a project, in which we have built oak tree-ring chronologies from forest sites and historical/archaeological sites along a north-south transect between Poland and northwestern Turkey, with the aim of linking the North-Central European and East Mediterranean tree-ring networks and creating a new pan-European oak data set for dendrochronological dating and paleoclimatic reconstruction. Correlation among tree-ring chronologies and the spatial distribution of their teleconnections are evaluated. The southeastern European chronologies provide a solid bridge between both major European dendrochronological networks. The results indicate that a dense network of chronologies is the key for bridging spatial and temporal gaps in tree-ring records. Dendrochronological sampling should be intensively continued in southeastern Europe because resources for building long oak chronologies in the region are rapidly disappearing.

The Tellervo dendrochronological software builds upon the Tree-Ring Data Standard (TRiDaS) to provide a tool for recording and managing all manner of dendrochronological data. However, Tellervo is especially useful for dendroarchaeological research. The traditional file formats used in dendrochronology—and by association the applications that use them—have very limited and nonstandard methods for recording rich information about dendro samples and their context. Such information is especially important in dendroarchaeological research to ensure accurate conclusions are made. Tellervo is described here in the context of research carried out as part of the excavations of the Theodosian Harbor at Yenikapı, Istanbul.

Despite many recent attempts to settle the dispute concerning the absolute date of the Minoan Santorini eruption, there are still differences between some archaeologists and scientists on the absolute dates and the reliability of radiocarbon dating. The recent publication of over 200 new 14C dates for dynastic Egypt rules out a major flaw in the historical chronology of Egypt and proves the reliability of 14C dating in the Nile Valley. Therefore, the student of Aegean archaeology and eastern Mediterranean interconnections is still confronted with an archaeologically based conventional, or “low,” chronology and a 14C-backed “high” chronology. New 14C determinations from different sites of the Aegean support the high chronology for the Late Minoan (LM) IA, while recent re-evaluation of LM IB determinations are slightly higher but more or less in agreement with archaeological estimations. The present contribution reviews archaeological and scientific data for the LM IA period and argues that a reduced (∼30 to 50 yr) offset between archaeological and 14C dates for the Minoan Santorini eruption may be possible, thus offering new perspectives for potential solutions for this problem.

Radiocarbon (14C) wiggle-match dating is a technique with a substantial potential to improve the precision of dating timbers in situations where dendrochronology is not tenable. However, one of the key reasons why obtaining a dendrochronological determination might be difficult is the short-lived nature of timbers on a range of archaeological sites, something that also affects the efficiency of the wiggle-match dating technique. Combined with the potential for high expense that the technique presents, it is paramount that wiggle-match dating research design has a good empirical basis. To this end we dated 50 consecutive, individual rings from a timber that grew during the Hallstatt radiocarbon calibration plateau (ca. 750–400 cal BC) in southwest Scotland. The results indicate that (1) the precision and accuracy of wiggle-match dates carried out on short-lived sequences during the Hallstatt plateau may suffer due to insufficient resolution of the calibration data, (2) sampling time-frames roughly equivalent to the underpinning calibration data are recommended (for the period in question this means decadal blocks), and (3) short-lived sequences are at risk of losing accuracy if the actual past trend of radiocarbon diverges from the mean of the radiocarbon calibration curve.

Most of the 14C measurements reported here were made between October 1980 and October 1981. Equipment, measurement, and treatment of samples are as reported previously (R, 1968, v 10, p 36–37; 1976, v 18, p 290; 1980, v 22, p 1045).

Dates in this list have been determined at U. S. Geological Survey radiocarbon laboratory, Washington, since our 1960 date list (USGS V). Procedures for the preparation of acetylene gas used in the counting, and the method of counting, (two days in two separate counters) remain unchanged. However, the modern standard used is no longer wood grown in the 19th century, but 95% of the activity of NBS oxalic-acid radiocarbon standard, as recommended at the 1959 Groningen Radiocarbon Conference. Measurement of the oxalic-acid standard at our laboratory indicates 6.2 ± 1% more C14 activity than our modern wood standard; so use of the new standard should make no appreciable difference when comparing samples computed by the old method. W. F. Libby's (1955) half-life average for C14, 5568 ± 30 years, was used for the decay equation.

We discuss the significance of 32 radiocarbon dates from the archaeological sites of Tel Beth Shean and Tel Rehov in northern Israel. All dates are from Iron Age I and II archaeological contexts (12th–8th centuries BCE). Most of the dates were done on short-lived samples (seeds and olive pits), while some are on charred timber. The samples are organized in several homogeneous clusters according to their context. This series is one of the largest groups of 14C dates from the Iron Age in the Levant. The paper discusses the correlation between the 14C dates and the traditional archaeological dates of the same context. Results from two laboratories and two calibration curves are compared, showing some significant differences in one case. We conclude with an evaluation of the relevance of 14C dating for the current debate about the chronology of the Iron Age in Israel, and in historical periods in general.

Unleached aliquots of TIRI/FIRI turbidite were analyzed by accelerator mass spectronomy (AMS) over a timespan of 18 months. Individual analyses ranged from 18,090–18,245 yr BP with reported errors between 30–50 yr. The weighted average fraction modern (FM) of these 28 measurements is 0.10378 ± 0.00008 (which equates to 18,199 ± 8 yr BP) and the measurements show a 1 standard deviation scatter of 0.00044 (±35 yr). The fractional error of these results indicates reproducibility of individual measurements at the 4 (1σ) level, which is consistent with the quoted counting-statistics-based errors. Laboratories engaged in the determination of 14C results at reasonably high precision should consider taking advantage of the TIRI and FIRI sample materials in the role of process standards. Additional suites of high-precision data are necessary to refine the accuracy of these sample materials.

The Late Bronze Age to Iron Age transition in the coastal southern Levant involves a major cultural change, which is characterized, among other things, by the appearance of Philistine pottery locally produced in styles derived from outside the Levant. This transition in the coastal southern Levant is conventionally dated to the 12th century BC, based on historical and archaeological artifacts associated with the Philistine pottery. Radiocarbon dating can provide a more precise independent absolute chronology for this transition, but dating for the period under discussion is complicated by the wiggles and relatively flat slope in the calibration curve, which significantly reduce precision. An additional complication is that the stratigraphic record below and above the transition at this site, as well as at most other sites in the region, is far from complete. We thus used a variety of microarchaeological techniques to improve our understanding of the stratigraphy, and to ensure that the locations with datable short-lived materials were only derived from primary contexts, which could be related directly to the associated material culture. The 14C dates were modeled using Bayesian statistics that incorporate the stratigraphic information. Using this integrative approach, we date the appearance of the Philistine pottery in Tell es-Safi/Gath in the 13th century BC.

The loessic deposits along with their palaeosols of the Kashmir Valley have been 14C dated using both organic and carbonate fractions. The 14C dates on both the fractions show good concordance. The 14C dates indicate that the last deglaciation in Kashmir (34° N) already started CA 18,000 ± 1000 BP at CA 1600m and CA 15,000 BP at CA 3000m altitude and thus support the recent global evidence of deglaciation having started several millennia before the Holocene.

Radiocarbon dating was first applied to historic lime mortars during the 1960s. However, despite the relative simplicity of the technique in principle, a number of subsequent studies have highlighted important aspects that should be considered. One of the most significant of these challenges arises from sample contamination by carbonaceous substances such as incompletely burnt limestone and aggregates of fossil origin containing “dead” 14C. More recent studies have shown that in the majority of old lime-based mixtures the contamination problem can be avoided through selection of pure lime lumps. These particular types of lumps are believed to originate from areas where the lime is incompletely mixed with the aggregate. It has been demonstrated that even a single lime lump can provide sufficient material for a 14C date of the mortar from which the lump was taken (Pesce et al. 2009). This paper describes the practical challenges associated with location, extraction, and preparation of 4 lime lumps extracted from 2 new sites for 14C dating. These include distinguishing the lime lumps from other lumps present in the matrix and the removal of material surrounding the lime lump. The coherence of 14C dating with other archaeological information on the chronology of historic sites is highlighted through case studies.

Although initial studies in the 1960's established the feasibility of applying the radiocarbon technique directly to ceramics, subsequent analyses have revealed this category of materials to be more complex than previously believed. Consideration of the points at which various types of organic carbon are introduced into ceramic materials by natural or human agencies allows more effective screening of potential sherd samples. It also suggest ways to overcome some of the limiting factors involved in dating ceramics.

The following list covers the samples measured at the Uppsala radiocarbon laboratory during 1959.

The “bomb” radiocarbon spike induced by atmospheric nuclear detonations has been reconstructed at a latitude of 40°N by measuring the 14C content in annual rings of a living pine (Pinus pinea) at the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry facility of the University of Lecce. We report how the samples were taken, selected, prepared for analysis, and measured. The results are in good agreement with other data sets available for the Northern Hemisphere temperate regions, showing that a curve for the calibration of 14C dates, valid for the whole Northern Hemisphere, can be established for the second half of the 20th century.

Radiocarbon is produced in all types of nuclear reactors. Most of the 14C released into the environment is in the form of gaseous emissions. Recent data on the 14C concentration found in terrestrial samples taken in the vicinity of nuclear power plants in Romania and Lithuania are presented. We found increased 14C levels in the surroundings of both power plants. At the Romanian power plant Cernavoda, we found excess levels of 14C in grass within a distance of about 1000 m, the highest 14C specific activity being 311 Bq/kg C (approximately 28% above the contemporary 14C background) found at a distance of 200 m from the point of release (nearest sampling location). At the Lithuanian power plant Ignalina, samples of willow, pine, and spruce showed a 14C excess of similar magnitude, while significantly higher values were found in moss samples. The samples were analyzed at the accelerator mass spectrometry facility in Lund, Sweden.

The eastern Adriatic is a key area for understanding the mechanisms and effects of the spread of agriculture. This article presents an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon chronology for the introduction and subsequent development of farming villages on the eastern shore of the Adriatic (∼6000–1700 cal BC) and evaluates this in comparison with the established pottery chronology based on stylistic data from Pokrovnik (Drniš) on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Models for the spread of agriculture rely heavily on changing pottery styles to define cultural groups and trace geographic relationships. Based on AMS 14C dates presented here, Impressed Wares first appear in central Dalmatia by 6000 cal BC and persist until 5300 cal BC, well into what is generally termed the Middle Neolithic. Similarly, a typical Middle Neolithic ware, figulina, appeared earlier than anticipated. These findings stand in contrast to cave and rockshelter assemblages in the eastern Adriatic, but mirror assemblages from farming villages on the Italian Adriatic coast. This study argues that the similarities in ceramic assemblage composition and change through time may have less to do with direct contacts between areas, but more with the nature of ceramic production and consumption at village sites in general. These data shed light on the limitations of regional ceramic chronologies in the eastern Adriatic and highlight the necessity for systematic expansion of 14C chronologies to address the social, economic, and ecological relevance of early farming in the Adriatic for the spread of agriculture in Europe and the Mediterranean.

This date list includes those series of samples completed in this laboratory as of November, 1965. The B.P. ages are based upon A.D. 1950, and are calculated with a half-life value of 5568 yr. Errors quoted are those derived from measurements of sample, background, and modern-age calibration, and do not include any half-life error. All samples were pretreated with 3N HCl, and some, where noted, received additional pretreatment with 2% NaOH for the removal of possible humic contaminants.

Contaminant carbon (blank carbon) was studied for its impact on the carbon isotope measurements (Δ14C and δ13C) of 3 organic compound classes of oceanic particulate organic matter. Two methods of blank correction and associated uncertainties were studied. First, the carbon blanks were quantified manometrically and the isotope ratios of the blank carbon were measured directly. Second, the isotope ratios of the blank carbon were estimated using the standard dilution method from the difference in Δ14C values between unprocessed and processed standards. The 2 methods agreed within the uncertainties. The standard deviations of numerous Δ14C measurements made on processed standard compounds were comparable to those of real samples. Blank correction using the standard dilution method is much less sensitive to the error in determination of blank carbon mass than is correction using the directly measured mass and Δ14C values of the blank carbon. The standard dilution method is recommended for correcting Δ14C analyses of small samples that involve incorporation of a significant amount of blank carbon.
